bit surprised by this germany v argentina match so far. germany are walking the ball into the net, it just seems too easy for them. i was sorta expecting it to be the other way round.

regardless of all this, Germany won't win.

It is mostly definitely a South American team this year imo

I don't think the players are to blame really. I think the manager has a lot to answer for. If you can't direct Rooney into a formation that is completely devastating then you are obviously a silly handbag face.

The whole telling the players if they are playing 2 hours before the game strategy is dumb.

If you watch them play they hold no formation. There's no two banks of four at the back until the very last moment.

Don't pin this on Wayne. Watching England fans blame the players like that and actually BOO them just makes our country look like a bunch of cunts. I guess most travelling ingurland fans are, by the stereotype, loud, fat wankers who really make our country look bad.

I blame Capello. Suck on it.

Can you honestly blame the manager though? The England manager ALWAYS gets blamed, just look at Sven, he got us to three quarter finals and he still gets called a "shit England manager". Some of Capello's decisions are totally wrong, that is true, why not just play Gerrard behind Rooney ala Liverpool style? Stop playing Wright-Philips, he is shit, and play Joe Cole instead! There are various choices he's made that are poor.

However, imo, the main reason is:

The England I saw on Friday night looked completely devoid of passion or care. They were just "going through the motions" as it were, with little intent to actually produce a good display. I was infuriated by some of them. They're not fit to wear the shirt judging by that performance. If he's going to choose players based on form, why the fuck are Rooney, Lampard, Johnson, Lennon, Wright-Philips and Heskey (to some extent, mainly in the fact he's a basically a central defender playing up front) getting a game? They were all dire and the booing was completely deserved. If I was getting paid £100,000 a week I think I could make the effort to beat a completely average team, like Algeria. Come on...

Unless something drastic happens, I can't even see us beating Slovenia. I hope I'm proved wrong but judging from the two games I've seen, the players seem to think it's their right to qualify for the next round. It's not going to happen unless they start playing like the "superstars" they're supposed to be. If they don't then I guess we're expecting too much, which is quite frankly, pretty plausible.

England. An overpaid, overrated bunch of wankers who get carried by their foreign teammates while playing for their clubs.

A piss poor effort, and Rooney has the nerve to whine about the supporters. They paid money to go and watch that debacle. He should have been apologising.

I remember the Soldat drama, including Dada's win against rami... There were other times though, like when BobJustBob barrett-glitched his way to victory in Contender and there was UPROAR. But DS or rami (can't remember who it was) gave him his come-uppance in the next round by being a complete dick right back to him :D

Also anyone remember the Rone Rivendale drama in the Hold the Flag tournament? Where he just quit midway through a game and was the HATE FIGURE of the GWSoldat community for quite a while.

And in the other GW Contender, where I was playing against Belross in a really tight game and he got like a point ahead, then started killing himself to avoid me getting anymore points because of the way the scoring worked! Controversial!

We did take it pretty seriously, looking back.

Soldat was the best!! I really miss the days when you could jump into the irc channel and setup a 3v3 CTF with the bot within seconds and there would always be people willing to play! The games were always fun too and we never had (many) dickhead whiners (although I used to insult people when losing - I never really meant it though... ;-) ). I wish we could bring it back :-(

#gwsoldat..... the internet glory years.....

hi im esp

things I remember most are all in the old IRC days, with all the cool dudes. I'm talkin' about Py, Mark, Faust, BLiZZ, DS & rami, Moriason, dicko, etc etc I can't be bothered to list everyone. I remember when we used to do "DALNet raids", it was pretty immature and stupid looking back but at the time I thought it was hilarious!

Also around the time that everyone played Warcraft III, and I had the laggiest computer of all time (LAGSPERBOY) and could hardly play, but you guys all put up with my horrific lag 'cause you're so nice. :-)

Another fond memory (as sad as it may be) is playing FFXI online with Krinsdeath and BLiZZ, it's a tedious shitty game really but you guys made it fun nonetheless. Same can be said with Mark and WoW.

I also have fond memories of the Ultra Quest games (AnonymousGuy and Saleop = genius rpg makers), and also the "cliton" and Y2DAZZ quotes, Soldat and how hopelessly addicted we all were to it for a while, "McDonalds-Ryan" flipping out in IRC... I could go on but the list would be rather large.

Hard to believe that it's been almost 8 years!!

So far, RDR just feels like a rehashed wild west version of GTA4. I'm trying to persevere with it (bearing in mind I thought GTA4 was incredibly boring) but so far it just feels like the same game only with marginal technical improvements and a different setting. The combat is better and I am finding the plot a little bit more interesting, but the game in general just feels like GTA4 (WITH HORSES!).

I'm going to keep playing it, who knows? Maybe I'll get into it.

Also why the fuck do you die if you go into a pond/lake/etc? Could people in the early 1900s not swim?

I am working in the offshore oil & gas industry making lots of moolah as a soon-to-be-fully-qualified Instrument Technician (not to do with music!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrumentation). I'm happy with how things are going.

I guess I was kind of lucky that my period of indecision came when I was 16/17ish and had just left school - sixth form wasn't doing it for me. I just wanted to go to my friends and smoke weed all the time. But eventually, after having my butt kicked by my parents constantly, I kinda realised "wait shit I do actually have to do something with my life."

I was always interested in what my dad did so I asked him for advice, and he recommended I apply as a trainee Inst Tech to various oil/gas companies and training organisations. Eventually I got a placement, spent 2 years 500 miles away from home up in Scotland, got drunk all the way through college BUT managed to maintain a work/life balance and passed the course without too much fuss. I've been offshore for 2 years now doing a 2 week on/2 week off rota, doing further training/drinking copious amounts of tea/smoking copious amounts of cigarettes, and imminently I'll be getting a ridiculously big pay rise and I'm going to have no idea what to spend the money on. It's an excellent problem to have.

So all in all things are peachy right now. What keeps me interested? Money for a start, then there's the time off shift; with holiday I can get 6 week blocks off at a time - means I can travel the world when I want! Also, it's the "fault finding" aspect of my job I really enjoy. When things go wrong, a meeting of the minds occurs and we all rack our brains for the answer, looking through logic sequences and troubleshooting components. It's really rewarding and interesting.
