(CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama strode down the platform with his family, greeted the conductor, and boarded the Philadelphia train bound for Washington, an ordinary scene that belied the extraordinary significance of the ride. The 137-mile journey from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Washington, D.C. -- where Obama takes the oath of office Tuesday -- retraces the train route taken by his hero Abraham Lincoln as he traveled to assume the presidency in 1861.
Obama is planning to stop in Wilmington, Delaware; and Baltimore, Maryland, along the way. In Wilmington, spirits were high as crowds shivering people gathered, sang and celebrated waiting for the train to pull in.
The train will slow down as it passes through Claymont, Delaware, and Edgewood, Maryland, for what's called a "slow roll," so that Obama can wave at residents who gather near the tracks.
train left this morning. the actual inauguration is Tuesday at 12:00pm iirc, but there will be events starting today and lasting until then, so use this thread as a megathread thing.

A friend of mine is going to DC to see the inauguration in person. I am insanely jealous of them
-
dont be DC is going to be a zoo (heh and an "ape" will be the big exhibit...)
seriously though it is not worth going to this fucking thing holy shit.
two million people
-
i dunno i think now "yeah great let's watch the inauguration of a president who will be at best unacceptable to me and get excited" but i will watch the ceremony and i'll probably get a little shiver at one point.
i wouldn't put any effort into it, though. i mean, i don't really see the appeal besides the first black president part which is what will probably get me, and also that i just know the whole obama entity so well now, but there's too much crap i don't like about him now to overlook.

I don't know, the fact that he's not a fucking Bush or a Reagen worshipper is enough to get me excited.

My parents are renting out my bedroom to a rich couple for 4,000$ a night.
If you live in Virginia, Maryland, or West Virginia within 50 miles of DC then commuter traffic will be a complete bitch and EVERYONE is renting out their homes for insane prices it's ridiculous.
they better not touch my shit
-
I am in northern virginia and i kind of want to go to this since it's only a short metro ride away but holy fuck 2 million people? idk man. the lines are going to be horrendous.
gotta say though, today wasn't really that bad. i guess the influx starts tomorrow?
-
I'd love to be there (when the bullets start flying) but that's just too insane.Like the biggest concentration of people I've ever seen at one time was like 100,000 for a concert and it was still completely ridiculous. I can't imagine 20x that number.
Of course, I live way the fuck up in Canada so I wouldn't be going even if it wasn't going to be crazy. It goes without saying though, that if anyone does go, be sure to post pics (or it didn't happen lol)
-
theres not even 2 million people in canada...

i wonder how many people will be hoping for him to catch a bullet.
not even because they like him but because they paid 20,000 bucks to be there and need it to be worth it.

Do you live along I-95? Good luck going anywhere buddy!
Heh, Monday is Martin Luther King day I'm praying he doesn't catch a bullet that would just be too surreal.

two million people
And two million cops.

I smell a security disaster.

This shit is crazy. TWO MILLION PEOPLE? Glad I don't live up there.
-
Actually, I heard a possible 5 million on MSNBC today.
uh
-
yeah, i heard 5 million too. the terrible thing is that they're not allowing any cars in dc on tuesday and they've closed all the nearby bridges, and i've got a doctor's appointment that requires me to cross one of those bridges. also i was in line yesterday and this guy was bragging about how he was going to the inauguration.
-
My parents are renting out my bedroom to a rich couple for 4,000$ a night.
ahahah dude i was actually going to rent out my room on craigslist but my dad wouldn't let me.

convince him now you might be able to hit five figures from some desperate person.

