Title: summer stuff
Post by: jamie on April 14, 2009, 10:18:52 pm
Summers coming up and I am not spending 4 months wallowing around old Airdrie Town, Scotland. So I'm looking into some kind of work for over summer. Right now I'm looking at fruit picking in Denmark. The money is really good but it's hard work of course and it's full time. I'm used to not working hard so it's kind of a put off but I really should just dig in with this it looks like a real good deal. I'll keep looking into it for a couple days though, get a good idea and see what looks most attractive.

So

What are people's plans for summer? (not parties and stuff, but if you're doing anything like this or some kind of project)
Ever done any summer work abroad? What the heck was it like?
Are there better ideas than fruit picking?

do you have big hands? if yes, maybe you could be a watermelon picker.

What kind of fruit is it? I never heard people going to denmark out of all places to pick fruit. My friends did that in New Zealand a while ago and while it wasn't that lucrative, it was enough to get around and have a blast while being there.

I wanna travel somewhere cause a 1 month vacation's coming up in august.. dunno where yet though >_>

I am moving to Texas for 90 days to live with my girlfriend.

Considering I usually complain about the 3 days of moderate heat the UK gets per year, it will be interesting to live through 90 days of Texan death.

Gonna be fun.

strawberries, apples pears and peas, maize, mushrooms, onions, pumpkins etc

The lower paid jobs earn 10-14 euros an hour which is great money as far as I'm used to, and some of the others earn up to 20 euros an hour but i guess that'll be for experience folks. Apparently you can earn 25 euros an hour for choppin down and decorating christmas trees.

I'm heading to New York from June 29th - July 6th for my birthday.  Other than that though, I really don't have much planned for summer.

that's actually pretty good money, plus denmark? I'd totally do it.

i'm going to work at a pharmacy, take photos of bands 'n' nightclubs and play some music myself! i was going to go on a fully paid scholarship to study in china but the organization changed their requirements in a really short notice :(.

christmas trees are farmed for the purpose of being christmas trees. it's not like they are choppin' down forests and decorating them!

huh. i didn't even think about that. i probably wouldn't do it though it sounds hard and i'd rather be dealing with things i can chomp a few of.

If my jobs contract isn't extended thru the summer, I'm probably gonna spend a month or two on a processing vessel again up in alaska. Probably end up doing a lot of reading up there

this is really true, it may look like a lot of money but denmark is hella expensive so it might not really be worth as much as it sounds!

Post by: jamie on April 14, 2009, 11:58:46 pm
How is it expensive? You stay on a campsite and I'd bet I could find cheap food there's no way the prices would be much higher than here and I'd save most of the money for buying things elsewhere after the work is finished.

I ain't gonna be wining and dining all over the place, I'd live meagre and take my entertainment (books) with me, so I could use the money on something real nice after.

my summer is gonna be pretty hectic. Since uni has pretty much been a walkthrough I dont think I deserve time off to travel etc and just want to get stuck into work. I'm applying for jobs currently to start work in London this summer. Hopefully something will come up, otherwise I'm fucked

I'll just be returning to my usual summer job to help pay for college and to hopefully get myself a few sweet toys in the meantime before the next semester begins.  Also sometime in the middle of that in summer in July I have to attend my brother's wedding, but that is really more of a sidenote to an overall uneventfully planned summer.

Seriously fruit picking was probably the best job I ever had. We picked apples, pears, and grapes for various wine and fruit wines. I loved it. It was so relaxing and IN NATURE OR SOMETHING. I seriously felt like a zen monk when I was picking pears at like 8am and wiping the frost off them. This is a pear. Am I holding this pear or is this pear holding me? We are all pears....

Fruit picking like that would be fun I bet, but I had to spend a summer a few years back in early hs picking strawberries and it sucked gonads

The guys who set up the Introversion games company studied at my university and are letting some undergrads here contribute to their next game as part of a summer internship. I applied for it but I haven't heard back yet. The money's not great but it'll be enough to pay for rent and food so it'd be enough.

Also, what you're planning reminded me of the summer my brother spent in Denmark picking flowers. It does sound really idyllic on paper but it was damn hard work.

how do you get a job in denmark doing that stuff? Do you apply online or something? Are people living in the US eligible? I'll pay for a flight to europe if I could get a gig over there for a few months.

man I should be building my resume and shit, but I'm at the point in my life where I want to do all kinds of adventurous shit like this.

man fruitpicking is pretty bad if you do that as a profession. you might think its cool cuz ur young and wild but brown folks picking strawberries in american plantations prolly think otherwise......

i mean it might be fun to do it for a few months but it sounds pretty horrible as something to do for a living

my town gets real hot when it's summer in the city and the back of my neck gets all dirty and gritty. i been downm isn't it a pity? but there doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city. all around the people look half dead walking on the sidewalk hotter than a match-head.

But at night it's a different world; go out and find a girl. come on come on and dance all night, despite the heat it will be alright

Yeah I think it's judged on how many kilos you pick per hour. I read that if it falls far behind everyone elses ratio for a while then that's how you'll get sacked so I guess you could work like fuck for two hours, relaxed for one, and so on. Maybe, maybe it won't be that easy but I do like that it doesn't seem to regulated when you're actually out there.

I was looking at this topic a few days ago thinking how uneventful my summer's gonna be. Get work, do work, if can't find any, study. Then last friday me and my girlfriend spontaneously decided to book flights to London and now it all seems sugar.
