Title: Mr. Roarke is Dead!
Post by: Marcus on January 15, 2009, 02:12:00 pm
Welcome to Heaven!  Where all your fantasies come true!

Ricardo Montalban (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/14/ricardo.montalban/) passed away yesterday at 88 apparently from natural causes.  Nice ripe old age, too, not like most of the deaths from 2008.

Man fuck 2008.

EDIT: For those of you who don't know who this guy is, he's one of the more prominent latino actors in America, beginning his career amidst the 40s where stereotypes and prejudice were all too commonly leveled against anyone who wasn't white.

Jesus, for a moment, my heart sank because I thought you'd meant MICKEY ROURKE. lol

I've never seen Fantasy Island. The old one, anyway. The only one I'm familiar with is the one with Malcolm McDowell as Rourke.

Same here.

But ONLY because I already knew about Richardo Montalban and this would have been more bad news by now.

A mexican actor in california in the 1940s who was taken seriously as an actor in a time when anyone who wasn't white was used as an extra, stereotype, or inept side-kick designed to make the hero look smart.

Jesus Christ, are you people really this bad?  Like Niitaka almost started a flame war by bring up Patrick McGoohan but both actor's pretty much had the same importance in their respective countries.  Both of them refused to be cast as dumbasses and demanded respect from an audience that didn't give two shits because OMG MEXICAN IN MY WHITE HOLLYWOOD!

The dude even broke his back while filming a movie in the 50s and LIVED WITH THE PAIN for 40 years before getting surgery (which confined him to a fucking wheel chair) while still starring in more movies and tv shows than most healthy actors.

haha I didn't say anything about importance thanks for putting words in my mouth, I just think you might have overstated the stigma of being Mexican in the Mexican-American heartland that is California, in comparison to an Irishman in 50s/60s/70s Britain.

edit: talking about typecasting because of his background but naming the topic 'mr. roarke is dead!' :fogetmmh:

And yes the Trek Curse! I die a little inside each time one of the cast members pass away. They were supposed to live forever... FOREVER MAN! *cry*

do you even know your american history?

1940s california was not this blissfully wonderful world where hispanics were a respected demographic.  and nowhere in my post did I say anything about importance perhaps you're feeling guilty rockman?

what does this even mean??

are you trying to start a fight over "which actor accomplished the most?"  are you suggesting that segregated america and prejudice britain are on two different levels here?  that the rights of a particular race and the rights of a particular nationality are on two separates levels of importance?  this is like someone saying "hey, american slavery was worse than apartheid amirite?"

I don't even know what kind of point you're making here but to me you sound like you're saying Montalban had it EASY in a country that's been racially divided since its creation.

Sound stupid nothing.  I just want some clarification here.  Do we really want to start a argument on WORTH by saying "Irishman in prejudice Britain = more important than Hispanic in prejudice America?"

i mean

what is this even supposed to be mean?  THERE'S IRISH ACTORS IN BRITAIN WHOAH I TOTALLY DIDN'T KNOW!  McGOOHAN IS AMERICAN-IRISH WOW THIS IS EVEN BETTER!  SARCASM HIDES MY IGNORANCE GO ME

Rockman replies with

implying that american-irish in britain has a rougher time than mexican in california

Can you not defend this statement?  I can't call you out on it because you imply I'm putting words in your mouth but answer this question

Was your original statement, which I quoted above, not an attack against Montalban's achievements for hispanic actors in a period where America hated anyone who wasn't white and pure?

Just answer that question.  That's all I need to hear because that's where my confusion is being stemmed from.

an irishman in britain in a time where irish people were engaging in guerilla warfare against british rule

oh but wah, i only get bit parts...

do you understand anything about the IRA? any history outside of america?

he is saying that montalbans achievements are not as important as you think they are.

no, not at all, you are reading too much into it.

my feeling on it is that they were in pretty similar situations. do you fully understand the impact of the IRA (the Provisional IRA in this case)? 1800+ civilians died as a result of 'fighting' between the IRA, Ulster loyalists and the UK during a time period that coincided with McGoohan's career, including civilians of both the UK and Ireland as a result of bomb attacks by the IRA. that's people's husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and of course that built a lot of resentment for Irish people in the UK (half of my family can attest to this!), not to mention older people with memories of the war of independence. anglo-irish resentment wasn't even new then, it's been going on for hundreds of years. put in the same context as anti-German feeling after World War II or anti-Muslim feeling after 9/11 (though probably not in the same league) and maybe that'll give a better understanding. it's still no fun and games for an anglo-irishman today!

basically I am saying that both actors had to battle prejudice during their careers and I was making a joke about how you'd singled out montalban for this topic and mentioned his battle with prejudice and forgotten patrick mcgoohan who was in a similar mould. I guess it has been blown out of proportion!

I wouln't have put it in the same way as dom but he is nearly there! I guess what I mean is they are not comparitively better than McGoohan's, they'd just seem so from your point of view.

my point is the reasoning behind making the topic about montalban in the first place. you made the topic about montalban, i made the joke about picking up on montalban and missing mcgoohan (why not combine both similar topics into one easy to manage topic?) and you know the rest. i'm not sure there is even anything to discuss!

fff one joke is not storming into this topic, i was challenged about it and i've answered.

i was gonna make a mcgoohan / montalban topic yesterday but i guess since we've mcgoohan'ed up this topic now it might as well stay that way!

because i didn't even know mcgoohan was dead until niikatakakaktaka mentioned it and i've seen maybe 2 of his films and never noticed he was an exceptional actor or anything.