I heard these desperate people have a thing for garden gnomes... better hide them.
-
i am quite nervous about tomorrow. somebody is going to try to fuck it up.
-
I seriously doubt that
-
I dunno, there are some seriously fucked up people still around in the states. I wouldn't be surprised if more than a few people are true to their death threats and attempt to assassinate Obama. Whether or not they succeed...well, the secret service is pretty fucking good at their job so I highly doubt it!
-
It's more likely that a slew of attempts have already been discovered and stopped, but they're being kept quiet so as not to disrupt the inauguration ceremonies.
I'm sure Obama doesn't want to be remembered for MOST ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS

I'm more worried about the safety of the entire 3-5million people that will be there. I'm fairly confident Obama will be kept absolutely safe. Im assuming they have to close the airspace around DC, right? They'll probably have 20 fighter jets ready to go if, god forbid, some group decides to plan a massive attack from the air on DC. I bet Marcus is on a battleship 100 miles off the coast of Maryland but won't tell us, heh
-
i bet marcus is in all black in the shadows waiting for his shot when suddenly he hears a low frequency sound and becomes an assassin, marcus is the manchurian candidate...
inside him though, he retains enough of his identity to activate his walkie talkie and say 'im...im charging my lazah' and is taken down by police snipers.

WATCH THE PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH
-
i'm getting a huge MLK vibe from this speech.
and i love what he said regarding the recession; how he basically pointed the finger at rich greedy white guys then pointed the finger at the failure to recognize the recession began 8 years ago. I FOR ONE WELCOME OUR NEW DARK OVERLORD

is the world fixed yet
silly 2beers! we already ended racism the world will be fixed in about a week!
According to The Wall Street Journal, Barack Obama's presidential victory means we "can put to rest the myth of racism as a barrier to achievement in this splendid country."
According to columnist Richard Cohen, Obama as President signifies that America is a "post-racial" nation, and that "we have overcome" the vestiges of racism and discrimination.
And according to the Atlantic Monthly, Obama's ascent to the White House may well signify, "The End of White America," or at least the extent to which whiteness remains a privileged "norm."
-
but obama is half-white! clearly the white part of him is what got him here in the first place.

I know that if this were the case, it'd piss me off because I couldn't help but dwell on the question "Where were all the people trying to assassinate Bush when he was in charge?" I mean it would have been pretty much the only chance a presidential assassin would get to be famous in a (somewhat) good way.
Of course the circumstances if Bush were to get killed are different. (I'm positive that picking Cheney for the VP slot was the only smart thing Bush ever did.)

and if cheney kicked the bucket i'd hate to see president conduhleeza riez (8 years and i still can't spell her name)

ted kennedy was rushed out of the presidential luncheon on a stretcher :(

oh fuck, Sen. Byrd AND Sen. Kennedy both had medical problems

We all watched it on the sat tv... I was fucking pumped by the end of his speach. We were all like WOO! YEAH LETS GO BLOW SHIT UP IN THE NAME OF AMERICA! Was funny how he tripped over his oath of office though.

yeah I was like "stupid" when he did it but honestly just imagine being in his place and knowing that the entire WORLD was watching you I most def would have fucked alot of stuff up.

I doubt she's going to live to see 2012.
-
Watched the inauguration at work today... Honestly, his speech sounded great about 'change' basically but we're all just gonna have to wait and see the reality of his decisions and the consequences of those decisions in the months and years to come. Its going to be interesting to see how he handles this Middle East crisis (as well as everywhere else around the world like Darfur), because I already know his general plans domestically for the economy (from basically what he talked about in his campaign run) and it sounds fine but again, we'll have to wait to see his actual decisions and the results of those decisions. Usually, things don't always go as planned.
-
I doubt she's going to live to see 2012.
who rice or pelosi? because i don't like either one of them.

AFAIK, it is secret service policy to not release any information on death threats to the person they are in charge of protecting. So for all we know Bush could have had a revolving door of assassination attempts, but they just got thwarted and kept silent.
-

The Chief Justice was definitely at fault here for changing the order of the words around.
Despite that, it really was an excellent inauguration. I had chills multiple times during the ceremonies. Obama's speech was very good. Overall, a very great day.

