I don't know what you're looking for at all but just as general recs:
The Geraldine Fibbers are really good, I guess they are alternative rock with punk and country influences except a lot better than that sounds. Check out 'Lost Somewhere Between The Earth And My Home'.
Brainiac are a pretty strange postpunk band who are also weirdly catchy and don't have the sense of dourness that makes so much postpunk kind of a chore to listen to. Download 'Bonsai Superstar', it rules.
Matthew Sweet is mostly kinda gay powerpop stuff but his album 'Girlfriend' was pretty great, iirc you are into guitar stuff so it's worth listening to if only to hear Robert Quine's playing since he is really underrated.
Also the Dream Syndicate live album 'Live At Raji's' is really good punky Crazy Horse stuff, give that a shot.

Well I Hope This Helps  â€‹ :) :)

seriously man i give everyone shit for this and then you do it again! this topic is so damn VAGUE. why not say what punk groups you enjoy? someone who likes Bikini Kill might like Crass. someone who likes Black Flag will probably like Minor Threat. someone who likes [catamites] might like [morecatamites]! and then ALT and then JUST ABOUT ANYTHING (NO RAP).

dont do this! tell us what you like so we can make an ACTUAL RECOMMENDATION instead of Pitchfork's 500 Best Tracks.

Try the newest Good Charlotte album, it's alot gritter and more hardcore sounding than their others. You can definately hear that they are paying tribute to their underground influences.

Alright, since in the first post you didn't list anything, I'll give you some recs of bands I really enjoy that I think other people can enjoy.

Amesoeurs: This is a french "metal" band from Neige, the guy that did Alcest and a member of the cult black metal band Peste Noire. Think of new wave mixed with just a little bit of metal and Amesoeurs is what you get. The songs are all in french and sung by a woman that has a beautiful voice. They only have one MCD and a split out so far but their album is currently being recorded. Sadly, it's going to be their only album.

Anathema: They started off as death/doom metal but their second album, The Silent Enigma, hinted at something much bigger. Eventually they would become an atmospheric rock band. Once again, this is a pretty unique band except for their album Serenades which is simple death/doom. Their earlier stuff has more metal influence up until Eternity which has no metal influence but it's still a rather "heavy" album, to be honest it's frickin' depressing. Their newer stuff is much cleaner and atmospheric. Recommended albums: Eternity, A Natural Disaster

Antimatter: Really good atmospheric rock with some electronic influence. The band was created by an ex-member of Anathema. The music is really really beautiful. Recommended album: Leaving Eden, Saviour

The Cure: one of the very big goth rock bands from the eighties. Their sound varied greatly during their 20+ year career that's still going on. Recommended albums: Pornography, Disintegration, Bloodflowers

Fields of the Nephilim: Carl McCoy's band. They were another popular gothic rock band during the 80's. For some reason they never really attained as much popularity as the other bands. Their sound is much darker and they even have a metal album under the monicker The Nefilim. Recommended albums: The Nephilim, Mourning Sun

Lacrimosa: Beautiful gothic rock / darkwave. The older stuff (especially Angst) is much more minimalist and darkwave than their newer stuff. Basically think of goth rock mixed with classical music. I really don't know how to describe them... At a certain point in their career they also had some metal influence. Recommended albums: Stille, Lichtgestalt

harry tbh you still love tool apparently and on the scale of GAY BANDS i would place tool pretty closely to incubus in how lame i think they are, so I do not think you have much room to AHAHAHAHAHA here.  i would even say I dislike them more because a) laughably pretentious and b) samey as fuck.  Incubus is kinda dumb but they're higher up on the list of MAINSTREAM BANDS and generally a step above the rest I think, plus even they are a bit more varied in their sound/songwriting than tool.

I actually like incubus alot and I didn't even bother reading all of that because I think you got the wrong idea from it. its pretty funny that ryan specifically said  NOTHING OBVIOUS and Incubus is one of the most obvious bands that you could probably think of that most everyone has heard.

Have you heard Radiohead? They're basically electronic music, really good stuff. Check out Creep and My Iron Lung (a song about polio sufferers who were placed in an iron lung).

