I've got some money from relatives which I'm deciding to spend on an Xbox 360 rpg, though unfortunately I've no idea what to buy. I already own Lost Odyssey (which I've completed) so there's no need to recommend that. I'm definitely not getting Blue Dragon due to it be painfully generic, which is also why I'm not really sure about Tales of Vesperia. The Last Remnant looks pretty interesting, though I hear it's got a bad frame rate. Fallout 3 and Mass Effect also look pretty great, especially Fallout.
Any recommendations?
-
I haven't played Mass Effect although whoever I know who has literally starts humping thin air whenever they talk about it so I'd probably recommend that. Don't get me wrong - fallout 3 is amazing but at the same time it's just dull for long periods in places.
-
Judging by what little I know about you, I doubt Oblivion, Fallout 3, or Mass Effect would be what you're looking for.
-
Yeah, a little more info on what you think constitutes a good RPG would be nice.
The closest thing I've played to a good RPG on the 360 is still Fallout, though. It's got a huge world with loads upon loads of shit to do in it, and literally every decision you make in the game comes with some sort of moral consequence. Plus if you don't run through the storyline as quickly as possible you can easily spend 40+ hours exploring, meeting new folks, and collecting awesome items and new weapons. It's also really goddamn pretty.
I didn't like Mass Effect very much, but the experience may be different since you're going to be playing it on a console and not for PC. I thought the combat was clunky and sometimes your partners will make unbelievably retarded decisions that make them more of a burden than anything. And yeah, there's that retarded shit where you get to go WOO 4-WHEELIN' on the surface of planets looking for scrap metal and secret ninjas holed up in shacks or whatever.
-
I don't really know about Oblivion. It seems like the kind of game you'd have to spend a lot of time on, though I heard Fallout 3 is similar. I've more experience playing jrpgs rather than western ones, though I don't really care about where the game comes from as long as it's got both a pretty good/fun battle system and story.

What kind of RPG? Like jRPG?

Yeah Oblivion you clock a lot of time simply exploring dungeons, doing side quests (there's a SHITLOAD), and so on. Fallout 3 is a good game, but its less playtime. Not as many quests to complete. If you look at the achievements for the game, there's all these achievements for completing quests...and that's it. Those achievements count up all the quests (except for maybe 1 or 2 very tiny things) and even though quests aren't long sometimes.
If you would get Oblivion or Fallout 3, I'd suggest Oblivion. Or go back and pick up the GOTY edition of Morrowind for original Xbox (it still plays on 360 I believe). Or you could get both, whatever!
As far as jRPG then go with like Mass Effect I guess? It's a pretty good game and I've played it quite a few times over! It depends on what kind of person you are, if you'll get bored with it or not. But Mass Effect is the only "jRPG" I have, aside from Lost Odyssey which you have.
-
Yeah definitely check out Fallout 3, there's not much else I can say about it that anyone else hasn't said. Though; It's one of the few games just now that I've bothered to buy, and imo one of the few that is actually worth 40 quid atm
but JRPG wise I'd advise Eternal Sonata. It's not breaking any boundaries of originality.....but it looks pretty, and the whole Chopin's dream world idea is fairly "neato"

Eternal Sonata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owrBn3S1_3o)

-
Awwwwww.... they changed the name.
-
I just got a 360 and have been looking at eternal sonata. On the one hand it prominently features tons of anime which is a huge negative for me, on the other hand it apparently is about a dream chopin had which sounds rad as hell.
Haven't started Mass Effect yet but I'll let you know what I think when I do, I've also been thinking of picking up fallout 3 as I loved fallout 2 and also loved oblivion.
-
why does an anime dream based on a made up idea of a dead composer's last moments that doesn't even have an exclusively chopin soundtrack appeal to you.

