www.quakelive.com
I am glad to finally play this fucking game but I was at first skeptical of how this would work in browser. Well my final opinion on it is: Fucking A. Its an amazing re-creation of the original Quake 3 Arena and any of you who used to play that should definitely play this. Something you should note is the LONG waiting time to get the plug-in installer(3 hour wait for me, was on a line with 30,000 other people :O). There are also many character skins to choose from including:

Yeah, you can play as the Doom marine. It is also on par with it's 1999 counter part graphics wise, which is impressive for a browser game. It supports 5 modes with 40 maps, check this shit out!
-
i shall give this a try right now.
EDIT
Ok dude already.......
Position in queue: 120
???? i have to wait fr them to let "some" people in. arghh :fogetcry:
-
ive been sitting at the load screen for 15 mins its not doing anything :(

just wait, its worth it. I warned you though, servers are packed so prepare too wait, once you install the patch you won't ever have too wait in line anymore.
-
I've been waiting for about an hour now, but I loved Quake III so i'm willing to wait it out.
-
Yeah, you can play as the Doom marine.
old q3a news
welcome back to 1999
Either way, I wanna try this out. I'm glad Q3A has become free and an eSports game.
I gotta admit though, I was sure this was a downloadable game, sorta like Trackmania Nations.
I'm surprised it's a browser game.

Your right, i kind of forgot. Been so long since I played the original you know?
But in any case, yes its a browser game and only needs an addon to be installed for your internet browser so you can play or patch the game. But other than that, it plays just like any other browser game really and its pretty impressive for one.
Edit: Oh and by the way, unfortunantly i found out you still do have to wait even when you get the addon just to log into the server. I am guessing it will lower in a couple of days, too many people logging into the server at once. I hope in the full version there are multiple servers to lower the tedium.
-
Yeah I tried to play the night it opened but holy shit the lines. I just played my "placement" match and haven't been back to it since, hoping the queues die down a bit soon.
-
I was in the closed beta and I agree, it's fucking awesome. I feel sorry for you guys with that shitty waiting, that kinda sucks, but it really is worth it, as it IS FREE.
-
Position in queue: 18990
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFff
man this game is mighty popular, isnt it
-
This is hip. I'll wait like a few days for it to die down a bit though. Can't wait to Gibb again!
-
The lines are giant but they go down at a good rate, at least today. I should be in in an hour at best.
-
Quake Live should have multiple servers to prevent this from happening when the complete product comes out online, or at least increase the player count on the server. Even still, waiting an hour is not too bad as I find many things to do while waiting(for example, my 360 makes time pass by really fast, I reccomend playing games :Dā).
-
I got in, and I have this thing to say:
Don't bother with the queue just yet. The classification match does not work properly right now.
You fight this 10 minute trial match with Crash to decide on your skill level, where her AI dynamically changes to reflect your capabilities. This is actually made in a kinda good way, but Crash can get REALLY tough and REALLY smart on you. :(
The problem is, this match, right now, never registers. You can't play the game because it always tells you you didn't beat the classification match yet.
So...
-
Is this very different to playing quake 3 not in a browser?
-
Not particularily. The main difference is that this is free and some maps are different. And there's an added chaingun.
And there's much, much more players.
Otherwise, check the Fullscreen option in the Quake Live settings and you can't even tell it's a browser app.

yeah you have to beat her to continue, i did but it wasn't easy. Just use the rocket launcher or plasma gun. there is actually NOBODY on right now o.o

Yeah uh I did, and so did LT. I beat her TWICE, and both times i was told afterwards that I have to finish a qualifying match. You know, THE QUALIFYING MATCH THAT I JUST FINISHED!
So I'm not going back to this until I know for sure that its fixed because gat damn she can be hard to beat towards the end of the match.