If you want more indie and less well known stuff, try Beck. And in a similar vein, Fall Out Boy are  a small but amazing band - full of energy and they put on great shows. I recommend it if you can catch them.

And I just can't leave out Depeche Mode - the paragon of indie rock! Also a great live band - they often play covers of The Bravery (another one you should check out!)

took aren't terrible as such, they're just really boring. But isn't the point of their music that their target audience are too stoned out of their head to notice/care and like the sleepy mashing together of sounds, yet somehow they got hooked up as some nerd band because once in the early 90's they were for a very short time obscure.

Well Alcest is already a side project. Neige is mostly in Peste Noire (which is his worst band imo). His other band is Amesoeurs.
Title: recommend me some music
Post by: Quest-Master on January 20, 2009, 05:08:09 am
Yeah, Amesoeurs is a side-project of Neige's apart from Alcest but I'd say they are quite dissimilar. Besides the first 2 EPs I wouldn't even call Alcest metal, and if its the sound of Souvenirs that you dig most I would recommend staying far away from Amesoeurs! It's a lot more TRADITIONAL black metal than Alcest's fusion of shoegaze and black metal-styled percussion.

coincidentally i downloaded one alcest and one peste noire album today.

what the uploader of the album stated re: peste noir

Quote from: re: peste noir
I don't expect anyone to download the last one. Maybe one or two of you. It's straight up black metal involving a couple of people from the bands above. Raw and filthy, but technically adept and with a certain element of beauty and emotion. In the words of the band's leader, Valfunde, "searching for a divine ray of light in a cesspool, under feces and refuse, such is Peste Noire's musical mission." A struggle to find illumination "between scatology and eschatology." It's a fucking masterpiece, in my opinion. One of my favorite records.
what a fucking quote!!! i haven't listened to it yet though.
how intense!

also, coxswain recommended the black angels, who rule. i happen to love psychedelic rock but here's the thing: all psych rock bands are fucking dumb. they are all the same and have bad lyrics and the same retarded style and the black angels are no exception. but they're still great. if you are into that kind of thing.

Try Wolves in the Throne Room. They've nailed a good "atmospheric" black metal sound pretty well I think, especially on their latest album Two Hunters. I will warn you that unlike Alcest's last album there are traditional black metal vox on this. They are are not too high and in-your-face in the mix though like other bands. The band's work as a whole sounds quite polished and refined too, none of that shitty kvlt lo-fi black metal production work to be heard.

There isn't really another band like Alcest but you might like Jesu.

Wolves in the Throne Room are actually black metal, Alcest isn't. So unless Afura likes some black metal he won't dig WTR. I preferred Diadem of the 12 Stars to be honest.

About Peste Noire, I liked one of their albums but I can't remember the name. It sound rather weird and at first you think "jeez, what the hell are they playing" but it gets better. I wasn't that impressed with them though. Black metal is a genre that only has a few good bands even though it's huge. Most bands are just clones of others and miss the whole point. It's kinda sad to be honest. Other black metal bands to check out: Drudkh, Forgotten Tomb, Kauan, Lunar Aurora, Raventale, Shining, Wyrd and there's a few more.

Flowerpower... way to go doing useless posts. So what, you don't like black metal, fine. He asked for some recommendations and I'm giving some. You don't want to check them out, don't and stop whining.

Anyways, Amesoeurs recently announced that the album should be out in march/april.

Also, if you don't know them you could check out Pure Reason Revolution. I was expecting crap but I actually liked them (in small doses though). Another great band I discovered is Shamrain. It's soft rock type thing but with really beautiful music. Kinda like Antimatter in that sense but the music is completely different between both bands.

I have been listening to that japanese band chef found a lot lately: Ginbae. they are pretty good and their youtube videos are hilarious

I would highly recommend along with this world fusion group called Zaman 8. They did an album with Hafez Modir this year and it is pretty awesome.