I can imagine but can you give a quick resume. Like what, "we gonna kill that nigga" and things like that.

jesus christ aaron mcgruder (boondocks guy) spoke at some college today which broke into his opinions regarding obama
“I don’t think you’re going to see any dramatic change from Barack Obama,” said McGruder, who wore a “Boondocks” T-shirt over a black long-sleeve shirt and jeans. “I’m hoping he proves me completely wrong.”
McGruder bases his opinions of the U.S. presidency on the 2000 election and how nothing has been done since then to change the election system. “It was a sham then … It’s got to still be a sham,” McGruder said. “I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but it’s what I tend to do.”
On the topic of race and ethnicity, McGruder said that to him, Obama is not black because he is not a descendant of a slave.
“The person who is one of us in the White House is Michelle Obama and her momma,” McGruder said.
this guy is a horrible speaker. horrible. oh and
On the topic of race and ethnicity, McGruder said that to him, Obama is not black because he is not a descendant of a slave.
what? let's quote that again
On the topic of race and ethnicity, McGruder said that to him, Obama is not black because he is not a descendant of a slave.
what???
i bet all of the money in my bank that mcgruder isn't a descendent of a slave. i bet all the money in my bank that one of his parents were in fact white or mixed. jesus christ. pretty much nobody in america (except inbred arians and immigrants) has any relation in terms of blood to their original nationality. we're a country of mutts god damn what a faggot
-
man you realize how weak an accusation of racism sounds when you call someone a faggot at the end.
regardless goddam there were a LOT BETTER WAYS to say that. I don't get why he did either, I didn't think he was doing Boondocks Season 3 so what would the press be for?
-
i'm not accusing him of racism i'm accusing him of being dumb. he always carries himself as this supremely knowledgeable "in the know" political advocate and then just says something that i'd expect jessie jackson or a black panther to blurt out.
steel, you're not indian because you don't live in india!
-
like his argument is that obama's experience of being black is limited because he's never had to undergo the same amount of suffering and prejudice that other blacks in this country have; he's always been a privileged son. this is what I would assume he said and he might have! it's not a quote after all so I'm gonna assume it's out of context.
-
article in full (http://www.pal-item.com/article/20090120/NEWS01/901200312)
i'm pretty sure obama has faced plenty of prejudice. privileged or not, he's still brown which in america instantly equates you to being black. it doesn't matter if your daddy's white or your mother, if your skin is brown and you have curly hair you are black. there's no avoiding this. being a influential member in a political system dominated by white people for the past 200+ years... this is an achievement even if money helped him through. i probably would have boo'ed because the comment was completely in the left field.
-
there's still no exact quote and the outrage seems to be more general. no one mentions HE CALLED BARACK NOT BLACK? just HE INSULTED BARACK LIKE THIS?
I dunno BOONDOCKS has always been a relatively sharp show and in Return of the King Macgruder made Oprah the hypothetical president and you know come on. I'm hoping it's out of context!
-
ugh i'm trying to find exact quotes but coming up dry!
i agree with his statements in regards to remaining pessimistic. the guy has only been president for 8 hours and he's still human this isn't the second coming people.
but i also understand that mcgruder is a satirist and a comedian and his entire "image" revolves around pushing buttons and challenging the status quo.
hell, he got me. i get so fucking irrational when mad BLIND FURY
-
aaaaaaand all news posts say the same thing!
i'll give him the benefit of the doubt because i laughed for 2 hours after watching the uncut BET episode
-
the thing is though is macgruder DOING anything? satirists push buttons but usually in their work. an off the cuff statement like this indicates either actual belief or that he's promoting something and getting attention.
-
a third season of boondocks is currently under production but other than that he makes a lot of public appearances
MAN GTFO WITH YOUR RATIONAL THINKING. god damn you're the water to my campfire a nigga can't start a riot without the palidinians taking the charge
-
I remember hearing about this before tho, there are people who say you are only black if you are the descendant of a slave, otherwise you're just african-american. personally I think he can be black but I don't really understand the situation.
-
that inauguration poem was awful
edit: i feel bad because the poet is a very nice lady!! but i think it kind of left the entire audience going 'huh' for the next five minutes.
edit2: i read the transcript and it was much nicer on paper. much much nicer.
-

