Title: 360 Game Advice (looking to build my library on the back of an awesome sale)
Post by: Kezay on April 26, 2009, 05:45:56 am
Okay, well I'm sure some have heard of that sale Best Buy is having Sunday and if you haven't... well, damn, cause it's got some pretty decent looking stuff coming up for $9.99. :P  ANYWAY, I'm looking to build my 360 library and quite a few games on the 360 side I have some interest in but with money being a bit tight I'm only going to go for two (maybe 3) of the games I picked out on the list.  Initially, my choices were going to be Infinite Undiscovery and Devil May Cry 4 but I know quite a few people here have 360s and could probably offer some suggestions/advice or something if I could possibly get more bang for my buck with other games.  I'm not really dead set on either of the ones I've chosen, if anything DMC4 would be that third game if I decided to impulse buy while I'm there or something, but I'm pretty open otherwise.

Mind you, I don't have XBL up... not yet anyway so I can only imagine some games like ET: Quake Wars and UT3 might not be all that great unless I plan on going online with them, but still if they have decent single player I'm still open to it.

Infinite Undiscovery
Condemned 2
Devil May Cry 4
Enemy Territory Quake Wars
Too Human
Turok
Unreal Tournament 3

By the by, NeoGAF has info on the sale for all the other platforms too:

IU: It's alright if you can put up with a slightly broken game. I mean I love the game for some stupid reason and I don't know why; by all rights I shouldn't enjoy it, but to me it's just particularly endearing. Is that the right word? I dunno. HONESTLY it is pretty bad and I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know why I like it.

DMC4: Really fun for the first half of the game, then you get to BACKTRACK and play the same levels backwards in reverse order as Dante in what is surely the laziest example of game design ever. I really liked it because beating the shit out of the enemies is really SATISFYING (I dunno, it feels MEATY), but there's not a lot of replay value to it and it's only about 7-8 hours iirc. Probably stretch it to 10. I'm a big fan of DMC4 but then I like big dumb games like that, so.

Too Human: Nope stay away from this.

IU, I'm kind of interested in just because I want an RPG for the 360 and I don't exactly have the cash to blow on Vesperia or The Last Remnant at the moment, both of which I want to play.  A co-worker seems to like the game despite acknowledging its faults so I don't think it will be too bad.  Still, maybe I'll decide on something else in the meantime.

DMC4, a friend of mine who is a big fan of the series said pretty much the same thing back when it came out and when I asked him about the game since I was gonna buy it when I got my 360 last year. (glad I waited though, despite that backtracking nonsense I can't pass it up for just $10+ :P)

Too Human, pretty much a mild interest thing but your sentiments seemed to echo from everyone else I've talked to about the game since it came out.  Only reason it's on the list is because of this sale, otherwise...

How about Turok or Condemned 2?  I was gonna consider Silent Hill: Homecoming but I heard that was lame too, I'd probably rather get Condemned if I'm gonna go for something horror-y.

DON'T FUCKING BUY TOO HUMAN. It's a broke ass piece of shit. The premise seems mildly interesting as first (cyborg vikings vs an army of machines!!!!) but the gameplay is retarded. Too Human is a game for people already too emotionally commited to it to admit to themselves it sucks. It's imbalanced, buggy, laggy, and repetitive. And the story is so overdramatic and overacted that you won't be able to stop your eyes spinning in your sockets which may cause permanent vision impairment.

I guess there were quite a few people that did the smart thing and got the games throughout the week and will probably come back to return them for the sale price and get it that way cause the selection was limited.  All they had left of what I planned to check out were:

Infinite Undiscovery
Devil May Cry 4
Too Human
Unreal Tournament 3

DMC4 they still had, so I got that, and I managed to find a single copy of IU sitting on the 360 kiosk nearby.  I'll probably hold on to them since there is a BB near my job so I'll see if they have condemned 2 or something.  If so, I'll let IU go for that, otherwise, at least my considered picks were there.  And yeah, say no more... Too Human is out of sight out of mind now, I suppose. :P

If you want a good rpg that should be cheap try finding a copy of Eternal Sonata. Better then anything Square has done in the last 6-7 years.

Yeah, that was one of the first RPGs I wanted for the 360 when I planned on getting one but I can't find one cheap enough anywhere.  When I'm done with this round of games I might just pick it up at the lowest price I've been able to find it, that and Tales of Vesperia.

don't buy any of these terrible games. there's a couple of 360 games that do not suck:

dead space
gta iv
gears of war
bioshock
assassin's creed
COD4
marble blast

almost every other game on the system sucks.

assassins creed sucks imo.
get COD world at war. awesome replay value. the single player missons get a bit annoying near the middle, but overall story's okay. (i mean yeah its a generic wwII shooter but still). the multiplayer interface is just like cod4. same level up system and all. nazi zombies is awesome! I have yet to find teammates online that don't suck.

i really regret doing ALL THE SIDE MISSIONS but if you just breeze through it it's much better.

I have UT3, basically the experience you get offline is the exact same as online. It's fun while it lasts but gets old pretty quick.

If you're getting live though, I'd recommend Halo 3. Yea, I said it. But seriously, there's so much to do in that game online and off.. Forging alone keeps me creatively entertained for hours. It's best to dish out the money for the Legendary and Mythic map pack, (1400 MS points, about 20$), it makes the game experience much better. (added game modes - plus Mythic has Sandbox, the ultimate forge map. )

A really good underrated single player game would be Jericho. It's a very solid and original game. The story is actually very interesting, the gameplay is fresh (ability to switch from squad member to squad member, each with their own unique traits) and the graphics, while very gory, are very unique and well done. As the game progresses it gets a lot better too.
