Title: hello i am back [pictures]

i'm leaving for poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland) on monday. i'll be visiting family, traveling from place to place, taking pictures, and attempting to gain as much weight as possible.

I'll be back June 1st-2nd-ish.

i got a huge final tomorrow i need to study for, and then i go into PACK EVERYTHING IN ONE DAY mode.

if you have picture requests or something dumb, post them here. i'll prob. check back before I leave on monday.

my mom told me a story about when my brother was young and could hardly speak polish but knew fluent english and she took him to poland

that when he was talking people were shouting "GERMAN GERMAN" at him because he made no sense to them, and some kids put him up in a tree also shouting german(in polish)

please make a similar thing happen to you and take a picture of the people shouting under you while you are in a tree

yo poland is pretty awesome. i have been traveling all over southern poland hiking to the tops of many small mountains for the sole purpose of looking at cool views. i am very tired but its a lot of fun.

food is awesome. i have been taking lots of pictures. i see "babushkas" all the time but i am too shy to just snap a picture of a random one. i will try soon.

i probably won't have time to visit the desert but im going to krakow and oswiecim (auschwitz) next week. I haven't tried Lech yet but I do like Lezajsk a lot. drinking age 18 whoooo plus no one cards here. 14 year olds get served at discoteques/clubs.

ok really i only logged on to check the steel cancer topic to make sure he is doing ok, but this topic was tempting me. i tried to log in yesterday for the first time but the site wasn't working?????? it is probably this shitty internet connection.

Poland is the best. I didn't want to leave. My uncle drove me all over southern Poland and I took like 700 pictures. I will post a select few later.

headphonics: the racism is pretty bad. first of all, the polish word for "blacks" is "czarni" which makes me cringe every time I hear it (and believe me, I heard it a lot since apparently everyone I visited had the same question: "Are there any blacks where you live? How about at your college???" ). One of my family friends was exceptionally racist and kept making horrible jokes about black people that made me almost want to punch him in front of his kids.

1. Haircuts (~ $3)
2. Beer/Alcohol ($1.25 for a 500mL beer even at a BAR/CLUB!!)
3. Food/Candy
4. Almost everything else

Things that are expensive in Poland:

1. Some electronics (camcorders, high-end cell phones)


Most memorable events:

1. Went to a 3-hour televangelist-esque Catholic mass led by an exorcist. A priest (aka "hand of Jesus") grabbed my forehead and I got healed. I'm never getting cancer. Three old ladies around me fainted/passed out/fell onto the ground due to alternating between kneeling, standing, and crying for three hours. Everyone else, including my aunt and uncle assume they fainted due to Satan leaving their bodies
2. Visiting Auschwitz
3. Visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine





Man, I've got so many pictures it's ridiculous. I've been going through them for the past few days, trying to pick the best ones and cropping them and resizing them and fixing them up when necessary. I'm gonna post about 40 right now, and probably 80-90 more in the next couple of days.

hmm I went to Poland for two weeks when I was ten years old but I hated it at the time.  Of course I was 10 and a little asshole but looking at these pictures kind of makes me want to go visit again.  Get some culture.  I should probably relearn the language though.  Help me out here ase.

Also these pictures are beautiful but why are you all like "WOW NOW I'LL GO TO POLAND!" seriously go to any country in Europe with hills and that is what they look like. If you like Polish things go to Poland, if you like Czech things go to the Czech Republic, if you like Slovakian things go to the Czech Republic, if you like Austrian things to go to Austria... well, you get it.

I guess what I am trying to say is don't go to Slovakia!

well to be fair I'm polish so that kind of makes the most sense.  I didn't really read the rest of the topic so I guess other people have been saying the same thing?

When I went to Poland last year I was surprised at what a lovely and beautiful country it was. I only went to Krakow, but it was a really nice place, and certainly the train journey from Czech Republic into Poland gave me a chance to look at some really pretty countryside. I didn't get a chance to visit the salt mines, hope you post some pics of them! Where abouts in the country were you staying?

That church in the beginning of part 4 is absolutely beautiful, I can't stop looking at it. And the photo's really good too.

I took another look and it's so pretty. Not grandiose like those indoor pics of some other church later on, very intimate and very small-village-in-Poland.

man i have a polish friend and i went to his house the other day and it's so fucking typical polish from what i've seen! there's shit literally packed EVERYWHERE, there's stacks of food in every corner imaginable, everything is from costco, there's polish beer everywhere and everything is typical bad-taste eastern european furniture. Like "classical" style but combined in the most horrid ways imaginable, awful paintings hung on every wall, even shit on the ceiling, it's kind of ridiculous! minus all the STUFF it's pretty much like that in russia too but ya what's it like in polsha?

Everyone keeps their house meticulously clean! I haven't seen SHIT EVERYWHERE at all; that sounds like more of what what communist-era Poland was like, as everyone hoarded everything they could get their hands on in case of shortages. My mom went to Poland in April and took some indoor house photos, I think, so maybe I'll post those later. I don't know. There isn't really any recurring indoor theme other than religious icons being all over the walls.