Though poorly worded, I understand what he's trying to say. Obama didn't grow up in the typical American black culture. Sure his dad was straight out of Africa, but he made it here because he was the top of his class. I'm not sure how exactly Obama grew up, but he had a pretty elite schooling.
What McGruder means to say, I think, is that this is a step, but not as big a step as some would like you to imagine. Obama started out miles ahead of today's average African-American, even though the average black person overlooks this fact. Some people are saying... hey, black people finally made it, now they're on equal ground with white folk... when this is not necessarily the case. A lot of them still grow up in a culture of poverty, crime, and miseducation compared to the rest of the population.
-
then it's not a matter of race but of class.
-
i'm not accusing him of racism i'm accusing him of being dumb. he always carries himself as this supremely knowledgeable "in the know" political advocate and then just says something that i'd expect jessie jackson or a black panther to blurt out.
Are you suggesting that the Black Panther Party weren't "in the know"?
-
Are you suggesting that the Black Panther Party weren't "in the know"?
I'm suggesting that the fucking BLACK MAN in America still socially segregates itself. There are dark skinned people who think we are black and dark skinned people who think we are African-American and they bicker about things like heritage and social standing because no two black people can agree on anything. Ever.
Officially, if you are born in America you are American. If you are born in Africa, you are African. If you come from Africa to America, you are African American. There is a literal schism in "black culture" (I put this in quotes because I use it tentatively) because we literally don't know how to define ourselves. Calling a Colombian a Brazilian will likely start a fight even though they are from the same continent and border and each other.
BUT
Calling a native black American black OR African American is still socially acceptable EVEN THOUGH the person in question could probably trace their roots and find at least 3 generations of their family has also been born in America.
So some black people call themselves Black Americans while others find BLACK to be a pejorative offshoot of NEGRO/COLORED/NIGGER and embrace African-American despite not being African. The whole problem strings from the fact that there is no common ground for which the modern black man can stand on. IN A FLOWERY WORLD the correct term for a person born in United States should be based on their individual state of origin regardless of nationality but this isn't the case because Humans naturally need an identity they can connect with that separates them from everyone else. Far be it for me, Mr. Uppercrust Highborn, to associate myself with the filthy interbreeding mutts of the common North American!
But this isn't reality. In reality, if you are black you are black. If I was an immigrant from Africa, I would check mark the black box when getting a license at the DMV; the same as the guy who's great great great great great great great grandparents where African slaves. There are so very few black heroes this generation and all of the upstanding ones seemed to die out after the 60s. Jessie Jackson is crazy and no liberal black person wants to associate with him. Most rappers are either politically inept, socially inept, give a bad message or all of the above. Black politicians are few and because politics are still supremely white, the whole "heritage" aspect is gone.
This is a milestone for the BLACK AMERICAN. McGruder is cheapening it. Rather than uniting every person in America born with a drop of African blood (which makes you black no matter how you argue it) we continue to segregate ourselves because "well, this guy's family came here from Batswana in the 80s so he's African-American... but not black but but but this kid who robs liquor stores and wastes his life is the descendant of slaves so he must be true black!"
Obama is the first black person that I can safely call a "hero" in my generation on the same level that MLK was to my parents (Jesus Christ civil rights was 50 years ago). I don't expect him to lead pride rallies down the street with a fist in the air but the very fact that he is black and he is president means that the non-black side of America has learned to cope. What's the deal with black America?
-
I get what you're saying and I'm not disagreeing with you, but I mean the Black Panther Party for Self Defense didn't really 'blurt out' any of that nonsense that McGruder is talking about. If anything they did a lot to unite and organize black communities.
You're right about jesse jackson though, that guy still hasn't learned when to just keep his mouth shut sometimes(i.e. "cut his nuts out","hymietown",etc.) But Obama on the same level as MLK??? Really?
I get where McGruder is coming from though, but there are a million better ways he could have articulated himself. There's a bit of a serious problem with the left, specifically among prominent or outspoken figures, on how to relate to the whole OBAMAMANIA phenomenon. I think there's a lot of bitterness about it too because the democratic party and the billion-dollar Obama PR campaign kinda swooped in at a time when there was pretty fertile ground for political organizing and effectively marginalized every issue or position outside of the pretty narrow limits of the presidential platform debates. Others have become more recently disillusioned with the man because of his administration selections and feel betrayed because they don't see the promised change. So what a lot of people like McGruder do is lash out on Obama's character, 'racial status', or whatever without taking into consideration things like the fact that a black man becoming president is a very big deal. Ultimately what they end up doing is undermining themselves and their positions in the eyes of everyone else.
-
In his speech, Obama said "Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath." Wasn't it actually forty-three, since Grover Cleveland had non-consecutive terms?
I'm just nitpicking, it doesn't matter, but how did nobody catch this? Or is there another explanation?
-
Yes the explanation for that is that the second grover cleveland was actually a clone injected with cylon blood that hiro nakamura had replaced the real grover cleveland with. The real grove cleveland was trapped in the time of the dinosaurs
-
time to take a toke of that hope bong

