I was browsing Digg tonight and found an article circulating, thought it would promote some discussion:
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D984SLN80&show_article=1
This Chicago couple has decided to shop exclusively at black-owned businesses for an entire year. I, personally, couldn't care less, but some folks are thinking this will start some kind of movement, while others are kind of pissed. Definitely a touchy subject. The couple says that the black entrepreneur community is under-represented, and they've gone as far as going without needed medications for an evening rather than shop at a "white" establishment to keep with their vows. I can understand their views, but the fact that they're practically boycotting any other establishment at their own expense baffles me. This might have been relevant during the desegregation era, but it seems kind of pointless now. Don't get me wrong, though, I think everyone should be aware of just who they're buying from, for better or worse. Just wondering what everyone thinks about this.

Pfft, racism in the marketplace ended 50 years ago.
Your link didn't work for me, but this could border on impossible depending on what your definition of 'run' is. Technically most small entrepreneurial ventures are owned by banks, and larger enterprises are owned by shareholders or are part of a franchise.
-
also depends on how narrow your requirements for 'black' are i suppose.
-
Link is still up and running for me. Apparently they're miffed because they couldn't find a black-owned Walgreens nearby, and they travel 14 miles for "black" groceries.
-
Stuff like this keeps racism fresh and alive... people continue to set lines between colors and although they may think they are helping I surely doubt they are.
-
They seem modern enough, do they understand that from a modern scientific approach there is no objective method for determining which race a certain genepool belongs to.
Any distinction that leads them to say one person is "black" and one person is not "black" is completely arbitrary. Although at it's heart, I reckon they have good reasons for being so discriminate with exactly who they support.
I mean for instance, it must be hard for ugly people to make it in the world as entrepenurs, given the prejudices society places against people who happen to be judged as "ugly" for reasons hopelessley beyond their control. I think I am only going to do my business with stores owned by ugly people so they have a better chance at becoming business owners.

Edit: well I guess its true if you exclude the labor market

This is not relevant to my interests.
Therefore I am a racist.

i don't understand your confusion about this. they're going by the age-old definition of "YOU AIN'T WHITE". and then they're also discluding asians.

Every time racism is brought up on gaming world a lot of people end up making pretty racist posts, but legitimately believing them to be innocuous statements.
I hope that happens with this thread. It's pretty 'lol' if you don't mind me saying.
-
I only shop at stores owned by octoroons.

Why can't I say the N word when they say it all the time?

sorry my humour tends to be a little dark
-
Is this about black, dark-brown people, chocolate-black, chocolate-brown, average brown, light black (gray?) or light-brown people? Cause I dislike one of the colors.

Some guy I knew at my school tried to make a Caucasian club but the school said no because it's racist. Yet there's an African-American club and Arab club.... ummmmmmm
-
Ok I know you guys are posting the "but if we had WHITE ENTERTAINMENT, ITD BE RACIST" thing ironically and all, but could someone run the reason that point is stupid by me real quick?
-
99% of marketing and television shows are aimed towards white culture and white people anyway

99% of marketing and television shows are aimed towards white culture and white people anyway
While probably true, It is almost just the title "White television" that screams "This is a channel for racist people" to some people. When you think "Black power" and "White Power" White power is almost always thought of as a racist slogan, while Black power doesn't really have that "racist feel".
and I'd say it is because of actual White Supremacists shouting that all the time, but I gotta say, "White Might" or "White Strength" etc. would bring about the same feeling.
There really isn't a single white "culture" though and that might make it seem worse. Like when you say "Irish power" or "English power" it starts to sound significantly less bad.
Though I notice that a lot of people don't like it when a white person refers to themselves as part of one of these cultures. Instead opting for thinking NO YOUR A WHITEY.
Edit: Maybe this is because I live in the US? and you can't say no I'm not <insert race/color of skin/genetic origin here>, I'm American without sounding like a moron...

lol thread (fyi pog a lot those posts are jokes that went over your head) but
I don't think 99% of advertising aimed at white people. they specifically take this shit into consideration. also I don't think like oxyclean targets any specific race
my sister had a class where they broke down what black people like and how you can get them to buy your products, she was telling me about it and it was funny as hell. I couldn't believe they teach this shit
-
she's doing advertising? ouch.
-
It's all about the fried chicken

no, something else. I don't remember because she always abbreviates it. a dual major and one of them has to do with marketing.
-
sometimes i consider going back to school and getting a second degree in marketing because I would graduate at the top of my class
-
vaunce your site is like craigslist except that there are no postings. are you a joke account or is this some new service you're trying to compete against craigslist with? i like vaunce.tv though.
the lady herself said that shes suffering from it so why do it? is media attention really that important. I would consider her a racist myself.
-
You know what thay say once you buy Black you never go back. :fogetguns:
I think this is a stupid media Stunt and really believe it not worth doing at all. Because it is obviously giving her and her husband trouble and there really is no benfits for doing so other then publicity.
-
What makes you say that? Marketing is not easy and it takes a long time. They teach you all the crap that is not working but it did in 1950's
I did marketing for half a year until I became so disillusioned that I left. It was really nothing special. There were a few people there who actually were creative and could come up with good ideas but most of my classmates were seriously idiots. I remember doing a presentation with three others and having to help all of them because they could not clearly explain our concept or the reasoning behind it in plain Dutch.
I'm sure there are good marketing educations out there, but mine wasn't one of them despite the fact it was being taught in a good college. For some reason I suspect it's something more fundamental.
EDIT: I should clarify that being good at marketing is extremely difficult. But being on the top of class is not.
-
Well, it's an experiment. If this is how they decided to live for the rest of their lives, it'd be pretty dumb. They're not really starting a movement and they're only inconveniencing themselves. Furthermore, what are they trying to prove when they buy only from businesses owned by black people? I don't understand their aim. If the black entrepreneurial community is lacking, couldn't that just mean that some blacks who are capable of owning companies or franchises simply don't want to? Owning your own business isn't the mark of success that people make it out to be. You can be just as happy, or happier, when working for *gasp* the man, or the business's equivalent. And, hell, if your product is good I'm pretty sure no one is going to care what color the creator is. I'm sure people would have gone just as batshit insane over [insert ][/insert] if it was pioneered by some black/Asian/hispanic person. Hell, it might have been. I don't think people look too much into these things.
Sure, more black people should go to college or whatever and earn degrees that could potentially help them start a company (well, in theory; if every person from a minority group that's underrepresented in the field of higher education suddenly went and got their degrees, finding jobs would be hell), but owning a business isn't the only way to achieve the American dream.
/ideological tangent
These people would be much better off advocating higher education for black people. Or, hell, they could go to Africa and persuade people to start up businesses there.
Also, lol, 14 miles is kinda nothing. I don't see why it's called an "odyssey".
