Hey wassup, just wondering if any of you guys are interested in this or are playing right now, we could get some games going. You can get the DW2 beta from Steam, it's a 5 gig download though so be prepared for some waiting. You also need a MS Live account to play, but it took like 2 minutes to make one so yeah.
For anyone who doesn't care or doesn't know, DW2 is RTS game based on Warhammer 40k where you build and control a set of squads and tanks and battle it out in somewhat differing gamemodes, the beta only has Annihilation and Victory Point modes which revolve around capturing areas of the map in order to get resources faster and/or to win.
It has 4 factions, Space Marines, Orks, Tyrannids and Eldars, which as far as appearances go, are Humans, Orcs, Zerg and Protoss, respectively. The beta apparently does not limit your selection of units and there is a lot of them on each faction so I guess it's true.
I just got this today and my first impressions are that this is a really good game. It's somewhat casual, but not really. It's casual because there is no base building or resource gathering involved and you don't have the most vast armies under your control but not really all that casual because you can develop each squadron in whatever way you like and you need to upgrade armors, weaponry and skills to squads and to your hero unit.
It's a bit on the hefty side as far as trying to run the game goes but I managed to get it to run really well after lowering some settings. But if you have a really old rig you most likely will have a great deal of trouble trying to run this.
From what I played, it was a really good and fun game. Discusz.

Yeah this game is pretty fun, I have played it a bit, I like the force commander only cuz he can become a mech O_o
about the performance, it really makes my computer feel like shit, and it doesnt even look that nice, I hate beta...s...
-
I'm excited about the co-op campaign. I never really bothered playing RTS games competitively, but the prospect of running through the campaign mode with another person really piques my interest. The game definitely looks fantastic on higher settings, and plays really well. I like that they are using the Essence engine or whatever they used in Company of Heroes, seeing your huge tank crash through barricades and stuff is nice, and I like that cover is much more important than it was in Dawn of War 1 (like Company of Heroes, units in DoW2 die really fast out of cover).
-
I can play on low setting but I am on the borderline of being a lagger. I have not lag as of yet but I am so close to lagging that if for example my antivirus starts mistriously to scan I think, not sure, I will start to lag.

Is this the one that tries to act more like the tabletop game by giving you a set amount of minerals and gas before the game to build units and not giving you buildings during the game to make more units? If so, I've been looking forward to this one.
-
yes.
-
Loved the first one, and I like the Beta for this one too.

You start with starting resources + hero and 1 squadron. You constantly receive more requisition (money) and the pace of which you gain this depends on how many requisition points you have under control. You have no other buildings than the main building from which you summon more squads + a few turrets to defend it. You can only have like 8 squads or so but you can also equip them differently. This beta at least plays like this.
So I guess this isn't what you are looking for?
-
Well, I think (THINK) singleplayer is like this. I watched a video awhile ago and the dude talking was saying something about squads being incredibly important - like each individual squad has a leader with a unique name, and you buy wargear and equipment for each squad in between missions, stressing that every soldier matters and you have a finite supply of men as opposed to being able to churn out virtually limitless troops.
Multiplayer is definitely a little more traditional, except without any real basebuilding as Laz mentioned. The game promotes mobile defense, in the sense that you don't just build 50 turrets around your base with 10 barracks churning out marine squads, but rather that you use cover and capture chokepoints in the field.
-
Basically the first person plays like one of the older Warhammer PC games.
-
it's out today, been playing singleplayer. I really like it. It's definitely a nice looking game and runs fantastic on my machine, though I heard a lot of complaints during the beta from other people. I'm not much of a multiplayer kind of guy, at least when it comes to RTS games, so the singleplayer and co-op is where I'm interested. It's pretty good in this respect. It's very fast for one thing, there is zero basebuilding/resource gathering in the singleplayer, and you're given different types of squads as part of the story. One neat thing is that you have to capture stuff in the field. Like, if you have your tactical marines equipped with grenades, they'll start with 3 at the mission beginning, but you'll have to find supply drops on the field to get more. It's definitely all about cover and supressive fire, units can get chewed up out in the open. The campaign is a mix on linear story progression and the open ended "meta campaigns" that were in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. You have options sometimes whcih missions to complete, though so far they haven't branched - like you're given choices between 2 different missions, but you still have to do both in order to proceed, you can just do them in whichever order you want. I have a feeling this will open up later, as there are THREE planets in the game and I've only been allowed access to one so far. Unlike the meta campaigns in Soulstorm/DC, there is definitely a story here. It's pretty MEH so far, just typical WARRRRRRR shit, but it's still there. It's neat that every squad leader has a name and history, and you can customize their equipment, even give them extra abilities by equpping accessories, like the ability to call in defensive turrets. You find wargear during the missions, some are just generic blasters and swords and shit but there are RARES too, which have coloured names and extra stats, just like DIABLO or a MMORPG.
Overall I am liking it. The AI could use some work, but it's a pretty polished and neat game.

