I'll be going to see the new Star Trek because I love Star Trek cos yes it's my kind of stupid. Star Trek is my really lame thing I like alot - it's adorable! Future of humanity is bright and perfect we're all gonna be renaissance folk in space it'll rule and if that idea doesn't fill you with just a little bit of hope then screw you! Screw. You!
However this new one will probably have all that adorable stuff strangled to death in JJ Abrhams capable hands. Guy is a waste. I've watched the clips and trailers and while the whole thing is all SHAKY CAM...THIS AIN'T YOUR DADDY'S STAR TREK!!!, there's something in it that actually annoyed me and tells me this isn't MY Star Trek.
There's product placement in it. At a bar (in space), Lt. Uhura orders a Budweiser Classic along with a couple of Cardassian Sunrises. One of those two is out of place in a century where money and business was supposed to be obselete. Also, I haven't seen this but apparently it's been confirmed that there is a Nokia logo in the movie somewhere and that they were paid for it.
I guess Kirk will be all "Mr. Spock, can I use your Holo-Phone - I've run out of minutes on mine AGAIN" and Spock will respond "Captain, it is not logical for you to use such a sub-par service provider when brands like Nokia exist. Here, use my Nokia Holo-Phone Lite. I have unlimited minutes on weekends. It is the only logical course of action at this juncture" and then everyone in the audience will ejaculate into their popcorn.
-
my kind of stupid definitely describes star trek to me, and yeah this movie looks like a standard blockbuster and whoever said prelim reviews are probably fat dumb nerds (remember that Kevin Smith gushed over Watchmen when he saw it, a movie that pretty much no one cares about now), but I'll be honest the first teaser of dudes BUILDING THE ENTERPRISE made me think "w00t".
but yeah it's not a retcon I heard which is weird and a lot of plot details I didn't pay attention to got leaked so there's loads to talk about here!
-
Yes there's a time travel bit about this new bad guy Nero coming back in time accidentally (I think) while trying to hunt down Ambassador Spock. Spock doesn't become an Ambassador until he's an old fart though so this is Nimoy's part of the movie which I am actually a little surprised with. I thought he would just be in the first scene and then it'd be "Let me tell you about a little ole ship called 'Enterprise'" and he'd stare wistfully out the window into the distant past but I guess he's got a slightly more substantial role.
Also, apparently there's going to be 3 of these movies and JJ Abrhams had it in his contract that there should be no new series for at least two years after this movie which on the one hand might annoy people but it makes me go all "ohh...new star trek series on the way!" cos if I know it's comin then I am a-okay. I don't want it to have anything to do with these movies though, based on what I've seen (and what I've seen obviously isn't actually the movie), but it will have to have that SYNERGY otherwise all the kids will just go waaaahhhttt?
I dunno. I always thought it was kind of wacky Star Trek got away with saying that in the future religions and currency will be laughable, archaic concepts to us humans but I'll bet this movie abandons that stuff. Star Trek was never really a huge blockbuster movie, I mean it certainly was mainstream yeah but this movie seems to have made it's goal being to shred away all those cool things that made Star Trek better than what it usually was.
-
were you a fan of the original star trek btw?
i wasn't! i was next gen and beyond, and while i can watch the older stuff i gotta admit it seems actually WORSE in every way. not just dated but bad acting etc.
like i'm wondering how many of us saying YEA THIS IS MY KIND OF LAME are referring in fact to the later kind of lame.
-
i cant watch the original. its really awful man. tng is still kind of awful but in a different and much more acceptable way. and it's not even ACROSS THE BOARD awful like tos was.
-
I'm not big on the original series. The good intentions of the whole idea is outweighed by the total failure to realise them plus it's just kind of hard to stay interested in TV storytelling that primitive, especially when alot of the episodes are just shit, anyway. I don't hate it, but I'm definitely not an original series guy.
Did you know that the original pilot of the original series had a female first officer? The network told Roddenberry to fuck off with that thought, and they tried to get Uhura off the bridge as well but he wouldn't budge on that one apparently. The show is still crazily sexist, obviously, but seeing that he tried to put a woman as the No.2 made me like the guy a little more.
My favourite is TNG. I like DS9 quite alot as well, and I've never watched Voyager or Enterprise very much, just a couple episodes if it was late night and I was bored anyway.
-
TOS more like POS....
I'm no trekky. Gonna watch this though cause I do like sci fi but it looks kinda dumb. JJ abrams doesn't fill me with confidence. This is one instance where product placement and awful stuff like that might make me half smile because I can just imagine the impotent rage it'll fill so many trekkies with :(
-
wait i thought jamie was kidding.
dude what the fuck why would a multimillion dollar movie based on fucking star trek NEED product placement?
jesus christ that means he's doing it EXCLUSIVELY for product placement money. ugh. that actually is pretty shit.
-
I never liked the original series and even the cgi from TNG was too out-dated for me but I love the rest of the shows and just glad to be getting more Star Trek for me to watch.
-
Yeah this wasn't too bad. It wasn't too good either. Went to an advanced screening tonight.
I dunno, it's alright, it was just pretty god damn average. Looked nice tho!
-
the av club put this up obviously in anticipation of the movie: http://www.avclub.com/articles/spaceracism-is-bad-and-17-other-notsosubtle-lesson,27462/1/
honestly kind of distressed by how many of these i knew offhand.
-

