Title: beating pain without abusing painkillers
Post by: Carrion Crow on May 17, 2009, 01:08:58 am
Ok so I have exams right now and one of my wisdom teeth is playing a painful song with the nerves in my mouth pretty much 24/7. I know it will prolly calm down when the goddam thing is finally though but I really don't want to abuse my liver by taking too much pain meds. I also need to concentrate during the day as well as manage to sleep at night but at the moment I am pretty distracted and its counterproductive in me passing and not being an epic failure.

So basically, if you've had experience with toothache of this kind: what did you do about it and what was the final result?

I am not entirely sure there is space in my mouth for these wisdom teeth. They are both partially impacted but only the left one is hurting at the moment. I just can't seem to switch my brain off while it's droning away :(

* the reason i am being so arsey about painkillers is that a friend of mine took ibuprofen for an extended period and ended up with a stomach ulcer and then got put in hospital with pneumonia when he started chucking up blood so I would like to avoid that. I wanna go an see star trek at the end of next week when exams are over, I'm not too keen on spending that time watching a dentist cut my molars into slices for easy removal whilst I sound like little nicky for the week after. I am pretty fucking squeamish as in I am ok with videogame gore but in real life anything remotely like that puts me out like a light.

I'm not taking advice from someone who has ten plays of Hanson in their last.fm signature. Call it self preservation. If Mark came along and told me to kiss a falling anvil whilst chewing nuts and bolts I would probably take him more seriously.

I'll just ask Vin Diesel if he has any spare...

cloves work but taste nasty and they don't work for very long! i had an infected tooth and tried some. they take the sting away but they taste gross and kinda burn anyway.
my solution was a box of ibuprofen and a trip to the dentist BUT there's some stuff called bonjella i think that's for teething infants that would have been perfect in my situation.

All my tooth aches were handled by shoving the tooth with my tongue and increasing the pain to enormous degrees, it made the feeling of the toothache just a slight annoyance after that unless I ate something and chewed.

I had your exact same problem.  Set an aspirin over the offending tooth area and just let it dissolve.  It will taste like shit, but your pain should go away.
I had 4 ingrown wisdom teeth and they hurt like shit!  Amazingly, the pain was manageable by the third day.  I didn't even experience swelling.  Just make sure you keep your mouth clean, I hear dry sockets are no good!

No, it's common knowledge that you use clove oil when your wisdom tooth is hurting. Mine was growing in a couple weeks ago and I used clove oil. It really works but it makes you go numb and skin in your mouth come off. It tastes horrible.

Uhh, when was the last time you visited the dentist? They should be doing xrays and deciding whether or not to remove your wisdom teeth which as far as i can see need to be taken care of...

in fact i'm getting mine out this wednesday and it's totally going to suck but they give me nitrogen oxide and then a buncha painkillers so it should be alright

bonjella is also useful for mouth ulcers to seal them up and stop them rubbing against teeth, so it's not just for kids

I am gonna get some of this magical bonjela stuff. Damn pharmacies and their not-being-open-on-sunday-ish-ness!

I am gonna stagger doses of paracetamol/ibuprofen so I don't have too much of either and just leave it the fuck alone.

@FlowerPower: I had XRays the last time I went to the dentist and my wisdom teeth were fully formed, just about 1/2 a cm below where they were supposed to be. His general conclusion was that "they gonna come through soon son" £20 please kthxbai.

So yeah if you go to buy aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen all together in a UK branch of tescos they will only let you have 2 of the three.

I'm okay (I promise)

I just endured the pain when my wisdom teeth were coming in. I tried taking some painkillers once but they didn't seem to help. I think the pain stopped when I was rinsing my mouth and I spat out what seemed to be a piece of my gums. My dentist says everything seems fine, though. I think they're still coming in but I don't feel any pain from them anymore.

Just have ice cubes in your mouth often, it numbs your gums. I had two wisdom teeth come through and it was sore as fuck but only lasted like 3 weeks.

epic
good luck with your pills and all, but I've got a question that's kinda off topic.

where does this "epic" stuff come from and why do i see it pretty frequently(and exclusively) on the internet? is it the new "PWNED"?

It's almost as if I have picked up colloquialisms from the people I talk to. Shocking!

First "gash", now "epic". Looks like I'm a bit special olympics with words.

Yeah I am being forumbitchy right now because it is 6am and my gums feel like they have been soaked in battery acid. Take a ticket.