Alright so it is like playing a real game of Warhammer40k (kind of) only on PC. I guess I'll pick this one up then.
-
My understanding is that it's really sort of RPG-like with missions, experience, optional grinding, money and loot, etc - not an RTS without base building. I don't really know that much about it though. IGN's PC podcast compared it heavily to a mix of Diablo and an RTS.
-
I love the campaign, its a nice change of pace for the series but I do sometimes feel it getting a bit repetitive. The multiplayer is good fun too, but wheres the Chaos? They are just as important as all 4 of the other factions in this game, maybe more important in some ways. I just hope they release the Chaos in another expansion. Still, what really ticks me off about this game is that there is practically zero mod support, which is a shame since DoW1 was so big on modding.
Edit: Oh and I kind of do miss base building, but at least they give you the option to spam units in multiplayer.

This is really awesome fyi.
Like, it actually feels like you are fighting an army once you get into the campaign. Having to choose between two key points to defend knowing you need both is kinda ass, and the time requirements for 5 "stars" is insane (I do most levels in 10 minutes, and I get 3 stars. Is it even possible to get 5 stars in everything? I could do it quicker if I didn't grind and get 5 killing-everything stars, but I want all stars :<)
But yeah, really badass game.
-
So is this worth getting? Should I drop $50 on it? I would mostly be playing multiplayer. How well is it balanced? Is there a map editor?

Its worth getting, yes you should drop 50$, no the campaign is just as engaging, its pretty balanced, and no map editor since according to relic their engine used for the game is practically unmodifiable. Thats not to say people won't find away around the anti-mod though, but it would be complicated.
-
There are only 7 maps available in multiplayer, and a somewhat lousy match making service. Relic said something about new maps down the road, as well as a chance of a map editor (a map editor, not a full construction set since Liquid Ocelot seems to be confused)

Maybe in the next few patches new ones will be added, but what I really want is too play as the chaos again. I heard that they will come in the next expansion, but I would have to wait an entire year for that so until then I guess I will just play as the chaos in DoW1. Oh and sorry for the confusion Rowain :/

I've been meaning to try an RTS out for a long time now, would this be a good game to start on?

Somewhat. First off you need to know what kind of an RTS it is and it involves no base building(you have a base in multiplayer, but only one which you can spam units out of). If you do get it, don't go online right away, play the single player to get your bearings. People can be pretty brutal online.
-
And never talk during online, seriously.

Why's that?

Well, it's this thing called micro-management, to put it simply you control many many people at once more individually then just en-mass. To properly micro-manage you have to constantly pay attention and communicating, via messages, and such will just waste time by preventing you from watching your troops.
Also alot of them are just dicks.

This is true, if you must talk to friends to coordinate strategies, just use Steam or something.
-
This game doesn't really have much micro though, because most units come in groups and are not individually controllable.
Unless I'm missing something?
-
yea there isn't all that much micro but you still need to keep your anti-tank guys in a safe spot and use cover on the groups whenever it's possible, etc.. The jetpack dudes are something you also want to use in conjunction with the other groups when they are pinned down or something like that.
The gameplay isn't super fast so even if you are not a native korean you can play this game and win.
-
Not as micro heavy as the previous WAR. But I still find most of them are not worth talking to.
-
Edit: Nevermind, I just realized my question made no sense. Well, I'm going to dive right in and give this genre a try. The only experience I have with an RTS is spore's crappy iteration of it.
If I end up hating it, well then... Oh well. I mean, it can't be a bigger waste of money than that time I bought Unreal Tournament 3.

Is it me, or does this game refuse to allow players to change keybindings? Ive been playing this for a bit, and I find it a bit hard to keep track of everything going on sometimes, though I can see myself gradually improve as I progress through the game. Nothing terribly difficult so far, despite numerous mistakes (and getting used to the ass backwards pathing RTS's seem to have a tendency toward.) I've yet to fail a mission. I'd say that this game makes a good starter RTS.