What difference does that make?
There have been 44 Presidents of the United States so far. 44 people who have taken the oath.
-
There have been 44 Presidents of the United States so far. 43 people who have taken the oath.
fixed. now you should get what he is saying.
-
he could have meant jefferson davis
-
No, I don't get what he's saying at all. Why would he have not taken the oath just because his terms were non consecutive?
Jefferson Davis was never President of the United States.
...
There have been 44 Presidents of the United States. Each one of them took the oath of office.
-
But he was the same person, meaning only 43 different Americans. But he was the same person, meaning only 43 different Americans. By your logic, there are 56 Americans who have taken the oath.
-
Uh no, dude.
There have been 44 presidents. Clinton was 42, Bush jr was 43 and Obama is 44. Each one of them has taken the oath of office. The ones who have won 2 terms took it twice.
unless i am completely missing something here.
edit: Wait I see what you're saying. I'm sorry. I just never realized they counted Cleaveland twice until now. so yeah, 43 presidents, 44 presidencies.
-
Jefferson Davis was never President of the United States.
i was joking
-
all of this is pretty insignificant but obama's first day has been pretty cool. restrictions on lobbying is always good and the cap on white house salaries is a pretty symbolic thing but hey LEAD BY EXAMPLE right?
just so far everything he has said has been pretty good. talking about transparency, all that stuff.
-
Talk is cheap Mr. Obama. Lets see some of that change you promised me!
-

Heh, he's closing down Guantanamo!
While this is old news, the orders for my last year in the Navy where going to be at Guantanamo.
The last thing I want to be doing with the last 365 days of freedom is filing paperwork at a foreign detention camp in the middle of the gulf. With those orders canceled I'll be extending on my current ship which is headed to Guam this summer.
-
Speaking of Obama, What did you think about his admission that he screwed up (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/090204/usa/us_politics_economy_obama_20)?
I never liked tom anyway, he was a bad pick from the start, but to see obama publically and so nonchalantly just say "i screwed up" was really cool. Not that he needed any more humanizing but he was really quick to fess up to his mistake and do so in a way that really made him seem personable.
-
one of the first things obama did was revoke executive order 13-whatever which bush enacted to give him total control over legislative documents of former incumbents and vice presidents.
a lot of politicians think bringing themselves down to our level is a sign of weakness but i'm certain all of our parents/parental figures have said at one point that doing the right thing is always the hardest.

