Title: Webcomics
Post by: the_hoodie on May 09, 2009, 11:21:15 pm
I've been reading a lot of webcomics lately, and thought they could use some discussion here on GW.

I'll start with some of my favourites:

Least I Could Do (http://www.leasticoulddo.com/): While generally quite crude, it is also absolutely hilarious. The art and characters are great, as well as the writing. Also offers the occasionally political comment and can be quite nerdy at times. I love this one.

Cyanide & Happiness (http://www.explosm.net/comics/): How could I not mention this? It's a classic and never ceases to put out great material.

Ctrl+Alt+Del (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/): While not always funny, it has good characters and storylines, and I enjoy reading it.

Now, what are your favourite webcomics, GW?

My favorite webcomic is Buttersafe

http://www.buttersafe.com/

Its pretty neat, its got two artists who make different styled single paged gags. Its similar to like XKCD in the tone of the humor except its not nerdy jokes and its funny (heh get it I just said xkcd isn't funny (just kidding xkcd can be funny sometimes but its mostly hit and miss))

I also read

Abominable Charles Christopher http://horhaus.com/abominable/
Cool story-based comic with a realistic art style about a yeti-like monster in a world with talking animals.
Gunnerkrigg Court http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php
Cool story-based comic with a fairy tale-like art style about a girl in a harry potter like school except its cool
Horribleville http://horribleville.com/
Autobiographical-ish short stories comic by KC Green, his art is cool and hes funny.
Girly http://girlyyy.com/
Story-based comic with a cool, expressive cartoon style, with lesbians and cats and whatever.
Sam and Fuzzy http://www.samandfuzzy.com/
Black and white story-based cartoony comic about a guy and a talking bear, can be pretty funny, and the art improved a lot as time went on.
DrMcNinja http://www.drmcninja.com/
Adventures of a ninja, story-based, its cool and funny and not as dumb as it might sound though its still a bit dumb.
Kinokofry http://kinokofry.com/
Cartoony and cute single page gag comic with mushroom people and cool watercolor art sometimes.

achewood, kate beaton history comics, overcompenstating, and white ninja are the only ones i keep up with on a semi-regular basis (and by that i mean i check every week or so when i'm not doing anything because i hate getting one comic at a time).

i used to read dr mcninja because it somehow succeeds as a funnier thing than you'd expect from the sum of its parts (NINJAS???PIRATES?? LOOOOOOOOL!!!) but doesn't he update like once a month? i stopped caring about it a long time ago anyhow.

-rob and elliot
-questionable content
-jerkcity
-buttersafe
-xkcd (can be good and bad)
-pictures for sad children
-f-minus (newspaper comic but it is available online too and it has that "webcomic" feel to it)
-overcompensating (its okay)
-PHD comics
-cyanide and happiness (can be really funny or really horrible)

yeah and probably a bunch more that i can't think of

CAD has never been funny, self-insert, can't even get nerd humour correct, Buckley can't draw for SHIT ( B^U is his only expression), gets sexist, tried to introduce a MISCARRIAGE storyline Well I'm Sorry 'Bucky' But the Only Mis-Carriage is Your Comic!!! heyo, Buckley is arrogant as all hell, aaa it goes on but I've not looked at it for a while.
I've gotta leave pretty much NOW (happy mother's day!!!) so someone else can probably do a better, less-rushed summary.

Yeah, I just... tried to read CAD and read about 6-7 comics and not even one of them made me smile in the slightest. Why is this comic so popular.

I read Buttersafe (http://buttersafe.com/) and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (http://www.smbc-comics.com/) every couple of days.

EDIT: Used to read Perry Bible Fellowship (http://www.pfbcomics.com) fervently until he stopped updating.

SA is on its third thread (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3117678), and actually got quite tired of it for a while since they made TOO MANY jokes about it.

I want you to contemplate that fact for a moment.

The Abominable Charles Christopher (http://www.abominable.cc/2007/06/20/episode-1/) is a really good one that I never hear internet jerks chattering about. The guy who draws it is an actual, professional comicbook artist so it looks really nice, but he only updates once a week. I like to check up on it every couple of months!