Mmm Do you like old RHCP or the new albums? Cause I've added some bands
that resemble their older stuff... don't know where you're from (since
some of these are probably well-known in the US), but here goes:
Mr Bungle (first album) (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=nx9oaA1A50M), Primus (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=bqIXaRCUN9Q), Infectious Grooves (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=_7-0yatN1gc)

Here's some swedish punk-rock (or whatever you wanna call it):
Hellacopters (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=io49sQnk1wU&feature=related), Hardcore Superstar (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=cAp-MmGsF3c&feature=related)

The Eels are more weird-pop kind of music. Posted some songs since they like to
change styles here and there (but you kinda hear it's them thanks to their choice of
chords) The third song was hard to find so there are people shooting in the video lol:
Eels - Novacaine for the Soul (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=6nBOROExwE0), Eels - Grace Kelly Blues (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=ic4GxqPLUUI), Eels - That's not Really Funny (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=X5APWEZ26bY)

Also, here are some "less known" stuff I enjoy listening to that I don't have any idea if you'll like or hate:
Duke Special (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPKEIZ7wm2o), Anna Ternheim (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=-R1S0InTnWo), UFO (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ1KW1Za3ss), The Zutons (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=kga8o6l2R-4), The Coral (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=KRy8N1P1EUI), Jesus Christ Superstar Album (old version) (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=H3vtAjHvhHA)

I don't like the internet, since you guys probably heard every band in the world anyways, so it's kinda hard to
find something "not known" unless it's from your hometown and they've just released an album lol.

And dude.. I hope you don't like THESE (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=4_KFebLWpY0) guys for their videos cause that's like the gayiest thing I've ever seen.

Is this the place to ask for music recommendations? I know we had a megathread awhile back but I don't know what happened to it.

Maybe someone in passing could rec. me something... I don't intend to hijack Ryan's topic. I've been listening to this prog rock band called Demians. I'm normally not a huge prog rock fan (I'm usually turned off as I find it generally kind of boring and long-winded) but Demians adds a metal twist here and there... they also have a very definite symphonic sound which gives their songs some serious scope.

The Coral, Zutons

I like these but I reaaally doubt that ryan would enjoy these.

I seriously don't see the big deal about Demians. The debut album is pretty good and it sounds great but the songwriting could be so much better. I do think Demians has lots of potential though. And also, it's a solo project, not a band.

Anyway, try Sylvan, it's probably the closest you are going to get. I'd suggest Porcupine Tree, Pure Reason Revolution, dredg, Pineapple Thief etc. but they don't really sound that much alike it's just that they all share lots of fans so the people who like Demians are into those other bands as well.

EDIT: Oh yeah, check out Sinew too.

also you should try typing the name of an artist you like in last.fm's radio player thingy you can download, it gives you related music. awesome for finding new bands!

bonehead i took the liberty of pointing out the problems in your post.

The Eels are more weird-pop kind of music. Posted some songs since they like to
change styles here and there (but you kinda hear it's them thanks to their choice of
chords) The third song was hard to find so there are people shooting in the video lol:

1. "The Eels"
2. weird-pop kind of music
3. they
4. change styles

Also, here are some "less known" stuff I enjoy listening to that I don't have any idea if you'll like or hate:
Duke Special (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPKEIZ7wm2o), Anna Ternheim (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=-R1S0InTnWo), UFO (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ1KW1Za3ss), The Zutons (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=kga8o6l2R-4), The Coral (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=KRy8N1P1EUI), Jesus Christ Superstar Album (old version) (http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=H3vtAjHvhHA)

1. less known: The Coral, The Zutons

In Conclusion: don't talk about music anymore

Yell at me?! for what

I got some lists right here....

