The league will do a live draft March 29th at 5pm EST.   We'll be using the same settings as last year, unless anyone has an objection to something.

If you've never played before and have questions, just post them here.  I'll answer whatever questions you have.

Edit: Make sure you post the name of your team after signing up.

I see you left out the most important stats out: Scrap Factor, GRiT3, and H.U.S.T.L.E.

No matter. The Hustle Fanatics love a good challenge.

you should have used your referral link because i actually stumbled onto this post last week and joined this game. guess you didn't want them free points...............

also yeah this game is pretty crappy but it's a nice idea and doesn't require much time to play. i do like how it is an adequate simulation of WORTHLESSNESS AND UNEMPLOYMENT AND FAILURE but that's only because there's no safety net at all and you need to just BOTHER OTHER PLAYERS to get anywhere in the game. i'll probably keep playing this though, because it's barely intrusive enough to be a time-waster. what's your team anyway? i have a third baseman and a right fielder both almost to level 2 if you guys have ZERO TALENT SLOP or cpu players sitting around that need to be replaced.

this is a much better text-based baseball game btw (http://www.simdynasty.com/index.jsp?refer=Hundley). a lot less sitting around waiting involved and a lot more stuff to mess around with. the pace is a lot better too. you control an entire organization and the free leagues simulate three games a day.

ps if anybody signs up for mmo baseball use this link (http://www.mmobaseball.com/createaccount.aspx?ref=9685) so i can get me some points
Title: GW Fantasy Baseball League 2009.
Post by: Randy Moist on June 30, 2009, 11:00:11 pm
Yea I wasn't thinking!!!! Forgot referrals are a necessity to get free points.

Basically I haven't played a game yet but the guy running our team just dumped me some extra money and seems pretty ok. He also just bought another team that isn't loaded with goons yet so I can probably get traded there and get you guys spots too (noz has a guy I think?). Post your player link if you wanna do that. I new season is suppose to start soon, heads up

I think the nice thing about it is it takes 2 seconds to pick what to train and I bet during the games you do even less. But I imagine in  a year people will be making players for high school teams and desperately hoping their guy makes it to a college or Canadian Semi-proAAAAAAA team and almost nobody touches the 'majors'. I bet I strikeout every plate appearance in my debut and never make it anywhere.

I'll check out Sim  Dynasty for sure. It definitely looks neat and the pacing sounds good. It's probably more along the lines of what I want anyway

i made two accounts with a player on each. i hope they don't care about multi-accounts, but it doesn't seem like the sort of game where anybody can gain some sort of unfair advantage with it unless they're using it to cheat the points system(which i didn't do)

http://www.mmobaseball.com/myplayer.aspx?id=34335
http://www.mmobaseball.com/myplayer.aspx?id=34338

i might keep Wilkenns where he is now because the guy who owns the team i'm on is pretty nice and gave me some leveling up money. also he said he may end up having a utility outfielder spot open for next season and said i could have it if his guy fell through. but i'd be dumb to turn down a starting role if your guy has one available. manto, however, doesn't have a team lined up at all(the team i'm on is just helping me level up as well) and i'd like to get him a good gig somewhere. i've almost got both of these guys to level 2, so they may actually be vaguely serviceable by the time the next season rolls around. i kinda dig this game enough to dump the ENORMOUS REQUIRED SUM of fifteen minutes a day into it, so i probably won't be going inactive to piss off your owner.

yeah it'd be great if you could help out. bugging perfect strangers for a spot on their roster is a bit annoying.

also what is your character's link?

Hahaha, I'm a shit head! All the roster spots on his teams are filled! I shouldn't of opened my mouth, sorry

Right now my guy (http://www.mmobaseball.com/myplayer.aspx?id=34228) and Manto are both in the same league (different conferences though). That's something I guess? I'll try and keep my eyes open if anyone goes inactive or there's a spot open. It seems like getting everyone on the same team is going to be really difficult!!

