I think one of the main differences between mainstream music today and older music is that the older stuff has more natural melodic and chordal tendencies. This makes it sound more composed and thus more respectable... but not always better.

Most mainstream music fights these natural tendencies in an attempt to sound more fresh.

----edit----

Also, the other main difference is musicianship... both in style and quality.

This is the topic to list and also talk about your favorite video game soundtracks.

My favorite soundtrack is easily FF6's... it was very consistent and there were very few bad tracks. Another good one is Wild ARMs 3's soundtrack, which had quite a few amazing tracks (especially Long Days of Rest). Other soundtracks i like include the FFs (up to FFX), Chrono Cross, and Star Ocean 2 (mainly just Rena's theme).

OK, there's one I've been looking for for a while now:
It was a Genesis game that played similar to zelda game (attacking with a sword, etc.). It starts out with you in a cave or something being chased by a giant boulder, and then I think at the end you have to jump down a waterfall, which leads you into a small town where someone takes care of you for a bit. Then you leave town to go to some sort of underground dungeon.

That's all I can remember, other than the fact that I am POSITIVE that the main character had yellow hair. Any ideas?

Edit: Also, I think I remember the view being from the side in the cave, while it was isometric in the town.
