Anybody remember the long thread I made ages ago about college? I said some shit about how I was worried I wouldn't get in anywhere etc etc. My grades sucked and my high school counselor looked me straight in the eye and said "you're not going to get into any of these colleges." Way to shoot down a guy's spirit, you jerk.
But guess what. I got into a great college that I've made the decision to go to next year. The University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. :bravo:
So here's the problem. Total tuition will be around $20,000 (that's social expenses, books, room and board etc included). That's a lot of bones. The cost for classes isn't that enormous, around $7000 or $8000. But they get you with room and board being the same price, therefore doubling your costs. Freshman are required to live on campus.
I've got a slightly complicated family finance situation. My parents divorced. My mother got remarried and moved to a different city, while still having custody of me. I live 20 miles away with my grandparents (who are NOT my legal guardians). I'm trying to fill out a FAFSA (financial aid from the federal government). You have to include all your parents' tax information for the year along with their networth, monthly payment shit, etc. All kinds of bullshit. This takes 4+ weeks to do. The problem? The priority deadline is APRIL 1.
Just filling it out is hell. I have to figure out whose tax info I'm supposed to use and get all these damn papers from people. My father (birth father, not step-father) claims me on his 2008 tax returns. So I figure I need to use his shit, which only makes things better. He makes around $9,000 a year. Hell, I could make that much in a year. Since he makes so damn little the government will give me more money.
All this becomes fucking pointless if UT won't accept my completed FAFSA after April 1. I'm hoping they still will. I've emailed them about my problem and haven't heard back yet. If I can't go to college next year because I can't afford it my spirits will be crushed into dust. I'll have to take a year off and try again next year. If I do that I'll have to say an extremely difficult goodbye to my girlfriend. She's going there. It's 3 hours away, so I couldn't see her regularly. I think that's my worst fear. Other than that I'll have to spend another year with my grandparents, which isn't an enjoyable thing. That is unless I get an apartment, but I have no money, can't find a job, and don't even turn 18 until September.
There you have it. I hope I'm not fucked. Discuss. Bitch. Advise.
-
It does not take a month to fill out a FAFSA, even with your situation. Two weeks should be long enough to fill it out.
-
wait if your parents don't declare you their info doesn't matter, and if they're not legal guardians, you're fine.
oh wait your grandparents are.
regardless this sounds like not much of a problem.
-
it took me less than a day to fill out the fafsa every time I've done it, even with split up parents it can't take you four weeks.
-
Well my advice would be to bust ass and finish that FASFA as soon as possible(within the week). Hop on a bus or drive to mom's and sit down with her to do it. After that: get a student loan, a job that can work around your school hours, avoid meal plans and cook for yourself(real food).
Keeping costs down is very easy, you won't spend 20 grand during your freshman year if you're keeping yourself busy enough.
-
I know it won't take 4 weeks to fill it out. Yeah, I can surely have that finished within the week. But apparently the processing time is 4 weeks. That's what I'm worried about. AND I haven't even received my electronic PIN yet.
-
Also here's a college tip: first day you get there, open your door and blast some Asher Roth out your dorm you'll make so many friends
-
Memorize all the words to "I love college" and you too may have this one chick completely naked
-
wait if your parents don't declare you their info doesn't matter, and if they're not legal guardians, you're fine.

Well no, my grandparents have nothing to do with it. My dad claims me as a dependent on his 2008 tax returns. I don't know if that makes him a legal guardian to me or what.

if he claims you, use his info
-
The fasfa is a federal form so I think they go by taxes
-
if he claims you, use his info
Yeah, that's what I'm doin'. I guess what I'm gonna have to do is call him up and make plans to bring my laptop and sit down with him and fill it out together. Which will be pretty akward because I haven't had a conversation with my father in about 5 months.
Also thanks for the college advice, I'll use it

Replace your entire wardrobe with polo shirts, cargo shorts, and sandals.
Also over the summer learn wonderwall and the first half of every jack johnson song on acoustic guitar
-
In order to minimize foam, put a thin layer of butter or crisco on the inside of the funnel of your beerbong
-
stop it dietcoke im making that thread in a few months..
-
Who cares how long the processing time is? It doesn't affect you. As long as you submit the forms electronically by the deadline, you should be good. Yeah, you still have to make copies of your 1040 and W-2 and non-custodial parent shit and mail it to them, but I think as long as you send it the actual e-form by the deadline, you're good to go. You can always bullshit stuff to best of your knowledge and then submit a "Correction FAFSA" as soon as you can with the REAL info.
-
man cancer stopped me from finishing the CPC. the last one was going to be a thread of just general shit. oh well. cancer!

no shit on my first day of university, a guy in my house decked out in a polo shirt, cargo shorts and sandles busted out his trusty acoustic and treated us to some "tooodaaay is gonna be the daaaay....". How are things the same EVERYWHERE?