I'm not sure but it seems rather different than the plots of most rpgs, it just seemed interesting and I'm not sure why!
-
i tried playing eternal sonata but had to turn off after 15 minutes; it's like a game based on FFX-2's intro and FFX's laugh scene mixed with anime and chopin-remixes.
-
I have played:
-Lost Odyssey
-Eternal Sonata
-Tales of Vesperia
-Infinite Undiscovery
and am now playing Last Remnant
I'd suggest out of those, definitely LAST REMNANT, but Lost Odyssey is good too. Last Remnant got horrible reviews, but they are def. all unreflective of the game. Most of the criticisim came from horrible load times and lag, but if you install the game into your hard-drive, it's hardly a problem. So Last Remnant gets my vote. Game Trailer's review was the only one I agree with.
Eternal Sonata was fun, but the storyline was abysmal in my opinion.
-
Within half an hour of playing Eternal Sonata I was ready to smack Chopin with his baton. I enjoyed the game, otherwise but yeah, I was unprepared for the long ass history lessons the game gave me. I think, if the storyline had been re-worked to get rid of the stupid 'fever dreams' angle then it may have been a better game. Even with its issues, though, if you're looking to sink 20+ hours into a game, Eternal Sonata is a half-decent game to look at.
I have both Oblivion and Fallout 3 and I enjoy both of them. They take time and effort and you do spend most of your time doing side quests but, for the most part, the games are fun to play. If you can only afford one, get the 'Game of the Year' edition of Oblivion because it's got all of the expansion packs built right into the game.
I've watched my brother play Tales of Vesperia and it seemed like a decent game, but I can't recommend it one way or another because I've never played it.
-
I'm watching my brother play Tales of Vesperia right now.
It's shitty. I don't know man, it looks shitty. It's all anime, and bad dialogue, and anime, and bad voice acting and anime. The battles all look like they take place in perfectly square arenas with no obstructions or anything. You don't even need to play it. Just watching it is like "oh how dumb". Like MAYBE if you're actually the one playing it the battle system is good and it MIGHT redeem it, or it gets better later on but I doubt it.
It's a shitty game. Don't get Tales of Vesperia. Fuck video games, if this is what we've come to.
-
Here's a list of jRPGs on the system I can think of:
Enchanted Arms
Eternal Sonata
Lost Odyssey
Infinite Undiscovery
Last Remnant
Tales of Vesperia
Under no circumstances should you pick up Enchanted Arms. Infinite Undiscovery is also pretty terrible. I love the game at times, but I've always been sort of DETERMINED to enjoy it. It is a very flawed game but it's fun in parts I guess? It's a pretty terrible game and I don't think many people would like it.
Lost Odyssey has fantastic production values and is also pretty good, sans a massive difficulty spike near the start of Disc 4, but eh, still very good! Eternal Sonata's probably my favourite game I have on 360, it's just a lot of FUN for some reason. I'm a pretty big music nerd so at times it was like "uhhrhgklfdjalfkdas" but in the end you just have to switch that off because it's a very fun RPG.
Last Remnant I haven't gotten yet, will do after I finish a couple of other games. Vesperia doesn't even have a release date down here in Aus, so!
Also as for WESTERN RPGS, Mass Effect is pretty good! The storyline is really really short but there's a lot of stuff to do on the side. Fallout is great, and I'd definitely recommend that over Oblivion, but then again I could never get into Oblivion. I've tried to play it so many times and it's just do... dull.
so yeah! gogo
-
I kept trying to rent last remnant but blockbuster doesn't stock it and that sucks
-
If you want to be IMMERSED, then Mass Effect is your game. There is seriously an entire backstory on the whole universe as long as you take the time to do everything. Just be prepared to read...a lot. The interface is kind of bad on the 360, but the dialogue is very good. It's way better than the Bethesda games when you compare the cutscenes and voice acting. Driving on the planets is kind of dumb at times, but it's okay when there is action going on.
Fallout 3 is a blast, but only if you take the time to do the quests. IMO, the sidequests were so much more fun than the main storyline. I put about 60 hours into the game, so if you're looking for something lengthy with great quests (which are superior to Oblivions), get it.
So I would go with Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. Try Last Remnant too, even though Square-Enix is horrible with the Unreal engine.
-
Mass Effect is cool except it takes like 6 hours to beat so yeah have fun with that I guess
-

At least your blockbuster doesn't have mostly VHS tapes :welp:
-
just don't get any of those RPGs. from what i've played of them, mass effect is kind of nice sometimes but it's about as clever as a bad episode of star trek enterprise and as fun as any shoot em up with crappy shooting and loads of unorganised weapons and menu screens. aside from COOL I CAN GO A SPACE (which you actually can't outside of selectin' from up to and including half a dozen planets which feel randomly generated even though they aren't and are generally featureless).
what was i saying.
these games all fucking stink don't spend money on them. do not get eternal sonata, just don't do it. don't get the last remnant, infinite undiscovery, tales of whatever the fuck - don't get any of them. you don't need them! they are stupid and if you play them, they will actively make you stupider. they are just awful shit and they should be laughed at for 3 minutes on youtube, if not just totally ignored.
oblivion is not fun and once you realise it's scale is entirely artificial (same 4 voices everywhere, generic dialogue choices, dungeons all look and sound exactly the same and everything is just green. paste a tree here there and look a bush over in the exapanse. pile of shit.), it stops even being impressive. i mean, get a loan of it from a friend and have a wander around for an hour or two. at that point the game will still seem cool, probably. but even then, all of the dialogue (all of it) is terrible, the music plays on rotation and makes exploring everywhere seem even less varied than it actually is. it is rote high fantasy bullshit for 400 hours. i haven't played fallout 3 but i'm betting it'll be exactly the same deal as this.
all of these games make me mentally numb.
-
mass effect is okay. idk, it's playable and better than the average jrpg. it is like kotor in terms of quality so if you liked kotor you would like mass effect. the story is standard epic scifi nonsense, and jamie is about right when he says it is on par with STAR TREK EPISODE in terms of characters/writing. the gameplay is better than he describes it as, tho. it is somewhat buggy and the ai was UGH at times, but i always felt a difference between weapons and idk, treating it like a 3rd person shooter, it was alright. i mostly TOOK COVER, FIRED GUN, TOOK SOME MORE COVER, etc. the magic system is worthless and in fact i just remembered it even had magic; that is how worthless it was. it plays like a pretty standard run/gun/take cover game except probably a bit slower-paced and more rpgish i guess?? it's an ok game, though. it's probably about as good as you're going to get. most of the fun i had with it was READING ABOUT GAS GIANTS//EXPLORING PLANETS and finding random dead bodies on them. ahaha i just realized the most fun i had with this game was reading about gas giants. jesus christ, i should just stop playing games.
don't play lost odyssey. don't ever play this game.
-
by reading about gas giants you dont mean the ones that were just all ATMOSPHERE MADE OF HELIUM etc I hope but the actual planets.
because I did a bit of that too when it seemed interesting.
-
Yeah the magic is worthless, and the companions that are good in tech or the other one (biotic?) sucked because if you tried to tell them what to cast you could never pick which enemy you wanted to hit (afaik). If you were in cover and your ally wasn't, you would have to come out of cover to find an open area, open the battle menu screen and HOPE that there is a target you can hit. Even then it sucks because most of the moves are "send enemy flying in the air" or "disable shields", when you can just customize your weapons to do the exact same thing. I also kind of wish the dialogue was more than the standard good, neutral, and bad. Sometimes it didn't even matter what you picked because the npcs said the exact same thing. There weren't enough options throughout the game where your stats could influence the conversation. It is a cool game though, which is why I would get it over the other games right now. It is probably cheap, anyway.
-
I'm sorry, how is Mass Effect a JRPG?
-