Also Eegra's comics (http://www.eegra.com/show/sub/do/news/cat/comics/id/45) are pretty cool if you like videogames and don't drink your own piss. This one (http://www.eegra.com/show/sub/do/browse/cat/comics/id/11) is my favorite

I'm physics student, An Introduction to XKCD and Understanding Advanced XKCD are compulsory courses for me.

I still sometimes read some old Perry Bible Fellowship, but other than that, nothing. From what I've seen the famed Penny Arcade is pretty boring and friend of mine kept linking Ctrl+Alt+Del to me, which is absolutely horrible. Oh, I once read through Gone with the Blastwave (http://www.blastwavecomic.com/index.php?p=comic&nro=1), which is mostly decent and hasn't been mentioned yet. Contrary to most webcomics, the guy can actually draw.

BAH at SA. they aren't really all that funny. SA also kind of come off to me as full of complete dicks.

Then again CAD fails as well... I read it anyway though...

New comics I may add now that you guys have brought them to my attention: 'Eegra' and 'Cyanide and Happiness'

I think the only one I read that's not listed is GREAT (http://kiwisbybeat.com/) by the guy who did Minus.  Besides that, I read:

Achewood
The Abominable Charles Christopher (surprised this has been listed so many times already!)
SMBC
Eegra
Dinosaur Comics
Thinkin' Lincoln
Garfield Minus Garfield (does this count?)
Buttersafe
Toothpaste for Dinner
Married to the Sea

TFD and MttS are horribly hit or miss though.  And even at that they're not very HILARIOUS, the last one of either that I remember laughing at was shave that unibrow (http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/102708/shave-that-unibrow.gif).

Also guys I am pretty sure PBF is over, I don't think he is working on them anymore!

oh man MINUS that was so good! i think i'll start reading that comic by the same person, i loved Minus so much <3
another one i forgot: http://www.pear-pear.com/ read them from the beginning. there's no words on the site or in the comics so it can be read by anyone. it's really cute and interesting.
Garfield Minus Garfield is pretty funny too even if it barely counts as its own comic.
y'know, a lot of people like achewood but i've never really been able to get into it. i've seen some comics that were great from it, but it just never held my interest. meh.
man legorobot comics is just so INTERNET. i read every single comic for some reason though, so i guess it's not horrible on its own... but i just hate how it has turned the internet into "REESE'S PUFFS FOR BREAKFAST?!?!?!"
http://www.bigfatwhale.com/ is pretty good too. it's the only sometimes-sort-of-political comic that seems very original to me.

Tiny Kitten Teeth (http://www.tinykittenteeth.com/) will give you diabetes.

Rice Boy and Order of Tales (http://www.rice-boy.com/) created a unique fantasy world without resorting to Tolkien copying

Dawn of Time (http://www.dawnoftimecomics.com/) doesn't have much of a point but it's fun to read.

North World (http://north-world.com/) is a long running modern fantasy.

GastroPhobia (http://gastrophobia.com/) seems to have stopped updating but it's set up like an episodic Saturday morning cartoon show

white ninja is actually good its dom approved

but overall the taste displayed in this thread by everyone is really awful

hers the list of current acceptable webcomics In My Opinion:

hark a vagrant
dinosaur comics
white ninja
horribleville/gunshow/etc (kc green)
pictures for sad children
jerkcity (but only if u actually 'get it'/ PRO TIP: most of you dont get it and it is fast on its way to leaving this category!!)
probably a couple more i forgot maybe

stuff that is not acceptable that maybe u didnt realise:
achewood (i literally wipe Shit off my butt with achewood comics strips. i spent $500 a year on toner to do htis. i used to like achewood before i realised how bad it actually is. also, chris is a huge freakin tool who would charge his readers $50 for a jar of his piss if he could get away wtih it. this is not a joke.)
smbc (feh. not terrible but average and predictable. it is too generic)
garfield minus garfield (shut the FRICK up about garfield basicaly. )
married to the sea (occasionally makes somethign really funn but is really just drew I CAN MAKE POLITICS JOKES.. WATCH *makes a joke about georg bush being poop. TFD is ok but weak now.)

ANYTHING ELSE NOT MENTIONED IS PURE TRASH basically. thats my analysis of Internet Comics.

