So I was wondering if anybody else at GW collects shit.
I'm really into buying and selling these Marvel figurines called Super Hero Squad on ebay right now, and I've gotten myself a fair few of them. I didn't really want to get into collecting something again because of the money (I had a pretty good sized collection of pokemon cards) but after I realized Hasbro likes to retire shit all the time these things started being worth more and more money. So I'm stocking up on them, and buying a few G.I. Joe versions for the months after the movie comes out.
Anybody else collect stuff? I know they're gotta be a couple transformers collectors here, I'm a beast wars man myself.
-
Scars.....I collect scars..................................................
-
I used to collect NBA cards, I still have most of them somewhere in a box. but nowadays I don't collect anything besides bills.
-
When I was young I collected a whole bunch of shit: POGS, BASKETBALL CARDS, MAGAZINES, ROCKS, OLD COINS, MODEL PLANES, COMICS etc you name it I collected it.
Now days I guess you could say I collect cds? I don't really collect anything too much, I have alot of belongings and that stuff holds you down after a while. Like makes it harder to travel or move around or whatever.
-
Oo, pogs! I had some of those too. Don't think I ever even played the game, but they were shiny.
These days I like to collect jobs & crazy ex-girlfriend stories. Hmm... I guess books too. There's tons I have I'll never read, but I buy them anyways when I see an interesting used one.
Anyone want to admit to having a beanie baby collection? I know there's gotta be a few of you here!
-
I'm not sure if pogs worked the same in america but in the Philippines while growing up, Pogs coexisted with cocacola and each bottle cap when traded in can give you a certain number of Pogs. I remember POGS oh so well, man they were the shit.
Did ya'll just buy POGS?
-
Me and my brothers used to have quite a large collection of pokemon cards when was younger. And I've only recently decided to collect Magic: the Gathering cards with one of my friends. Apart from that, I've never really had the money to just buy things because they were part of a set, or anything like that.
-
heh pokemon cards... Some people make money by selling cards they collected in their youth.
-
not anymore, I collect I dunno, CDs and that's really it. I pick up the odd Transformer still a couple of times a year if I think they're cool, and likewise with G.I. Joe. But I wouldn't really conscider myself a collector anymore since I sold most of my stuff to buy guitars/CDs.
-
Over the years I had collected a ton of things but gave up after moving out of my mums place where I left all that shit. There were buckets full of pogs, a load of pokemon cards and even a whole bunch of cats eyes... dont freak out I mean marbles.
-
as a kid I had collected pokemon cards, digimon cards yugioh, pokemon (the non battle version [the ][/the] cards, sega genesis cartridges and pogs ofcourse. Also I had a cardboard box full of lego pieces.
when I started smoking and buying packs, I collected the little warning labels that come in each cigarette pack (its like a card). at one point i had as many labels as pokemon cards (and I had A LOT of pokemon cards). it all ended when my dad found one randomly.
now I only collect movie tickets. Everytime I go to the movies I put the movie ticket in a special hidden pouch in my wallet. its the easiest and laziest thing to collect lol.
-
Pretty much just collecting neuroses, in a few years I'll have the set
-
I collect books. Used to collect Pokemon, magic the gathering and yu-gi-oh. Should probably sell those.
-
Pogs, Beast Wars, GI Joes, and.. Beanie Babiess. I have a huge garbage bag full of beanie babies (with the tags in hard plastic, so no bendage)
-
I collect baseball cards and old coins/bills.
-
I used to collect old video games. I have 14 systems & handhelds and ~300 games (not including PC games). It was a hobby for a while. I'd go to different pawn shops and try to score deals.
-
thousands and thousands of cookie jars ... my favourite is the one with an upside down wow on it
-
mostly coins, i think i have a pretty extensive collection now
-
i collect empty space. i'm always trying to think up new ways to get rid of shit. this is not a joke.
-
I guess video games is the only real collection I have. I hate getting rid of games even if I don't play them (unless they are generally awful games and recent enough to where they're not rare by any means), and I've got quite a few rare games. Not surprisingly, I collect different copies of Night Trap, but that's such a small available TARGET I guess that it's not much of a collection. I have four different copies so there are only a handful of other releases I don't own (the nice thing is that the Japanese releases are incredibly cheap on ebay, like $3-$5). I will buy any and all 3DO games I come across if I can afford them, even if they're not games I ever want to play. ESPECIALLY if they have the box and everything.
I used to collect Beanie Babies as a child, already sold off most of them. I still have a couple of them. I still occasionally buy Pokemon and Magic cards, but I don't really know why anymore. I mean, I still play Magic on occasion but I play with the same two or three decks so it's not like the extra cards are adding anything. I have a collection of WoW cards but I stopped buying them because I don't know of anyone else with them and I only wanted them to play the game anyway so it's kind of useless now.
Also I collect Derby Owners Club cards that are left behind by people who either don't know about the card reader or small children that forget to take them. I don't even know why I started to do this, it's just a habit to me now to look around the game to see if there are cards there, and there usually are some in the pockets on the side of the terminals. Most of them either have poorly typed in names of famous horses or random collections of letters typed in by little kids.
-
I used to collect Beano comics when I was younger. I only got about 70 issues in a row before I missed one and stopped.
-
I be bumpin my bass like you collect comics
I’m not weird. I’m honest
-
I think everybody used to collect the beano when they were a kid. We had hundreds.
-
What about legos guys? Got maad legos, star wars, batman, you name it!
-
I have a shitload of legos but that's not really collecting. I mean, some people do collect legos, but most kids just have/had a lot of them. Having a lot of something and collecting something are different things.
-
Whats a beano? The only Beano I know is Beano, there'll beee no gas.
-
Ever since I was young I've been obsessed with collecting something whether it be coins, pokemon cards, etc etc.
At the moment I go to the local comic store each week to pick up a few titles, I'd say I have probably 1.5k+ comics or so.
I also do comic book art, I used to get one or two commissions every once in a while, but that was way before I discovered I could get free sketches at signings and whatnot in a book - which was much more convient + free. I have a crapload in my sketch book, theme is "movie characters".
I used to do action figures, I would still like to but it's too costly. Of course I do not open them. For some reason I do not like exposing things to the world and whatnot, it disturbs me. I have them all hung on a wall.
My favorite thing to collect is, of course, autographs. I try to go to signings as much as I can, but going on 1 hour train to NYC + $17 roundtrip ticket is costly. I've only done one premiere (The Dark Knight) but I don't do those kinds of things because they come up on short notice, and also they're not guaranteed; thus wasting money. I haven't gotten an autograph in person in a long time since Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Daniel Dae Kim(Lost, and Boondock Saints Troy Duffy and Sean Patrick Flannery at NY Comic Con, so while I wait for something good to come up I started sending requests though the mail. Yeah, ttm stuff may not be legit, but I know which ones are not secretarial, preprints, or autopens.
I've built up a decent collection, I have like, Nicolas Cage, Bill Cosby, Michael Madsen, Gene Hackman, cast of TDK, Spike Lee, Hideo Kojima, Hayden Panettiere, Bruce Campbell, Kristen Bell, etc etc etc.
-
I just remembered I have a pretty sizable collection of Gundams.
-
i collect college girls in my dungeon
-
I just remembered I have a pretty sizable collection of Gundams.
I was obsessed with Gundam model kits, still have a shitload unbuilt.
-
my brother used to collect gundams until he realised they sucked and decided to paint them in Batman related colour schemes.
-

