I'm considering buying this game on Steam for $19.99 because I've heard good things about the original but I have a few questions:
1. Does anyone own this and would you recommend this?
2. Is it more RPG or more puzzle?
3. I've heard this game gets stupidly difficult near the end?
4. Did anyone play the original and what did you think?

it's not very good. I downloaded not this one but the previous one. I mean it's BEJEWELED dude, are you going to pay 20 dollars for multiplayer RPG bejeweled. it's also definitely more puzzle btw.

I have both, I'd sorta recommend the first but definitely not Galactrix. The only problem with the first is the AI cheats so fucking bad it can make you genuinely ragequit sometimes. It's twice as bad in Galactrix, but everything else is also just shitty, unpolished and frankly boring in this one.
2. Is it more RPG or more puzzle?
There's no RPG, unless you count 'you can level up' as being an RPG. I'm level 15 with 60 odd points in shield skill (there's only four skills) and it nets me so little bonuses it's practically negligible. Maybe 45 of those points didn't have any effect whatsoever, literally nothing increased from it. There's no other RPG elements.
3. I've heard this game gets stupidly difficult near the end?
It gets stupidly hard once you fight the first non-pirate ships (very early on). Anything with a repair hull/shield skill will be a fucking bitch unless you get mad lucky.
4. Did anyone play the original and what did you think?
Yeah, see 1. It's better in every single way. Galactrix doesn't do A SINGLE THING better. Get the first one.

Also I don't normally agree with gamespot, but this review is pretty much spot on with it.
