Title: Top 10 of 2008
Post by: Herr Artischocke on February 25, 2009, 06:17:19 am
Now that 2008 and the Oscars have passed, what were your ten favorite movies of 2008 (with honorable mentions) and what were the greatest disappointments to you? Please don't start arguments, there is no right or wrong answer and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Also, try to give a brief description of why you put the movie on your list so you aren't just name-dropping.

My 2008 top 10:

1. Slumdog Millionaire
-I can't think of one thing I didn't like about Slumdog Millionaire...it will definitely go down as a classic in time.

2. WALL-E
-Should have been nominated for best picture...my favorite Pixar movie.

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
-A lot like Forrest Gump, but I love that movie and Benjamin was excellent too.

4. Doubt
-Brilliant acting by everybody, especially Viola Davis and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

5. In Bruges
-I am surprised it didn't win best screenplay...I thought it was a very funny and smart film.

6. The Visitor
-A very touching story, great directing, and perfect acting by Richard Jenkins.

7. Iron Man
-The rare superhero movie that has a good story to it.

8. Tropic Thunder
-Exceeded my expectations...I thought I would hate it, but I really enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr.'s performance was hilarious.

9. Get Smart
-Okay, it wasn't an Academy Award-worthy movie, but I couldn't stop smiling while watching it.

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
-The only Judd Apatow production I really enjoyed...it ran a little too long, but it made me laugh a lot.

Honorable mention: The Dark Knight. Although I thought it was mildly entertaining, I find it very overrated and liked Batman Begins much better. There is no denying that Heath Ledger's performance was incredible, though.

Movies that disappointed me were Cloverfield and the new James Bond, while the worst movies I saw last year were Wanted, Indiana Jones 4, and Righteous Kill.

I saw zero movies in theatres this year.  The only new movie from this year I saw AT ALL was Son of Rambow only because I bought it on DVD (didn't come to any of my theatres).  It was at Sundance in 2007 but apparently it wasn't put out in theatres until 2008 according to Wikipedia.

So apparently my list is:

1. Son of Rambow

....it was really good though!

The french guy was pretty terrible but I didn't think he really RUINED THE MOVIE by any means.

Alright here are some I liked from this year:
The Dark Knight
Let the Right One In
Be Kind Rewind
Doomsday

Those are the ones I found on my collection of cinema tickets from 2008. (and [rec], but that's a 2007 film)

However there are a bunch I missed and haven't been able to see yet that I think are good (there's usually more films I think might be good than those that are actually good):
Son of Rambow (looks great but was about one week in the cinema and that was when I didn't have time to go)
Happy-Go-Lucky (similar fate as Rambow, except later in the year)
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (This one had half a week in my local theater just now! But I forgot to go yesterday so it's another one missed...)
Hamlet 2 (This one didn't even get here. I wonder if even the DVD version can be found)
Wall-E (This one was mostly dubbed so I waited for the DVD release. It's on a table at my mother's since my brother got it for Christmas)
In Bruges (Similar fate as Rambow and Lucky)
Slumdog Millionare (Looks really cute and I'm looking forward to its release, which should be in a week or two. So it'll take a month or two to get to my town)

american history x is ridiculously basic in its treatment of race relations. hey...HEY THAT COP ARRESTED A BLACK GUY FOR NO REASON? AND MY FRIENDS DONT LIKE MY BLACK FRIEND?

TRULY THIS IS RACE.

it's all kind of dumb and stars that sallow faced Edward Norton who I can't really stand.

also I didn't see much in 08. lemme think. Dear Zachary, was that an 08 release? Dark Knight, Slumdog, Wrestler was 09 so forget that,  SUPERHERO MOVIE, Ironman, Wall-E. I've got too much old shit to catch up on.

I haven't got round to seeing most of recent good movies that came out in Dec, but I'm seeing Slumdog tonight I think.

Burn After Reading was probably my favourite so far oh and Gran Torino cracked me up too, but I think it wasn't intentional

no country for old men: I really liked this movie, some people hate it, I think they're dumb, but if I could level a criticism it's that it really does draw this overarching conclusion about THINGS...ARE SOMETIMES TRULY EVIL... which is dumb.

