Eversion is this random little platformer made by Zaratustra (who has a bunch of other indie games to his name already) made for TIGSource’s Commonplace Book Competition. The concept behind Eversion is that to get past certain obstacles you have to press the ‘everse’ button at certain spots in the game causing the entire game to change with everything getting progressively darker, initially starting from a happy cheerful platformer to ending up eventually at oh-god-why-is-everything-trying-to-kill-me. The entire game transforms as you go, with enemies (and the scenery!) getting replaced with more dangerous versions, entire levels taking on gloomier feels, including the nice touch of the cheerful music from world 1 (gleefully ripped from Cocoron) just turning downright grim as you go through the game.

This is fantastic.
-
This game is so awesome, you get to change the mood of the atmosphere to get past obstacles and crap. Man too awesome but I got stuck on world 4.
-
How can you get stuck in this? o.o
Maybe only on the last two levels, but only if you need all the gems to pass each level. I have no idea if you do or not

yeah same here... i failed 4th world 200 times. i always jump on those fucking red hands :(

Zara makes some really good games. He made a game called Zeus's World way back when, and it was a very good Super Mario World clone. It's worth checking out if you can find it. He made a revamped version of it and called it Zeta's World I think and sells it online now. I don't know how much he sells it for, but I remember that Zeus's World was good enough I would have paid money for it.

Ok, someone please help me, how the fuck do I get past this bastard red hand?
I have literally tried a mission freaking times...it's making me go crazy :fogetinsane: and what makes it worse is that I'm super shit at platform games.
I mean who would wanna hurt the little guy man, look at him he's only got two big eyes and tiny feet :sport:

EDIT: OMFG I didn't know you could go through the black parts of the hand... :fogetcry:

LOL i can't believe you got stucked there, i passed that at first try :x
-
I got stuck like three levels in. There are some clouds at the bottom and I everse to go through them and then I go through and there are trees blocking it and stuff :( Brain not functioning enough at this hour of the day!
-
Every notice how the level design is a bit...weird?
That bit is pretty obvious man.
-
nope im still stuck
I mean I tried jumping at the little brick and trying to hit the enemies or something? Someone throw me a bone.

Each of those little rooms has a part for you to everse through. Just keep going and keep eversing.
Also, the last levels freaked me out.
I SEE YOU

This game is cool. I didn't get all the gems so I got BAD END
-
Oh, it's a bad end?
I probably like the bad end more than I'll ever like the good end.
-
I got all the gems and I got a 'bad' ending Doozer. I don't know if it makes a different tbh.
-
Was it the one where
Everything everses to a HUGE BLACKNESS and the smiley blocks turn into eyes and the princess turns into a monster and you can't do shit and right before the princess starts devouring you you see this HUGE eye and then the game says GAME OVER and shuts itself down?
-
To get the good ending, get all the gems then hit the new eversion at the start of the final world.
Have fun :>
-
I can't figure out how to get all the gems for the life of me
Guess I'll never get the good ending :(
-
Heh the bulk of the game is in World 7. I'm only a few gems away from having them all but I think I'll continue this later.
-
Just beat it(with all gems). Pretty cool, but the last level is annoying.