Thats even worse..
But yeah gundams were fun to build and to collect, especially the older models.
-
i love gundam model kits but i love ALL model kits, i don't really care what they are....i built a model tank recently, but i don't really have any interest in any military-type things, i just really love doing models
-
i dont understand how someone can make a topic and not even make sure the TITLE OF THE GODDAMN TOPIC (ESPECIALLY SINCE ITS ONLY ONE WORD!!!) is spelled right? its fucking bugging me, can someone change it to "Collectibles" or something jesus christ?
-
Although "collectable" is the spelling listed first for the adjective by the Oxford English Dictionary, and is standard spelling in British English, the dictionary observes that the "-ible" form is also valid, and has come to be common spelling in the United States.
but lol wiki quote
-
yeah i was going to say dude it's still proper spelling. congrats gr i spend like months trying to convince british members to stop using whilst and you go and do this.
-
what? damn. collectable just looks wrong and firefox flags it as misspelled.
-
I used to collect Star Wars figures when I was young....
The only thing that I do now that could be considered collecting is downloading paint programs...
heh I'm such a nerd
-
I mostly just collect books and experiences
I have some really amazing books though, and some really old shit too. My goal is to create a library and donate it to OSU when I die
-
i used to collect comics I have a ton of really old xmen and spiderman ones that are probably worth a lot now but those are all in my moms attic
thesedays i don't really have any collections but my wife spends a ridiculous amount of money collecting gold and silver coins from all over the world. I used to get pretty annoyed at her spending hundreds on those things, but now I guess a lot of them are worth over a G and they're pretty easy to sell so.....
-

