I'm constantly
pirating downloading stuff to my hard drive. I have so many files and programs it gets overwhelming. So I use a little organization system to make my life much easier. I have my Start menu sorted into categories (utilities, games, media, internet, programming, etc) so I never have to strain my eyes looking for a certain program. It's all sorted so I know right where it is. I keep a folder for all my media that I download called "Shared" (meaning its shared between my home network). I have a Videos folder, which has subfolders of TV, Movies, Documentaries, etc. I have a CD Images folder, a pictures folder, a games folder, an emulation folder, and a to-be-sorted folder. It's kind of time consuming keeping my files organized but if everything isn't perfectly sorted, I go nuts.
So how do you guys keep track of all your shit? Do you categorize everything like I do or just put it anywhere? I always though I was one of the only people who does this.

My hard drive is like my room, it looks unorganized and messy, but at least I know where everything is.
-
Pretty basic really. Games go in GAMES folder, music goes in MUSIC folder, pictures go in PICTURES folder etc etc.
-
i used to have a bad habit of collecting a bunch of shit on my desktop, then throwing it in a folder with a stupid name, then putting all those folders somewhere else, and eventually put a bunch of them into another new folder with a dumb name.
i have music, movies, books, software, and "etc" as the root folders in my main storage drive. i will add subfolders when necessary, like in books i have computers, design, guitar, crap like that.

Deleting stuff helps.
Oh, and tagging.

Whent hings gets too messy I reformat

Seriously. I just went through all of my drives and got rid of everything but music, transfered PSDs and textures to an external HD, and formated every drive. It's great.
Unless you have some sort of emotional attachment to downloads you know you aren't going to use any time soon (like games you already played and videos you already watched) there is no reason to keep them around.

I get emotionally attatched all the time. Even if it's like a video I've already watched or a game I don't feel like playing. I always think, "If you delete this you're going to need it 3 days later."

pretty much nothing stays on either of my computers' hard drives for long, instead everyting is mvoed to the external
on it:
work: website one, project 2, etc
personal: photos, art, music, pictures
basically. though lately its been getting pretty messy :S i like to keep everything organized. i want to get a second hard drive which would be an exact replica of the one on i have now just in case of anything.

this is still the stage i'm at.

I used to do that too, but now I try my best to keep everything in reasonable places and/or with reasonable names.

Four folders:
Games
Apps
Installers
Documents
I think Documents is the only folder I make subfolders to (i.e. pictures, eBooks, school)

I attempt to keep my personal files, standalone/portable applications, and various other goodies in a single folder off the root. It makes it easier to move files between drives for backup purposes. Miscellaneous files are kept in the main folder. Stuff like TV shows I tend to keep on the desktop, since they're mostly the watch-then-delete type. Anything worth saving goes straight into the appropriate folder.
I realize this isn't the most effective organization structure, so any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Compared to my room, my folders are fairly organized:
I also have other levels for each folder. (e.g. under Install: Drivers, Fonts, Plugins, Utilities, Games, Programming, Multimedia, General, etc.)
I almost never browse folders anymore, however. It's much easier to just search with Google Desktop or something similar.
-
Uhhh I have all my important files on the external hard drive, and I like to keep it organized.
Basically
Anime (Most stuff in there is real anime, but I have some TV series in there too like Goosebumps or Eerie Indiana)
Downloads (All the stuff that comes from Limewire, uTorrent, or w/e. I put it in a different folder when it's done)
Movies (All non-anime movies)
Games (All types of games, roms, dos games, pc games, etc etc)
School (All my school stuff)
Graphics (Everything graphical. Avatars, signatures, wallpaper, pictures, everything goes in here)
Music
RPG Maker (RPG Makers and projects, RTPs)
Tutorials (I keep tutorials for most Adobe programs here, and 3DsMax)
That's pretty much it. Simple and clean.

Anime
Why you do this?
-
Because I gotta catch em' all.

This.

Pretty basic really. Games go in GAMES folder, music goes in MUSIC folder, pictures go in PICTURES folder etc etc.
My computer is set up like this too. Everything has a specific folder so that when I need it, I don't have to run around trying to look for it.

2beers you are very organized. i find it funny for some reason that even your porn is neatly organized into seperate folders. anything i want to hide on my computer i keep tucked away in secret locations.. hahhaha
-
I have a 750GB drive which is ONLY used for Piracy. Not organized at all.
As for my Windows drive, I have a bunch of images and music I've saved from other sites, totally unorganized as well.
In fact, the images aren't even named. It's hell to deal with this. But I have at least a thousand of images (literally), so it's not very easy to organize them.
I guess I have basic organization for image and music, since I put them in My Pictures and My Music, but it ends there.
