Title: Legacy of Ys I & II
Post by: Whitefire on January 31, 2009, 06:54:02 am
Sorry if someone has already made a post about this.

Ok so if anyone has ever played the Pc-engine or turbo duo or even the psp Ys, they have seen this series. This game was one of my earliest RPGs and it still is the most unique one I've played to date. The one thing that caught me the most about the original was the attack system. To be Frank it was really strange, instead of mashing a button or giving a prompt command you would try to run into your enemies, this would knock them back and allow you to try again. This is nothing like any other game I've seen and that's why it stuck out over the years. I also enjoyed the story that came with this game and most importantly the epic music.

Here's a trailer to it if any of you are interested: http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/22246 (The music in this intro is pretty cool :P)

My only fear of this game is that they will ruin the unique feel of the game that was made by the combat and music (especially the music)

They are also offering pre-orders to anyone who is interested, it comes with the sound track for a reasonable price: http://www.atlus.com/ys/

I might write up a review for this game depending on the amount of people who show some interest in it.

all these remakes operate under the assumption that the internet doesn't exist

just make a new Ys anybody who cared has already emulated these

Actually, I just started caring and now I'm doubting whether to wait for this or just go emulate the original ones.

I've already emulated them on to my computer, but I want to support the company and the people who made the music for this game. This is only fair considering how much I enjoyed it.

The trailer scenes look a lot better than the star ocean 2 remake. I like the retro style music.

Look at these remakes like a "20 year anniversary" version of stuff. Sure, you can play the old ones still, but sometimes (not always) the newer versions are much better games.

The value of remakes depends on the changes.  A straight up port is no better than just emulating it for free, and even improved graphics had better be something special to be worth paying for, but something like Pokemon Fire Red where it's the same game but with improved mechanics (i.e. not having to go through a menu every single time you wanted to use your bike) and basically all the nice parts of newer games while still being the same game underneath, that's something I can understand paying for.

That anime stuff made me not watch the trailer. It seems to be the trend of remakes of old rpgs to replace all the cutscenes with animu bullshit.

Not quite sure how to quote but hobo have you ever played the original? Those anime scenes that you didn't want to watch are very similar to the original game's ones, in fact the only difference is the look. So it's not like they just threw them in there, they are remade so they are smoother and more appealing. I'm sure a ton of people would be complaining and calling altus lazy if they didn't change the opening at all.

Ah. I assumed they did what most companies do when remaking rpgs and chucked all this anime bullshit in.

don't bother.  the ys series is built on a boring and archaic system and i'm glad the recent version included the ability to actually swing a weapon.

and ys games have always been hard as balls.  i think it was wanderers of ys (the sega game) where you pretty much have to grind or die and since it still uses that stupid BUMP INTO ENEMY TO WIN combat mechanic an enemy can technically clip through you and kill you in 1 second.

The only times that I found that clipping stuff happening (which is lame, but what system doesn't have randomness to it) was when I was trying to hit a target too many times, which if you think about it, it makes sense. You can't expect to hit a target without being hit yourself...I was wondering if you ever tryed the Ys game for the Ps2 or PsP Marcus they used a different system and I found it entertaining, you think that that system is much better and well thought out?

P.S I haven't played the wanderers so it could be really bad as you say, I'm just saying from personal experience...and that's enough trolling this thread for a bit >.> (for myself)

Great, now I actually feel MORE inclined to play. Well, I'll wait for the remakes and see what happens!

oh ok so it all comes down to whether the company gives you a reason to resent them or not, whether they end up turning a profit

SQUARE AND NINTENDO YOU COULD LEARN FROM THIS

also lol reading it the controls in Ys sound like somebody's broken ABS

I just downloaded Ys I + II for the Turbografx from the Virtual Console, and I like it so far. Love the music. I pretty much enjoyed Arc of Napishtim as well, so I'll probably get this.

Yeah. I can understand that, heh. But when you combine the knocking-back thing with the increased speed setting and zip around the field... well, it's something magical when the system doesn't feel right unless you're bellowing BWAHAHAHA at the top of your lungs. Proper fucking Brian Blessed gameplay here

Gosh, do I want that pre-order soundtrack, though. Don't know if amazon.com ship to the UK, and on Playasia you don't get the CD...

Also Whitefire, I spent like the whole of this post thinking you were iishenron. Sorry.

Heh, well, maybe. But the reason is that he has the same character as you in his avatar and I just sort of saw it out of the corner of my eye when reading the posts.
