Title: Steam Holiday BARGAINS
Post by: Supra Mairo on December 28, 2008, 01:16:51 am
So now that it's the holiday season some games that are available through Steam have gone down in price a bit, some more, some less.

I'm just curious if anyone can tell if there's some games here that are like ABSOLUTELY GOOD BARGAIN and shit. I already own TF2, Portal and L4D from there so leave those out.

There's a whole lot of fucking games and I know next to nothing about any of them so if anyone could recommend something then I could go and spend time researching said game(s) to see if I'd like it at all.

Bioshock is for 5€ which seems like a good bargain but I dunno, I never really gave two shits about that game. There's also Doom 1 and Doom 2 for 1 euro each but why would I buy them? I know from skulltag that no one plays them and the single-player is so played through that it doesn't interest me.

I can also tell that I have no interest for World of Goo nor Aquaria.

What is Savage 2? Is it sort of like a mismatch between an RTS and a FPS? It looks good enough and it's just 5 euros.

I noticed that there is actually multiple pages worth of these bargain games but what the fuck man, how can I view them all? Does this include EVERY steam distributed game?

Well anyway there's a Dawn of War collection pack thing which seems pretty rad but man I have no idea if I'll like that so I'll have to look up some further reviews. Talking about RTS games, Multiwinia is there also for 5 euros but I've heard that it has a pretty niche playerbase but I'm going to buy it anyhow because the demo was really fun.

EDIT: Well yes, yes it does apply to all of them. I thought it was just CERTAIN games but it's all of them.

Well, there are some indie games selling for only 99 cents. That's a pretty good deal I'd say, even if they're easy to pirate.

If you have HL1 but not the expansions, the expansions are only 99 cents each. Also, Red orchestra is only 7.49, All the Unreal games are 19.99 in a pack, Audiosurf is only 4.99. Theres some other good savings out there, but i cant be bothered to dig past the main page.

yea i picked up left 4 dead on sale for a pretty nice deal, which was good because we only had 3 out of 4 people willing to go in on a 4 pack.

Or buy HL1 retail CD for 99 cents. When you add an HL retail key to steam it adds every single expansion pack (including things like CS/DoD) to your account.

just got tf2. I can't even play it for a week but 10 dollars is a steal. I really like how steam works, I don't even need to have steam installed to buy games.

What is gamefly?

You pay a minimum $16 a month and they send you a game.  When you're done with it, you send it back and they send you another.
It's like NetFlix, except with video games.

He may have meant GameTAP, a distribution service.  http://www.gametap.com

I was looking into gametap once for all the cool little arcade games there but i heard the emulation of said games was terrible.
EDIT: Alright im actually thinking of getting this gametap thing, but ive gotta ask, is gametap itself shit? Cause i would rather buy the game and spare myself from shitty annoying programs than have to tolerate bullshit.

yeah the steam weekend deals and shit are actually legitimately great. I sort of like Titan Quest but I never owned it and lost the files I had downloaded ages ago but then Steam had it and the expansion together for like 10 bucks one weekend. You can't really go wrong, you can't even go to a theatre for that cheap and even if you only get a week of playtime from them, it's still a pretty good value.

you have to launch the games from gametap which can get annoying and some of the games (most notably the fighting games) suffer from rare slowdown, but otherwise it's pretty solid for the price.

if you're gonna get it you might as well go gold, it's worth it if only for sam & max which is fucking awesome

From what I can tell, it uses a similar mechanic to battlefield 2. This confused me though; I went to their website and it's free to try (with an account costing 9.99; a one time fee I assume). But on steam; it's 7.49 (marked down from 9.99). If you get it off steam, does that mean you get an account with that, or are they just selling you something you can get for free off their webpage?

The game is completely free now. That's the cost of a "premium" account, which gives you some very minor advantages. The game plays as an RTS for the leader of the group, while the others are pawns with free will ordered around by the leader, who play the game like an FPS.

What they're selling on Steam now is a premium account as well.

I was glancing over some of the deals that they have on Steam, and I figured that I have plenty of FPSs already; I am looking to buy Spore. Aside from it being a mild disappointment(according to some sources), how good would you guys say it is?

Well, I'd sa...

Don't fucking buy it.

Buy Savage 2 instead, it's indie, much cheaper; and actually fun.

Warez the creature creator instead. All the fun there is to be had in Spore, for no price at all!

It could be free and it would still be too expensive for what little fun you will get out of it. It has all the depth of a flash game. Buying another copy of an FPS you already own would be a better use of your money. It's that lame.

I felt like a dick giving 3 people Spore for free from a contest, that's how bad it is.
