Title: Any Alchohol Consumption May
Post by: Boulvae on February 27, 2009, 04:43:44 am
http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2009/02/24/one-or-two-units-of-alcohol-a-day-can-increase-the-risk-of-cancer/

Okay so we all know too much alchohol can greatly increase the chance of getting cancer, but this study shows that any consumption of any alchohol period will increase the risks of getting cancer by a "signficant margin" (15% for those who drink 1-2 units a day). Basically this study, and many before it puts it this way, the more you drink and how long until your next drink will determine how big that risk of getting cancer is. But also that it doesn't matter what kind of alchohol it is it'll still increase your chances relatively equally.

Anyways despite that it's a study on woman, this probably also applies to men too, just specific details have not been found.

I didn't know too much alcohol can increase the chances of getting cancer.

But honestly, there's so much crap that influences cancer that this won't affect my alcohol consumption.  There's genes, activity, sunlight, exposure to just about fucking anything, and a bunch of other crap.  I'd rather risk getting cancer than quit drinking beer.  Besides, I can continue drinking beer even if I get cancer.

you shouldn't and you shouldn't, you're dumb.

however this study is dumber! it surveys women only, british women only, and probably mostly white women. the comments touch on this, although the blog writer keeps defending the study a lot. this is far from a scientific survey and just because a million women were surveyed, it does not mean a million cancer patients were, and when breast cancer is a substantial part of the survey, I'm not sure your scary topic title is merited.

ALOT of shit can give you cancer this is dumb I mean its good to know I guess but its still dumb. why don't they put the money on these stupid studies trying to demonize everything considered sinful and cure goddamn cancer.

its a good thing I don't drink as often anymore though. Don't want to get CANCER even though I probably will at some point the odds aren't looking very good and I'll do my best to avoid it but I'm not going to obsess or worry or cut this kind of shit out because OH NO CHANCES OF CANCER

I'm really surprised two people said they didn't know heavy drinking caused cancer. it causes RECTAL CANCER of all the fucking things too. yeah don't drink heavily it's a huge risk factor for rectal cancer.

I was skeptical and became alarmed when I read:

"Although many people believe that wine, and red wine in particular, is generally good for their health, scientific studies say otherwise."

especially since I've read numerous studies that state otherwise and there's a lot of research on resveratrol going on.

my grandpa had colon cancer and he luckily got through it and my grandma died from it among other things (both on my dads side) my mom's side seems pretty good about not getting it but you never know

I don't want a tumor in my ass anything but that I could lose a nut I don't use them very often anyways

This "Journal of the National Cancer Institute" looks pretty legit (Oxford publication) but the study itself is pretty dumb.

http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/djn514v1 - Go here to read the non-media version.

A) It is ridiculously short for a scientific paper.
B) I can't find any data (tables/figures) to support their conclusions. It is pretty sketchy
C) The only thing this study showed is a correlation between alcohol consumption and cancer IN WOMEN. Nothing about men.
D) If you read the journal, breast cancer incidence due to alcohol consumption rose by 11 cancers per 1000 cancers (or women? not sure, wording is awkward) for BREAST cancer
E) All of the other tested cancer incidence rates rose by approximately 1 per 1000. That's a 0.1% higher risk. That's within random error for a study like this. I call biased bullshit.

All this confirms to me is alcohol consumption raises risk of breast cancer in women. Period.

it could easily be a case of asprin in the arsenic

check the P values ASE

also i don't know if the stereotype holds true in britain or not but the type of women that would drink regularly you would expect to be at a higher risk for other forms of cancer. i am a student and i'd have trouble finding someone that had 2 units of alcohol a day unless it was averaged. stressed execs white wine with their valium cigarette sex

In these types of studies, you'll always find contradicting points of view. As for alcohol, some studies like this, shows it increases the risks of cancer. While several other show the contrary.

My point? Just take it cool with alcohol. :-)

Alcohol is a solvent. It dissolves all the bad and leaves the good. You use alcohol to clean away bad things, open wounds etcetera. If you drink alcohol it cleans away the bad things.
This is simple science and I wish more could understand it but the way the United States education system is set up I fear this will never be a reality.

yup apparently it's perfectly okay to have a cancer research charity that appeals only to this demographic! :(

I am exaggerating this a bit because the actual research they fund is pretty general but most of their fundraising is geared towards women.
Title: Any Alchohol Consumption May
Post by: Vellfire on February 27, 2009, 01:32:16 pm
the CHARITY is geared towards women but it's completely retarded to base scientific studies about cancer toward just women because there are gender-specific cancers.  until dudes can get ovarian cancer and girls can get testicular cancer, then you can't say HERE'S SOME SCIENCE until you use both in your study

if the wording was better it would be okay but right now it's just talking in general when what it means is "this is true just for white british women and no one else"