Wrestler was 09 so forget that
The Wrestler was 2008 but received a wide release in 09.

Ugh, I love that movie so much, it has to be my favorite for 2008. That is pretty much my "ideal" film, plus it was filmed mostly in Jersey towns a short drive from here. It dealt with all these issues that I've pondered over excessively, and gave me a new outlook on those wrestlers who sit around charging $20 for autographs at all the conventions I go to.

Again, if I could make whatever movie I wanted, it would would come out to be The Wrestler.

Being that I see a movie every week, there is no way I'd remember all the good ones.
a couple of my favorites out of order:

Vantage Point: I thought it was amazing at the time, and still think it's good, but it just doesn't have much rewatchability, if that's a word.
Ironman: I am a mega iron man fan, and if it were horrible I would have still defended it, so I'm glad it's pretty good.
Untraceable: I thought this movie was pretty cool and had the horror feel of the original saw down pat, even though it was technologically incorrect at times.
Changeling: Liked it, kept me guessing throughout the movie and had a lot of actors I enjoy watching.

I do remember the bad very well, as I've been making a list of those:
DOOMSDAY: seriously maybe the worst big budget movie I've ever seen in my life. It really looks like they started without a script.
DEATHRACE: this movie doesn't have much action, so it relied on Jason Statham to actually do some acting. Not pretty. Also the ending was retarded.
YOU DONT MESS WITH THE ZOHAN: this movie is 100% bad. there is nothing good about it. not even jews would like this movie.
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: ended up at this movie on accident. NEVAR AGAIN
W: my movie group was pumped to see this movie, loving a good comedic commentary, but this movie was BORING.

what? he's right. there's not a positive indian character in the film other than jamal and his gf. the only good people (also portrayed as naive) are some Americans.

I mean if you saw Slumdog Millionaire and thought INDIA

MUST BE A FUN PLACE TO GO!

maybe we saw a different movie. India's kind of a shithole and all the things in that movie do happen but none of them happen to one fucking person. of course this was because of the fairy tale aspect of the film (it is destiny etc), but at the same time the fairy tale aspect is shattered by the realism of the scenes. compare this to something like The Fall where the guy tells a children's story full of tropes but even before he turns it on its head he never jars us completely out of the scene, even when reality intervenes. Slumdog is the kind of movie that gets worse in retrospect and I really have no urge to see it ever again. I kind of didn't want to see it the first time.

it's not a bad movie, but it is a dumb movie, and in a year where Let the Right One In, Waltz With Bashir (which I haven't seen but have heard is good), The Wrestler, Che, and Milk (ditto as Waltz) came out, it's disheartening to see weak movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button get attention. if the Oscars meant anything to anyone that wasn't a complete douche, maybe I could summon up some dismay but as it is I'm just mildly annoyed by it.

I like how there is this small trend of people trying to TAKE RYAN DOWN A NOTCH!!! it's the world's worst GW bandwagon as notable members like Mr. Artichoke and Coxswain attempt to break him down!!! seriously it's become a stupid epidemic.

I don't know if you guys are jealous that he and panda have some rapport going on in the music forum that no one else seems to be as good at or if you're mad because he helped annoy Strangeluv, but I'm gonna bank on the fact that whenever a lot of GW notices an 18 year old member with more class and intelligence than they have at like 22 they like to act like dicks. see also: PaulC.

it's also annoying because that used to be my role only with a lot more deliberate agitation on my part but now people tack that onto panda or Ryan. why are you guys such dicks *ignores indian guy shooting off the fingers of an infant* ignore him! he has...cancer...

seriously though y'all are on notice because this is the world's worst trend and just because the rest of us are growing embittered at GW doesn't give you all the right to try and kick someone in the dick for a joke post.