I read the entire thing in a day and I don't like webcomics or even comics at all, although I felt like things sort of fell apart at the end. It is very good though!!

Sluggy Freelance: http://www.sluggy.com/

My god I just started reading and i've got over a thousand to go, perfect brain killer I say.
it isn't very good, i read through all of it back in umm well around seven years ago. the best? only good? one had that rabbit and there was good use of color

something positive is slightly better, i read that about five years ago. i forget the name of the shitty one by jeph jacques but that one is a lil shitty. questionable content.

i read through all of gunnerkrigg court the other day and it's better for killing time. actually interesting.

A lot of the mentioned ones I read, about half of them for content and the other half because I like the art.

One thing I don't think was mentioned is www.asofterworld.com, especially for those who like Dinosaur Comics and Dr. McNinja this is a must! Also www.harkavagrant.com, which is Kate Beaton who is amazing.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned Templar, Arizona (http://templaraz.com/) yet. (Occasionally nws but not porn. Currently there's a naked fat guy on the front page.)

By the way, the new Gunnerkrigg bonus comic is already shaping up to be awesome.

snafu-comics is run by this circle of deviantart comic artists bent on segregating the online art community.

pretty much any of the comics you get there are easy on the eyes but are actually about as good as an aftertoon of toon disney.

after you have read raine dog please read the news post:

Quote
If anyone really does think that, I have to ask: do you read Nabokov's Lolita and think he's advocating pedophilia? Do you read Dickens's Oliver Twist and think he's advocating selling children on the street, or picking pockets? Do you read Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and think she's advocating necrophilia? Do you read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and think she's advocating legalized rape?

In other words, do you go through life constantly assuming that anything that's presented in fiction is a full-throated endorsement of that behavior in real life? I very much doubt you do.

For that matter, since, sadly, not enough people actually read books...do you watch "Family Guy" and think that, because Brian the dog regularly dates, and sleeps with, human women, Seth McFarlane is therefore "advocating bestiality"? Yes, it's "just a cartoon." So is this.

ahh yes not enough people read actual books *knows nothing about anything*

also if you guys want I actually know lots of legitimately terrible comics, not like DUNGEON WARDEN but shit that is horrifying on levels etc like raine dog do you want me to post them (ps they are actually the kind of thing where you are like man humanity really at a few points but usually sans nudity/gore which is what usually makes you think this)

basically do you want to see the worst???

*unlocks the dark vault*

okay first off a lot of people do not seem to know this so I'm going to share this story.

a while back this woman named Jade Raymond was hired by the Assassin's Creed people to be their lead. Raymond didn't have the best credentials but looked a bit okay so gamers started saying LOOK AT THIS THEY HIRED A SLUT. I should point out as far as I know Raymond did nothing to deserve this other than 1. take a job and 2. look normal. a guy named Dave Cheung did a pretty disgusting comic where it showed all these fat nerds being sucked off by Raymond, ending with a bukakke and BUY ASSASSIN'S CREED.

I'd like to reiterate: Raymond did nothing to deserve this at all! now what happened afterwards got a bit of netpress because some dude at SA posted it and Ubisoft tried to cease and desist it, all of which is rather stupid and they deserve the response blah blah but here is the aftermath:

-no one stopped buying Assassin's Creed.
-Jade Raymond still has an unfair reputation of being an industry whore, and all the nerds clapped each other on the back
-Dave Seung got a lot of nerd pride and still has about five hundred megs of child porn out there WHOOPS.

yeah the guy who drew the original comic was for years one of the biggest pedo artists out there. look up Scribblekid if you really want but I have my limits. there's fucking loads of it. in a nice twist by the way, his terrible comic for years charged you like twenty dollars and you got a picture of one of his characters in a bikini or showing her panties. he also filled his comic with that shit, you can go look at that terrible fucking thing but it's boring as shit. it's called Chugworth Academy.

basically a pedophile accused an otherwise innocent woman of whoring out for the industry while dressing his characters in scantily clad outfits and begging for money.

that's not even one of the ones I was thinking of, but it's a good intro into the kind of person we're dealing with here as Seung btw has published a book of Chugworth Academy.

here's ED's terrible entry about it where they ignore the fact that they have Seung's art under webcomics as an example of violence and child porn (calling him a "webcomic artist"). idk if there's something to sperg about it's the high horse a pedo has over a fucking employee. http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Ubisoft#Jade_Raymond

okay now let's get to the great shit.