My parents are divorced too you don't need to use both parents' income. USE THE LOWER INCOME! This is REGARDLESS of whoever claims you. Call if you want to verify this.
I got a 0000000 EFC with FAFSA. Works me wonders.
EDIT:
It doesn't take 4+ weeks. Took me about a night. Get your dad's tax returns, and use that. You have enough time. Are you filling out any extraneous papers? Because when I took the work to my girlfriend's mom (she works for the school district), she pretty much said some of that paperwork is irrelevant and just had me fill out the online application.

Shit what you had to send in a follow up verification form? Didn't see that anywhere. Where does it say that? Also, shouldn't they have access to that information anyway?
By the way, my mom makes around 26 grand a year, and I got 0 EFC (Estimated Family Contribution), which is a-frickin-awesome. With your dad making 9, there's no way in hell you won't get money. Congratulations on being poor!
EDIT:
Congratulations on your acceptance, by the way. I got accepted into mine (UCSD), too, and after FAFSA it's about 8 grand a year. I need information on loans, etc. Also, do you guys think it's worth it? I think the FAFSA can get me community college for free, and my state has a 'tag' system which pretty much grants me a spot in the CSU and UC schools after I finish community college...which would save me money. Should I do that instead, or is there any pressing reason for me to go straight up to a university?
-
Anyone know how much money you can get?
The college that I'm going to is $30,750 a year for the fixed rate tuition plan (price won't go up in the future), and I get $19000 from the school per year as a scholarship. My EFC is 0 and I'm planning to mooch off my parents unless I find a really cheap place to live.
-
go to community college, juris. it's cheaper and iirc you wanted to get into ucla right? you'd have a better chance of getting in after acing a couple years of community college i bet.
-
man that would be so amazing to be able to go to UCLA
I wish I was a resident of the state of California so I could have free tuition to an awesome school
-
I was thinking it was a better idea, too. I still need to do more research though -- if I can get into UCSD without having to pay off loans when I'm 40, it might be doable. I still can't decide whether it's worth it though. Yeah, I'm leaning towards community college.
Yup, UCLA's up there on my list -- I've got a lot of friends there. I still have to see the campus and everything (god I HATE the drive up there). I'm also considering Berkeley. Unfortunately they're both not going to release acceptance/rejection decisions till the end of the month. I'm glad I got into UCSD though, because I know the place better, and it's much closer to family. As much as I want to get the hell away, it's good to have this to fall back on.
As for RedScythe's question, I can't give you the exact number but if I remember correctly FAFSA got me 5 grand. They're updating the finance report just now so I can't really check. It might depend on the school, by the way, because for some reason the SAR I got from the FAFSA report doesn't give me an exact number, just my EFC.
-
Yeah, I think I'm going to contact the school because I only get an EFC as well. The school's site says to login and check on their site but they don't have any information. It's unfortunately a really crappy school but its the only one out of 4 I applied to. And I got rejected from an honors program at another school so I decided to just go to the one that I have a scholarship for and that's close to home.
-
Can I get a HOLLA from my brothers and sisters who did/are doing their first two years at a jr college!!!!???
:( kinda bummed i missed out on the whole dorm "YEAH IM IN FUCKIN COLLEGE" thing... but I wouldn't be the bitter shithead i am today if i did all that instead of work awful jobs and encounter so many roller bags outside of an airport
(go to live at a university and have fun if you can, don't go to community college)
-
Is the experience worth it?
@RedScythes: Good call. Heh. Go where the money is.