Saying "lol hey spics/injuns/wops/niggers are in this movie" isn't funny and doesn't really tell what he thought of the movie...but if you boil it down and say the movie was stereotypical of India like you did, and you didn't like it because of that, then you are coming from somewhere.

curious case of benjamin button rules, the wrestler was really good, rachel getting married was decent too. (maybe it hit home with me a bit? FAMILY MEMBER WITH DRUG ADDICTION..whoa thats my whole family!) i haven't seen waltz with bashir either but it looks good. the dark night, revolutionary road, and the reader were all really good. curious case of benjamin button i liked a whole lot i think because i like brad pitt and cate blanchett a lot.

dude it stars kirk cameron as a firefighter whos has to use the... LOVE DARE to save his marriage

the love dare:

The Love Dare is a non-fiction marriage-related book written by Alex and Stephen Kendrick. It is a 40-day Christian devotional designed to strengthen marriages. Each daily devotion includes scripture, a statement of principle, the day’s "dare," and a journaling area and check box to chart progress.

sounds like a great movie!

also lool

Captain Caleb Holt (Kirk Cameron) is a firefighter in Albany, Georgia and firmly keeps the cardinal rule of all firemen, "Never leave your partner behind". But Caleb's home life is an altogether different story; his seven-year marriage to his wife Catherine (Erin Bethea) is on the verge of implosion. Neither one understands the pressures the other faces, and after a particularly heated argument in which Caleb literally screams in Catherine's face, she declares she wants out of the marriage, then takes off her wedding ring and stuffs it in her clothing bureau.
While Caleb claims to his friends and co-workers that Catherine is over-sensitive and disrespectful, Catherine simultaneously claims to her peers that Caleb is insensitive to her needs and doesn't listen to her. Further catalyzing Catherine's motivation for divorce is Caleb's addiction to Internet pornography and a large sum of money he has saved up for a fishing boat he intends to buy, ignoring the fact that Catherine's disabled mother is in need of hospital equipment that she cannot afford, and which insurance refuses to cover.

btw there's a horrible story behind slumdog; the child actors actually live in shitholes. Danny Boyle stupidly put their share of the movie into a fund they could only access if they made it to college but with their lives and the new fame, it was pretty unlikely they would. luckily the Indian government got shamed into giving them houses earlier this week.

Say an Indian director travelled to New Orleans for a few months to film a movie about Jamal Martin, an impoverished African American who lost his home in Hurricane Katrina, who once had a promising basketball career, but who -- following a drive-by shooting -- now walks with a permanent limp, whose father is in jail for selling drugs, whose mother is addicted to crack cocaine, whose younger sister was killed by gang-violence, whose brother was arrested by corrupt cops, whose first born child has sickle cell anaemia, and so on. The movie would be widely panned and laughed out of theatres.

alright now first of all, we both know this is not what ryan was saying at all.  like FULL FO DIRTY INJUNS clearly does not imply no. . .. positive. . .role models gimme a break!!!  he was just jokin and i would not call it particularly racist given that it's the wrong race but ya come on.  also how many role models were even in the film to begin with?  this is not a very good argument i don't think.  only two of the three main characters were positive role models??  what do you even mean by GOOD PEOPLE.  i would not really call jamal's brother a bad person plus you had random characters like that blind kid who was pretty nice, and the cop who in the end wasn't completely bad.  i don't even know why you're talking about this tho because yeah nothing about DIRTY INJUNS joke has much to do with a lack of positive role models i don't think.

also yea it's pretty dumb in some ways but HEH...DUMB AS HELL is kinda silly i think.  if you would've taken the woah . .his life has prepared him to answer these exact questions part out of it i would've liked it.  i liked the parts of the movie that were just the flashbacks, which was like 85% of it.  aside from that part of it i'm not sure why you think it is DUMB and not just NOT AMAZING.  dumb how??  you say the fairy tale part of it is shattered by the realism of some of the scenes but i don't know why you would think this.

and whoa dont bring me into this shit.  JEALOUS....HES IN TIGHT WITH PANDA cut this out!!!  also dude it's mr artichoke and he made a single one-liner, idk why you're even bothering with this.

but alright now that i'm here you two are being pretty gay.  you both do this thing where you are obnoxious to people you don't like for not a whole lot of reason and it's just irritating to have to watch.  honestly he is not a SMART GUY but he has not said much that was particularly objectionable and you're both being really childish which is ironic because you know, "you fucking child".

actually i told myself i wasnt gonna get annoyed by this topic but now i am!!!  this type of shit is pretty disgusting.  i'm trying not to FLY OFF THE HANDLE HERE but jesus christ are you serious?