Unless "old" means the early early issues, they're not going to fetch anything more than 10 bucks each.
-
I collect coins at the moment, but I'm looking into models and stuff, I might even start saving movie tickets. The models have always peaked my intrest though, but im not veryv good at painting them. All I really have now is some Warhammer stuff, one and a half of the 2 sets are unpainted too.
-

thats still pretty good considering they cost probably between $.50-$3 to buy.
i collected a bunch of things as a kid: beanie babies, pogs, pokemon cards, magic cards, baseball cards, etc.
nowadays i read comics but i only keep up with a few series (Batman, DMZ) and the occasional one-shot or trade paperback so not really AVID COLLECTOR
-

they were pretty old, the spiderman ones were from around the 70's

I remember I have this one
$350 ain't bad
man going through this site makes me want to go to my mom's place to get those things and sell them, I probably have over a couple grand worth of comics.
-
I still have a 40+ book collection of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine hidden away in a Voit shoebox in my closet. I've been meaning to pick up the rest of the set via ebay sometime.
Also when I get some extra dollars I'm gonna expand my conservative collection of archaic video game stuff. Right now I have a SNES with almost 20 games including the original DOOM, an original XBox with lots of dumb games plus DOOM 3, a 16-bit SEGA Genesis with NO GAMES, a SEGA CD with what I'm assuming is the first wireless controller ever made for console gaming, and a SEGA Saturn which I think only had one game released for it before Playstation hit the market and obliterated the universe.
There are lots of great SEGA CD games I'd like to pick up from eBay like Eternal Champions, Tomcat Alley, and The Masked Rider. I also used to have a Dreamcast but it sat around in a closet for almost five years and didn't work anymore so I traded it to a guy for a CD player for a car I had three years ago.
-

i'm pretty sure that i remember reading about both the atari and i think also the nes having wireless controllers, they were just useless as shit and poorly made
-
CD's and records. That's pretty much it. My Dad has an insane amount of Baseball cards. Like. A whole closet of them. Crazy.

Shit I want dat.
I doubt it'd sell for $350 unless you get it CGCed btw. I don't know how much it'd go for VF+, but probably a lot more than $20 USD.
-
I have a Zelda pocket watch that I have seen sell on eBay for $50.
Any takers?
-
How does that work? Pocketwatches were out of style before Zelda was even made...
-
i'm pretty sure that i remember reading about both the atari and i think also the nes having wireless controllers, they were just useless as shit and poorly made
i had a wireless control hub for the nes which had four controller ports and used like 4 c batteries or something. also it had to be pointed at the receiver plugged into both the controller ports in front of the nes because it worked on infrared. it was actually pretty useful for playing like monopoly and bowling and other turn based games with more than two players because it basically had 1 and 3 and then 2 and 4 as the same controller so instead of having to pass controllers back and forth you just use your own and don't cheat. we had like 5 or 6 control pads and a joystick, some of them have been lost though.
-
I semi-collect NES/SNES games, though i've been slacking lately and my collection is rather small. I can sort of compare myself to Brown in that I keep my movie tickets for a while, but I don't actually collect them. Let's see, I collected pokemon cards when it was in style, and I think that's about it.

Nice one to have saved! :)
Should sell them sooner rather than later IMO, the market for old comics has been drying up for quite awhile
-

I have no idea but when Ocarina of Time came out Nintendo sent out a catalogue with Nintendo Power and I remember ordering some action figures, a shirt, and this pocket watch (I don't even know why I bought this I was just REALLY into Zelda at the time). I also ordered one of the ocarinas from Songbird Ocarina, which they're apparently still making (and they have different styles and shit now). The ocarina and pocket watch are the only two things I still have.
-
I'm currently collecting old keyboards/synthesizers because absolutely nobody knows the value of this stuff unless they play for a new wave band or something, it's a good way to raise money for random music equipment and even if it's not worth trading/selling I'm not stuck with something I don't want
I almost found a Yamaha DX-10 one time but that fell through, but other times I found those sort of electronic drum pads you hit with your hand for like 50c and they ended up being worth $30. It's awesome when stuff like that happens. Or the guy who was just giving guitar pedals away
I also don't mean to collect old games but I just randomly found a Sega NOMAD with games again for like 50c so I had to get it. I almost found a Turbografx one time but somebody beat me to it. Though weren't on CD right, or were they? Because the Sega came with some pretty decent games like a real person's collection, but I hate being stuck with a system were I'll never ever find any other games for it ever and I would be better off just emulating it anyway (I have a hard enough time finding any SNES/Genesis game other than MADDEN '92 as it is)
but yeah can somebody give me a comprehensive list of systems you could just download games and put them on CD-r and it would work. Was Neo-Geo like that. If it was something even more recent like Sega Saturn that would be pretty epic. I just know all these obscure game platforms that didn't make it probably directly because of the CD format now are impossible to find games for unless you download roms anyway. I know CD-i is like that but something that's less of a novelty system