I'm going to Rochester Institute of Technology for computer science but I want to go to NYU for film. Fucking portfolio for NYU Tisch is a killer, but the RIT deadline came up and I STILL haven't heard from NYU.
What should I do??? I h8 computers
-
it took me a few hours to fill out the fafsa? also if they say the deadline is april 1, that means you have to turn it in by april 1, not that you have to turn it in so that after 3 weeks of processing it'll be april 1.

:) My girlfriend applied there (I think she got in). Big deaf community up in Rochester, and I was about to do that too -- except she decided to stay in California because she gets benefits from the school district here. I actually applied halfassedly to Rochester University because my debate coach had some 'connections' up there (used to be a state superior court judge for NY). But then I looked at that $50,000 fee and went "FUCK NO." Didn't turn in the rest of my application. That, and I'd freeze my ass off up in NY.
But yeah, I don't know. You applied to both places already, right? I'm sure they're sending soon.
-

I'm already IN and GOING to RIT so.................
I just want to know what possibilities I have to do movie shit and not waste a year of computer science.

i would agree with this buuuuut when i was looking into the UC system schools, basically every source said that UCSD had a weak social life. like, apparently it was just a bunch of commuters or something? and also ULTRA SERIOUS ASIAN KIDS who did not really have much in the way of social lives. and then everyone went home on the weekends. these are probably exaggerations to some extent but again, since literally everything i heard about the social experience said this, i don't think it's too far off. the COLLEGE EXPERIENCE thing is great and all but it only applies if you go to a school that's good for it. i don't think it's anything to write home about if you're going to a school of commuters/people who go home on the weekends who all take studying really seriously or w/e.
-
why would you sign up and commit to something you hate?

ill probably be letting Colorado University at Boulder know im enrolling there tomorrow.
anyone here have opinions on the school/know people who attended anything like that. i'm looking forward to it, it's a good school.

for RIT i signed up for film first choice, 2nd computer science, they took me for computer science. Also outside pressure told me not to wait and do that computer shit.

why would you pick computer science for your second choice if you hate it???

That's what I've heard, too. Now that I think of it, UCSD doesn't really have that much going on. The most I've seen it do was the Winter Game Fest a few months ago, and seriously? (not to offend our hardcore gamer friends) but not exactly the group I'm looking for. Heh. Yeah, I probably know a few of those crazy asians. They're pretty lame. You make a good point about the commute, btw. Because I live so close, it's be pretty stupid for me NOT to, but nothing really justifies going in the first place if I can just go to Palomar community college or something. UCLA's supposed to be good socially, and I got into UCSB, which is supposed to be a big party school. I dunno. I have a pretty strong relationship with my girlfriend and I know it's gonna get in the way somewhat of my 'social life' (women are time-suckers), so I figure I might as well be a hermit and just work on that general ed in community college, and save up money.
But that sounds so fricking BORING
AAAGH
-
well if UCSD is such a boring school, why even apply for it?
-
i see. as a good upstanding AzN american you had to major in something to do with computers.

you think its a joke but this is seriously a Indian/Asian/"THOSE" man's burden like fuck.
sredni just tells people he's an art major and they don't ever talk to him again.

dude i'm married and still manage to get shitfaced on weekends and DUDE-OUT WITH MY BROS on throughout the week... how much time are you spending with your girlfriend that you can't have a social life???