Did they put the sexy back in Star Trek????
-
Whoever was playing Uhura certainly didn't look bad walking around in a mini-skirt.
And that Chris Pine, w-whoa... what a qt *_*
-
See I know I'm not the only one who finds it a little silly to retcon Star Trek and keep the horrendously stupid uniform from the TOS era. I know the fans would've shit bricks, chewed them up again in anger, and shit them out a second time but couldn't they have just adapted them a little to be a bit more TNG-style? All the Treks had some horrendous costumes (so many fucking jumpsuits, I feel bad for the kid who played Jake on DS9) but at least the Federation uniforms from TNG onwards were semi decent and believable. But jesus, all the female officers in miniskirts in TOS is just so bad and so 60s.
also I just went to Rotten Tomatoes and the reviewer snippet from a dude named Mark Ramsey who writes for "Movie Juice!" is:
The average Star Trek fan is fatter than a Mugatu. And I mean the kind of Mugatu that just ate a family of Mugatus. Hey, fella, is that your mouth or the Doomsday Machine?
-
hahah review jesus christ.
also I agree I know they had to strike a balance and for its time Star Trek was insanely progressive but those skirts are so fucking dated to the extent I feel genuinely uncomfortable.
like now we are kind of closer to the future and I can't imagine it would look like this at places anymore. and questions that were salient as fuck before are now definitely just irrelevant (chekhov was a cold war reference but for us it's gonna be like "why would they even have russian accents this far in the future?) and in the case of any ep with a woman, horribly sexist.
-
I'll probably go see this the day after tomorrow.
-
I just remembered that early eps of TNG actually had the miniskirt uniforms too, but they started phasing those out really early
-
They had them for the male crew as well. I distinctly remember it. None of the main cast, but extras.
-
where do you live that you got to see an advance showing
-
everywhere.
http://www.bigscreen.com/NowShowing.php?movie=startrek11&showdate=2009-05-08&view=sched
seriously there's a bunch of places, if you are near an urban area you can find one.
-
Most of the reviews I have been reading and listening too on the radio at work seem pretty positive so far. Most people saying it is a reimagining of the series not unlike the new Batman series, so at least there is good news there... Yep I will definately be seeing this next week since I can't this weekend :(
Also Chris, I am curious about how the acting is. I mean as much as I love Simon Pegg I just cannot see hime doing a good job playing scottie. And Harold from harold and kumar seems kind of out of place too...
-
Rotten Tomatos, 27/27 reviews so far. I haven't heard any bad reviews whatsoever besides a few complaints about character devleopment or w/e.
EDIT:
Just went up to 32/32!
-
Thanks for the heads up, P-Burn!
-

Would you believe it's part of a MySpace promotion in Australia! Fuckin' Australia.