Also I really like Sim Dynasty. I picked up some team and spent the night fucking with lineups and letting go of AAAA schmucks (heh). I'm on a 2 game winning streak YES!!! The only thing is it is really difficult to get a feel for how my guys compare with the rest of the league. The game also seems to value some weird stuff with the mentoring but I'm not entirely sure I get that part yet to begin with. I'm pretty much ignoring defense for now too

I find it odd that Sim Dynasty has no kind of plate discipline rating whatsoever. Only contact and power.

it's no big deal about not finding me a team. i actually found both of my players really good gigs. manto is the #5 hitter for some decent semi-pro A team, and wilkenns is the utility outfielder/backup first basemen for an extremely good playoff-caliber semi pro team. i'm pretty happy with both spots, particularly wilkenns' team, so it's really no big deal.

in semi-unrelated news i also found out about a football equivalent of mmobaseball called goal line blitz (http://goallineblitz.com/game/signup.pl?ref=33706521) which is really the exact same thing as mmobaseball but quite a bit older, so they've had a lot more time to perfect things. it's a pretty slick game, really. i suspect it's made by the same people who did mmobaseball or was a major inspiration for it, because the way the game works is fundamentally similar. actually the major difference is that training isn't time-based but done with points you get every day, so it's even less intrusive than mmobaseball is. the points carry over so you can really just check up on your player once a week and not fall behind. also the free agent/drafting system actually works, so it's MUCH easier to get an immediate foothold in the game. idk if this is old news to you guys, but it's pretty cool. if you like mmobaseball and american football, you'll definitely like this game.

ps yeah i love the hell out of sim dynasty. glad you like it. eventually i'm probably going to do a paid league at some point, mainly due to the fact that I already have the equivalent of a few seasons earned through their points system. let me know if you ever like the game enough to do that.

Glad to hear because I was kicking myself for offering something I didn't really control.

Yea I've heard about Goal Line Blitz and will definitely make a character sometime. I like sports *grins* but yea there isn't a good reason not to play especially if it actually takes less time than mmobaseball

Sim Dynasty is great but I had like a 1-9 streak and finished the season pretty poorly. I also can't get a decent trade started because nobody else is active. But yea I'd play in a legit league though I dunno it mostly depends on the cost

yeah you can actually check it once every couple days without missing much of anything. you get two training points a night and they stack up to 14. training costs either 2 or 5 points each time and has some extra functions that mmobaseball doesn't have.

no reason not to try it, really. it's really identical to mmobaseball in the way the game works. not sure if the community around it sucks though, but the game itself is good.

just remember to use my referral link (http://goallineblitz.com/game/signup.pl?ref=33706521) so i can buy walter matthau (http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1563264) GOLD CHAINS :)

also HAHAHA i just noticed that ase joined with my referral link and made the linebacker BRUCE GENITALS (http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1563897). things are right with the universe for now...

i always look at the last login date of the team before trying to make a trade. if the team has been inactive for more than a few days i don't even bother. i only bother with the guys who actually check their team daily, but even that doesn't always work. usually there will be some active team letting some excellent player rot because of a positional logjam.

also a great trick is to trade away guys that are 39+  years old for younger developmental types. in my last season i traded a borderline contender a 39 year old starter who retired weeks later for a borderline C+/B- pitcher that ended up being my number 3 starter after just a few weeks of 5 point training in the minors. i think the other team got about 4 starts out of that pitcher, while the guy i got became excellent and won me a few games in the playoffs the following season. most people who play this game are a little slow and a lot like every mets general manager ever and will go WOW WOW WOW A B FOR A B- I CANNOT REFUSE even if the B is a guy about to retire and the B- player is about to become a B.

i'll let you know if i join a paid league, but i believe it's pretty expensive if you don't have a lot of dynasty points to put towards it. i already have like $15 worth of points from my playing the game on and off for a year or two so the first league i join will be pretty cheap.

But yes, please join Goal Line Blitz (http://goallineblitz.com/game/signup.pl?ref=33772343). I am on D League #30 (Eastern Conference) - The Pittsburgh Matadors. Feel free to join my team if you get it in your contract offers.

yeah i am on:
d14 - columbus pirates
d16 - omaha goons

it's nearly impossible to deliberately get on a particular developmental team though, but it's something to watch out for. maybe we can get on the same team later on when our rookie contracts are up.

Alright I just joined off your referral link. It looks like I should go for a position with really high demand, right? I'm finally gonna realize my dream of being a 2nd string defensive end in Des Moines Iowa!!! Also what stats are most valuable/absolute musts?

As for Sim Dynasty, that's a good point about checking activity for trades. Also since my league is only 3 years or whatever (I think this is how the free one works?) and a season has already come to pass, my idea was to hold on to my solid veterans (B+ or higher) who are producing and fill the other holes through trading off lots of young talent and draft picks. I mean, I've got a few young guys in the minors that I'm loading with coaching points but nobody less than a C+ and I've got pretty specific plans for them (one guy was in the rotation when I started and I decided to send him down until the final season and just train him like crazy) but other than that with no real future for my team better to win now, right? I dunno is this strategy actually a good idea?