no big loss, who'd want to talk to someone who'd act like that if it were true anyway???
-
wait would you be commuting to ucsd? definitely go to community college then! it is practically the same thing at that point. what joe said only applies when you're living in some dorm and doing stupid college kid shit. if you're just going to commute there along with the rest of the serious asian students who commute and then go straight home at night/on the weekends then you will probably not really MISS much by going to a community college for a couple years. plus, let's think of the benefits:
-save you (your parents) a ton of money
-get much better grades because community college is for retards, so getting into a better school than ucsd after your first couple years should be easy
-less stress from schoolwork because see above
-more free time to do whatever the hell you want because again, less time spent doing schoolwork because getting straight As is easy as fuck.
i mean if you wanna go to ucsb and do the COLLEGE THING then do that but if you're choosing between ucsd and community college only then it seems pointless to pay more for the former when the experience is so similar. you'd probably find both really boring, in which case COWBOY UP or just go somewhere you think is fun!
-
:( the community college I went to had General Physics/Chemistry/Biology and Calculus series that were harder than the ones at the university i transferred to(it wasn't a bad school either!)
-
if you don't have to work in a job during your time in college (IE, scholarships) or your time commitment is minimal and the job is fun/easy (work study!), it's worth it to move onto a campus. it is a lot of fun and it is the only time during your entire life that you will have that amount of free time, access to friends/activities/girls/parties/great facilities, and just general fun, unless you are rich.
it is really nice to be able to just GO OUT WHENEVER and talk to people too!!
but if you're commuting than there's really no difference between community colleges and a 'real' school, and frankly a lot of community colleges are just as good if not better than a lot of universities.
-
:( the community college I went to had General Physics/Chemistry/Biology and Calculus series that were harder than the ones at the university i transferred to(it wasn't a bad school either!)
wow really? i guess it depends on the school but ucsd is supposed to be pretty good so i assumed whatever random local community college he'd go to would be easier. if i went to a uni that was easier than my school right now (it's even supposed to be a pretty good community college) then i would probably die of relief. i am prepping for it being a LUDICROUS JUMP IN DIFFICULTY tho.
it's not so much a quality of education thing, though. i have a lot of good profs who teach at much nicer/more expensive private schools in the area. it is more about them having to cater to really dumb people. i've never been in a class that wasn't at least half full of really huge morons and the profs can't FAIL half the class so they have to make things really easy. i'm not complaining but maybe the difference was that your community college wasn't filled with as many dumb people as mine.
-
i've heard community colleges in california are a joke so things will probably be different for him down thurrrr
-
my community college is so ridiculously easy (ironically i just had to drop math. i had the flu a few weeks ago and missed almost an entire week of math classes and i got a 0 on a math test!! the lil faggot teacher wouldnt let me make it up for some reason (prolly cuz i had already missed tons in that class, but fuck him) so i dropped it. i dont want to mess my gpa up. . .)
but really tho its easy
-

this though for real. i have a pretty big feeling that half of my teachers are MUCH BETTER THAN THEY LET ON because the students are all so fucking dumb. no joke when i say this little asian girl asked me in my history class today if ww2 was the one with hitler in it!
-
well. . . was it???
-
she said that she thought the japanese were ww2 and the germans were ww1
she was kind of hot though so i didnt call her stupid
-
heh bareblack obama, such a gentleman.............................
-
btw if you are gonna indebt yourself be sure you study something that will help you pay back the loans. not just something that makes you a good conversationalist unless you want to go to grad school
-
just take a bunch of loans and never pay them back
-
Anyone know if taking a "gap year" is a good idea? I have about 6 grand saved up and I can probably work full time a few months to save up more and then do something interesting. (Visit other countries do some volunteer work and etc) I know volunteer work sounds dumb but I'd seriously be interested in helping out in South Asia because I've traveled around the region and people with illnesses/disabilities/etc have a really tough time. I know some organizations are popping up that help those kinds of people get aid and rights. I was thinking of doing work for those causes in the far future (after college), but I want to experience that kind of work first hand before going to college. Besides that I also wanted to explore some of my own interests like hiking or getting into something new like learning an instrument or some martial arts or something. I've read up on it and it seems most colleges will allow you to defer admission for a year. Has anyone taken a year off before college, and if so, how was it?

I guess it depends on your personality, but my guess is that you'd end up not doing any of these things. Why not go on to school and do these things during the summer? I'm pretty sure going to college will give you more opportunities to get involved with those types of programs anyway, I see tons of applications for these types of things all over campus. Going to college doesn't mean you'll never get to do these things again, if anything they give you more chances (you could take music or martial arts lessons THROUGH your college).
-
i think only like a quarter of people who take gap years end up going to college because they either quickly rack up debt or find themselves in positions where they really just can't make it part of their plan anymore.
-
I agree with that COMPLETELY. That's a big reason as to why I wouldn't want to take a year off. I probably just wouldn't feel it by next year.
Anyway, I just got an email back from Toledo. They say it will be fine if I miss the deadline, but to get it in as soon as I can. I'm making arrangements to get together with my dad this weekend so he can help me fill out the FAFSA. Now I just wish they'd hurry up and send me my damn PIN.
-