Yeah Simon Pegg wasn't actually too bad. A bit sorta........ I dunno, eccentric? Definitely a lot of comedy focus, but he wasn't too bad, and you don't get to see a lot of him anyway. Harold really impressed me! I was thinking he would be terribly out of place but he totally held his own. Very impressed in his comedy and dramatic scenes, and he even gets to kick some ass in an action sequence fairly early on. There's another "main" character that's not really advertised (Chekhov? I'm not familiar with Star Trek AT ALL) that is also p. good, if not really overexaggerated. The cast is pretty strong all around; if anything, Quinto as Spock is a bit flat, though this could be to his character or maybe that I just have a bias toward the guy anyway. Oh actually Eric Bana as Nero was pretty terrible. I dunno, his acting was alright (tho pretty sketchy in places), but the dialogue was woeful. Jesus.
The movie was pretty much big dumb space-fun with a Star Trek label on it.
-
Spock is Vulcan and Vulcans believe in logic over emotion, they are supposed to be pretty cold and "flat" as a species. Leonard Nimoy brought a weird sort of charm with him as Spock (though Spock is half human), but it's hard to say if the new dude playing Spock FAILS at it... or gets it dead right, given the circumstances. I also haven't seen the movie yet.
Holy shit I just looked up who is playing Chekhov in this because I realized you're right and I haven't seen him in any trailers or ads and it's THIS GUY: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Yelchin for one he's three years YOUNGER than me and it's the dude from that fucking Justin Timberlake movie about the drug dealer. What a weird choice. I know this is YOUNG KIRK and stuff but this guy is like 19 isn't he? He's also got a bit of a babbyface going. How weird!
Oh he really is Russian. Like Steel said though, Chekhov is sort of a outdated character, created very PROGRESSIVELY considering he was Russian and created in the midst of the Cold War but it doesn't mean nearly as much today.
-
"So who're you?"
"CHIKHOEV, SIR"
"And how old are you Chekhov?"
"SIVINTEEN"
His accent is really very majorly overplayed.
-

