Hey guys,
I've got into a band recently and the drummer loves hip hop but hasn't heard a lot of it (he was raised on metal). I'm making him a mix with hip hop/rap/r&b tracks with great drums and any suggestions are welcome!
Any rock/hip hop songs that are actually half decent are totally welcome as well. Even stuff like RatM since I haven't heard them in ages.
Tracks with drums that he could study and try to replay are better, but electronic stuff is good as well. A mix of both would be best. Different tempos and tracks with singers (or even samples for the hook) would be really useful as well.

I can't find the original song BUT
K'naan - Waving Flag. definitely listen to it (limewire etc)
heres the acoustic version sorry i couldnt find the original on youtube

The Roots - Rising Down
[mp3]http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/55151/14%20Rising%20Up%20(featuring%20Chrisett%20Mic.mp3[/mp3]
also this track has some really good drums but they're sampled and sliced
Dj Numark and Pomo - Melody
[mp3]http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/55151/01%20Melody.mp3[/mp3]
i'll try to find some more later if you want

Pharoahe Monch does it really well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxC4yV_IMf0 - push
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_r6j7Awx2g - got you
Jedi Mind Tricks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNITJsOrHr0
I can only find stuff with just rhythm drum beats no solo stuff or anything like that and it might be synthesis or something but it still sounds like a drum set to me.
-
Yeah this stuff is really good guys, I've lost all my music so anything is good since I'm drawing a blank! The Roots are definitely gonna feature prominently.
-
A lot of sage francis's stuff he did with AOI has nice drums on it.

Also DJ shadow is good for sampled drum stuff although idk if you specifically wanted something with rapping over it.

i cant give a specific example at the moment but 'a tribe called quest' might have some of what youre looking for fo sure.
-
It's hard to pinpoint exact ATCQ songs that have particularly great drums but they're all good songs for a non hip-hopper to hear if he wants to get into it so I'm just gonna burn him paths of rhythm.
-
you could probably just tell him to make a steady beat that you can rap to, if he listens to anything other then metal he should get that and then work from there.
But yeah I never liked hip hop and just got into it (thanks to GWs) and I love a bunch of it alot. I even want to learn some flow so I can start making my own rap beats and stuff, it'll take alot of work for this white boy tho.
-
Why use a drummer to play rap/hip-hop when you could just make the beats on a drum machine or computer-engineer it? I mean, the rhythm hardly ever changes and it doesn't take much talent.
-
hey thats a hilarious sig youve got there thehuntersmetal

The only music that takes talent is really fast and technical stuff huh

I never said that. I said that genres like rap really don't require an experienced percussionist/drummer when you could just loop the same beats over and over again for you to talk through. Every other genre such as jazz, blues, country, and rock obviously require talents of a real percussionist/drummer since those forms of music don't always play the same musical rhythm over and over again in any song. That is why these genres are more distinctive and more deserving the aid of percussionists/drummers than rap.
-
try madlib/quasimoto/madvillain. they're all his projects and he uses a sloppy style.
even if it doesn't help, listen to this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPVAyoJc91k. drums are pretty sick here.
also, try "enter the wu-tang", their first album. the beats are simple, but they were a blueprint for alot of hip hoppers.
-
oh hey, try GALACTIC! I just remembered they were a jam band first. get that The Corner song because it has gift of gab not totally sucking and he has an absurd verse where he raps like 30 lines without taking a breath.
-

the fuck are you doing, that's not what he said at all. how many rap groups even play with a drummer man. I will grant there's a good chance THE HUNTER'S METAL is coming from a place neither of us would agree with but he's not wrong. live bands are far from necessary in hiphop, and imho you can do a bit more cooler stuff with two turntables than with drums as far as hiphop goes.
now ptizzle did say R&Bish tracks too which changes things but he's not wrong.
sig is kind of bad tho...
-
his name is 'the hunters metal', i think its pretty fair to assume how far his open mindedness in terms of music goes! even how he says this:
I never said that. I said that genres like rap really don't require an experienced percussionist/drummer when you could just loop the same beats over and over again for you to talk through
LOOPING THE SAME BEATS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO TALK THROUGH
-
or it could be something from an RPG??? face it ya blew it! rap drumming does not take much talent at all. beat making does but the basic ba-dum-tish can be done by anyone.
-
the drumming doesn't but i bet he thinks the same about beat making dude
read his post over
firstly re-read my post where he calls it "talking through repetitive beats"
and then there's this huge generalization:
Every other genre such as jazz, blues, country, and rock obviously require talents of a real percussionist/drummer since those forms of music don't always play the same musical rhythm over and over again in any song.
-
sounds pretty ignorant to me steel!
apologize to me
-
you're twisting this shit around! he just said something i thought immediately on reading this topic; his drummer will probably get hella bored since most straight DRUM BEATS are by necessity repetitive and easy! if they were long and complex you could not rap over them.
you're drawing a parallel between beats and drums which he did not make.
it's almost certain he's coming from a dumb place but maybe let him hang himself with better rope than "so u only like technical skill".
-
or don't try to hang him at all! this forum would be a lot better if everyone was not obsessed with "getting" the next person in line. I know I am guilty of this sometimes but it's still awful.
-

