Title: Post Your Desktop!
Post by: HybridZero on April 09, 2009, 04:29:44 am
So we used to have a post your desktop thread a long time ago, and I think it's high time for a new one. If you don't know what it is, basically you take a screenshot of your desktop and put it here! A lot of people enjoy customizing the way their desktop looks, and there are a lot of REALLY pretty desktops out there, so why not share them?

Some helpful guidelines:

If you're looking for a place to host your images, here are a few:
Anyway, I'll get the ball rolling:

OS: Windows XP
Visual Style: Ashen II (http://nevezen.deviantart.com/art/Ashen-II-73179002)
Wallpaper: Original (http://www.danlabute.com/stuff/rainbow.jpg)
Dock Software: RocketDock (http://rocketdock.com/)
Dock Icons: Ecqlipse 2 (http://chrfb.deviantart.com/art/quot-ecqlipse-2-quot-PNG-59941546)
Clock Software: Rainmeter (http://code.google.com/p/rainmeter/)
Clock Skin: Modified Simplicity (http://darkpain-akh.deviantart.com/art/Simplicity-39268503)

Now let's see yours!

Quick Launch, Start Bar and even Run are just way more efficient. And Windows 7 even adds a new taskbar in to the soup. Using Desktop for programs and files is just meh.

how are those things way more efficient than an icon on a desktop?

Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/) is the reason I don't have desktop icons. A couple quick keystrokes launches anything on my computer. With things so easily accessible, my desktop is essentially eye-candy.

Yeah, I have Quicksilver for the Mac which does the same thing--just hit whatever keystroke you set to open it and start typing whatever you want to open.  things i open all the time are on my dock, everything else is with QS.  The only icon on my desktop is to open my harddrive in finder and that's just because i felt like having SOMETHING there

it takes 5 minutes to bang a wallpaper like that out its all brushes downloaded from deviantart, place on picture. that is just proof that the gtuy has no originality and cant do anything except use brushes

the photos hes using arent even good quality. wouldnt be surpised if he hasnt even touched the levels on it. just take a picture throw some brushes on and youre done instant art

It kind of was actually. Like I just needed to take pictures. I really wanted a picture of this bluejay, but I don't have lenses or anything of the sort so I couldn't get it in focus and properly zoomed, sadly.

EDIT: thanks though, I'm sort of in the habit of saving everything as png so I'll swap that out now

i don't use my desktop apart from txts and folders and the last game i played was mother 3 last semester so yep i play lots of gba roms. who is going to see my desktop apart from people on the internet, anyway? to be fair tonight i was thinking about what having floral wallpaper as wallpaper says about me, that i would prefer that over natural desktops. does it even matter when the nature scenes are essentially glamor shots. dumb things. i was watching an environmental film festival thing and one of them was just a series of stills, plus i've been reading about commercialization vs. aestheticization lately, so it wasn't out of nowhere hm... what does my desktop say about me

i will try to be better....

Link, just incase it messes up in the hide tags (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6967/50146712.jpg)

I would have made this a seamless edit of wallpapers but I decided not to. Even though the second monitor retains the height of 1200 pixels... it's physically smaller than my main monitor (by 2x5 inches) so it really didn't work for me. This works fine though.

Getting a cintiq tablet will add a third 'monitor' so my desktop will extend downwards from the main by 1200x800 or 1600x1200 pixels (I think, I forgot their exact specs) depending on whichever model I decide on getting.

Icon filled desktops are ugly. The wallpaper is a peace of art that is sometimes nice to look at. I wouldn't destroy it with ugly icons. :( Also, there is no need for icons any longer when there are keystroke programs like gnome-do, launchy etc.

Those three big vertical ones are just for browsing the library, the horizontal panel at the bottom is the playlist and shows what's playing. So I can double click some song in the library view and get that added to the playlist and then browse for some more. You can probably make your own skin pretty swift and easy, but I can also send my skin if you like, just give me a pm.

Windows 7 runs amazingly fast compared to even xp on my laptop. the only problem is that when I tried it, I could not play certain games as they did not have the correct drivers available for my video card. it manages memory usage a lot better, and has a few neat little extras here and there. I'm looking forward to getting the final version.