Well the thing is that most organizations that recruit people to go over to places like that and help out generally seek folks with some skills to offer and a college education. You just graduated highschool, how useful could you possibly be somewhere in south asia not knowing how to speak the local language and completely lacking any hospital/rehabilitation/policy experience? Maybe you could travel there on your own dime and probably find some place to volunteer at but that's a lot of money to piss away that you'll be missing sorely when you're a poor student.
just go and get your education, it's only 4 years, you can go chase dreams after that.
-
Yeah, the gap year seems like a bad idea. I sort of figured I was tired of school and really losing focus, so taking a gap year would help me regain some focus and figure out what I wanna do because I've seen so many people waste years going to college only to change majors several times or end up with a degree that isn't really useful or with a job/career they hate. But I like what Velfarre said about going to college and doing this kind of stuff at the same time, because chances are it'll be cheaper if its a program from the college.
Another question: how useful is college in terms of preparing you for getting a job/career?
I know high school was pretty useless because I forgot most of the things that I learned, and the only things that were retained were things that were used often. As for job skills, I got those almost completely from actual jobs and internships. Is it the same in college? Do you basically take meaningless classes to get a piece of paper and then get training when you actually land a career? I know you obviously need some of the classes but I feel like the majority of the things taught in the current education system are forgotten in the long run.
Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy some of those "meaningless" classes, it just seems like if they cut back on that, they could shorten the number of years you need to go to school/college and cut a lot of costs.
-
A lot of times the college degree shows an employer that you can stick to things. It means you could go there for the four years and keep up with the work and do a good job. So what if the classes are bullshit? You might think some work-based assignment is too. They want to know that you can still DO it. They don't want to bother training you if you're going to get bored of it and leave a few months later. By looking at them as meaningless classes and college as a place where you go get a piece of paper that qualifies you, you're looking at it the wrong and you're going to have a harder time getting through it.
-
Your taxes don't have to be done in order to fill out the FAFSA. As long as everyone has their W2's you're good to go.
-
how useful is college in terms of preparing you for getting a job/career?
Extremely useful if you take advantage of all the internship opportunities that are available. It also depends on your major.
If you sit around on your ass doing nothing but going to class, majoring in some bullshit like comparative literature, and step out into the workforce with nothing but a degree to your name then you'd have probably been better off skipping college, learning a trade and getting a library card.
-
ill probably be letting Colorado University at Boulder know im enrolling there tomorrow.
anyone here have opinions on the school/know people who attended anything like that. i'm looking forward to it, it's a good school.
Lucky ass! You will fucking love it up there. Both my parents went and i have a cousin that goes there now and everyone I know that goes there loves it. It's a really great school, and also, Boulder is one of the biggest party cities in the United States, if not the biggest.
What's funny is everyone thinks that, but Boulder is nothing compared to FoCo (Fort Collins) CSU baby!! That's where I wanna go. But I'm going to Metro State for my bachelors because I'm broke as a joke haha.
-

His best bet would be to save up money and go to law school or become a highschool teacher. Either way he's gonna have to kiss his soul goodbye.
If he's down for making a pact with satan he could go get his MBA along with countless divorced women in their late thirties and fire people for a living in an HR department

before i got into music i was considering majoring in international relations. what kind of jobs could you get with a bachelors in international relations???
-
or political science for that matter. it seems like a pretty useless field as far as jobs go unless youre gonna get a masters or a doctorate!!
-
I have a friend with a degree in international relations ryan and currently he works two jobs. Retail and waiter...
-
He'll make manager in no time!
-
I know a guy studying political science and he just loves to argue about politics, I hope he gets a job with FOX news or something

mba is the way to go

Just as long as you stay away from holy water

there are literally zero good degrees.
altho
go to law school or become a highschool teacher. Either way he's gonna have to kiss his soul goodbye.
law school sure but what's bad about highschool teacher?
-
Nothing, it is incredibly admirable. The problem is that being grossly underpaid and underappreciated your entire career tends to wear people down.
I know a girl who is wrapping up her education certificate working with a local highschool and a couple faculty members, in her words, "quarter-jokingly" told her to escape while she still can.
-
If I remember correctly, they said something to the tune of "You're young, healthy, and not a single gray hair on your head. You've got so much to lose."
-
Poor teachers man
-
poor righteous teachers...
-
I want to be that teacher who inspires a class of troubled inner city kids to exceed all expectations but then again I'd probably end up like samuel l jacksons character in 187 die in a game of russian roulette with a mexican kid who killed my girlfriends dog
-
i want to be a teacher
:(
-
highschool teaching is prolly alright if you teach in a fancy prep school,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.,....,,,..,,...,,.., the pay is utter shit but i suppose people would be more receptive than inner city children strugglin with more important things than gettin an A in stupid american history class
-
i studied in an out of the mill state school and i would never want to teach there ever
-
also when i was a kid i got into monthly fights long live mexican schools
-
more like edward james almost huh...
-
and the mexican education union is a fucking mafia and is completely integrated to the ruling party

