Title: THIS IS NOT A GW MEET
Post by: Shepperd on April 12, 2009, 08:23:33 pm
Alright fellas.

Probably most of you guys noticed that I've been absent for quite a while.
Well, that's because I've been busy hanging around with my man GaZZwa.

That's right, what was eventually going to happen, it finally did.

GAZZ MET SHEP (and the world trembled)

Here's what G wrote:

"Alright fellows! So, in January I took a plane from London and ended up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some random guy who looked kinda familiar met me at the airport, what was his name again? Oh yes, it was fuckin’ SHEPPERD.

So we partied in Buenos Aires and explored the city and jammed and ate amazing Argentine food (seriously the meat is the greatest thing in the world and the second greatest thing in the world is dulce de leche) and we went white water rafting and trekked up mountains, across glaciers, canoed in huge beautiful lakes, kayaked on the Rio del la Plata (which is so wide you can’t see the other side, the other side being Uruguay), went to Brazil, stepped foot in Chile, took several 20+ hour bus trips, walked across salt flats, went to remote towns in the desert populated by indigenous people who crowded round when we went into the street, spent some time in the jungle, swam in Shep’s pool (dude has a pool!), mountain biked, ziplined across rivers, went under Iguazu falls on a boat, and went reeeeaaally far south which is pretty close to Antarctica, made friends, went camping, went to the fucking carnival, ate the biggest ice creams in the world ever (as big as my arm no joke!), swam in the Rio Uruguay, and had a supersplendid time.

Shep fell over a lot. I got bitten by an insane amount of mosquitos. A month and a half later I was back in the northern hemisphere reminiscing on the great trip I’d taken yet. Mark my words, I shall return to South America soon."

Inhale the emptiness

Salta's salt flats

Into the Iguazu Falls (literally)

There's water on mars guys

Although it wasn't all just traveling and becoming part of the grandeur of the outdoors. We had some massive good fun, got into trouble, busted climbing fences, hitchhiking, sleeping over at grizzly old man's house, G's chin swelling to Jay Leno proportions, getting dumped at 5 am in the middle of nowhere and having to find way back to the hostel, among others...

However, we think that the best way to show our solid good times on the south hemisphere is by posting this amazing video G did:

AND THAT'S NOT ALL!!!!

During Gazz's stay at my place we recorded a TERRIFIC music album.

SPACELANDING - PLAY YOUNG

the following things are true:

argentina is a very long way away from the uk (over 11,000 km apparently)
argentina is much bigger than the uk and has jungle to the north, desert to the north west, mountains and forests and lakes and ice fields in the south, and empty open space in between. It also has the fuckin' Andes.
shep speaks better spanish than I do
buenos aires in the summer time is really really hot
if you have the chance to go visit a friend in a faraway land you should absolutely 100% do it without hesitation
even if that means going by yourself and shitting it that he'd turn out to be a murdering rapist OR WORSE
argentina is the most amazing country
this trip has improved anglo-argentine relations tenfold
the spanish title for the film Blazing Saddles is "Craziness in the West"
argentine parrillas, alfajores, dulce de leche, ice cream and empanadas are AMAZING. Dulce de batata con queso fresco less so.
argentine people drive like craaaaazypeoples
having a 60 year old australian man named Dennis fall in love with you isn't fun
nor is having your bank account frozen when you're on your own and thousands of miles away from anyone else you know
an argentine evening (dinner at 11pm, bar at 2.30, club at 4.30, home at 6 or 7) is the way forward
i had an insanely good time

that is all

a month and a half! that's so cool. you just spent a month and a half in argentina. did you stay with shep the whole time or what?

here's how it went. I flew to Buenos Aires (where Shep lives), stayed at his place for 2 nights. Then, we both took a bus for 21 hours to get us to San Carlos de Bariloche (see map below). Hostelled it up there and a nearby town called Villa l'angosturra for probably a week in total, biking, canoeing, trekking, rafting etc, before driving south for 2 days to El Chalten, where we hiked up to Mt Fitzroy and walked on the glacier and did ice climbing, then a few hours south to El Calafate to see the famous Perito Moreno glacier. We then flew back up to Buenos Aires. I stayed at Shep's place for a week, went out in the city and did all kinds of cool things.