Nas, K-OS, Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Outkast, Jeru the Damaja, De La Soul, Jedi Mind Tricks, Sage Francis, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Aesop Rock, Das EFX, Gang Starr, Common, Mos Def, The Roots, dead prez, Big L, Tupac, Deltron 3030, EPMD, Wu-Tang Clan & any of their solo albums (GZA, RZA, Ghostface, Raekwon, Ol' Dirty Bastard, etc).

there's enough material in there to last you a while. if you don't know where to start and just want to know some good albums then try:

Nas - Illmatic
K-OS - Joyful Rebellion
Rakim - The 18th Letter
RZA - Bobby Digital
GZA - Liquid Swords
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II Tha Pharcyde
Outkast - Aquemini
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Jeru the Damaja - Wrath of the Math
The Roots - Phrenology
Notorious BIG - Ready to Die

also thanks for this. i've definitely heard of most of these and have quite a few of these (still have to listen more ...). i asked someone in september who lives on my floor for recommendations because he listens to hip-hop 24/7 and i was way more clueless back then and he just said "NWA is all you need man" .... ):

A concept album about rap battling mechs in outer space...

yeah here's some electronic that's not DAFT PUNK or MASSIVE ATTACK

I'll probably think of some more stuff like hopefully some slower music but I'd need to think about it also any IDM made in America is like fucking horrible including my stuff

also I haven't listened to either in quite some time but The Chemical Brothers are infinitely better than The Crystal Method. They seriously sound like The Chemical Brothers as elevator music lol only reason anybody knows them is because they have a name that makes people lol and their music is in 3 FAST 3 FURIOUS kind of movies

Cylob/Kinesthesia seems like really dorky but probably should look into him I don't know if it's really possible to find his music (he's some guy on Aphex Twin's record label)

the action-packed mentalist brings you the motherfucking jams

Also I don't know Justice other than people on GW what are your channels for finding music

like is it just that he's in CAR COMMERCIALS all the electronic music you guys know is car commercial music it's so corporate man

Edit: yeah this track is like kid 606 in that it's like every rave song in a blender

no autechre makes song and then aphex twin makes fun of it

I don't think you understand

like it's basically the electronica equivalent of when rappers diss each other (is it still called that or is that like from the 1980s oh god)

I think the idea of the song is Autechre doesn't get laid but I can't prove this yet

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae artwork by designers republic

Edit: I don't really know if it's really poking fun at AE but like random people on the internet have proven Aphex Twin posts as such and such on the internet giving inflated reviews to his stuff and making fun of other IDM guys

yeah justice is HUGE right now. everybody knows them, even the mainstream community (around here anyway).

also, kid606 is pretty sweet. i just downloaded a xiu xiu remix/covers album and it has all these artists like DEVANDRA BANHART and KID606 performing xiu xiu songs and it's hilarious.

I don't pay attention to the hot/popular music at the time that's why I have brief flickers of happiness at times

But yeah out of both the distorted Aphex face videos by Chris Cunningham Windowlicker is the better one. Come to Daddy makes me worry some stupid kids are going to run around like those 4chan guys who dressed up as V but instead with aphex masks on and bothering random people. Windowlicker is even 1000x creepier really and intro + umbrella stuff is awesome

Edit: Justice sounds exactly like Daft Punk without the fun/humor

IDM is the most pretentious genre ever

but yeah I was agreeing with you, anything that's IDM and halfway decent is also some other genre like ambient (Boards of Canada is definitely ambient) or jungle or house etc. the only stuff that maybe is too abstract to be called IDM is like the American stuff that isn't worth listening to either

seriously I listened to this guy called PROEM who is supposed to be one of the best modern IDM artists and clicked on his top song and I almost died seriously it wasn't enjoyable at all

Even the new guys on Warp Records don't seem very good like this guy named CLARK who is definitely better but only in the sense of I could listen to the whole thing if I had to

Also if it's not emo futuremusic it doesn't get called IDM any more The Knife should definitely be IDM imo

i don't even know what IDM is anymore. is it shit like venetian snares (which are only ever good when you're high/tripping) or what? everytime i go to blogs i see shit listed as "IDM" even if its nothing like venetian snares/the flashbulb or whatever. is jon hopkins, the london apartments (kind of obscure, but check them out), !!!, the rapture IDM?? Is it just GKBHDSGJKFHDBFGELECTRONIC NOISE or is it dance music with "intelligent" lyrics or?

