Has anyone heard of this show? I just watched two episodes of it on adult swim (Maths and Water) but I honestly don't remember the last time I laughed so much. It actually brought me to tears.

It is a short comedy show originally on BBC that spoofs British educational videos.

Quote
In the first series, the episodes both satirised and paid homage to 1970s and early 1980s educational films and schools programmes, with a different scientific subject being discussed in each episode, or "module" as they are called in the series.

Maths:

These are the only two episodes that Ive seen, but I'm searching for the rest of them right now. I haven't seen the second season (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/lookaroundyou/) is like, but from what I've read it is a different format.

You know, I feel like I've heard about this and maybe even seen it once but if I have I don't remember it.  Either way, I'll definitely give it a look!

Yes, it's brilliant. Much love. Also, this is the best Peter Serafinowicz I have ever seen (from his show, the aptly named Peter Serafinowicz Show):

aaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha!

I saw this topic yesterday and was like WHATS HE ON ABOUT but then later watched the same two episodes of it on Adult Swim that you saw and it was really funny!  I liked it a lot.  The boiling egg part, man; my brother and I were dying.

Just downloaded and watched the first series. These guys are incredible. Reminds me a bit of certain segments of the Tim & Eric show, except this is a lot more subtle and scientific. Sulphur was my favorite.

man I did not laugh at either of these to the degree you guys are talking about. the second also seemed way funnier than the first but that's probably because it was more Tim and Eric than the first.

british comedy basically

it's not meant to be anything like what tim and eric do really

i think he makes an appearance. peter serafinowicz is the roommate from shaun of the dead (he also appears in spaced)

nah that part with the THANTS/BLANTS and the guy being constantly burned is a little tim and eric. this is not surprising as tim and eric is 90% parody!

tim and eric would totally draw it out and try and add their trademark surrealism

in look around you most of the jokes like that are really quick and you can often miss some of them if you're not paying attention. ie. "april the 4th of september" in maths. even when theyre obvious they never dwell on it and continue on as if nothing ever happened.

well there's already a bit of surrealism but w/e point taken there is no STRETCHED OUT stuff I guess.

still I wonder if I am HUMOR RETARDED because idk I never really laughed let alone bust a gut and everyone else is clearly gushing over it! maybe this is my 30 Rock...

also your vid isn't available in the US.

i liked black books though and i've seen the obvious classics and i get the humor its just when panda says MY BRO AND I WERE LOSING IT or ASE says I NEVER STOPPED LAUGHING idk.

like this clip you posted i find a lot funnier than the ones ASE posted probably because im a big gay babby and i like whats going on here. did i ox you...

in a related note this is one of gw's favorite animes I found this while looking for this show on adultswim's site: http://www.adultswim.com/americaloveslists/cg_sexmoments/index.html

british comedys are really good but they love their laugh tracks. i'm pretty sure black books had one and so did father ted, but tim and eric have a foley artist that used to work for nickelodeon or something

also i'm not sure how many people have seen/heard of it i think it's big in britain, peep show. it's fantastic.

IT TRULY IS AMAZING.

On a seperate note, I'm not sure how many people have seen Brasseye, but THIS is what makes my life worth living. I love it.

To sum up this topic:
Peep Show is the greatest. Brasseye is the greatest. Spaced (and Simon Pegg/Nick Frost) is the greatest. Peter Serafinowicz is the greatest. The Day Today is the greatest. HOORAY FOR THE COMEDY OF MY NATION.

I think black books and father ted are awful though  (except I have a fan who is exactly like Dylan Moran only welsh)

Haha, I'd forgotten about Look Around You. It's fantastic! And Peep Show is just the greatest, agreed.

I.T. Crowd anyone? It'll remind you a lot of Black Books (unsociable irish guy, generally 'straight man' woman, 'freak'... though Moss and Manny aren't really comparable), and maybe Father Ted as it was also written by Graham Linehan. It has a laughter track and isn't too subtle and obviously isn't all about geek stuff or else it wouldn't be as successful, but it's still very, very funny stuff at times. Also it has Chris Morris in Series 1, Brasseye fans.

seriously tho I'm with pidge and I don't really like 30 rock. I know I said I did but that one was a lie too, I think it's OK. definitely not the funniest show on tv

I've only watched the ones ASE posted so far. they were ok, I laughed at some parts like n^2 + 9 + 9 and april of september or whatever it was. it's kinda funny, I get the parody and the absurdism but my sides aint split!! I think I laughed more at this is my milwaukee and that wasn't the funniest thing ever

nonono,  I provided redundancy.
Also a +1 in the counter of people that don't find 30 rock remotely funny and cannot comprehend how somebody with such a knack at criticizing like you likes that stuff.

anyway, back on topic, I love Peter Serafinowicz. I love the one Gazzwa posted with Paul's Xmas song. Unbelievable.

i think me and my friends find this a lot funnier than most people because we're SCIENCE NERDS and all of the experiments and the little fake facts they throw at you are just so ridiculous we can't help but laugh.

also imo earl chip pointed out the not-that-funny jokes/quotes. "Water" is a lot better than "maths," I think, especially the dumb queen elizabeth stuff. I don't think every second of these clips are hilarious, but there are many scenes that are really really good!. The water and egg experiment in "Water" is definitely the best part of that episode. In "germs", the experiment where they grow stuff in a petri dish is awesome.