Yeah I think one of the jokes about the original Chekov is is the accent. NUCLEAR WESSLES!!!
-
Definitely looks like they're trying to make Star Trek all cool now. And Budweiser? What the fuck? I'm interested in how they incorporate Nokia into this as well.
I never watched many episodes of Star Trek, but I just found like every original episode on Hulu (links to CBS). http://www.hulu.com/videos/search?query=star+trek This will be something to check out.
-
Saw it. It didn't even stink, it was just boring and hackneyed.
-
The product placement really upsets me. I'm a casual fan of TNG and Voyager, never really watched tos, but one of the bigger points of the series was that there is money, corporations, etc..etc... in the future. But product placement in any movie bothers me, so I guess I'm biased.
Oddly enough, the reason why I'm going to this movie opening weekend is to take my father-in-law. So I hope the whole THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER'S STAR TREK is wrong.
-
Is this worth the watch if your not a fan of the original Star Trek show?
-
Does Uhura get naked? :fogetnaughty:
-
how much deliberation and peace negotiations was there because thats what turns me on in space
-
I just saw it.
Jesus dude, I don't get how anyone could dislike this movie or think it's boring. I liked it a lot.
Not enough Sulu though. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with John Cho, his stature just didn't match George Takei's...
-
this topic made me kinda want to download TNG hahahaha. I haven't seen any episodes in so long
-
sorry I've got wrath of khan I don't need any more star trek films.
-
Why does everyone else except GW have beef with Star Trek?
-
Yeah, I agree with Psy, I really liked it! I thought most of the cast was well chosen the story was a little muddy but still interesting. They could've thrown in a couple more of the old catchphrases just for appeasement but overall I enjoyed it thoroughly.
-
I really want to see this but I have a question:
Does the Nimoy cameo fit? It seems really cheap to have the old spock show up because of time travel or whatever.
-
Nimoy's appearance didn't really bother me. I mean I don't know. The whole plot would be entirely different if his part didn't exist, he doesn't just show up, go "live long and prosper!" then fade away into mysterious, if that is what you're asking. He's got an actual role.
-
I'm trying to picture Karl Urban saying "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not a ____" but I just can't.
-
He says it all right.
-
Wow I'm Sorry, adeline. BEEN THERE, am I right, guys?
-
Honestly the actor for Bones was a bit out of place, I thought! Like he was a good actor obviously but he didn't really bring the charm I love from the original character.
-
I liked how they brought the red matter back in time but didn't keep it or use it to save the Romulins or whatever.
I've never been the biggest fan of Star Trek but I think I'd take any of the shows over this. It wasn't boring for sure but a good deal of it is just fan service. This isn't anything more or less than a Transformer movie.
-
I can't believe you put Transformers and Star Trek on the same wave length.
-
Sorry I meant not enough wessels, scratch that last post
-
I can't believe you put Transformers and Star Trek on the same wave length.
I saw this yesterday and imo it was pretty much Transformers 2007 in Star Trek's universe.
Whatever that means.
I really don't like the MODERN ACTION/COMEDY VIBE or whatever. This was way better than Transformers, though. But they kind of fit in the same ACTION TYPE VIBE or whatever, with that quirky modern hollywood humour and booming sub bass during action scenes.
Also there was kind of a subtle Starship Troopers vibe there at times, and the entrance to the snow planet base really seemed like a reference to Aliens. That's pretty cool.
-
Well, as long as you acknowledge that the flaws of Transformers are much much more prominent than that of Star Trek, then I'm fine. Yeah, I understand the whole re imagining super high teck CG guns shooting, but I found ST to be a higher quality, tighter, better written, better acted film all around. It didn't rely complete on shitty action and hot babe to sell or make the movie at all.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC73PHdQX04
this is highly illogical....
I'd quite like to see this movie but I'm going to wait and steal it instead. I'm a thief
-
Just watched this. Sure had a big CGI budget compared to the other episodes of the young indiana jones chronicles
-
When it comes to star trek, I know just about as much as a girl. Nothing! However, if you pass in 5 box tops of pop tarts you can get a free moive pass to see it. I'll probably do this.
-
I wish I had seen this thread earlier considering I was able to see Star Trek insanely in advance before it came out... For free, I might add. Twice.
Honestly, if you don't like Star Trek... Go see it.
If you're a Star Trek nerd... You'll love it. There's a lot of inside jokes and obscure references in the movie you have to pay attention to notice. Most of the inside jokes are rather obvious though. So if you don't know jack about Star Trek, expect to feel out of place when people start laughing at lines that wouldn't be funny under normal circumstances.
The movie is not a Retcon, in a sense, it's linear. Let's just say that the movie could spawn a whole new generation of Star Trek if it wanted to. There's plenty of complex nerdy stuff to play with if you're a writer.
-
If you're a Star Trek nerd... You'll love it
This isn't necessarily true.
The thing with this movie, as loads of people have probably pointed out, is that is doesn't have any ideas. Star Trek had ALWAYS (every second of it) been really dumb, but when it was dumb AND meant well with some kind of humanity all comes together to explore the universe and better ourselves message, then it worked. For me, at least. I saw an onion video which was like "Star Trek Fans are complaining about the distinct lack of preachy moralising!" and yeah, I kind of am complaining about it.
Star Trek is my dumb thing - I don't need it to be well written, well acted or whatever. I almost prefer it the way it is, or was. What I do need out of it is more than just explosions in space, hot young pricks being cocky, hollywood humour, 'epic' music, and so on. Most of the Star Trek movies have some of these elements in them, but they usually had other stuff in it as well. Whatever, though - I don't really like the Star Trek films. It was the episodes of TNG and DS9 that I liked mostly.
The reasons you know this movie isn't trying to be more than Transformers for 2009 is because it is totally empty headed and entirely focused on being a good summer blockbuster, which it will probably succeed at being. I mean just take Uhura - she's wearing that miniskirt again. The Original Series only kind of gets away with that because it was the 60's and back then putting a black woman on the bridge of a military ship was an audacious move. This movie doesn't get away with that, fuck off. Then there's the whole lack of currency in the future - where was it? It wasn't in the movie, in fact there were representations of modern day brands in this movie. Suddenly the future looks alot less exciting to me. And also, McCoy still being a racist (a vulcan racist, but whatever). In the 1960's racism was alot more accepted than it is today and McCoy represented a kind of good ole boy character from out west who would have been all right with racism. It made some of the worse elements of the Star Trek audience feel comfortable - congratulations on including that character trait in the new movie where it is just totally useless.
All the shit that should have been retained from the original series was dropped and all the stuff that should have been left in the 60's has been dragged forward.
So yeah the Transformers comparison is pretty accurate and while all Star Trek is dumb, this movie doesn't even try.
-