I'm pretty sure it was a term to separate like more sophisticated/experimental stuff than the usual house music or whatever was around at the time that maybe you can't dance to but it's supposed to be worth listening to

like I guess early Aphex Twin could be considered house but if you just said he did house music people would get a very different idea of it

oh ok Bjork is considered IDM too but I think Royksopp/The Knife should be considered IDM too so it's a really really arbitrary label

also Flashbulb is pretty awful I'll probably get over Venetian Snares but he was like the most exciting thing to come out of that area of music in a while. He's supposed to be breakcore I don't know where the IDM bit came from maybe because he messes around with time signatures a lot and he's noisy

Sorry if I seem obsessed with Aphex Twin it's just that half these guys are trying to ride his coattails anyway and really every IDM song you hear now is probably an Aphex Twin song that was done 1000x better by Aphex Twin

Radiohead might be IDM in any case Thom Yorke really really likes it right

Edit: Wikipedia listed Radiohead as "experimental rock" they should've just called IDM EDM for Experimental Dance Music (although lots of people use EDM for Electronic Dance Music already?) this would be a much better name imo because you can't really deny that it's experimental

I can see the knife and possibly even royksopp being IDM, but how in the world are bjork and radiohead anything even close to dance?

well it's not that but Radiohead likes people like Autechre a lot, so they definitely influence their later music

I don't know how Bjork is IDM possibly because every IDM fan secretly wants to marry Bjork. Also Bjork works with the members of LFO (Low Frequency Oscillation not those other guys) who are like the first IDM guys - they might've even had the first Warp Records record

Edit: Yeah I mean look up 'artists on Warp Records' and basically everyone who pops up is remotely enjoyable although Richard Devine is pretty fucking bad too

seriously every guy I've heard somebody enjoying on here like Squarepusher and Boards of Canada was on Warp Records at some point I think IDM might've even meant 'people on Warp Records' when it first started

Edit: Ok there's a lot of gay indie bands on Warp Records now, but like anyone who was on Warp Records prior to 1997 was decent (lol including Autechre with regard to themselves)

Edit: Seriously I picked 1997 at random but 1998 is the year Autechre turned shitty

Edit: 1997 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXSG7CDmemM

1998 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbHp24SAkb8&feature=related

wtf happened there

Edit: I really need to look up Kid 606 more/pirate some albums. I actually found an album of his in the CD bin at the college radio station but I don't think it's supposed to be his best one

but yeah like half the tracks on that album are called like SLAMMIN' RAGGA BOOTLEG TRACK and I think when I do like Venetian Snares they're always sample-heavy sort of stuff like that

Edit: Like Hand Throw and Epidermis are pretty enjoyable

Ok I'll admit I like this Squarepusher song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnZVY7ksMr0

and this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUBPH6vp5Uo&feature=related

it's just that I got one album of his from a Best Buy or something (Hello Everything I think) and it was awful bland stuff

it's still like such EASY music I mean technically it's probably ridiculous but it's like every song of his could be used in a video game menu. Even when Aphex is totally crap every song of his feels like its own idea. Some of u-Ziq's stuff can be downright depressing in the right mood imo which I think takes some guts or whatever. Like that Goodbye song reminds me of how Earthbound had some really sad songs even though they were just as weird/quirky/trippy as the other tracks

other u-Ziq song I wouldn't have heard if not for youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObXYe_SNbLU&feature=related

man I second the whole Earthbound thing with this song

his new album is like really dark dubstep stuff but he has some songs on his Myspace that are supposed to be the reject tracks but I think they're actually a lot better, even though they're depressing they still make sense given his earlier stuff and I dunno just seem more complete

but yeah with the album every song is like Woozy 2 except Woozy 2's pretty happy compared to the album. It's still pretty gutsy music to make it would make people like Proem wet their pants imo

Edit: http://www.last.fm/music/Venetian+Snares/Huge+Chrome+Cylinder+Box+Unfolding <-- if anybody cares this whole Venetian Snares album is probably worth listening to. It's like Autechre but good. Not all the tracks are great but Bonivital, Vida, Li2CO3, Keek, Nineteen1319, and Chlorophyll are good to start. Some people really like Ion Divvy and Destroy Glass Castles but I dunno Destroy Glass Castles like isn't even music by that point

apparently all the songs are in bizarre time signatures like 457/4