Then I went off by myself, taking another 20 hour or so bus to Salta, where I stayed for just under a week. Hostelled it up, made friends, went on walks, went across the salt flats, visited these really remote towns in the middle of nowhere with all these little adobe houses, got my ass dumped by my hostel friends at a nightclub and ending up walking for hours across Salta at 5 in the morning with no clue where I was going, with no money for a cab. Saw frozen dead inca children. Then I took a 24 hour bus journey across east right up to the border with Brazil to Puerto Iguazu, where Shep met me. We hostelled it there for a few nights, saw the falls, went to Brazil, then back to Buenos Aires.

2 nights later we went with Shep's sister and her friend a few hours north to a town on the Rio Uruguay called Gualeguaychu, where we camped and went to the carnival. That was a blast. Got caught by cops (or security? dont know) climbing over the fence into the VIP area. Back to Buenos Aires, I explored the city by myself for a few days, hung out with Shep's mates, then home time.

Esiann: I graduated from university last year, I travelled round Europe for a month, then worked until January, by which time I'd saved enough money to go to Argentina. If I can get another job (they're very scarce at the moment) I'm hoping to go back for at least 3 months later in the year.

Wow man, this is awesome. Just out of curiosity, how much did the whole trip cost to you? This is one of the coolest things ever. I'll hopefully travel around Europe this summer but it would be really cool to go somewhere like South America or New Zealand or something like that. But yeah, this is cool as hell.

also the shitty thing is south america is full of stuff like this.  the us has stuff but nowhere near as as much i dont think.  its just not the same.  i wish i lived in a geographically cooler country.  canada has tons of nice shit but it's so cold!!!  like we have mountains and rivers and lakes and salt flats too but.... theyre really spread out and in between all of that are walmarts and best cuts.  argentina doesnt seem to be like this.  also we dont have JUNGLE.  still, the southwest seems really cool.  like... geographically and historically interesting and really kind of a neat OUTDOORS/WILDERNESS/NATURAL PLACE.  lets all buy a camper and drift . . . through the great american southwest

also i really want to go to MI bu ti don't know if i'll be able to. unless i get loads of money from FAFSA. it's about $15,000 per semester to go to MI, not counting cost of living in LA. it'll take me roughly 3 years to complete my degree. $90,000 or so. :(

fun fact: Lynchburg College is roughly $40,000 per semester. For $40,000 per semester you could either go to Lynchburg College or Georgetown.

tough choice,,,

actually looking around $15,000 a semester isn't that bad. but when you're poor its still a lot of money... being poor never bothered me tbh. i didn't even realize i was poor until a  few years ago. i guess when you've never experienced anything else it just seems normal. it just sucks now when im looking at colleges and thinking "i could never ever go there unless i got absolutely boatloads of money from FAFSA."

one of my cousins lives in LA though so maybe i could crash with her or she could help me find a roommate. (shes hot too... :naughty:)

i knew these two kids when i was young who were so so poor man.  it was comical at the time and still is to a point.  they used to argue over who got to wear the good shoes that day (they were both mcgregors but one pair was really beat up and the other was just kind of beat up) and they made their own pogs out of corrugated cardboard and for some inexplicable reason they had an empty fish tank on their kitchen counter that they kept food in but they didnt bother to remove the sand/coral.  there was other stuff too, like them having like 40 rusty old bikes with flat tires chained up in their garage and the fact that they owned a minibus spray painted gray covered in dust and filled with BOXES.  even at the age of 8 i was aware of how dreadfully poor they were

I'll hopefully travel around Europe this summer but it would be really cool to go somewhere like South America or New Zealand or something like that. But yeah, this is cool as hell.

I managed to get a really good price for my flights: £600. I spent a little more than £800 on the rest of the trip, thanks to Argentina being a lot cheaper than the UK, and of course staying at Shep's in Buenos Aires instead of a hostel. I'd saved up more than double than that from my job and budgeted for much more, and it's great that I came back with plenty of money still. In fact, 2 weeks after being back from Argentina, I randomly hopped on a flight to Berlin and hung out there for a week with the money I didn't spend.