Man this is not true at all. I remember all of one episode of Star Trek ever out of the maybe five I've seen (hint: the Nazi one), but I'm pretty sure everyone ever is aware of Star Trek jokes! HEH....THAT GUY'S WEARING THE RED SUIT........HE GONNA DIE......
Every time I heard the Star Trek people in front of me laugh at some 'inside joke' I knew exactly what it was. I just didn't think they were all that clever and hilarious. "HERE'S A THING YOU RECOGNIZE...HEHEHEHH.....GET IT? HE SAID THAT LINE HE ALWAYS SAYS."
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this movie, but I really groaned at a lot of the fan service. Although I thought the Leonard Nimoy appearance wasn't that bad, since I thought they worked it into the plot fairly well (to the point where it actually MATTERED whether or not he was in it). Seeing him really made me want to play some Civ 4 though.
edit: Also fucking NOKIA ughgh that was the worst product placement I've ever seen. The Budwiser one wasn't that bad because idk people do drink it and drinks last a long time but phones? Are we really gonna have the dang default nokia ringtone at the same time we have TELEPORTATION???
-
i dont know any star trek jokes velfarre
-
Young indy finds his whip... so THAT'S how it happened lmao. Rearrangment of original theme music overlays the new music for a few seconds incase you missed it
-
WELL THE DARK KNIGHT IS A TERRIBLE MOVIE BECAUSE IT TRIES TO APPEAL TO THE MASSES RATHER THAN BLAH BLAH BLAH
You people are just mad because non-trekkies like it.
-
I quite liked it
-
This movie did not meet my trexpectations.
-
so can anyone tell me what star trek is about? like a synopsis of star trek so i get an idea of what this movie is going to be like because i might watch it.
-

It's a space opera where some guys on a starship need to defeat a badguy who wants to blow up planets??
-
I've never understood the appeal of it. I get the basic plot, but I always feel like there's something I'm missing because any generic space show would be as good as The Next Generation or the other ones, IMO. I have never seen the original star trek.
Most of all I don't understand why they've never put a little more money into the aliens' appearances. They're all guys with masks on!
-
i saw this today and it was pretty fantastic i was never really aquianted with the original series much (grew up on voyager and watched most of next generation) so I didn't have any personal attachments with the original cast all that much, but I still knew enough about them and their mannerisms to pick up on the references. Anyways, I thought that the movie was really good and even though I could tell when the movie was specifically pandering to the trekkies, I appreciated that the movie was more than just obscure original movie references and talk about the prime directive. It was a really good movie for the most part and I really enjoyed it
-
I'm just wondering why anyone would want to drink budweiser when you could easily get any other beer from Earth.
-
because bud's so crisp..
-

I hope you already have eaten 5 boxes of pop tarts because that would cost much more than the price of a movie ticket...
-
You're missing the point, I don't buy the poptarts around here, bub.
-
Just watched this. Sure had a big CGI budget compared to the other episodes of the young indiana jones chronicles
this is really good

Also, I like how everyone didn't feel the need to comment or really feel shocked that they were living in an alternate reality. It was for the most part "oh." Also, Nero I don't think was too impactful as a villain for those who didn't read the prequel comicbook. It gives insight and attachment to that character, whereas in the movie he was just Mr. Bad Guy with the sinister tattoos. They kind of failed on that end, but who cares? This is about Kirk and Spock.
-
I saw this today and thought it was pretty good. Some of the jokes made me laugh, whilst some seemed quite contrived. I laughed out laugh when the random nobody in a red suit died but found quite a lot of Kirk's cockyness over-playd and a bit hammy.
Overall, I enjoyed it, but not sure whether a sequel is necersarry as this movie only served as showing the backstory of the characters and where they came from. Now that this is told, I think the previous movies can tell the rest. Unfortunately they'll probably make a trilogy out of this. I see a sequel is already planned...