-a popular trend in webcomics is to start out with a gag comic and slowly fall into horrible drama plotlines. a good example is the atrocious Ctrl Alt Del miscarriage plotline, something so bad Buckley not only saw a so far permanent hit in visitor numbers but has been deinvited from comic book expos and basically become known as a joke. it is because webcomic authors mostly suck at everything.

Squidi became famous back in I think 01, and our own Hiretsukan had a part in it! Squidi made a sprite comic that he insisted was pixel art. so when a Penny Arcade member used one of his characters for a template, he contacted PA with a legal threat. bad move, as a bunch of people started to steal his sprites. turns out Squidi is a humorless dick, and Hiret made a squidi character generator that got passed around and Squidi ran away and most everyone forgot about him BUT NOT PEO!!!

Squidi tried to relaunch his comic a few times until he realized when he was just running a shitty (http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?ep=2&id=23) (look at those gradients man. also for a pixel artist, he sure didn't notice his eyepatch was moving (http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?series=amd&ep=1&id=1)) gag strip he had more of an audience and went back to it but decided it's time for a horrible plot again!

okay just context: this isn't the first time Squidi has "challenged" his audience. here is a completely out of place swear: http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?series=amd&ep=2&id=89
here is the pixel artist showing us not one http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?series=amd&ep=2&id=79 but two massacres of innocents http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?ep=1&id=246 so much...blood...

okay I'm getting bored but he also tackles wonderful issues like abortion and actually had a sidecomic that is just the gooniest fucking thing and you're like UGH YOU SAY THAT ABOUT EVERYTHING but click this shit: http://www.squidi.net/comic/aaa/index.php

but none of this compares to what I'm about to link. I'm not even going to provide context, okay, just remember this was not done as a joke!

http://www.squidi.net/comic/amd/view.php?series=amd&ep=3&id=85

go forward about two clicks and you will experience a wonderful time.

the only reason squidi hasn't become a name with anyone is because after his comic collapsed the first time almost no one remembered him but me and so you can see his decline into insanity.

jesus christ that took longer than I thought I will speed this up.

-Goblins (http://www.goblinscomic.com/) first came into the limelight when fairly terrible webcomic Order of the Stick got popular and people started looking for their next fix of stupid D&D jokes. it has the quickest turnaround from comedy to drama I've seen in a while but HOLY SHIT this is one ugly piece of shit. every character is melted. why!!! I'm not even sure if the artist is talented because EVERYONE HAS A MELT FACE. it's also unbelievably violent. I don't mean that as an exaggeration, I mean the violence is honest to god unbelievable because the characters still shout D&D shit like I'VE TAKEN -5 DAMAGE while someone is impaled through the throat and gags out blood. I mean holy shit this thing is ugly and violent. his money shilling gimmick is pretty awful too; he puts some fan character named Tempts Fate against supposedly unbeatable puzzles and you have to donate up to some amount to see how Tempts Fate will get out of it. it's pretty awful.

but Goblins is particularly amazing not just because of little ugly meltface people killing each other in the worst ways possible (flip to like any page seriously, he has prolonged torture scenes and everything) but because of an SA thread that I think everyone here passed around. the thread was something like WHAT IMAGE ALWAYS MAKES YOU CRY NOT FROM SADNESS BUT FROM ITS POWER and it was mostly stupid shit like a soldier crying from his dead buds or whatever but then someone posted this and it was honestly the funniest fucking thing at the time:

http://www.goblinscomic.com/d/20061223.html

th...thank you blobbo.

-lastly here is a good one that I also don't need to write much about. Better Days[url=http://www.jaynaylor.com/catalog.html]furry porn] is Jay Naylor's sideproject. I say side project because the dude makes a comfortable living selling LOTS of [url=http://www.jaynaylor.com/catalog.html]furry porn (http://www.jaynaylor.com/betterdays/), I mean, fucking loads of this shit.

