I gave the toothpaste a shot earlier and that software previously mentioned as well. It freezes about halfway through pulling the data off the CD.. :(

My dad a few weeks ago decided to replace Vista on his laptop with XP and he backed up all of his docs/pictures on DVDs with his brothers. We were able to get all of the .7z archives off those DVDs except the most important one which had pictures of everyone in the family from the past 10 years on it. Long story short, I've been put with the task of trying to save the DVD which repeatedly gives me a CRC error whenever I try and copy the .7z or freezes the computer whenever I try to use some of those DVD repair programs. My mom was on the verge of tears when I told her the pictures might not be able to be saved and I would hate for that to be the actual conclusion to this so..

Does anyone have any recommendations as for maybe a certain professional data recovery service or software to be used? If all else fails I might just take it to the local Microcenter where they say they might be able to save it though it'll cost $200+ and I'd preferably like to avoid that cost. :\

I will for sure be at the Atlanta date. Excellent choice of venue too, the Variety Playhouse is an awesome place. If anyone else plans on being there let me know!

Also, did any of you hear the new Wolves In The Throne Room yet? I only heard the new 12" and I loved it. I might buy it eventually.

Yeah, that 12" is rad. Listening to it made me think they were really going to progress nicely from Two Hunters but apparently not! Maybe I haven't given Black Cascade (the new album) enough spins yet but so far it sounds more like an attempt to shed the "hipster metal" tag they've gotten lately and return to more BM roots. It's a pity, I was really digging the sound they had going with the 12 inch and Two Hunters...

My Bloody Valentine is coming to Denver. I'm thinking of going. It's like $40, but still.

$40 is nothing to see MBV live. I'd nab that ticket immediately if they were playing anywhere around here which unfortunately is not the case. I remember the first set of reunion shows sold out quite fast and the tickets ended up selling on ebay for 2-3 times the original price.

The JAMC's gotta be more than just an influence to APTBS. Just listen to the JAMC's "In a Hole" and then APTBS's "I Know I'll See You."

I also think there is definitely room for better recommendations of "modern" bands that work within this framework than the ones so far mentioned. :x

Here's a bill of some of the better metal bands out there: http://www.scion.com/rock

And yeah, I'm going to be attending this! Tickets were free and people are reselling theirs for $75+ now on ebay. Entry's not even guaranteed since they handed 10,000 and only have room for 5,000. Good thing I live here in Atlanta and am not driving from the other side of the US like some other folks.

Man I love this alcest stuff, atmospheric/shoegaze metal influenced music is my fave. Anyone have any other similar bands?

Try Wolves in the Throne Room. They've nailed a good "atmospheric" black metal sound pretty well I think, especially on their latest album Two Hunters. I will warn you that unlike Alcest's last album there are traditional black metal vox on this. They are are not too high and in-your-face in the mix though like other bands. The band's work as a whole sounds quite polished and refined too, none of that shitty kvlt lo-fi black metal production work to be heard.

Yeah, Amesoeurs is a side-project of Neige's apart from Alcest but I'd say they are quite dissimilar. Besides the first 2 EPs I wouldn't even call Alcest metal, and if its the sound of Souvenirs that you dig most I would recommend staying far away from Amesoeurs! It's a lot more TRADITIONAL black metal than Alcest's fusion of shoegaze and black metal-styled percussion.

Reporter: Don't you think it gets worse bombing them?
Keren Levy: No I think that is the only solution, I think they should just clear off all the city, just take it off the ground.
Keren Levy: Yes I'm a little bit fascist.

Gaza "war" tourism? Christ. Someone want to translate the rest of the video? I think I threw up a little after watching.

Looks like quite a few folks are giving her hell now after finding her Facebook though!

Saint Dymphna is definitely one of the best of '08. I would love to see Vacuum live, the song's like a neurotic cousin of MBV's I Only Said. I hear they stretch it for up to 15 minutes at their shows.

Not sure to what extent this counts as a "protest song," but it is enjoyable song nonetheless and most of the band's work is similarly political in nature.

Person Pitch is awesome. I'd venture to say that it's just as good (or maybe even better..) than Strawberry Jam. I heard Panda Bear's next album is supposed to be out sometime early next year though I doubt he'd release it too close to MPP.

who is Animal Collective?

one of the most interesting and entertaining bands from this whole "freak folk" thing (a tag that honestly doesn't do them much justice). they're one of the few bands amongst their indie rock peers I think who have a very distinct sound that almost no others compare to even across a disparate range of styles. some of the higher quality stuff audio-wise from youtube that gives you a good idea of their sound:

some buds and I are considering going to the protest in downtown later this month. Don't really have anything to add that hasn't been said before but goddamn this case is ridiculous. I really couldn't be more ashamed of the terrible excuse we have for justice in my state.

Pictures taken by a Russian soldier in South Ossetia

Definitely not for the faint of heart. You probably won't see a side of war this ugly in any American media, though once you see some of the pictures you'll realize why.