ill give you that one, its the forum as a whole even if he is coming from a dumb mindset. but my original point was more that he is obviously a little bit ignorant about this stuff!!!
-
This is so fucking stupid. My name DOES contain "metal" on it because it's my favorite kind of music (not the stupid trendy modern shit, I go as far back as Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath/Judas Priest on metal), and also, I'm a drummer aswell. From my perspective, most rap/hip-hop drummers hardly even do much other than repeatedly play on the hi-hat and snare. And yet, they have like 3-4 rack toms that they only use ONCE or TWICE each performance, or just never at all. I've seen them play;and they sounded like amateurs who are messing around on $$$ worth of a drumset with less than 2 months of experience. Even their "bassists" aren't that great, or just show no distinction of style.
it's almost certain he's coming from a dumb place but maybe let him hang himself with better rope than "so u only like technical skill".
WTF is with this "hanging" crap? I'm not emotional as you'd expect me to be. I myself live a very calm and peaceful life. And you know that rap pretty much loops for 1-3 black/white-wannabe-black peoples to try and make every single verse rhyme as fast as you can. Wow. That is SO musical. Hey, I guess it's okay to write out your lyrics on the back of your dog-chewed failed math worksheet. Just saying.
You may not agree with me, but atleast respect my point of views. I still do enjoy other music, but I'd be insulted to listen to n***** opera and pass it off as "music". Anything computer-generated is done by people who are not musically talented.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!
-
this is what i predicted steel
he actually said
nigger opera
and he thinks rap is about rhyming as fast as possible
-
but I'd be insulted to listen to n***** opera and pass it off as "music"
I am serious, kill yourself. go do it. then come and post.
-
name change to N***** Opera please
-
Anything computer-generated is done by people who are not musically talented.
-
get f****** steve reich...brian eno more like brian emo.
-
NIGGER OPERA though. why did he asterisk it? why? heh they can't warn me if I hide it...you n***** f****
you should probably ban him as otherwise this is going to turn into a real awful topic real fast.
-
i even gave the stupid fuck an out with "the drums aren't usually complex, the beat is" and he goes and says NIGGER OPERA. christ you do a dumbass a favor, don't be surprised if he just shits in his mouth and calls it chocolate.
-
ahahahahahahaha
holy fucking shit
not the stupid trendy modern shit, I go as far back as Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath/Judas Priest on metal
dude how old are you. wait I'll just drop one letter right here and censor the rest its not nearly as bad. You an idiot dog
-
Nah I want him to hang around for a bit and have fun. He doesn't deserve a ban just yet... but itll come.
Man I have a 6th sense predicting this shit.
lets dissect his post
1) rap is about rhyming as FAST as possible
2) nigger opera
3) misunderstood your hanging post
4)only people who want to be "gangsta tryhards" listen to it
5) anything music that involves a computer doesn't take talent, what about the production of the bands he likes hahah!
-
You were doing so well thehuntersmetal. :(
Afura you were still being dumb before he posted that though.
-
I sincerely apologize for being racist. There, it's been said. But you're picking on me for no valid reason, just because you have mod powers and I don't, so you assume it's okay to use this privilege to bash on people for freedom of speech/opinion that you don't seem to agree with? I feel certain that I am not the only person who doesn't like rap, and rap is also bashed frequently by other sorts of music fans, not just rock/metal. Afura, you're being a moron by degrading me on this site, and you're the one who brought it up first.
I didn't do anything wrong to any of you or anyone else here before you brought this dispute up, so I don't see why I deserved to be bashed for my first post at this thread? It was simply how I felt, as a musician, on rap.
dude how old are you.
If my age is that questionable to the likes of you, then how come I am using proper capitalization and punctuation, whereas you seem to lack in that post of yours?
Why ban me just because I was being a racist twice (and I apologized for both)? Otherwise, I wasn't spamming, trolling, or advertising to some random porn site at all (which are more common reasons to ban people for). You'd just ban me because you're throwing shit at me, and I'm only defending myself.
Go ahead and ban me if that's what you want;that would just prove that the majority of GWorld moderators are idiots who can't do their jobs right and be more humane. And also, seriously, renaming this thread by my name to degrade me? You really need to grow some balls and respect people's opinions.
-
i can hear the storm brewing ...
-
Well, GW is pretty harsh on racism and seriously what you said about rap and computer-generated music was very ignorant and not true. It's just that a lot of stereotypical metal and prog fans constantly say IF IT DOESN'T HAVE A REAL INSTRUMENT IT'S NOT MUSIC AND DOESN'T TAKE TALENT and that's so wrong. I wish people didn't say stupid uneducated comments like that. It's your opinion but it can still be wrong and dumb. Anyway, you apologized about the racist remark and that's cool but you should still realize that rap is music like any other and it requires another kind of talent. Your favorite metal artists would make poor rappers!
now lets all hold hands together..
now it's afura's turn to apologize! you were being dumb how about you admit that instead of going on about your sixth sense :welp:
-
also lack of capitalizing and punctuation is common on gw it's a thing we have going on here it doesn't mean people don't know how to do it because i assure you they do
-
Even though I may not agree with what you said about rap, it's no use to argue since it's hard for us to agree on the same thing about rap. It's only going to lure more flaming, and I'm sure neither of us want that anymore. I end this dispute in peace and (musical) harmony. :)
I'm glad that this argument is over. But I'd mighty appreciate it if this thread title was to be renamed back to its original, and not about myself.
-
hmm i said ban when i meant lock.
regardless protect ya neck.
-
I sure as hell aint apologizing ds, if I was wrong about him I would have but I have nothing to feel sorry about otherwise. I'll lock this thread but I think thehuntersmetal is missing the point, I don't even care if you don't like hiphop it's more that you are obviously pretty close minded with your racism and musical generalizations. I'm not going to try pretend holding secret racial prejudice is okay just because you apologized at the time.