What's the deal with this game? Last night I went to quakelive.com and I waited for about 5 hours, so I switched browsers until about 5 pm this evening EST. I still was not able to get past the initial "QUAKE LIVE is loading now..." screen. I clicked on a link that only redirected me to the official forums. Is anyone else have this much trouble accessing the game?

try again now, less people are on right now surprisingly. I joined in just 2 minutes. Problem is that now there is a new issue: for some reason, it won't connect too games. Its a problem ID will most likely fix in time, and I fully understand why this is all happening. It is just a beta, the reasons why you guys are having these problems like not getting past the training or not connecting has yet too be fully polished. Also if you cannot connect, just play bot matches, the AI is actually pretty good.
Edit: What the fuck?! It crashed on me in the middle of a bot match! I wanted to report this on the forum, but tons of people already did(3 pages full of "I cannot connect either" and growing). If ID wants this too be successful, they NEED to fix these issues.
Edit2: Wow I think they already fixed the issue! Well actually, its kind of random now but at least it's fixed.
-

Thanks alot for not actually reading what I said buddy.
Really, thanks.
Either way, the queue is pretty short this morning, so I'll try again.
Also, fixing issues is what this is about. Being successful or not isn't the main issue(though it's still obviously one) right now. This is open BETA, don't forget.
EDIT: It does work now. The skill match registers, so, cool.
I fucking hate how high Crash's AI ranks up on Expert though. Fuck me.
Q3A never had AI like this ._.
-

Really, thanks.
No i mean at the moment i logged on, not as much people were on(literally like a bit over 350 if i recall correctly, which if you saw how many people there was on the Beta's launch, that's not a lot) and there were no servers up so nobody was really playing. You said And there's much, much more players.
and at that MOMENT, there wasn't. But i just checked, more people are on than last night, as expected.

Yeah its been on and off with me, like one second it is working smoothly and a second later, it goes down the shitter. The AI matches need to be fixed with the higher difficulties, i do agree with you as that really ticks me off too. Oh well, AI my skill level is not too bad :/
-
I wonder if they will implement a way to play any of those hundreds of custom maps later...
EDIT: because I'd really love to play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34LtrnnXQTc on this
-
I waited in the queue, and then installed the plugin, and now I have to wait in the queue again. This is taking forever.
-
After playing this game for an extensive amount of time now, and issues aside this brings back a lot of memories. Also, ID software realized the huge server flooding plus other issues and had this to say:
Obviously, the biggest factor we've had to deal with is the overwhelming number of people that have visited the site, and in nearly all cases encountered a large list of people ahead of them in the queue. Couple points on this:
1. We obviously didn't intend for tens of thousands of people to have to wait in the queue, but it was put in place for a reason, and that was so once you made it to the site, it still performed fairly well and didn't crash under heavy loads, which for the most part has worked well. We apologize for the frustration a line causes, but it will be in place until we can scale and optimize our back-end to accommodate "everyone." This is our top priority right now and when we get to that point, there will be no queue. You can certainly trust us on this - for a game funded by advertising revenue, we don't want a queue keeping you out anymore than you want it.
2. As mentioned in the developer notes post, it's was very difficult to estimate how many people to expect when opening this. There are so many things that can affect traffic to a site, and like many online games or services during launch, we got slammed. We also had a number of hardware and software issues that we're still working through. It's important to at least note that we're trying to walk a fine line with this project, in that we're running a backend system more like an MMO than a FPS; but we're not charging you $60 up front to help offset our costs or charging a monthly fee to play. Hopefully, it then makes sense to everyone that we need to be responsible with the costs of our infrastructure and grow or optimize as demand warrants. We're in this process now.
3. We had a few bugs in the queue that caused a number of issues. Most of these have been addressed and the queue should be running more efficiently and reliably, including not kicking you back to the queue after downloading the plug in.
Training
Because of the heavy load on our backend systems and software, we were having a number of players who would have to repeatedly play the match against Crash before it would allow access to the site. One aspect of this problem is specific to launch in that EVERYONE needs to play that - moving forward, there will be far more people that already have an account and go straight into the website.
**IMPORTANT** For the short term - in an effort to minimize people needing to play the training match over, we've disabled the "reporting" of all games other than training games into the database. This will effectively make all games that you play online "un-ranked" and stats will not be collected, but will ensure that the training game reports get through. We will return to normal stats reporting as soon as possible.
Email Delivery
Another issue with having a huge influx of players registering is sending the confirmation emails. We've seen reports of players waiting several hours for your confirmation email. What happens here is that when we send massive amounts of email, the mail providers like gmail and yahoo (two of the most popular for our players) throttle the amount of mail that they will let us send through their system. So, our system has sent your emails, but they are basically sitting in their own queue and released to you as your mail provider sees fit. These problems will improve after the initial rush of unregistered players, and we will continue to improve that system.
Password recovery
We are aware that the password recovery system is not functioning and we are working to fix it as soon as possible.
Everyone here appreciates your patience during these early days of opening the site. We've seen a lot of terrific "reviews" of the site and game from those that have made it through the queue and hope that everyone remembers that we want you in the game as bad as you want to be there - so we're working hard on all of the above and will continue to keep you updated.
The QUAKE LIVE Team
Lets hope they make this more smooth, as fun as this game is waiting 30-60 minutes to play it is kind of ridiculous.
-