Copious amounts of icons. A picture of amazingly cool synthesizer replicas by Dan McPharlin (http://www.flickr.com/photos/danmcp/) on the laptop screen and a picture of my native Rotterdam on the main screen. At work I use another screen of the same type, on which this image is used: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Toledo_Skyline_Panorama,_Spain_-_Dec_2006.jpg

I like 128x128 icons on my desktop a lot more than the usual 32x32 or 48x48. I actually think the Mac OS X default is 64x64 or even bigger. I still use tiny icons when browsing files, though:

I've been playing Far Cry 2, and I'm using a wallpaper to remind myself to play it. Though really I keep it to get me in the mood to play it... when ever I see screenshots or video of video games it makes me want to play them... same apparently works with wallpaper.

I use my desktop as sort of a post it board. Programs I'm using frequently, files I'm working on, music I want to have at a single click's reach...

I wait until I have the whole thing filled up, and then I move all the stuff to a folder for that date, nest it in another folder with the other archives, and start all over again.

It works for me, but then again I have a near eidetic memory (when I actually bother to pay attention and engage it...). Remembering that I worked on file x in mid October of 2006 is no problem, so when the customer comes back to have another ad created or the same document re-designed for another publication, I'm right there and working on it instead of wondering where it got corralled or having to engage the search function.
Title: Post Your Desktop!
Post by: Mama Luigi on July 27, 2009, 11:22:05 pm
Well, if it works for you then by all means. You could potentially see why we are confused as there are more efficient ways to keep organized. I, too, never have to reach for the search function because I know where everything is. I've organized it that way (via fences on the desktop and an organized archive for my photos, documents, and projects). But seriously, whatever floats your boat dude ;)

I used to do this. I mean, my desktop still gets filled up sometimes. But now instead of throwing everything in shitty nested folders, I delete most of them and puit the important stuff in the appropriate foldewr.

why 1.0?  how many revisions of a baby name program do you need to make in the future?
why not just use one of the millions of sites that do this exact thing?
why do you need it enough to warrant a desktop icon

Because in case I don't have internet connection, I can use it to look up names for characters on my RPG Maker games. That is why you also see Riva FLV Player, it's a program that allows me to watch flash video files such as YouTube videos. :welp:

Warning: this is a very wide picture (dual-screen).
The stuff on my desktop is usually stuff I'm using right now or temporary files. I normally use the folders bar at the top for accessing all my files and the quick launch links on the start menu for starting apps. Both the folders bar and the start menu normally auto-hide. Finally the background image is custom made using some streak photography software I made a few years ago.

Agh StudioFortress I would hate to sit down at your computer because you're just like "fuck conventions, I'm going to do what works for me!".
It used to annoy the hell out of my boss whenever he worked with me on stuff at my PC. I always found it really funny. I also use a trackball and one of those ergonomic split keyboards, that's enough to stop people from using my PC.
Ah but seriously I'm sure there's a better way to accomplish what you're going for there... I think you might like Stardock Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) as you've got that whole grouping thing going on.
Thanks, but that looks like it adds panels to the desktop. I only ever see my desktop when I boot and shutdown the PC. What's so great about the folders bar is that it pops up on top of other apps, so I can grab stuff without switching away from the app. But I've since switched to Windows 7 and it can no longer do the folders bar at the top. I've had to move those folders onto the Start menu and it's no where near as good.

the quality looks pretty bad because it's actually an animated wallpaper and the video's resolution isn't 1920*1200 like my native resolution is but it looks good in action. here's a short video if anyone's interested:

Thanks again, but I don't like that either. I'd now need to click twice in order to access my folders and apps and I much prefer my new Windows 7 layout where it's all available (although my previous one was waaaaaay better).

I might go back to using launchy (http://www.launchy.net/), another cool app. You can open it with ctrl+space and then type in what you want to run. It features auto-completion for the app and folders names which re-priotises as you use it, allowing you to type less in the future.

I don't mean to sound condescending in the slightest, but you do realize that the functionality of Launchy already exists in Windows? Simply press the window key and then type whatever app or document you want to launch (complete or incomplete... typing "calc" and hitting enter will launch the calculator, for instance).

Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems like the purpose of Launchy is to fill that role for Windows XP users. This feature only first appeared in Vista and has carried over to Windows 7.

it's called DeskScapes.
Did you pay for this?

Not on mine (although it should)...
I had forgotten about that, however even when it works it's waaaaaay slower then Launchy. Plus Launchy has a calculator built into it. and allows you to do more then just open apps like searching google. I also dislike that start menu, I was really disappointed that they had removed the classic menu. It's much simpler and to the point.

Yeah it's really just eye candy like Aero is. I wasn't hot on Dreamscenes because they're just videos and they eat up CPU and energy... but if it was a rendered background that probably wouldn't be bad at all.

At least most of them are right? I thought even the free version came with some water effect that was rendered on the fly. That's sort of a buzzkill I guess... I've been experimenting using the screen saver as the background. The ribbons screen saver takes like 3% CPU usage for my OC e7200, so not bad at all.

That's the free Dream Aquarium screensaver set to the background. I love it!

From what I've read they haven't officially released Dream Aquarium for the mac but I hear it works fine using CrossOver. There are alternatives but apparently people tend to like DA more than the other aquarium savers. Also remember there's the wallsaver mac widget which lets you turn any mac screensaver into your desktop wallpaper.

And I'm sorry you lack the brain cells required to comprehend the beauty of such a photograph, Atari. How the round yet defined features of her face and flowing curves in her hair are represented and repeated in the plants and nature of the background is nothing to scoff at. A lesser photographer would have attempted to meld the two into one, trying to push some clichéd façade like "nature's beauty". Instead, we see a deliberate attempt to separate woman and scenery into two distinct planes, with the focus on Mila herself. This is further defined by utilizing flash photography in diffused natural light as a tool in shaping the image to the photographer's design. This creates the appearance of a natural yet supernatural, divine and perfect being.

my desktop is exposed for the 10 minutes a day a window isn't open. it's not an actual desktop, you don't have to have a wide open space before you can use it.

the things you use should be easy to get to. i use the quick launch bar, the first page of the start menu, and the desktop. the desktop is the best place to store files you're working on imo.

If that's ubuntu it uses much more power than windows 7

Maybe that's because I was running it from the cd rom
Title: Post Your Desktop!
Post by: fatty on February 17, 2010, 07:28:03 am
Windows 7 uses less power than XP for me, I can stay a full 6 hours on 7, about 5 and a half hours on XP, UBUNTU on the other hand claims to have a four hour uptime but I usually operate it for about four and a half hours and the battery meter said that the battery was at 50% or so. Mac uses up the most power, it's pretty much done in four or so hours.

I don't get how people can stand to use that grouping option on the taskbar. It's the least user friendly function in the history of time.

I say this but I have a 24" taskbar. Oh and I really like to read the description of what's in the windows I have open. Real handy.

Go to your taskbar settings, check use small icons and tell it to never combine. Save yourself a thousand hours of using the useless feature that is aero peek.

The best feature is the gestures to position windows. I use side-by side browsing a lot so that's very useful.

The way the start menu never forgets it's programs no matter how much load the CPU is under is a good one too. I remember vista being like errrrr hang on loading start menu.... Still loading... OK go put the kettle on I admit I have no idea what you have installed...

i keep the default browser, media player and explorer quick launch icons because i use them so often it's quicker than win+d'ing or even using the start menu, and the right click features are pretty useful also, but yeah they use up way too much task bar real estate

It sucks? In what way? It's aesthetically a lot more pleasing than GREY.
Also if you're concerned about battery life then turn transparency in Aero off, which will not sacrifice battery and give you the additional Aero goodies and benefits (GPU rendering saves the CPU from rendering windows).

Well like I said beyond aesthetics there is utility to it.

I also think the windows classic theme works fine enough on older operating systems but looks terribly dated on modern operating systems. Aero is much more pleasing to my eye although I have mixed opinions about transparent (and blurred) windows.