yeah all planets actually. i just like saying gas giants. i read about them too, tho. literally the most interesting part of the game was reading about planets and being like HUH, IS THAT SO.
-
no one called mass effect a jrpg???
-
whats wrong with you guys? i went though the whole game using biotics and tech moves(kinda had to given my class), mostly using my pistol for clean up(the stasis upgrade practically made the game too easy).
-

I did that for the most part too, but about 30 minutes into the game I realized that it was a mistake because all the tech abilities sucked and I was stuck with some dumb pistol and couldn't use any of the cool weapons.
-
Once you get some decent upgrades a pistol can fuck shit up, the only other weapon that would have been worth using was the sniper. Tech skill were no where as good as the biotics, unless you were fighting the robots(the hacking skill was great, to bad only pure tech users got it).
-
Yeah I was sort of that way too. I went the soldier/biotic guy and used a pistol/shotgun for most of the game because I'd just use float on them and then hit them with the shotgun. Always used the shotgun! Then I got an assault rifle WAY at the end of the game but my character was shit with it.
I liked my magic character :(
-
My guy in Mass Effect is so powerful now that killing anything is pathetically easy. I've beat the game three times with him now, and the last time the final boss was about as difficult as a Geth Colossus. I love the game, but having played it four times now, starting over with a new character just feels so tedious.
I'm playing Fallout 3 now (PC), and it's been a lot of fun so far. It's amazing seeing every pile of rubble looking different, rather than the same pile over and over, just rotated or a slightly different shade or color. I like this game a lot more than Oblivion because the decisions you make actually make a difference, and you can be noticeably evil.
Oblivion was fun for the combat, but the hideously ugly NPCs, the total lack of a diverging plot, and lame character interactions give the game no replayability. I played the game from start to finish within about two days, and every time I've tried to go back to it, I realize how crappy it really was.
Anyway, now Fable 2 is on the 360, and I've been hearing good stuff about it. I hope this comes out on the PC really soon because I want to play it.
-
wait can you load old characters into new games in mass effect?
or did it have to be same difficulty or something?
-
Yea, I loaded my character right into a harder difficulty as soon as I beat the game on Normal. Not much harder, I have to say.
-
A good rule of thumb is to never play a game with "Tales of" in front of it's title. Other then that, I don't really know what to tell you. I can't even remember the last new commercial RPG (Japanese or otherwise) I actually enjoyed. I'm not sure if the 360 can play these games, but KOTOR 1 and 2 are pretty good. From the same people who made Mass Effect. A game I can't really comment on being that I haven't played it for myself just yet.
-
Wasn't the second KOTOR made by someone else? Also get Fable 2 it's a lot better then the original, though it is missing the underground fighting arenas. those were awesome.

KOTOR 2 was made by Obsidian, but they had a lot of the same people from the first KOTOR working on it (from what I remember).
The first KOTOR is far superior to the second in terms of storytelling and characters, but the sequel has a much better combat system.
I've been playing Fallout 3 the past few days, and I think I'm going to start another character as soon as I beat it. I want to see where all the different branches in the story go. The sheer number of possibilities in the game is amazing.
-
If tech problems are your only concern, from your list I would recommend the Last Remnant. After you install it, it is fine. I think it was intended to be installed.
However I am not sure you would actually like the game. It is a pretty cool jRPG but it is also sort of esoteric in terms of mechanics. It was directed by Kawazu and is 100% a SaGa game. It might have even been called a SaGa game in Japan. So if you liked SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa etc then get it! It is super rad. If you like jRPGs with more direction and more obvious mechanics that generally just make more sense (Final Fantasy), though, you should pass.