Again I'm not sure you read properly man. You mixed up quotes from different posts in there.
"Thanks alot for not reading" was about how you said I had to beat Crash to continue, while in the post ranting about the skill match not registering I said I HAD beat her, but it was glitching out.
"Much more players" was in answer to Mark's post, asking for differences between this and Q3A. I meant to say QL has much more players than Q3A did in the past few years.
And I have no idea what you were even talking about working smoothly and going bad, unless you just meant AI difficulty.
Either way, this shit is great.
-
I waited in the queue for like two minutes, installed, and got to play right away. Holy shit this runs smooth. Not used to 40-60 fps on games....
I came in the next day and was in line with several thousands of people ahead of me. Interest in it shot down drastically.
-
And I have no idea what you were even talking about working smoothly and going bad, unless you just meant AI difficulty.
What I meant by that was that many players ran into a problem where they couldn't connect to any servers and that they had problems with lag. It happens on random and when it does, significantly less people log in meaning the line is shorter. The problem is fixed like 5-15 minutes later and the servers get clogged again.
-
Thanks, I'm going to try playing this right now. This looks awesome.
Without having checked what they actually use for this (PROBABLY what I think they do) this is the exact kind of stuff that you might use Adobe Alchemy (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/alchemy/) for. If I had time, I'd see to recreating the browser-based version of Quake with it. Too bad I know nothing about ActionScript 3.0.
EDIT: rats. They're not supporting Mac OS X. I guess that means they're not using Alchemy either.
-
Nope it's a custom plugin for Quake Live, but Quake I was already converted through alchemy (it was shown an an Adobe MAX conference) so hopefully we'll see the shareware portion online soon.

Yeah, this is what I mean! I nearly went into cardiac arrest when I saw him boot up Quake. Theoretically, porting Quake III should be just as easy (but not as cool).
-
I'm trying to do the skill test against crash but I have no idea what to do at the part where the door closes after a set amount of time and you have to make it through before that time's up. This looks like it should be really easy so maybe I'm just really dumb. The wall denotes I should be RUNNING FAST but I have no idea how to do this. I've looked in the controls and there is no run button, so then I started trying to propel myself towards the door with the rocket launcher but that comes about 1s too short.
????

You have to follow the trainer in order to proceed, or you could just press F3 to get right too the battle. Keep in mind that if the downloads aren't complete, you might be in training well over the time limit.

if you use the rocket launcher at the right angle and have good timing you should be able to just make it.
-
Wow, Liquid Ocelot you really don't read posts at all. That's not even what he was asking.
I'd answer but I have the same question :(
looks like we aint expert material...