ummm the movie kind of set itself up for following ones, you know, considering that it kind of creates an entirely new universe

ahaha this is like the stupidest comment.
-
dont understand star trek continuity? eat shit and die, worm.
-
i've never watched anything star trek other than that khan movie. it's stupid because it's obviously a reboot and he's saying WELP THIS IS POINTLESS TO CONTINUE... THEY ALREADY DID OTHER MOVIES.
it's like if he went to see Batman Begins and thought heh they're making Dark Knight?? don't you know they already made Batman and Robin pleb..
-
weren't all the star trek movies past like the 3rd one direct to video anyhow? i am genuinely curious because i've heard there's 10 and each one was progressively worse
-
yeah, which is another thing I disliked about the movie. It's kind of annoying they did the whole parrellel universe story-line. It sort of seemed that they wrote it that way so they could get Nimroy to do a cameo and possibly to do new things with the characters that wouldn't exist in the original timeline. I sort of assumed the point of the movie was to show where the characters came from. Now we know, the future movies will just be standard missions like the old movies, which is quite redundant imo. If you disregard the parallel universe, it all ties up pretty neatly and runs into where the series begins. So yeah, this would have been better if they didn't do this
edit: stern I see your point, but some of the old star trek movies were pretty good imo (unlike batman and robin), and also this film seems more of a direct relation to the series (mainly becuase it has Nimroy in it and other small things that they put in to make it look like the old movies) whilst the new batman movies are completely different retelling of the comic. Whatever, I'd probably end up seeing the second one anyway, but I don't reckon it will be anywhere near as significient.
-

to be fair, i don't know whether this movie is a direct analogue to one of the previous ones. i really just hope they don't proceed to essentially remake the other movies (though i guess i wouldn't really care since i don't really remember what they're about) because that would be amazingly lazy.

They did the whole alternate universe thing to reintroduce the characters to a brand new audience, while at the same time keeping the new Star Trek in the existing canon. Basically, to appeal to both original and new fans.
And, because of that, they could fit Leonard Nimoy in a role (which is not a cameo), etc etc.
-
I saw it and I also thought the Nimoy thing was stupid. Like it was alright because it had to do with the villain for a while, but after the bad guy is dead, Nimoy just hangs around.
I really thought it was stupid that Nimoy makes this huge deal about not telling Spock that he's around, and then goes and introduces himself anyway.
Also, they needed to have like 20 more minutes of Sulu in the movie. I was waiting for more the whole time.
The whole theatre applauded when Scottie said "I'm givin' it all she's got, captain!"

true, but its a bit of a cop out just to make money. I dont really think we need to see more about the characters as they are all outlined in the other movies. Imagine they introduced an alternative universe in Star Wars episode III and just continued to make several new sequels with the same actors

weren't all the star trek movies past like the 3rd one direct to video anyhow? i am genuinely curious because i've heard there's 10 and each one was progressively worse
ahaha what

true, but its a bit of a cop out just to make money. I dont really think we need to see more about the characters as they are all outlined in the other movies. Exactly.
Money.
Studios, Hollywood, big action movies...
Money.

preposterous!

frY : you know what the worst thing about being a slave is? they make you work really hard, and they don't pay you any money!
leela : that's the only thing about being a slave!
-
yeah obviously I know its about money. It doesn't stop it being the right thing to do. I like this one becuase it has a purpose, but the rest are pointless cash cows.

im above making money

No, every Trek movie has had a theatrical release. And as to them being progressively worse, the best Trek was the 8th one, First Contact. There's something I've heard of that people call the Trek "Curse", and it's basically that every odd numbered movie is bad. This pretty much holds up - my favourite movies are 2, 4, and 8, and my least favourite are 3, 5, and 9.
And I just saw this tonight, and liked it for the most part. I think they actually handled the whole alternate dimensions thing really well. It allowed them to alter some stuff while also paying homage to the continuity and backstory of the franchise. The fact that Vulcan got blown up was kind of WHAT???. I'm a little shocked it's being rated and reviewed so highly, it didn't seem THAT far above your typical summer movie fare. But for what it's worth, I think it breathed some new life into something I wrote off as dead awhile ago.