I don't see how drinking any alcohol one time could increase your risk so much. I've used the hand sanitizer that you don't need water for and it contains alcohol, wouldn't that get into the blood stream or even transfer onto your food that you touch?

because it's just correlational and you can't be certain of the nature of the relationship. you'd have a fairly hard time getting ethical clearance to control the amount of alcohol women drink to see how much cancer they get

Post by: Artis Leon Ivey Jr on March 01, 2009, 09:21:15 pm
man whats up with this. yes, the sun does cause cancer. a lot of cancer. it is called skin cancer and it was a pretty huge issue for a while. it causes cancer because of us and how we nearly blew up the ozone layer that kept harmful UV radiation out.

also air and dust if they are full of asbestos cause cancer as well, which is why we remove it. smoking cigarettes causes cancer. it's rare to say not doing something will but if you're active and eat healthy you probably won't get it as your immune system will possibly fight it off.

how is any of this HEH...DUMB. all this makes sense! so many people say UGH EVERYTHING CAUSES CANCER but then they list things that...do cause cancer and are known to be serious risk factors. if you're going to cite frivolous studies maybe actually cite them.

you would care if you got cancer.

and you would say BOY I WAS A STUPID FUCK.

dont go out without sunblock. try to quit smoking or chewing tobacco. do not become an alcoholic. maybe eat something other than a powdered sugar covering over a fried pork rind. these are steps everyone can take to prevent cancer.

seriously though are you telling me if dokmartini was found 100% right and that cooked meat is a huge contributing factor in giving you cancer you would still eat loads of steak.
Title: Any Alchohol Consumption May
Post by: jamie on March 01, 2009, 11:13:49 pm
i'm veggie so nope!

but i see what you're saying. it takes a big thing - like, i don't smoke. i probably would smoke a lot more than i do if it wasn't dangerous, so i guess if it's extreme like that then i will avoid doing stuff. like i said i'm not really a guy who does things to excess anyway with one glaring exception and as far as that goes cancer is pretty low on the list of the reasons why i am trying to quit doing that.

i do smoke when i've been drinking so basically every now and then i like to inject a big old dump of poison into my lifestyle, i guess, but smoking when i'm sober makes me feel ill so i don't do it. that's probably a lot of a bigger reason than fear of cancer.

of course i would care if i got cancer but i don't think i actually would sit there and go "oh man if only i hadn't spent all those 10 hour sessions in a sunbed..." cos it's done? i like to enjoy myself and it's just fortunate for me that all the things i like to do don't give me cancer. i'm talking about hearing little things like using a mobile phone will increase your cancer chances by 5% or something. i totally believe it, why wouldn't i? but i just don't really...care, i guess. i don't think i'm gonna get cancer from using a mobile phone and if i do then shit i'm unlucky but it could come from a million different places and i just don't worry about it enough to defend against any but the big risk activities like smoking.

sometimes when i sit with my laptop actually on my lap my balls get a little sore and i think "..ir-irradiated nuts?? No thanks!!!". i dunno if that's a thing. not the radiation. that applying a laptop to your balls will fuck em up. i might look into that at some point. but probably not.

basically what i'm saying is health? don't give a shit. if i feel good, then i'm doing something right. if i feel shitty then i quit doing whatever that thing is. i make vague stabs at eating healthy and staying active every now and then, nothing too impressive but i think it is probably enough.

I sorta see where you're coming from Jamie, like I get what you're trying to say, but you should probably watch health warnings when it comes to stuff like cancer. At least a bit.

That said, this study needs to be a bit more full and backed up before I'll believe it. Alcohol is generally not good for you if you drink it too often and the control group is way too specific imo.

Also, what the hell was that about red wine not being healthy? Isn't this like common, proven knowledge by now?

yeah but how many people do you know who sit with a laptop on their lap working several hours a day? i mean i'm on the computer WAY TOO MUCH and i'd say 90% of the time i use a laptop it's on a desk or table. people do that shit yeah, like a couple hours sitting on a couch with the laptop, but i don't think the number of people who sit there with their laptops on their laps long enough to have their testicles damaged is that big

i'm not challenging that it's a factor in that happening i'm just saying i don't think that's a really considerable problem among laptop users

Try drinking tea or coffee. Switching to those is how I kicked my soda habit.  Tea especially is great because you can get it in a variety of flavors, it has practically no calories, and it's rich in antioxidants.

tea's not a bad idea grunthor. tea! go tea!!! Tea-riffic!!!

I'm gonna try and find some good flavours of tea cos plain tea to me is a bit too bland without spoonfuls of sugar so maybe some kind of raspberry tea or apple tea. green tea was a disappointment. what are some of the more tasty kinds?
