Title: calling all dadas....calling all dadas
Post by: Sludgelord on December 19, 2008, 01:41:53 am
helo. i made an electro/rap/lots of stuff mixtape for my good pal dada since he asked me to. i think this is a really, really good mixtape so i thought i'd share it with you guys. here's the download link. it is called chef boyardee's buttworld orchestra megabutts megamix vol. i.

http://www.gazup.com/rqdcV-chef-boyardees-buttworld-orchestra-megabutts-megamix-vol.-i.rar-download-mirrors

here's the track listing:

1. DJ Kool Herc - B-Boys Jam
2. Cybotron - Enter
3. Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xDj54ZdJw_w)
4. Hashim - Al-Naafiysh
5. Arpanet - Illuminated Displays (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jyE6oi9uzFM&fmt=18)
6. Davy DMX - One For the Treble
7. Fresh 3 MCs - Fresh
8. Kraftwerk - Metal on Metal (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XVRubD_zcj4)
9. Two Sisters - B-Boys Beware
10. Cybotron - Industrial Lies
11. Freestyle/Pretty Tony - It's Automatic
12. Unknown DJ & 3D - Beatronic
13. Model 500 - Future
14. Funky Four Plus One More - Rappin' and Rockin' the House (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy6vuT8E1DQ&feature=related)
15. Newcleus - Destination Earth
16. Japanese Telecom - Japanese Animation

there's a lot of chefboyardeeafroelectros on here, but there is a lot of this neat music that is somewhere between electro, techno, and rap in it too. some of them (like rappin' and rockin' the house) are very clearly rap, but others, like al-naafiysh, future, illuminated displays, and others fall in this sort of ambiguous in-between space that is neat to listen to. you can click the linked titles above for some examples of what you're getting yourself into!!! i also tried to keep most of the artists "mainstream" (there's no real ELECTRO MAINSTREAM except maybe uh, africa bambaataa, kraftwerk, and cybotron but w/e) so they'd be easier to find if you like it by them.

so here dada and anyone else interested.

i spent like an hour and a half making it. i went through all my afroelectros and picked out the ones i thought were the best/easiest for beginners (newbies to the afroelectro genre (noobs)). i am really pleased with this mixtape. also i keep saying afroelectros but that's not the only thing this mixtape is! it's a whole lot of stuff, but it's sort of centered around afroelectros!!

afro electros is here to stay. also look at that (http://www.last.fm/user/ChefBoyardee). there aren't even any afroelectros in my top 50. probably not even my TOP 100 (i'm not going to check), but i think it's that most of these artists only have like 2 songs and i don't feel like listening to them 100 times.

panda i listen to loads of the same bands you do! they're not my all time favorites or anything but i love a whole lot of them and they're definitely up there!

i really don't listen to a whole lot of classic rock, though. the only "classic rock" i listen to a lot is hendrix. i occasionally listen to led zep, the beatles, the who, the rolling stones, and DYLAN if he counts. that's about it.

also BUBBA SPARXXX steel? is he even good? i've never listened to him but from all i've heard he is completely terrible!

Although this album was only moderately successful, selling around 350,000 copies, it is regarded by many critics such as The Source, Hip-Hop Connection and more mainstream magazines such as Q to be something of a landmark in hip-hop music. The album's main strength according to critics was that it embraced Sparxxx's grass roots, with production heavily influenced by country music and similar musical styles.

I know next to nothing of his recent works, I do know Deliverance is a critical darling though.

haha the wikipedia article even says HE...HE SOLD OUT AFTER DELIVERANCE.

