I'd have to say (though I haven't heard all the facts) that he seems depressed and trying to find something to get him out of the slump.

yeah i definitely don't think he seems cool. whether he is ON SHIT or not is unclear i think but he's definitely not functioning on any normal level. it's just awkward. yep i love awkward people. i think i would be laughing too (and i did) because the interview itself is kind of absurd and it is funny because they are both aware of how poorly it is going

His family is apparently a bunch of musicians and he supposedly wishes to continue down that legacy.
As funny as it is I found everyone were being a bunch of dicks towards him, which if he's being serious or not, was pretty rude. Oh sure they might think it's a joke, but come on humor him a bit, get in on the joke.

I didn't think he seemed messed up that much, just pretty unhappy to be there. The second half of the interview he seemed perfectly normal and aware that Letterman was giving him shit.

my history teacher from high school told me the last time he went to New York he took his wife to see Letterman and they actually had like.. front row seats or whatever and they got there early and some guy working for the studio came up to them and was like good evening folks, how sober are you? and they were like well we havent had anything to drink today and he was like alright come with me and he took them to a private bar in the studio and got them drunk. apparently letterman has a policy that everyone in the front row must be at least a little intoxicated so they'll laugh harder at his lame ass jokes

sometimes you have to they don't just say "oh im gonna go on letterman it'll be fun lol!!" they usually have obligations. its their job to go on letterman. they are not "buddys" with letterman. really do you not know this?

What I mean is that it's just part of the territory. Going on Letterman means this is what you're dealing with, so having a bad attitude about it isn't helping anything.

i think a lot of celebrities do shit to get gossiped about just like we're doing right now. he might never admit that it's fake, but it seems like that to me.
either way i think it was kind of cruel/stupid for people to laugh the way they did. other than the mummbling at the beginning it just seemed like he was nervous or didn't want to be there or what ever...

I don't know, man. Just staring off into space for several seconds after being asked a question doesn't seem like nervousness to me. Even less so since he did it several times.

letterman wasn't being an ass btw he was just being a talk show host/trying to make the segment interesting. and I doubt there's actually anything wrong with joaquin unless he's naturally a great character even when depressed and out of it

This is a publicity stunt. Him quitting acting and becoming a rapper is part of a mockumentary Casey Affeck is filming. It will be about Joaquin Phoenix's life and music career. Right now his playing the part (Borat style).
Also, if you look at the video before it ends, he stands up, shakes Letterman's hand and takes off his glasses. I bet he's telling him what he was doing.

Even though the article says it's not a lie, I can say the same thing about Borat. Everything about him is a lie. The interaction with people were all real.

i saw some guy post something from imdb that said an audience member saw them CHATTING CORDIALLY during commercial breaks and that after the interview was over he turned to the audience and bowed so some shit, so idk.

River used to mess with the press. Like he told them that he has been part of a cult practically since birth (that part might be true, his parents seem "out there" based on what I've read) and he told a reporter that he lost his virginity when he was 4 as a result of cult practices or something.
So I think Joaquin might be doing the same thing. I also heard the hip hop thing was a farce.

Joaquin was awesome in most of the movies i've seen with him. I think he was just really high because he really didn't want to do this interview. That beard is messed but I guess thats a new look for him. Wish he would continue acting though :/

if this were not a joke, it's not so much letterman who's bring a prick, but the audience is pretty much ROARING at every little movement he does. it's sad. if he was either some kind of crack head or if he was mentally ill, this would be a very serious and sad thing... not something to laugh about- espeically when his brother essentially died from this type of thing.
i understand a host has to try to be a host, but the people were being so stupid. it wasn't nearly that funny (joking or not).

okay stewart lee recently ended his set by putting a stuffed giraffe on his head and staring for about five minutes straight. guess what happened?
people started to laugh nervously and cheered when he finally took the giraffe off. when people don't know what's going on, we assume it's for a point or funny! the audience is not JERKS and neither is Letterman for going along with what is possibly a joke.

nah, watch it again you see Joaquin take his glassess off and give him a warm hand shake and the tone of Letterman's voice suggests he was being sincere.
I'm sure Joaquin has a point to make in all this, will just have to wait for the documentary to be released. I think it'll be a really cool and funny experiment to see an actor stay in character constantly for a whole year, the documentary will be more like a movie in that respect

I've been in many situations where I've tried to be serious for a prolonged period of time. Somehow, I always end up laughing and then trying to cover it up with "something clever".
And that is exactly what Joaquin Phoenix did when he said "He's a funny guy" at the end.

yeah this would be a lot easier if it wasn't YOUTUBE and we could actually see if he was chuckling a little bit, it's hard to tell with youtube his mouth is kind of blur at that quality
also he seems pretty responsive depending on what Letterman is saying like with the gum he can do the joke with putting the gum under the table, and he makes sure to plug the whole thing where he's doing hip-hop now
but yeah I don't know I don't know much about his life/etc. but I know sometimes on late shows somebody just completely messes around with the host but I can't remember if it was ever like this
also his sunglasses seem kind of Britney Spears-esque if it is a joke possible joke right there

someone who was there in person said that during breaks he was acting pretty normal and loose with letterman and the audience, that everything on camera was a farce.
pretty lame joke, if you ask me, though. but if it is some kind of long-term character role he's trying to pull off, that's a pretty cool concept.
and letterman did a damn good job as far as interviewing a comatose guest. how can you call him a dick? it's not like he has a choice to be there either, it's his JOB. he has to make funnies about any asshole that shows up and plugs their new hit movie.

to be honest, I thought I did.
I didn't know the exact spelling so I just looked it up and whatever came out first I copied over - it turns out (i guess???) that where i copied it from was also wrong, which i honestly think wouldn't be a big deal because people would know about the concept i was referring to anyway and wouldn't wig out over something that trivial, right????

If you're going to throw around a word like schadenfreude, you can't switch two vowels that would make it be pronounced completely different in almost any language. It's not like leaving out the c.