Also one last question, does a player's success in the major impact their future results? What I mean is, I've got a player or two who have worst stats than their counterparts but are out playing them significantly. So does the historical success of the worst player count more than the raw abilities of the other guy? Some portion of it has to be luck I guess but it's weird seeing a B- guy out hitting a B+ dude.

Slightly on topic, I'm gonna get some guff for this but fantasy baseball kinda sucks! I'm winning this league but RBI's Wins and Saves are so arbitrary I could just as easily be losing!

after running out of steroid money in mmobaseball i went and found another similar baseball player simulation game called diy-sports that ACTUALLY WORKS. you actually get contracts from cpu teams immediately and with the ridiculous amounts of shitty cpu players, your guy will put up really good numbers right off the bat. the cpu/human team ratio is ridiculous so it's really easy to get on a good team. i'm in the majors right now with the minnesota twins even though i haven't even hit level 2 yet.

a plus/minus is that you pretty much just set your auto training up and walk away, letting your player do his thing. i don't really know if this is a bad thing or not. mmobaseball forces you to check in every once in a while to set up your training but it's pretty superficial and has the same function. you can go idle in this game and your guy still continues training as far as i can tell. they structure the training such that it's better if you keep an eye on it(you lose points in other areas by focusing on one area all the time) but it's not critical like mmobaseball that requires you to come back a couple times every day.

anyway, here is the link (http://www.diy-sports.com/?refId=633)* if you guys are at all interested in this.(enter my username hundley in the referral section of the signup page if you want to be a nice guy)

i feel like a huge dick posting my fourth referral link but whatever. i'm a box score junkie anyway and i've been into these dumb sports simulation games lately as a fun little time-waster. i'm just glad i broke my horrible baseball mogul addiction.

*also they do not make this terribly clear but DO NOT buy your player a bat. it costs credits which could be used to buy a second player. other pieces of equipment you use game dollars, but bats are an exception apparently. i have no fucking idea what my player is using to hit but it appears to be working.

yeah it's really ridiculous. i guess they're hoping for the game to really catch on, but it would have felt a little more sensible to start with half that amount and expand later depending on demand. it's strange because mmobaseball does it wrong with too few teams and the cpu teams being absolute shit, but this game does it wrong with way too many cpu teams.

i was about to express OUTRAGE at victorino getting the starting center field starting nod with beltran out, but the national league is really weak in outfielders this year, particularly center fielders. the only nl outfielders having strong seasons that got left off the team were matt kemp and adam dunn. a couple of his pitching choices and omissions were a bit wonky(zach duke? do you really take two pirates to the all-star game?) but i think manuel did a good job getting a fair spread of players. his biggest snub was probably sandoval, but i'm sure he'll have the chance to make many more all-star games in the future.

i genuinely don't understand how carlos pena and his .228 batting average made it over branyan, though. apart from his home runs, pena hasn't really been all that great since his breakout season in 2009. AND joe maddon gave the nod to roy halladay as the al starter over zach greinke due to halladay's "body of work", which should have no factor in making choices for the all-star game. it's like joe maddon doesn't fucking understand how the all-star game is supposed to work. he made all kinds of shitty choices for his roster. four third basemen but just two shortstops and second basemen? wakefield and buehrle over blackburn and weaver?

the all-star game would be a lot better if it was handled with a league-wide coach poll rather than just letting the manager and fans decide it all.

not like i ever really have a lot of interest in the all-star game anyway. i mainly wanted to rag on joe maddon, the luckiest man in baseball.

Happy Ghoal-a-days!!!

With the Twin's losses finally wearing off I can start thinking about baseball again. MMObaseball is pretty bland and dominating SimDYnasty free leagues sucks because no matter how complete my team is I get swept in the WS.

I always kinda wanted to try What If Sports (hardball Dynasty) and now seems like a good time to hop into a Something Awful league (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3216061&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1) because 1) They are starting a brand new league that is private (I guess a public league will have a bunch of people trying to fleece you in every trade) 2) The baseball posters there are really nice/helpful and want new people to join.

It costs real money though (though $16 covers 3 months) and it looks like it can be a big time commitment. Give the thread (PM me if you can't read it and I'll sure my SA account details) and the site (http://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Main/) a look and hey maybe it'll catch your eye too!

that man is the ruination of all things good in the universe :(
Including Adam Eaton! (He stabbed himself in the gut once, opening a dvd). The whole Orioles rotation going into this year though was somewhat of a shit show