Quote
The poor sales of this critically adored album were attributed to an unclear classification of Bubba; it is believed that the album was too hip-hop for a rock audience and too rock for a hip-hop audience. He soon departed from Beat Club and began an association with Purple Ribbon Records, as reported on AllHipHop.com. His latest album, The Charm (2006), is much more conventional and as a result has generated impressive sales in addition to two hit singles ("Ms. New Booty" and "Heat It Up").

good job wikipedia.

i find you p boring...

no actually i got in to a lot of noise/punk bands from reading kurt cobains journals lol. after reading them i started checking out like big black, pixies, vaselines, mudhoney, melvins, sonic youth, etc. from there i got into stuff like dinosaur jr and husker du and meat puppets and minutemen.

thx kurt cobain.. invading your privacy was very beneficial to me music wise. :)

Post by: headphonics on December 20, 2008, 07:49:08 am
he had very good taste in music.  also very diverse.  i wish i had picked up his journal earlier; i had already found out about a lot of cool 80s music/postpunk/rock shit by the time i read it but he put me onto some shit and i'd be that much further along if it hadn't took me years to......find myself......music-wise.  i don't really like the vaselines that much, or mudhoney, or meat puppets, but he was p into the melvins and i like them.  husker du/minutemen are good too.  he also liked marine girls iirc!!  cobain was a really cool guy.

Post by: headphonics on December 20, 2008, 08:01:21 am
ps i actually made a mixtape.  i dunno if most people are really into some of the artists on it or if you guys will enjoy it but it is fairly representative of my taste and that is what i was going for.  i think it is good.  some of it is probably p obscure but others like MODESTMOUSE//NAS aren't and it almost made me not want to put them on there but then just making it obscure stuff is kinda dumb and i don't like not being able to talk about really really good musicians just because people know they are good.  plus i really do not see much talk of interstate 8/illmatic but maybe this is because everyone knows they are cool albums.

http://rapidshare.com/files/175085284/mixtape.rar.html

also HMMM ten download limit i was not aware of this.  well w/e if more than ten people want it i will upload it somewhere less gay i guess??  i probably should've used gazup but who cares

yeah i just realized that fucks a lot of music blogs over.  like, they can use other services but all the old shit is worthless.  ughghhh this is probably gonna make it much harder to find shit for a while.  isn't rapidshare worthless now?

also sorry but the droogs track is of poor quality.  their shit is stupidly hard to find on the internet and the ONE ALBUM i was able to find was like 92kbps or something.  better than nothing i guess but yeah, they're not a very easy to find band!

Ramci make a folk mixtape. Please
A1. Even if i do have some folk, i'm mostly about folk-rock... well, SORT of folk-rock.  :fogetshrug: I don't have any classics like Dylan, Cohen, Pentangle, Fairport Convention, just some obscure ones.

A2. I'm pretty sure everybody here have heard Elliott Smith and Nick Drake sooooooooo

B. Not sure if i got enough material for this! I'm a very song-centered guy. I could name many good songs from one artist and then just one song from another one, so i have a huge temptation to add several songs from one artist. Maybe i can work this out somehow!

C. Seriously, sometimes the album version sucks compared to the live version / the live versions rule over the studio albums so uhh what am i gonna do? Like, i may have to rip songs from youtube, how do you guys feel about that?!?!?

Edit Nah, i'm pretty sure it's not going to work, especially since whole lot of my favourite songs are from youtube + inconsistent taste so w/e

yeah i know i have but i was disappointed when nothing came of it again so i thought maybe people listening to mixtape full of them would fuel discussion and i could finally....shoot the shit about ymg....

also because i wanted it to be more INDICATIVE OF PANDA'S TASTE and less AMASING SHIT YOUVE NEVER HEARD OF so i went with stuff i liked most instead of stuff i'd never mentioned and was almost positive no one on gw knew.  plus i mean how many people read those series of argument posts i made in your ALBUMS GW DOESNT KNOW topic and went and checked out the shit i told you to write about?