He really didn't have to say it. If I recall, not long ago, the former broke the world.
As for being 44 presidents in the US, I noticed that and it would be nitpicking if they posted a fun fact at the bottom of the screen saying there are actually 43 presidents total.

man my mom tried to convince me that obama made that mistake during the inauguration so that he could take the oath of office again without a bible. as if it would be such a horrendous thing to have a president that isnt a christian oh nooooooooo
-
well he is a muslim..
-
my favorite part is how my mom thinks he is secretly in league with al qaeda and that he is going to bring america crashing down from within
buuuuuuuuuuuut oh wait hes an apostate according to muslim jurisprudence ho ho howhattts that sharia law I aint never even heard of that shit

My mom thinks he's the anti-christ (so do a lot of Christian groups). It was said that the anti-christ would be a good speaker and great at rallying people together in times of trouble. The anti-christ would make people cry just by talking. I don't like that about her, but she's my mom. She voted for Hillary Clinton. She lost and she's bitter.
-
oh my god dont even get me started on the anti-christ diatribe
theres no way to counter that argument because everything they say will be HAVE YOU READ REVELATIONS DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT THIS THAT THIS ANTICHRIST BARACK OBAMA LOOK OSAMA OBAMA ONE LETTER OFF HES THE ANTICHRIST
and you just kinda stare in utter awe because its just.. man. honestly that was one of the most jarring experiences of my life the first time my mom told me she honestly believed barack obama was the anti-christ. it sent me into a thought web that took me like 2 weeks to dig myself out of
-
well I mean I can understand where the whole antichrist thing comes from. I mean, think from the perspective of a regular-ol' godfearing christian who's a little old-fashioned and doesn't have the level of media exposure that later generations do. I mean, honestly the level of adoration this guy is getting from the media and people is pretty intimidating if you don't know a whole lot about it. I mean I've seen MURALS of the guy on walls and people's garage doors and he's only a month-deep in the presidency.
A simpler mind might interpret all that as an antichrist figure, especially if they're really into the bible
-
well obviously
but the fact that shes been telling me I'm going to go to hell for voting for barack obama is a little more disturbing. I mean sure if it was some random lady on the street saying that to me I wouldnt give a shit but this is my mother. The woman who all my life until about 4 years ago always told me 'be more open minded' and 'try to understand how other people feel and think' etc etc and now because she started going to a protestant church when I was in high school she has turned into a nutjob
-
wash cycle i wanna hear more stories about your mom. we can be in the "crazy religious parents" circle (well... line)
-
she thinks that barack obama reaching out to the muslim world is a sign that he is hell-bent on the destruction of america and that america is the promised land and that god hates brown people and they are all going to hell and because I study brown people and learn their languages I'm going to hell too. obviously she didnt use those exact terms but man oh man does she love to throw around the words pagan, heathen, blasphemer and infidel
I tried to tell her last weekend how stupid and close minded the things that she says are and that she is a hypocrite because she raised me to be open minded and what not and now she has come full circle. she didnt understand what I was getting at so I explained some things to her as well as giving her a history lesson about why much of the middle east has been really angry at america for the last 50 years and then I got her to admit that she doesnt operate on facts, reason or logic and that the only thing that is important to study is the bible
she is like a goddamn wahhabist christian or something I dont even know what her deal is. she also told me that the worst decision of her life was voting for jimmy carter and that she thought that satan made her do it

I'd join the circle but, mine are just plain horrible racists(like most brits...)...though they're athiest. I miss the criteria :(

Mostly the same here with my parents.
Like they'll occasionally pull out random biblespeak just to justify some of the conservative shit they spew but they haven't been to church or cracked a bible in years and everybody knows it
Some people are just happier when they have something to hate. If there's a CLEAR ENEMY that they can FOCUS THEIR HATRED ON so that they forget/don't realize their own lives are miserable, they end up joining various social groups that propagate that belief system (in this case right wing christianity) simply out of comfort.

while I think there is certainly more to this conundrum than that, it sure as shit seems like what you said is true sometimes