im really thinking about teaching.
just a question: what is involved in eventually teaching at a college or uni. i know MORE COLLEGE, but what else? is this a stupid thing to aspire to? etc.
thanks

you'll have to write some amazing shit or go to school forever or both
or settle for community college

But I'm going to Metro State for my bachelors because I'm broke as a joke haha.
dude metro is chill. im assuming youll be living in the dorms there and theyre really nice. also i got into CSU but CU just fit me more
A JOKE FOR YOU:
what do cu kids and csu kids have in common?
they both got into csu

how dare you fuckers double and triple post in MY THREAD

marmot is just used to the modern lit topic
or maybe he always did this idk

They can't control it anymore

I live in Ohio aswell; UT isn't that great of a school, and the city its self isn't that great either, try not to get killed, stay away from bad neighborhoods etc.
-
i got accepted into an art college, university of minnesota-twin cities, and university of wisconsin-madison. i'm interested in studying animation.
i want to go to the art college because it has really good courses on animation but the art college is freaking expensive. the university of minnesota has very little on time based media at all and the university of wisconsin is the cheapest but the most useless for what i want to study.
so i need to find money fast if i want to go to the super cool art college. i already got an 8000$ scholarship from that place, but tuition is $29,400 and i don't know what i'll get from the fafsa form. what easy scholarships can i possibly get from the internet??
-
man you should study graphic design in a state school instead they teach you animation and you dont have the dichonomy of maybeeee ill find a job or ill starve under the weight of humongous student debt
-
oh my god. so upon doing a little research becoming a professor seems like an almost impossible task. so much work, so much money, so little chance you'll actually make it in the end.
jesus i don't think i've ever heard of such a daunting task in my entire life. i guess WHAT DID YOU EXPECT but still it's just a massive amount of effort. i still think ill go in day one to talk to someone at me uni about what it takes though.
note it's not the time or money or effort that's required, it's the very big possibility of coming out the other end with JACK SHIT to show for it. Sounds like the job competition is fucking intense after the PhD (which in itself sounds very difficult). I can't imagine doing that much work and coming out the other side with just your dick in your hand. what do you do from there with like 6 years worth of a history degree. teach at some top notch prep school i suppose.
fuuuuuuuuuck
-
and i bet it's ESPECIALLY true for the subjects i like the most (e.g. most liberal arts majors)
-
yeah thats why i might drop the whole academia idea and just go to med physics or somewhere where i can get boatloads of money without lifting a finger
-
see though id really really like to teach but the high school level is just... not what i have in mind.
-

I tell ya, it's true. With these budget cuts now's not a good time to be a teacher. Our district is supposed to cut 300 next year. That's bullfuckingshit because some of these teachers are awesome at what they do -- they just don't have tenure. And they're firing some of the tenure teachers, too. In my girlfriend's school they're thinking of letting go the TEACHERS FOR THE DISABLED KIDS. That's messed up. The only places with openings are like in Logan or Compton. Sure, you get a nice loan forgiveness plan. But I don't think I'd want to teach at a place where, I dunno, the kids might try to shoot at me. Hopefully though, the California economy will rebound and we won't have to axe education as we know it.
Anyway, sorry for the misinformation Vincey Poo -- I got 5 grand from FAFSA, not 17. I was counting the additional aid + stafford loans.
Yeah, fuck loans. I did a little research and the general term of the loan is for 10 years, around 150-200 bucks a month. I could send a kid to college myself if I could save that. I think I might do a subsidized Stafford loan for junior + senior year, and maybe get a Perkins loan for grad school. Maybe I might be able to refinance everything into a Perkins loan? I dunno though -- it'll probably exceed the cap they lend at. I'd really like to though, because that way, I can have 70% of it waived when I go off to the Peace Corps for 4 years. In the meantime, I'm thinking community college is best.
Now to convince my friends to stay with me and not get sucked into the ZOMFG 4 YEAR COLLEGES *DROOL* attitude.