Here’s a dance-punk mixtape I made, since I always meant to make a topic about this stuff but never got around to it. I’m terrible at sequencing or whatever but I think most of it is pretty solid: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MWTFVZ3H

1. Ufo - ESG
2. French Boy - Garcons
3. Tumour - Lizzy Mercier Descloux
4. Black Box Disco - Vortex OST
5. For The Love Of Money - Defunkt
6. Cowboys & Gangsters - Gichi Dan

Yeah, I think a good few of the dance-punk guys ended up being sampled in hip-hop and electro records, like ESG especially were sampled by Wu-Tang Clan and like a dozen other bands. I read that one of the reasons Liquid Liquid broke up was because they lost a lawsuit over Grandmaster Flash sampling that song, although I'm not sure of the details. From what I've heard the two genres are kinda similar in a lot of ways but there isn't much good feeling between them!

Also just throwing this out there but the Cristina album Sleep It Off is really good. It's weird because it's like every terrible new-wave dance band rolled into one and then stepped on or something, so it sounds like a really warped and hateful parody of new-wave or something, or maybe like those shitty albums of childrens music except really disjointed and gross. Like they do a version of a Kurt Weill song off the Threepenny Opera, and on one level it's exactly as bad as you'd expect a synth-and-drum-machine 80's cover of an opera song would sound, but on another level it's so over the top that it's almost grotesque and actually comes off as better than the original. It's one of the most disgusted sounding albums I've ever heard, I think. This doesn't really have anything do do with anything, but I was just listening to it and it really is so strange sounding. Maybe it's just me, though.

Early C. Chips' Wave Compilation!!
Contains: Minimal Wave, Coldwave, French and German New Wave, a little: Darkwave, Postwave, Alternative Wave.

I ended up cutting a lot of good songs because they were too upbeat/poppy/complex for this compilation, and because I didn't want to have 4 or 5 Ruth songs on something that's supposed to be a mixtape. since I asked for some waves in the zoo and no one could help me I'm assuming no one has ever heard these songs:
http://www.gazup.com/sEl2B-wave_mixape.rar-download-mirrors

1. Ruth - Polaroid/Roman/Photo
2. Adolph Filter - 1982
3. Antifamily - Law of the Plainsmen
4. Antifamily - the Shaft
5. G.K. Agenda - Enyholes
6. Ruth - Misty Mouse
7. Transparent Allusion - We
8. The Droids - the Force
9. Section 25 - Looking from a Hilltop
10. Deine Lakaien - Love Will Not Die
11. Trisomie 21 - the Last Song
12. Bruce Springsteen - I'm on Fire

It's a combination of wave shit from the 80s to the present. Coldwave might be a new term; it refers to the french minimalist new wave and post-punk of the 80s. some of it I really like, others I don't particularly enjoy but I thought I should include them just to show the scope of all the minimal synth shit that has been forgotten over the years. and yes that is a Butch Springsteen song at the end!! I didn't say anything when yall were dissin him but I really like that song. it stands out from his other work, even stuff from the same album (eg Dancing in the Dark) so take a listen...you might be pleasantly surprised :fogetwink:

now I will listen to your mixtapes

hot tip from gw's last hiphop guy (thats me): black milk is fast becoming the new j dilla; a stylized approach to beat making with a growing indie presence who can't rap that well and has quite a few overrated albums, but is still good and will be the late 2000s beats guy pretty much.

i say this because it's all over this blog. HERE'S AN ANALOGY

DRE:KANYE::J DILLA:BLACK MILK. grab the caltroit album if you're interested in hearing some of his better work.

man I wrote a really long baked post and decided this would be better:

I'd say that Calexico is one of my favorite groups right now regardless of genre. Their blend of country with horn and accordion and various elements borrowed from the music of northern mexico (hey they are from tucson sup gb) is pretty sweet and they can be pretty psychedelic/funky as well so yeah.

dbt definitely owns though

I moved it, because who cares?  This isn't LINKING TO FALLOUT 3 or RMXP or some other download people are constantly looking for.  It's a bunch of mixtapes filled with obscure bands, most of which do not exist anymore.  Is FLIPPER going to come out of hiding and harass us about posting their music?  You guys should honestly be looking at the reasoning behind the rules and not the rules themselves.  There are different strata of piracy and if you can't see the huge difference between linking popular games and linking rapidshares of mixtapes with artists no one's ever heard of, I don't know what to tell you.  GW is not what you would call a center of piracy and I doubt it would attract any attention at all if we had the topic in public.