Naylor himself, by the way, is completely fucking insane. I mean he's a confurvative, somehow more CONSERVATIVE than he is furry, and his shitty webcomic reflects it. it's also pretty racist, sexist, hell any negative you want to apply fits, so I'm just going to link this pretty good break down instead of doing it myself: http://www.crushyiffdestroy.com/show/bdays

what's great about better days though is an arc the writer of the above missed. once again I don't want to spoil this incredible shit so I'm just going to link the whole chapter.

http://www.jaynaylor.com/betterdays/archives/chapter-10-brothers-arms/

he also did draw a porn comic about this I can't find so no the implication is not something only you are picking up!

that's three and I'm tired but if you spent an hour in the archives of any of these sites your head will probably feel really bad for the rest of the day.

i did it rajew...so others dont have to *smiles knowingly, melts face off with butane torch*

edit what makes goblins so perturbing is that they keep the fucking D&D jokes around during the violent shit. it's just really the most surreal thing and makes it all so much worse. like if you watch a rape it's bad but it's worse when the rapist moans MOMMY. one of those feelings.

this webcomic equals hypothetical rape watch...

Also the naga in recent strips who is the "slave" of some ranger dude. he keeps her on a leash in skimpy NAGABRA. get serious vibes from that shit.

also isn't squidi that guy who tried to make 300 game ideas in a month or something, and most of them were the same idea but slightly expanded upon changed and then he gave up at 150 or something?

Ps. I used to read A Modest Destiny and I totally never saw that stuff you linked! Wow!
The sprite thing you're talking about though is kind of shitty. Regardless of how much effort it took him to make the sprites, they were still HIS, and taking them warnt cool. Aside from Modest Destiny he had a space comic I think that was joke-a-day format and iirc it was much better.

he also had no cause for legal action and no one took his sprites at all. someone MASSIVELY edited it, to the extent only Squidi noticed and it was because one character didn't have edited shoes. that's not good enough to file for copyright for a pixel image online.

this wasn't a case of konix's tree being straight up jacked. this was like...god I wish I had his comparison image, because you could see how ridiculous he was being. the guy even said "oh whoops, I didn't know it was such a big deal" when it happened, but Squidi is such an unbelievable piece of shit he had already threatened legal action.

he's also somewhat famous in the pixel art community for taking absolutely no criticism whatsoever from more talented people.

I've been reading questionable content (from the start) off and on for the last week out of some sort of morbid fascination. It's such a GARBAGE webcomic, and the creator such a douchebag that I can't help but be intrigued. He posts the most obnoxious shit in the news section of his website. and the entire comic seems to be about EVERY GIRL fawning over MARTEN, the dreamy starving emo dickwad. Sorry, indie hipster. Also female character despite being like 25, refers to men as "boys" all the time like some junior high girl. There's so much about the strip that irks me, there's like a compulsion to continue reading and hurting myself.

It might actually be a girl, I don't know, all i see is J. JACQUES plastered everywhere and I have no clue if that's Jeff or Josephine or Jessica or Jean or what. It'd be a little less pathetic if it was a girl because at least then she's just made up her FANTASY GUY (Marten) and not actually channeling a secret desire to be an indie sex image.

This just in: it`s a dude http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeph_Jacques

Cracked.com is always posting webcomics, but most of them suck.

Daisy Owl is the worst though.  I don't have the link for it, but it seems like every single joke in it is an inside joke.  Like you had to read the comic from the beginning to understand the characters in order to get the jokes.  I have yet to laugh at any of them.

Really, is that the punchline?  "He died the way he lived -- as laundry"?  Does someone here find that funny?  Do I just not have a sense of humor?

The other one Cracked posts is called Subnormality (yeah, you know what group of people that is already).  I'd post one of them, but they're fucking HUGE comics, with a shit ton of text.  I'm getting pretty sick of post-modern comedy.  It's not even comedy.

the only part I found funny is that he had the dog spayed and now he has her taking estrogen to make up for the lost hormones.

What? I figured that was a scar from a regular spaying. I don't think they sewed up the dog's vagina

do you mean thought provoking as per the comic or thought provoking like what must this guy's life be like that he is imagining things like these?