also the shitty thing is south america is full of stuff like this.  the us has stuff but nowhere near as as much i dont think.  its just not the same.  i wish i lived in a geographically cooler country.  canada has tons of nice shit but it's so cold!!! like we have mountains and rivers and lakes and salt flats too but.... theyre really spread out and in between all of that are walmarts and best cuts. argentina doesnt seem to be like this. also we dont have JUNGLE. still, the southwest seems really cool. like... geographically and historically interesting and really kind of a neat OUTDOORS/WILDERNESS/NATURAL PLACE. lets all buy a camper and drift . . . through the great american southwest

when I did my trip across Europe last year, some friends went to the U.S. Whilst I'm sure I'd have a great time there (you always do when you're adventuring with friends, right?), there does seem to be something not-that-exciting about the travelling across the U.S. For me at least, there's the same language, similar (in many ways) culture, and I imagine it'd suffer for being a lot of cities that aren't too different from one another. Sure New York is going to be hugely different to say, LA, but in between? I don't know. Whereas in Europe you're going to different countries and working with different languages every 5 minutes. And I don't have a bad word to say about the parts of South America I've seen.
Title: THIS IS NOT A GW MEET

yeah it's just not that interesting.  i mean some people find it fascinating but i think it pales in comparison to actually going through different countries with starkly different cultures.  the language barrier would be fun, too.

ryan, why dont you just choose a cheaper music school, man?  that's ludicrously expensive.  thats not most schools!

nah boston is actually a really cool city relative to other ones!  i was making fun of chef because boston is INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN and past a certain scale it becomes difficult to differentiate between cities, i think.  new york is more interesting imo but cities like bostom or chicago are hardly BORING, even compared to larger ones.

its pretty bad. last year like 10k were documented to be dead because of the drug wars. i imagine they are even more cuz these are just recorded numbers. where i used to live is terrible right now. i remember hearing shots in front of my house and some blocks away some grenade detonated. its a fucking civil war.

but the issue of oaxaca is different. in 2006 there was a general strike and the government was thrown out of oaxaca lol. but it was ridden also by right wing paramilitaries who were paid 30 bucks a day to kill people

why dont ya marry him...

Quote
In Argentina, marriage is allowed only between a man and woman. However, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (since 2002)[1] and the Province of Río Negro (2003) [2] and the city of Villa Carlos Paz (2007)[3] offered the possibility of civil unions, which are private contracts between two responsible adults (opposite-sex and same-sex couples) who have lived together for at least two years. These couples are granted some of the rights provided to married couples.

This is really awesome and I am inspired by your bromance which is not a word I would normally use but I can't find another that does this justice! It is heartwarming straight-dude friendship!

whoa whoa whoa! Last time I checked this topic it was all ego-inflation and "man you're so cool". What's happened guys? Gay marriage? Bromance? I feel very vulnerable right now.

Like I said, if I can save the money up, I hope to go and do a big South America trip for a few months later in the year. I'd go to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. There's also a town in Paraguay right on the border with Argentina and Brazil where they sell guns, so I'd like to go check that out (Shep didn't want to when we were near there before). Clearly, I quite like South America.  Talking of bromances...we saw these samba dancers...one of which was clearly a man in drag. I think Shep fell in love that evening. I saw it in his eyes. He was crushed when I told him it was a guy.

shep also wants to do a trip to europe in december-february, so I get to show him around London and uh, the shithole that I call home.

to draw attention away from any bromantic ideals, here be some more choice photo cuts:

man is there any spot in Argentina that isn't seriously epic

only disappointing thing is the world's biggest ice cream I totally feel let down

Edit: argentina's flag is pretty creepy but maybe it's just because of the music over it

I agree U.S. needs COOLER GEOGRAPHY do we have like the tallest or biggest or greenest or bluest anything (well biggest stuff aside from people and deficit lol)

Edit: Is Niagara Falls at least the widest waterfall or something because I'm pretty sure in the video I saw one that owned niagara falls as far as tallness goes

I seem to remember reading that Iguazu Falls in Argentina is the 5th tallest in the world. Shep probably knows for sure. Having never been to Niagra or Victoria falls, I don't really know how they compare, but Iguazu was cool because not only was it huge, but there were loads of waterfalls of varying sizes all along the river. You'd be walking through the forest and there were waterfalls everywhere. At the u-bend at the end of the river, you had the devil's throat fall which is the really big one. Then on both sides of the river there were lots of falls of varying sizes. I found these panorama picture taken from the brazillian side that puts things into perspective a little bit:

Wow that place looks so awesome :O
I think Niagara Falls might have looked like that before people built talking houses all around it.
