Avian flu has fallen largely under the radar since it was the centre of widespread attention in 2005, but now it has emerged in a turkey farm in southern B.C. Examiners aren't too worried since they say that this is not really a deadly strain. However, it does raise some questions-

Some thoughts...
Personally, I find that the avian flu prescence in North America is a reminder of our need as a global player to take part and maintain our medical and preventetive standards to preserve lives around the world, and that even three years after it was seen as a major cause for concern it's stiil an extremely potent threat. If not this specific disease, then others like it. It could be a global pandemic because it's impossible to control birds and flight patterns...while it does seem to emerge mostly in domestic and non-flying birds, however, I do think it's possible for us to prevent teh disease's spread by imposing international inspection laws on all poultry.
I do not believe our international health systems are ready, as most are largely concerned with their own country, which, while effective, will ignore a good portion of the world that does not have teh same finances or medical advances to maintain their peoples' health. The result will be teh disease existing in certain parts of the world and continually spreading to otehr parts, overloading the stabler systems.
On the flipside, a global pandemic would force international leaders and palyers to consider more thoroughly the prescence of global trade, economy, prescence, and medical relations. Now, more than ever, when telecommunications and transportation bring the world closer together, we must learn to work together internationally in order to assure our own survival.

Duclinea, don't take this the wrong way but I think you might want to change your methodology and thought process of making topics. Your past 3-4 topics have all been:

Quote
News Link (http://www.calgaryherald.com/index.html)

1. Mixed bag of semi-thoughtful questions and really dumb obvious questions. HOW DO YOU FEEL
2. Mixed bag of semi-thoughtful questions and really dumb obvious questions. HOW DO YOU FEEL
3. Mixed bag of semi-thoughtful questions and really dumb obvious questions. HOW DO YOU FEEL

Your university strike topic was good! It generated a lot of discussion about student/worker rights and unions and such. But please don't force discussion questions into a topic. I'd argue it is probably 10x better for you to include a paragraph or two of your own insight/opinion on a certain topic than to list questions that people are supposed to answer.

I mean, what do you expect out of things like:
What do you think of avian flu re-appearing in North America?
IT IS BAD. I DONT LIKE ANIMALS DYING

Quote
Three years after it was majorly watched, do you still believe it is still as dangerous ?
I DONT KNOW. LETS ASK SOME SCIENTISTS

Quote
Could it be a global pandemic? Is it likely?
YES. NO.

I'm not stopping you from making topics. I just think you should try and hold off on grabbing every latest canadian news story and posting a bunch of one-sided questions (or in the case of the melamine topic: very commonly debated questions: (Why would someone think death penalty is bad???? Why would they think it is good???))

Ok sure! I was just trying to suggest some things to talk about. I can erase those ^_~.

EDIT: done! I just put in my opinion.

To be fair, I'm not trying to copy and paste every bit of Canadian news...I realized after the university strike and coalition government thread that there are a lot of canadians on GW and our news and issues don't always get addressed in most mainstream international communities, so I thought I'd take an initiative to try to talk about things which are important to Canadians but also important to others internationally. ^_^ I see your point in concern, though!

(Also forgive my style of making topics, but it's how I'm used to doing it at debating clubs, I will try others).