the point is even if it was a joke racism post it's not WRONG by any means. the movie does portray DIRTY INDIANS. also a child who got blinded for life by his brother tells him who's on a bill this is your definition of nice. a cop who ELECTROCUTES HIM and then can't prove he's cheating isn't completely bad. come on dude.

it was dumb as fuck dude. I went on the show...to find her... then you have characters being blinded by spoons and child prostitution sandwiching scenes where a guy pours money out into a tub, lies in it, and then dies in it...get that symbolism? or when for some odd reason a child Krishna appears in the middle of a riot (note: Indian people do not dress their kids up as gods, ever). he creates some kind of evil kingdom where Jamal Malik is the only good person rescuing his princess ("and live on what?" "...love" this was the dumbest thing I heard in 08) who also is a pretty boring character on her own (w00t another movie where the only purpose of the female character is as a prize for the male ones!). it's a dumb movie.

i just wanted to get warned (approx: 90%) and make him go away! HOW QUAINT.

once again it's part of the fairy tale aspect of the story he is a beat up commoner etc but I wonder if any indian people really liked the realism aspects of the movie or were just bothered by the idiosyncracies of the indian people portrayed. like all the people gathering around tv sets in the middle of Agra wtf even villages with loadsetting power outages have several TVs, Agra is a tourist destination.

I'm gonna be a dick but seriously shut the fuck up and stop being an asshole. Who even said he was an alcoholic?

Did you talk to him personally about this or are you just being a dick and making stupid assumptions because there is a difference between having a DRINKING PROBLEM and being an ALCOHOLIC! Seriously, you just come in here calling someone a fucking idiot for something they either A) missed B) just isn't true or C) he couldn't have possibly known. Myself included.

also what dietcoke said, just set a certain time for yourself to read and try your damnest to stick to it. Whether that be on the toilet or in bed or on a bus or whatever. the movie does portray DIRTY INDIANS
dirty indians in what sense?  no man it's not like sin city where everyone is BWAHAHAA....EVIL hehehe.  dirty as in most live in abject poverty?  yes but come on, this is what most of the movie is about.

Quote
also a child who got blinded for life by his brother tells him who's on a bill this is your definition of nice
dont even know what this sentence means.  are you sure you watched the movie this time??  this isnt what happened.  wait no it's just phrased poorly.  yeah this is my definition of nice because if you remember that much about the exchange you remember how benevolent he was.  don't skew things just to make it seem like i am wrong dawg

Quote
a cop who ELECTROCUTES HIM and then can't prove he's cheating isn't completely bad. come on dude.
he was a pretty alright guy in the end.  yes he electrocuted him but you know, standards for these things vary depending on where you are.  was this something that would've been done here?  nope.  but at the same time taking him out of the context he is in and judging him but a different set of cultural standards is silly.  relative to that setting yeah he was a pretty okay guy.  you could call him STERN BUT FAIR.  it is not as if it's just GOOD VS BAD here.  to me, some of the characters seemed to reflect an active attempt on the part of the writer or director or whoever to show that they were not one-dimensionally good/evil.

also what are you even citing here.  i said the GAMESHOW angle was pretty dumb but had they taken it out i dont think you can fairly say YO THIS MOVIE....IS DUMB AS FUCK.  cliffhanger is dumb as fuck.  xXx: state of the union is dumb as fuck.  one of us here has no concept of degrees and i dont think its me!!  i don't know what your issue with CHILD PROSTITUTION or any of the other stuff is, the bathtub scene was pretty heavy-handed, the child krishna isn't anything you'd be able to know without BEING INDIAN, and idk i would not even consider it an EVIL KINGDOM.  it's some normal shitty world!  jamal isnt the only good person and yea hes trying to SAVE her but i do not think it can be simplified to a damsel in distress story because a lot of the other parts of it do not really FIT into that.  also NO ONE was a very interesting character.  don't act like just because she was fairly simple that it was sexist because there was no one on the cast who WASNT fairly simple.  the prize thing is valid but i think thats a reflection of the culture maybe??  anyway if you just look at it as kinda fairytalish story put in a gritty//realistic setting then i think it is okay.  its a.....its a modern fairytale...

