I'm looking for a card game - of the Magic the Gathering sort, rather than the freecell sort..  It was fairly futuristic, and you had to defend several bases around the world through several "tabletops" so to speak.

On that subject, anyone know of good computer card games of that sort?  spectromancer is pretty good but somewhat limited right now.

chess

seriously though, heroes of might and magic are great, and the total war series kinda count and are ok if you've got the patience of a saint (required for pretty much every tbs really).

Anyone know of any freeware games similar to HoMaM?

The winner.  I got a whole number of obvious ones too, including all the rpg makers.  I must confess I scoured various game development dictionaries and added nearly all game engine, programming language, game library, physics engine and really any tool one could use.  I don't know any programming so I didn't add any more than things like switch and event etc.  Then reknowned game developers - bit-blot, derek yu and a good portion of the names of any game-dev-related people in wikipedia.

IOW I'm a big loser with waay too much time on my hands.

hmm...how's about:

I like food but I don't like drinks
I like cheese but I don't like crackers
I like boobs but I don't like breasts
I like little things but I don't like big things

Assuming you're into the same kinds of things as me, what are your preferences?

@Jester: there is a walkthrough in the readme if you get stuck.  And no, you don't have to kill the nautilus prime (as it's called) - in fact it's an optional boss, but totally worth it.  Hey, if you do beat it without the energy form (i.e. by throwing rocks at it...) it would be quite an achievement.

Also the mainsite is back up and has been for a while.

Kinda off-topic: I also reccomend checking out TIGSource (the indie gaming source, which is run by the artist of aquaria and has a lot of links/reviews of cool indie games as well as a large community.

Take my word that it will be the best $30 you'll ever spend.  It also won the grand prize at the IGF this year, and well deserved it.  And oh my word it is so BEAUTIFUL!  I could play it for hours on end...

Recognizing numbers in four-tenths or two-tenths of a second =/= intelligence

Interesting point: what exactly constitutes "intelligence"?  DISCUSS

Lunia - a somewhat korean mmo I've just got into through mmosite (which is worth a look through if you're looking btw).  It has gorgeous cel shading and an action fighting system, plus you can have your own private rooms for each stage.  On that note, the main action happens in "stages", just like in any beat-em-up stage with cut-scenes and bosses and stuff.  The cutscenes are a little whimsical and as I said the graphics and art are beautiful - it looks like rendered 2d but opening the items menu zooms in on your character so you can see what changes your equipment does.  The translation is poor but forgivable and the play is a little jumpy but otherwise a fantastic and unique action mmorpg.