Aero shake, aero peek, taskbar and alt+tab thumbnails, GPU rendering, Flip 3D (more imporantly, Switcher 2.0 (http://insentient.net) to emulate Mac expose).
Title: Post Your Desktop!
Post by: big ass skelly on February 26, 2010, 12:49:51 pm
wow there are actually some THINGS it does apart from making window borders look like you're wearing other people's glasses??? Lemme check these out.
OK we got aero shake (single unconfigurable(?) mouse gesture), aero peek (same thing as what happens if you press win+d twice except you can still see borders of windows??), alt+tab thumbnails (dunno if they improved it but it's useless on vista. Only time an alt+tab icon+name doesnt suffice is when you have a billion instances of the same program open and that doesn't happen with browsers anymore so it's just file manager windows in which case every giant aero thumbnail looks the same anyway) GPU rendering (probably actually quite useful I guess but I'm not sure) and switcher clone (good)

So out of the 5 things 2 of them are useful as far as i can tell and the 1 of those 2 things that isn't just mac clone was done on fucking x windows like 5 years ago and everyone wrote it off because it was a stupid waste of resources. I'm not convinced. I''m gonna stick to boxes.

Also all of those things could be done without that horrible glassy shit. The fact some of those things which are apparently just window manager usability improvements are bundled into aero says to me people need to be strongarmed into using this shit. My mum loves it though, she says it's "like the computer in that movie with what's his name Tom Cruise? What's that called mark? you know the one. come on YOU KNOW" (it's minority report)

Title: Post Your Desktop!
Post by: Mince Wobley on February 26, 2010, 04:21:18 pm
I think you have a point about it using the gpu instead of cpu to render stuff making a difference, I re-enabled aero and now my notebook burns about 10 watts instead of 12-13 (with the lowest possible brightness). But I do like the classic theme the best.

Well, for one thing I wouldn't mind if anyone got their hands on it, it's just a password for an FTP server from my school. I don't know why anyone would be interested in it in the first place, since there's nothing on that server but some webpages. And even if they did something bad, my mentor would have to take responsibility.

That's assuming I'd get a trojan, which, without trying to sound smart, seems unlikely to me.

Lol, you need some new hardware man! You probably could run the fish tank background like you see in my vid, it would just not be economical for your CPU. It puts a whopping 3% full-time strain on my Core-i5. For you it would probably be something in the ballpark of 35%, assuming you have a P4.

man whats the point of actually putting porn on your computer any more?  And the same for keeping around games once you've beaten them.  I used to keep around .isos that I had ripped or downloaded of games that I had played through, but then got rid of them because I realized that I would never want them or play them again.   And if I suddenly wanted to, I could just re-aquire them through the same means that I had found them in the first place.  Same thing with keeping around television shows and anime i guess too.

yeah i'm honestly not into that.  i find it horrifying generally actually.  Like just even the idea of it, not even half the pedophillic and whatever thematical problems that hentai presents, just the basic idea of using the cartoon medium for pornography in the first place.   I also have a huge problem with the whole idea of depicting underage characters (generally pre-pubsecent, and female), as well as the whole thing of rape by means of non-humanoid sexual companionship.

No, that would be RPGs. Anime is typically either giant robot street brawls, teen girls going through school, or whatever the hell Bleach is supposed to be. Though, on the topic of real versus hand-drawn porn. It shouldn't matter what we view, as we're all just sitting around in *insert area here* using whatever means necessary to obtain pleasure from said pornographic images. It's essentially like gamers trying to convince the other one that video games are better than strategy board games, and vice-versa. At the end of the day, both just walk away and continue to enjoy what they do, and if truly affected by it, remember the argument that took place.

Some are into bondage while others are into furry. Vore, tentacle, unbirthing, inflation, bestiality, water-sports, mix and match of all sorts of actions and creatures; you name it, someone's masturbating to it.

If a discussion can be had, a discussion must be had.

well it would be boring if this topic was just about posting desktops. when people on gw enter a topic, they expect a certain degree of randomness. so we need to deliver

I've decided that it would be for the best to remove Diablo II and Rm2k from my desktop, as I'm currently only working with Rm2k3 and Diablo II to me is nothing but killing Diablo runs on my lv.53 Barbarian on normal non-ladder.

Barbarians are for pussys real men do it on paladin using only damage given by thorns

I was playing a Paladin during a previous ladder, but when that one got sent to non-ladder after the new one, I decided just to delete it as it was only around lv.26.