Quote

nah it's still not acceptable because there is shit you dont say to people???  whoa he posts once every six months and made some post directed towards ryan..guess i gotta say things that are ridiculously inappropriate in any context.  no adult talks like this dude and if you dont recognize THE LINE or think it's fine because it's MR A and not someone you care about or because you were in the mood to be warned then the problem is with you

Quote
Mr. A yelling about racism when not that long ago he used to get on irc and be exceedingly vulgar about his girlfriend and their sex practices is pretty hypocritical
how is this hypocritical, exactly.  also that might've been quite a while ago, actually

it's relevant because it makes him look a wee bit hypocritical! it's fine for him to talk extremely vulgar and plain retarded but when i call an Indian an INJUN it's okay for him to call me immature!

i mean.  he called you a RACIST not immature.  i'm having trouble understanding it.  like yes he was dumb for not getting the post but steel said this too and i feel like it's a bit of a stretch to call him hypocritical.  he gives explicit details about his sex life, therefore he is a hypocrite for saying you are a racist for using a potential slur?  i don't think the issue was with the VULGARITY of it but with, you know, the slur itself.  i'm sure if you said FUCKIN COCKSUCKER he would not have complained.  there's a diff between saying stuff thats vulgar and saying slurs!  i dont think people take issue with them for the same reason.  i don't, anyway.  he only called you immature after the INJUN thing when you brought up his girlfriend which is probably fairly accurate.  if it happened like you said it did it would be pr. hypocritical but it didnt!!

idk man bort for example has told me pretty graphic details about his sex life but i wouldnt call him a hypocrite if he called me a racist for saying something potentially racist, or if he called me immature when i randomly insulted his girlfriend as an attack against him.  neither of those things are very similar to telling dudes about your sex life!  actually it might be kinda immature to blab about your sexual encounters but come on man we have all done this and it's not on the same level as saying YEAH WELL....YOUR MOM'S A BIG FAT WHALE FUCK YOU

heres something.......... top pics for 2008............ i am counting wrestler as 2008 movie

1. The Dark Knight
2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
3. Iron Man
4. Slumdog Millionaire
5. Burn After Reading
6. Tropic Thunder
7. The Wrestler
8. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
9. Zack and Miri Make a Porno
10. Hancock

Biggest disappointment was probably Quantum of Solace. It was decent but Casino Royale was much better. New Indiana Jones was disappointing too but I'm a big fan and I still liked it. It's by no means great though. Also Get Smart was pretty decent too and those are pretty much all the movies I remember seeing in 2008. I still gotta watch Wall-E. tbh it was a surprisingly good year for movies at least for me, i usually have hard time picking like 3-4 movies which i clearly liked but this time i got 10!

I mentioned several times I was seeing this across the forum. people just wanna get mad at Ryan for joke posts. it's dumb and I don't know how it started. they've been doing it to you too, remember earl chip, climbtree, and coxswain all doing the same thing? it's stupid and annoying and I don't care if Mr. A is a cause or just another bandwagoner but I'm tired of people trying to take other people down a notch.
a series of unrelated items...what a disgusting trend! let's try to force this one, pidge says to himself, it'll be the basis of my defense. yes, yes...this annoying trend. earl chip versus headphonics, a regular old david and goliath

except it was just between me and him, and unlike coxswain criticizing whoever for whatever reason, it only concerned us. I wanted to end this stupid animosity we had going on for months. this somehow sounds like earl taking jeff down a peg at all?? there were no pegs to take down, no pegs. maybe you should add headphonics versus pidge and ryan to your list instead pops

and I barely saw anything new. the good ones were wall-e and the dark knight, and the kinda bad ones were indiana jones and get smart. I wish I had liked get smart because FUNNY SPY FILM but it wasn't really funny. I am a fan of indiana jones, or at least I used to be when I was a kid, but the new movie was really dumb. and maybe it was just me, but it seemed to lack any element of exploration, just a bunch of hopping from location to location just to have an action scene or to get on with the stupid plot. I dunno, it was probably the worst movie I saw since transformers.