I can't vouch for others but the 3DO had no copy protection, and I've read that the Sega CD (and probably other systems around the same time) was the same way. CD burners were pretty much unheard of at the time so they didn't bother with it, and I'm pretty sure you can find torrents with large numbers of games for these systems.
-
although the Dreamcast is a newer system i'm pretty sure it plays burned games extremely well, and they only cost around $20 last time i checked.
-
I asked about that on irc the other day and apparently only the first Dreamcast model can play burned discs. There is a swap trick for I think but it involves opening you Dreamcast up, so you have to be comfortable with that.
You can easily play burned games on the PSX with a swap disc trick though, all it requires is a bit of putty or something else to hold the eject button down (I think I used poster putty for this, it works really well), one legit disc, and getting the timing right with swapping the discs out. There are videos on youtube and I think an FAQ on gamefaqs or ign or something that describe how to do it. Once you figure it out it's really easy though, the biggest thing is that games with a lot of audio or video may be a little glitchy (not the gameplay, just the sound and video itself) unless you use a disc with a similar amount of sound/video. It has to do with the tracks on the disc but I couldn't find any websites that break that down to where I could find the best discs to use. Regardless though, it's an (almost) free fix and completely safe for your machine--except I think it wears the laser out some, but PSXs are so cheap now that it's not going to hurt much if you have to buy another.
-
I collect piles of sketches. :/
Also: If I like an author I collect all their works. Currently working on buying Terry Pratchett's stuff.
-
I had two dreamcasts and both could play burnt games. A friend of mine had a jap dreamcast and it could still play burnt games. I had like a massive spindle of burnt dreamcast games. Those were the good days :D.
I wouldnt say I collect games but I do have rather a massive (pirated) library of games. My originals are 1/10th in amount of my pirated ones llol
-
spores, molds, and fungus
-
I don't actually collect anything, but I want to be a collector of many things. games, cards, action figures, little knickknacks, I just don't have the time/money/energy. I guess I just collect unfufilled collection desires
-
What about beanie babies you guys?
Am I the only one? :welp:
-
as a kid i used to collect "mermaid glass" which was essentially just weathered down glass that you find on beaches.
it was pretty cool once we had a bit cause we'd put it at the bottom of fish tanks.
-
Velfarre can we see a picture of that pocket watch I'm really interested!
I used to collect beanie babies, i've got a huge bag of 'em, and I never throw stuff away so i've got a lot of useless stuff lying around. I do like hoarding dice, though, i've got a bunch of different kinds and colors and sizes just thrown in my drawer.
-
Velfarre can we see a picture of that pocket watch I'm really interested!
for some reason i can't find a pic of the one i have (there was one on ebay about a month ago but the listing is gone now), only this one (http://www.z64planet.com/view.php?img=/img/merchandise/zm_misc_02.jpg). the one i have is similar, only with a generic picture of link (http://pressthebuttons.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/08/19/link.jpg) (slightly different than that one but very very close) instead of the logo and the case has a triforce again instead of the logo

I remember when I was 5 my dad and I had a conversation that went like this:
Dad: When I was a boy, I had a stamp collection. Wouldn't you like to start a collection?
Me: Of stamps?
Dad: Of anything. Stamps, bookmarks, coins from around the world...
Me: Can't I collect something a bit more fun?
Dad: Like what?
Me: Toys.
16 years later and I have hundreds of fucking bookmarks taking up my cupboard space. Shit.
-
when i was young i used to collect a shitload of beast wars and transformers toys. i think it was because getting one transforming toy was like having two toys in one: a robot and a truck. i thought it was pretty sweet. i've lost or broken pretty much all of them, though. these days i don't collect anything.