Sorry, its my damn ADD, I tend too read things without paying attention.
-
Report: Apparently you do just rocket through the expert part. You have to get the right angle though.
I really, really suck at this game. I really do. I stink. 90% of the time I am following off of the arena into space or getting mysteriously killed (I swear everybody but me knows some secret way to make any weapon kill in one hit :(ā) but what is the point of a game if you dont suck at it, eh? Who wants to be a pro right at the start (nobody)
-
Don't worry, you will get better. You just need to get used to the high speed of the game, once you do the game gets much more addicting. The way it works with me though is that no matter how better I get, I still die a lot. One match I could be like a tank and blow everyone away, then another match I just die very often.
-
The last door you can reach with either rockets OR bunny hopping.
But you have to be pretty good at bunny hopping.
ps: there's also a secret hidden in that obstacle course. :)
-
(I swear everybody but me knows some secret way to make any weapon kill in one hit :(ā) but what is the point of a game if you dont suck at it, eh? Who wants to be a pro right at the start (nobody)
It really does feel that way. Despite having the same accuracy of the top players (20-30% in my tier) my kill count never comes as close.
-
I really hate that opening game. Me and Crash were even on 2-2, then RIGHT as the match is coing to an end she fragged me with a missle...
Bitch...
-
I had an awful match with Crash(what makes it worse is that i'm not really good at this type of game anyhow.) I think I beat her like 15-8 or something.
-
I was playing on advanced, and I was playing EXTREMELY defensively. Don't know why, but I never play offensively online.
Except for CoD 4 and Wolfenstein ET, where I find offense more fun, esp when it gets me multiple kill sprees in a row, CoD 4 especially, 3->5->Die->3. XD
-
I don't like Crash's difficulty, it keeps increasing as you get more aggressive. Not that I don't hate a challenge, but this is an unfair challenge.
-
As long as she didn't have a rocket launcher I didn't have any trouble killing her.
-
Entering the final door is easy, you just have to understand the mechanics which make it possible. As soon as you land on the ground where you rocket jump, turn your back to the force field and aim at the ground at a 45 degree angle. Then, begin to fast run back(I do not know the technical name of it), but it's where you run in a direction and jump, then jump again once you hit the ground. If you don't do this, then you won't have enough momentum from your rocket shots. When you fast run backwards, right before you enter the force field, jump and shoot at the ground, once you hit the ground jump and shoot again. You should be able to enter the door in time if you follow this right.
-
I just ran through the force field, turned and rocket boosted backwards through the door.
Then left the match 'cause I was getting my ass kicked, expert really kicks your ass =/
-
Yeah, she was kind of hard for me, too. We were actually tied at 13 when we entered "sudden death" mode, then after a while she finally killed me.
-
Well I#ve worked out how I play best, give me time to grab a lightning gun, some armor and health, possibly a rocket launcher but not neccessarry, then cover me while I shock those up close and minigun those away from me. The rocket launcher's just for random sprays and running away faaaaaaaaaaast.
But I'm scared by the shotgun, I swear I was taking massive damage ACROSS the map =/ Then again, the plasma rifle was just.... argh.
Whats everyones account name btw? Mines CociCookie (As if you had to guess)
-
MrEltee.
Gonna play this a bit right now waiting for dinner.
-
Same as my gamertag, look on my sig. For those who don't feel like doing that: OnEsHoTkIlL794
But I'm scared by the shotgun, I swear I was taking massive damage ACROSS the map =/ Then again, the plasma rifle was just.... argh.
You will probably not wanna play with me, when i get those weapons or the nail gun, I can become a killing machine.
-
My name on QL is "Centauri".
-
Hey, the stat tracking and achievements are back! I also found that some items that weren't on a map before are now there, like Invisibility appeared on multiple maps that had no invisibility before the stat tracking went back online. Plus most if not all of the glitches are fixed there is no more waiting, every time I log in there is no wait whatsoever now.
-
Yeah, I noticed achieves were on when it said I'd played 1 online match.
However, that means I have anouther 40+ Gaunt kills again =[ I got 6 in one match once tho', so I'm happy ^^
-
Has anyone had a problem in this where when you choose to leave a match at the end of it, your browser crashes?
This happens to me, and it doesn't save any of my frags or anything before the crash.
-
Mine doesn't crash, what browser you using? That might be the problem.
-

Do NOT use Internet Explorer for this game. It works for some people, but it is more prone to crashing with that browser. Firefox is the best way to go here, and it just runs better in it too.
-
I'm not stupid. I haven't used Internet Explorer in years.
I am using Firefox, the latest one in fact. What's the problem?
-

This happens to me only when I get out of a match during a load session. I use firefox btw.
-
This is fucking weird then. It crashes if I try leaving mid-match, as well as at the end of matches if I choose to leave the game.
-
Did you try asking around the official Quake Live forums? I know there's a few threads about firefox crashing and whatnot.
-

Yeah, try doing that. They might not post back(probably won't), but I know they would probably find the problem and fix it.
Edit: There is an upgrade now, not sure what its for.