Whoa... big surprise... Rowain AKA EasyPlease liked the first blockbuster of the summer. Color. Me. Fucking. Shocked.

erm.. its not the first of the season :sly:

Yeah, this curse is pretty well known. Ironically, Simon Pegg stated it ten years ago in a TV show called Spaced, and now he's actually in an odd-numbered Star Trek film.

It's the only blockbuster I'll even go to see!
I knew going into this I'd like it, they would've had to screw up in ways I can't even imagine for me to hate it.
Really though, the previews were for Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation, and G.I Joe (which looked the worst of the three) and I have zero attachment to any of these franchises and won't bother going to see them.

I saw the movie with my dad last night, we both loved it and although I was never interested in the original series I knew enough to know who was who.
I hear it got complaints because the technology looked too advanced compared to the original but my dad and me had no problem with what we saw although yeah its true it didn’t bother us in the slightest, anyway my dad was happy which makes me happy.
Thinking about it now a fair amount of people I know have gone to watch this movie with their own fathers. I suppose it actually does make for a good father and son movie.
-
God damn how could Wolverine's movie make 10kk more than this one in it's opening.

doesn't have sexy hugh jackman

I think you guys are overstating the quality of the Star Trek film.
The plot, in places, had some serious setbacks. Firstly, I would have done away with the first half of the first act. The blonde kid jumping out of the car was four completely unnecessary minutes. The son being born on the same day his father dies (on the same ship) was a bit much. The same thing goes for the fact that the Captain made cadet Kirk the first officer (for no apparent reason). (SPOILER HERE) Time-travel plotlines usually risk contrivedness and this one came very close. Too many "happy coincidences" had me rolling my eyes more than once.
In addition to this, the writers did not seem able to manage the characters. Urban's Bones McCoy was interesting at the beginning and actually took part in the plot until the mid-point, but his character was completely abandoned afterwards. Pegg as Scotty was meant to be a comic releif character, and had a couple laughable jokes but all in all they lacked punch and delivery and so he comes off as "wacky ethnic character #2". The dialogue was decent overall, but lacked memorability.
I've slammed the film a bit more than perhaps it deserves: it is on the side of the better "summer movies" I have seen in a couple years. The special effects were beautiful and spectacular, and never call attention to thier constructedness despite the fact that we are mostly looking at space explosions. I noticed some creative use of sound, attempting to simulate both the racket and ambience of space travel in the future, but it wasn't quite used to its full potential. I wonder if it is because of my familiarity with the franchise, knowing that the characters will probably all make it through in the end, or perhaps a growing jadedness towards the genre, but the action sequences didn't seem to pop out and grab me at all. Evidence of this is that my favourite part of the film was when Kirk's hands had swollen up after taking the injection. It was definetly entertaining and well produced, but I see it as dangerously close to falling into the mass of forgettable action films of the past 5 years (which Transformers 2 and G.I. Joe surely will). The film was decent, but at $25 dollars for theatre admission for me and a friend, I'm not sure if I can say that it was worth the price.
I give it a B/B+.
EDIT: I lol'd when I saw in the background of one of the earth cityscape shot a giant TACO BELL building, it reminded me of Demolition Man.

"Four completely unnecessary minutes" haha
-
I just watched this earlier today and I quite liked it. Overall, the acting was really well done. Eric Bana's role was pretty lousy though. It seemed like his primary focus in the movie was just to have a few "glare at camera angrily" shots.
I loved the part when the red suit guy died when they parachuted down to the drill. I saw that coming a mile away and I had to laugh. The moment I saw him sitting in the shuttle before they jumped, I knew what his fate would be. Haha.