Also, Comics and Anime.  We've been allowed to post fansubs in it for years, but I've seen people link licensed cartoons and anime numerous times and no one ever said anything about it, because a) not really a big deal, and b) we're not some HUGE ANIME FORUM so we can do this without drawing tons of attention.  It's already a bit of a contradiction with the rules, and these mixtapes or more or less the same thing.  They're not Metallica; they're filled with bands no one cares about, and we're not a big ol' music forum anyway so I doubt people outside of GW will even notice like they would if GW was a HUGE MUSIC PIRACY FORUM.

idk, if we get a complaint or someone being like HEY TAKE OUR SHIT DOWN we can obviously move it back and know that this is not something we can do, but the bands that are being linked in this topic aren't the ones who are EQUIPPED TO FILE LAWSUITS or even close, so there's really no risk in testing the waters.  It's not like anyone's linking TOOL DISCOGRAPHY.

hey lemme continue an implication here; usually when I see someone I respect posting a band, I youtube them or something. if they gush over it or really establish its credentials like catamites used to do, I just grab an album. by this note I'm surprised by the people saying WHOA PANDA or WASHCYCLE I NEVER HEARD NONE OF THIS.

does no one else do this? it's not a respect issue clearly as you are downloading a whole mixtape which seems like more work than youtubing a single song, but this kind of throws me, when chef's all SORRY I DIDNT READ YOUR POST HISTORY. okay, but did you see the posts where these bands are clearly mentioned?

I should make another mixtape for punk rock bands with female vocalists!! but I still haven't listened to any of pidge's recommendations from a long time ago besides the one that's in L7 and I already knew them. I gotta get on the beam.

so far I've listened to dogchode's mixtape, some of it was p good. the twilight 22 song is really gay I like it a lot

seriously can you imagine you're at work, Sax and Violins stops playing, you're washing your hands in the restroom and you hear:

Quote
Then again, we're all the same thing in the end
Butterflies lose their wings and ascend
So do friends, memories resurrect a new life for the dead
So any time that you wanna see me
Raise a glass, reminisce take it easy
Just close your eyes I'll be right there with your soul inside
And there's no goodbyes
I wish I had a handkerchief so I could wipe those eyes
I saw my moms at the funeral she spoke so nice
Like "what a great kid,
Don't believe those lies."

Every life first the sun then the night falls
We're all on borrowed time
I'll never say goodbye
Take your time live your life like its last call
Don't wanna see you cry
We'll never say goodbye

I would just be like "nop enope i'm skip a day, bye". this is what happened to adeline and at first i was like HEH GAYWAD but christ I forgot the entire song is just like this.

k this thread is awesome.

flowerpower, liars, le tigre, a place to bury strangers, the raveonetters? nice. i'm gunna dl and listen to the rest of it. i'll start with that one and move on to everyone else's- even if some are just to see what kind music people here are into.

i've liked le tigre for a while. for years no one knew who they were except basically like... huge riot grrrl fans. if anyone here likes them, bikini kill is a similar band that's pretty cool.

2 of the same members I think. different vocals, and I don't think le tigre works as well. they're kinda nerdy which interferes with their punk image and they're more pop-oriented I think? idk the only songs I remember are deceptacon, hot topic, and that one that says "I'll meet you in the street/destroy the right wing"

okay here is my mixtape:

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ngnon2ddy1i

this is basically what i listen to. there is some jangly indie pop in there (twee), some slacker american indie rock, some nice songs that i'm really gay for (the blow especially), touching on riot grrrl a little bit, some 80's stuff (OMD are amazing) but yeah i tried to go for stuff that i haven't seen posted on gw. it's a bit rushed but i think its pretty cool.
