LONDON — Stephen Hawking, the British mathematician and physicist famed for his work on black holes, was rushed to a hospital Monday and was seriously ill, Cambridge University said.
Hawking has been fighting a chest infection for several weeks and was being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the university city northeast of London, the university said.
:( noo, he was a really smart guy.
-

-
oh no :( I hope he's okay. dude's clearly consistently in SHIT SHAPE but I doubt anyone else has done more to promote science since Carl Sagan so I hope he gets better.
-
I dunno what to say - what do I know? But I hope he gets better. I didn't realise he was only 67.
-
Well, for someone with ALS he sure has lived an awfully long time. I really hope he gets better, but I wouldn't be surprised if his time was coming to a end relatively soon.
-
wtf you guys are all negative nancies...negative nancies...

The latest version of this article is a bit more optimistic. I don't think he'll be sucked into a black hole why am I making stupid jokes about his health.

Steve will be okay!
-

gl stevey boy
-
I can totally imagine him suddenly jumping from his bed completely cured of his paralysis House-style after this.
On the other hand, :(
-
Steve! Get better.

-
what's distressing for me is that my uncle has the same disease and I dont want to read this shit
-
sorry shep
-
aw fuck!
i hope he gets better and still comes to my university to research this summer :(:(.
-
He's survived for 47 years with a disease that gives you a life expectancy of like three years. He's a fighter

it's natural to try and make light of a... dark matter. he still looks healthy though, his skin is... radiant.

:( noo, he was a really smart guy.
what is this supposed to mean?
-
are we supposed to pray for his recovery...
-
what is this supposed to mean?
what? it means he is a really smart guy. he contributed enormous amounts to science while being confined to a wheelchair the majority of his career. what are you doing
-
stop using past tense... you're freaking me out...
-
lol yeah you put "was"
WHERE'S THE FAITH
-
I noticed the "was" and began scrabbling around for updates that he had in fact died. NOT SO.
-
are we supposed to pray for his recovery...
If you wanted to, I'm sure he wouldn't hold it against you.
-
i don't think he'd stand for it
-
He is now expected to make a full recovery.
Seems like he was in there for only a brief history of time heh
-
i don't think he'd stand for it

yeah i was going to make that joke but it honestly seemed too low hanging.
seriously though ryan opens with "goodbye he was great" and eric's all "we'll miss you" and the dude has recovered so much he's out of the hospital apparently and we're STILL talking like he's dying? is it just not cool to read anything about anything and just have a knee jerk reaction of GOODBYE...OUR OLD PHYSICS FRIEND...

he's meant to do a public lecture in waterloo.. if i could go to that, i think i'd be invincibly happy for 2 years straight.

I'm just going to say now (before anyone else gets the chance to) that we better take this recovery news with a grain of salt.
At least until after his waterloo.

"I believe the universe is governed by the laws of science. The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws."
-Stephen Hawking, Reuters
Yeah, don't think he'd hold it against you. Though given the above, I doubt he'd think it'd make a difference.
It's good to hear he's getting better :) What's with all the negativity and the "RIPs." Dude's still alive and kicking.
EDIT: Just posted a positive article on his recovery, but noticed it was already posted above.