So did everyone else. :(
-
well it was pretty damn funny
-
Agreed, it was pretty hilarious. Did the guy even have a name? It's like... Kirk, Spock, aaaaaaand guy in red suit.
-
yeah they said that somebody's signal was lost or something but I can't seem to recall the name, other than I believe that it began with the letter "m"
-
Just saw it yesterday (thoguh I feel like I'm decades behind the wave of people who saw it the first night). It was pretty kickass. I actually think it's one of the few movies I'd see in theatres more than once. :)
-

Olson would be the name of that unfortunate sap.
Man, imagine being cast for that role. "Yeah, you're going to have ten seconds of screen time and then you're going to die in a fire."
-
Can someone explain american tv for me quickly. All of the shit US shows I watch have finished simultaneously. Is it unlucky to play tv during the summer like it is to have a woman aboard a ship?

this.. this is kind of a thing, you know.

most major programs end over the summer, eg: the season ends and then the next season begins in the fall. its just kind of a thing because apparently nobody watches shows over the summer, although there are quite a lot of shows on cable networks that start up over the summer (and a few on the major networks, but nothing notable)
-
How can you say that Big Brother is not notable?! It's the hit tv show of the summer!!! :woop:

Get. BENT. MATEUI!!!!

"Four completely unnecessary minutes" haha
unrelated but there's a scene in LEFT BEHIND THE MOVIE where the camera is tripoded so it doesn't move or pan. kirk cameron walks onto the scene, looks out a balcony, waits a second, and then turns around and leaves and that's it. it was the funniest shit, just like twenty seconds of absolutely nothing. there's a bunch of them too where he just sighs and settles into a chair and it cuts to different characters doing things.
now THATS a real star's trek...
-
This movie was filled with plot holes. I couldn't point them out if you asked me to, but I could literally sense the plot falling apart as I watched it. It's like halfway thru production they were just like, "Screw continuity, we'll just make sure new and improved Kirk takes all the attention away from the lack of any sense in the main storyline and we're good to go!"
Why did Kirk randomly come across Old Spock on that ice planet?!?!? It was like they added him in at the last second and just spliced it into the film.
Also, when will hollywood stop using unadulterated black holes as time travel devices? You can't just pilot your spaceship into a black hole and expect to go anywhere other than CRUSHED IN A SINGULARITY. (I was actually surprised they used the word singularity at one point. Of course, that was the perfect time for McCoy to give his old "I'm a doctor, not a damned physicist!" speech. Even though a singularity is obviously the point of infinite gravity at a black hole's center that makes it what it is, every high school grad should know this today. . .are doctors really still gonna be stupid in the distant future?.)
I will definitely see it again just for the special effects, though. However, in a few years when they are obsolete I will easily forget about this rehashed sci-fi movie. It was pretty bad. Not that I didn't expect it to be.
-
my standards may be lowered because i've never watched a single star trek ep in my life and always thought it was really shitty etc like most people and i haven't really seen any BIG BLOCKBUSTERS recently or shit with CGI but i thought this was pretty awesome.
other than small nitpicks like lol nokia or why the hell DID he meet old spock on random ice planet V It Was A Very Enjoyable Film.
-
It explains why spock's there in the movie

Yeah, they should use more naked singularities.

and stars wouldn't move in the background and lasers wouldn't make sounds, no one actually cares about this.
it is when a movie breaks its own rules that you should be annoyed (ie my previous example where the nerds in a tv show don't know actual nerd shit) not when OH NO
PHYSICS!!!
Even though a singularity is obviously the point of infinite gravity at a black hole's center that makes it what it is, every high school grad should know this today
says a guy who is going to watch a movie again for lens flares.
-
Yeah, this movie was pretty cool, I'm going to see it again this weekend. Didn't mean to sound like a dick. I guess the black hole thing is annoying to me because if they did more with it it could have made the storyline a little more interesting. Like, I didn't hate the movie just for that, it was more a personal thing. Not that I am a physics genius or anything, but I have seen much better interpretations of time travel in science fiction movies. Basically, it was dumbed down like every other major film and that bothers me.
I will easily forget about this rehashed sci-fi movie. It was pretty bad.
I know I said this. . .meant to say the plotline was pretty bad. Good movie, average plot.