I'm sorry but that was awesome, and I apologise for laughing at this.
This game is certainly dark, about as dark as that comic about a serial killer painting a wall red with blood, and tried to be humorous about it (it is humorous to a degree but it's not for everyone I can tell you that). Someone should make another game that uses the same concept except reverse where everything is dark and grim at the start but you change the atmosphere to a happier one instead.
-
I just finished this with the good ending. The good ending is pretty clever.
-
Yeah, thanks Jester. That should've been obvious with the blatant hint there, but oh well.
The proper last level was really cool, but it wasn't really anywhere near as good as the rest. Without the gems it's just a straight dash to the end and it's not that challenging. Kind of wish I didn't bother now! Nice ending though.
-
The proper last level was infuriating if only for one part where you have to wait for the enemies to move and then dig through the breakable stones
But I did find something that will help alot of people: how to get to the proper last level without all gems. It's really simple, too.
On level 7, when you reach the end, if there's a monster around, wait til he's close to the flag and bounce off of him over the flag. You should land behind it, and still be able to move. Leave the screen to the right, and just keep jumping. You'll eventually reach another flag without noticing, leading you to level 8.
-
hurray!! i beat it :D
now i need to complete it with all the gems!
-
The true ending was really cute, but I still like the bad end better.
-
@Boulvae: It's alright to laugh I fell off my chair when it happened...
-
I quit when I got to the same spot SupremeWarrior did and died, not feeling like going through that gauntlet of "eversioning" at the beginning of that level.
I didn't like this game that much, mostly because I don't like that you can only use the eversion in certain spots. I think the idea could've been expanded on a ton.
-
Yeah they should show where the Eversion points are.
-
They do, all the Everse points have both tracks playing, and a mixed tinted background for the two worlds. Unless itès hidden then once you Everse the first time it will do the mix background tint and both tunes playing thing.
-
Neither of the download links work for me! Anyone else get this problem?
EDIT: Ok it works now.
-
Being able to everse at will would be so shit. The later levels you would just everse to make them really nice and fluffy.
-
I don't know, after the red hands started coming out I couldn't really see that light hearted happy fun fluffiness. It actually started to look a little creepy and morbid (the happy toon world(s?)).
-
yeah but if you could everse whenever you want no one would ever see the creepy red hands because they'd keep it set to level 1 eversion
learn 2 read
-
so jester will you come back full time or will you take it slow until it breaks in and we get used to you again
I really am for the first option, just so you know, I missed you on IRC guy!
Also the level design on this reminds me a lot of old gameboy platformers for some reason. Color-wise too.
-
That wouldn't be feasibly possible because you HAVE to everse to darker tones just to be able to obtain the diamonds. Level 1 eversion would only allow you to hit the bottom of those face blocks, and some enemies would not be their/be untouchable but thats it. You can't stand on clouds, you can't break blocks, and you can't move past those flower walls in the Level 1 world. And it doesn't matter what world your in the wall of death would still come for you and the princess would devour you anyways for not getting all the gems, i'm sure of it. And the lightest dark tone to let you move past those plant wall obstacles, is also where the creepy hands appear.
-
this is an excellent but short game. is zara working on anything right now? i really really enjoyed this.
-
But the point is you'd just everse to the right world to get past an obstacle/get a gem, and then you would immediately everse back to the first world again. There wouldn't be any challenge at all, because all the 'obstacles' (to be spoiler free) you could just avoid easily.
-
It's one button guys, your only changing the fact that you'll Everse whenever, not what your Eversing to. Unless your trying to cycle through, in which case the obstacles would make a comeback anyways. And then you'd never be able to look at the level 1 world again. Since the darker tones you'd inevitably Everse too the first (first playthrough) time will make it look more creepy and unsettling over anything. And not all of the obstacles are avoidable by eversing, infact it's only make said unavoidable obstacles a different appearance.
-
his point was people would take the easiest route, and unless you are trying to jump on a cloud or get past a tree that'd be level 1 eversion.
stop arguing this, it's a really really obvious easy flaw in your everse anywhere idea.
-
What? Ummm, mine was reversing the tones from dark to lighter tones when you Everse in a possible sequal. Not Eversing anywhere, anytime. That was my idea.
I only got into this argument cause I could.
-
What? That doesn't make any sense or have anything to do with what you were talking about earlier. Also
And not all of the obstacles are avoidable by eversing, infact it's only make said unavoidable obstacles a different appearance.
Isn't the the EXACT point of eversing? To get past these obstacles? If you couldn't ever get past them then the game would be impossible.
To give an example:
On the final level, once you everse back to level one you can run from the very start of the level to the very end of the level and neither meet a single obstacle nor risk death in any way whatsoever, unless you mistime a jump. The ONLY reason to everse would be to make that last jump at the end. You would do this by eversing to a point where you could jump onto the ledge, then immediately verse back to the first world and just run across without the hands popping out. If you were going for gems the same thing applies, as you just get to the spot with an obstacle, everse until you can pass it, and then everse back to 1 again.
-
Okay... I see, were on very different pages here. I'd like to be clear. I agree the First world tone is easy and that people naturally walk a straight line over going around and back again if they don't have too. However after you experience the other Eversed points, the first Level world is creepy in feeling. And you'd have to Everse to move past obstacles so you can't avoid seeing the darker underlays (although one or two points arn't bad per se) and thus not being able to see the first world as sunshine and lollipops. Unless your somebody that just randomly downloads games that people say are good without looking at the description for it, you'd be aware of darker undertones but atmospherically the Level 1 world is going to come off as creepy once you witness those really dark worlds.
The wall of death is an unavoidable obstacle, as far as i'm concerned. With only colour being the difference in appearance. And the true last level, about 1-3 have blocks that prevent you from progressing at all quite literally out of no where, which was pretty poor and annoying design.
-
I genuinely have absolutely no idea what you're talking about anymore.
Level 1 is creepy? What the hell? It's fluffy and full of pseudo-bunnies, flowers and happiness. There is NOTHING creepy about it.
-
Level 1 is creepy after you experience the other worlds, like the Happy Tree Friends kinda creepy.
I genuinely have absolutely no idea what you're talking about anymore.
I blame the way I worded a few of my posts, this was after re-reading some of my previous posts on this thread. And how I read other peoples posts.
-
This game had an amazing feel to it and I just wish they took it further. Maybe the hype it's getting will push it towards something with a bit more substance... because it'd be a shame of an awesome idea like this goes unused.
-
Glitch I mentionned in spoiler tags in an earlier post. How to reach World 8 without all the gems :)
-
It's not a glitch. It was put there intentionally.
It's good to blast through the game to show people how creepy it is though.
-

It's good to blast through the game to show people how creepy it is though.
So you're saying being able to get the reward for getting all the gems WITHOUT getting all the gems is... intentional?
What kind of decision would that be, seriously? :fogethuh:
-
There is no memory leak. No glitch. No bug. It's just something that was put off screen on the last stage. Something that would have been fixed by now should it have been a bug (since there have been fixes since it was released). All they'd have to do is block the side off... but they don't. They just leave it there.
Also... if the focus was on the actual "game" elements you wouldn't have unlimited deaths and the score board wouldn't go insane and eventually fall off. There would also be more of a focus on the puzzle aspect that eversing[sp?] introduces us to rather than of the creepiness that it brings.
-
Yes, because not fixing a bug clearly stops something from being a bug.
-
it's a secret or "easter egg" guys
-
I just got to playing this game, and I absolutely loved the feel and atmosphere.
There are few examples of Postmodernism in gaming yet, but with the scoreboard scrambling and falling off from worlds 6-7, and the creepy messages replacing the level start message as you progress, this is seriously giving me some neat ideas for another postmodern project I've been mulling over for a few years.
-
Uh...what has any of this got to do with postmodernism? I think there's such a thing as reading too much into a game.
-
i don't, and i encourage such courageous tendencies.
Many Thanks, Sir!