If you don't like this one, then :(((

edit: btw, I just noticed there's a lot of visual stuff that is hard to see in the youtube. Download the dvd rips of the episodes if you can.

I dunno now I forgot how many times I laughed at timw but I think this sort of thing is a lot more successful if you can sorta get on a roll and just have the layers of absurdity pile up until you get the CAN'T STOP LAUGHING effect ase described, it makes a good parody!! but this doesnt work when there's a stinker every few jokes. and someone, I think dom the dummy said it's good how they make a joke and move on like nothinging happened, but tbh I found it a little slow at parts like they're trying to make sure you get it. or maybe they're just trying to match the pacing of a real educational video idk.

i'll watch it ase, but I'm not making any promises.

Maths is the best thing ever. I can't help but analyze and mull over exactly how and why each joke is funny, but it doesn't take away from the humor in the least!

Why can't more nerd humor be this great?

I'm not bitching, I always liked watching out of date British educational films, there was something strangely aesthetically pleasing about them to me.  Something about the space music and faded colors just seemed really awesome to me.

Also I have seen the miracle of child birth (is that what it was called even?  i don't remember i've just seen it) sooo  :fogetcool:

haha no dude if you can't see the huge difference between british comedy and american comedy you're an idiot.

so what is british comedy and what is american comedy? is british comedy the office and american comedy friends? or is british comedy only fools and horses and american comedy arrested development? i guess british comedy stars ugly people and american comedy stars beautiful people but that doesn't really work either cos there's tim and eric a couple of fatties who puke all the time and there's plenty of love actually's and other shitty rom coms.

i take it you mean "british comedy is clever...subtle...acerbic...gallows humour..." and of course there are some british comedies which are like that, and some comedians which are like that, but there's just as much slapstick and stupid bullshit from britain, too. also, the apparently "clever" british humour is usually not that clever. like the new albumen, it's out now. that's just a pun. i didn't laugh at that it was just like "really?". monty python isn't actually CLEVER, it's usually just dumb word play or innuendo which makes me cringe sometimes with how lame it is. monty python can be really funny, but usually only when it's being absurd. like in the holy grail when they do the big dumb song which isn't funny but then at the end of it "on second thoughts let's not go to the castle, it is a silly place" and they move on. there's nothing really clever about that, and aside from a certain demeanour it's given by the english accent there's no reason that is any different from say SCRUBS when JD has a dumb fantasy and then says something when he snaps out of it. scrubs is shit though, but the idea is the same.

there's no way you can categorize british and american comedy. there's no criteria to use and making the distinction just makes you look like snobby little shithead who i'm not really interested in since the implication is always very heavily BRITISH = SMART, AMERICAN = DUMMIES!!!!

i've never seen anything as good as say tim and eric come out of britain. is tim and eric american humour? you know, satirizing a hundred different aspects of media in 10 minutes and throwing in some wacky shit for extra? or is that british. or is it just a stupid waste of time to categorize it by the country it comes from and makes you look like a bit of a dumb snob at the same time?

so "shut your gob, mate" Ya Blew It

british comedy is markedly different to american comedy and the general british sense of humour is also different

i never once said it was better. i merely said it was different and its a general fact that a lot of americans dont get british humour where britons do because of this.

Post by: Artis Leon Ivey Jr on January 20, 2009, 04:39:05 pm
yeah uh jamicus dom is right. they are markedly different and he never said anything about better, just that my dislike might stem from not liking british humor in general. like I think if you didn't grow up in a culture showing the type of TV Tim and Eric almost 1 to 1 parody, you won't really like it as much. I lived in Puerto Rico and went to India constantly and both of them had 1970s TV so it is really funny to me.

of course I said I have seen British comedy I just didn't find this as funny but beside the point!
Title: Look Around You [BBC]
Post by: jamie on January 20, 2009, 05:26:36 pm
nah i just don't see it.

i didn't say dom actually said "british humour is better", it's just that this is almost always what i hear from people. i said implication - you never hear about british people not getting american humour, they just say it's dumb or shit. i don't see what the big difficulty is on either side. the only difference i really see that is common in all comedy from certain places is like the accent and certain phrases people will use, apart from that comedians are generally pretty varied.

i didn't grow up watching loads of infomercials or cheesey talk shows etc i mean i know they exist but i think it's very easy to get what tim and eric are making fun of without having loads of experience with that stuff - and there is easily as much of that kind of tripe on british tv, too.

for the sake of an example, people say there's a difference between scottish humour and english humour - there isn't. the jokes are always the same, and they are either dumb or smart, the context might be a little different but i can't see how that would ruin the joke for you unless it was something totally alien and britain and america are pretty flipping mixed in culturally and have been for a while.

also dom i got you a little mixed up with dicko in the first post cos he does say this crap a lot. maybe snobby shithead was a bit strong! but i still think making that kind of british vs american thing is stupid and useless in describing anything, unless you mean "dumb and plays into a lot of cultural cliches" in which case just say that.

i guess when you're talking about conversions they might be trying to make a niche series more marketable but yeah it's way different

rrrmmm...okay. i guess there is some kind of use to british and american comedy. but basically it's only useful in so far as the british variety of dumb and american variety of dumb go, and even then there are imitations, but i don't think actual good comedies can be described as american or british cos usually they have a lot of unique qualities.

i shouldn't have started this, cos i got dom mixed up with i think dicko or some guy who kept saying british comedy was special or great a little while ago and it annoys me when people do that.

edit:

this was really dumb i'm sorry for doing this.