are you serious?? cuz if they have the means don't put any sort of weird pressure on them dude, that would be a bit off

lol yeah Toledo looks like a pretty shitty ghetto town from what I've seen of it. Not that big of a difference from Springfield where I live now, anyway.
-
I'm quite joyfully looking at 8-10-infinite years of school. Wanting to be an History/Political Science Professor.
To compound matters, I'm classified independent, fresh off a wonderful 22,000k+ a year job. Now, I'm broke. I'm classified independent, so I don't get much from the Fafsa (which took me a whopping 15 minutes to fill out) and my GPA in high school was 2.7, so my chances of receiving Academic Merit scholarships are nil.
I plan on going to one school, upping my GPA to get into a better school. (IUP -> Pitt -> CMU if all goes according to plan.)
So yeah, broke. That's where I'm at. So, I feel your pain VinceP, haha.
-
What are you talking about? You get a lot more money if you're independent.
-

Most of them are sitting on the fence anyways, thinking about taking loans out. They hardly realize how much money this is. I'll just tell them my horror stories about loan default and maybe they'll come around. If I could convince just a few of them, I might be able to maintain something resembling a 'social life,' and not have to paint faces on volleyballs with my blood if they all left me behind. Nah, I won't keep them from their careers or anything -- I'm not that selfish. But I'm definitely going to tell them the cons of taking this money out now.

That depends on how much he makes. I'm surprised that FAFSA isn't giving him money at 22k though. Draak, go marry someone and have a couple dependents. With that income, you'd surely get financial aid!!!
-
Normally, I'd have thought so, too.
But evidently since I'm single with no dependents, I don't qualify for much of anything.
Nevermind.
My EFC is 7613.
I honestly have no clue what the hell that means.
Edit: I understand that it means I've been deemed able to spend $7,613 on school.
Which is suck, because I'm currently displaced so my income is... piss. But, if I save up for 7 months, I should be kosher, I suppose.
Or am I 100% wrong? lol
-
It's your expected family contribution which means you're not 'independent'. The EFC goes away if you either turn 24 before the schoolyear, join the military, have a kid, or get married.
http://www.finaid.org/calculators/dependency.phtml this is how to find out if you're independent

what dude??
"i won't keep them from their careers but i WILL say a bunch of things in order to try to talk them out of something that might be beneficial to them later on"
my parents both made their way through school (one as a nurse the other as a doctor, so we're talking a lot of school) on loans, and it took them forever to pay it off, but thanks to that they're living comfortably now instead of the poverty they grew up in
-
its not difficult to become a professor beasley
what is difficult is getting tenure, and especially in todays economic climate, it looks damn near impossible for anyone not working on supercomputers, engineering, higher math, business or economics (which is why the american university system sucks the dong. our humanities are grossly underfunded)
-
I'm gonna be a teacher. In a troubled inner city school, too. The whole deal. That's me.
edit:
where's my flippin avatar....

this makes me very sad. fuck any system where you're forced either into poverty or BUSINESS MAN who just supports said system.
this is really depressing to me. why oh why am i so naive.....

Well, what are the benefits of going to a 4-year, as opposed to taking advantage of the California TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) program -- which allows us to get rid of our general education for really cheap through community college and guarantees us a spot in any UC school? There's a good reason why I'm deciding not to go to a UC straight up myself -- because I don't think it's justified. I don't think I need to pay 10 years' worth of loans (I checked) when I could be saving the money up for a decent car and food. So if you have any arguments for going to 4-year colleges, I'd definitely take your advice because I'm still debating this. But I tell ya, I'm leaning heavily toward the side that sounds cheaper.
I think helping my friends understand the benefits of the TAG system will only help them make smarter decisions.
-
FAFSA = complete
with time to spare!
My EFC is 0, just like I thought.
-
Congratulations on being poor! Finally, it pays off.
-
no it doesnt
you're gonna have to pay those loans back at some point brother (with interest ho ho)
