is the 3300 much better than the 3200 ($50 better?)

EDIT: it's only the 790gx that has the integrated graphics, and that's near twice the price

looks like it's between the Asustek M3A78-EM 780G, the Asustek M3A78-EMH HDMI AMD 780G mATX and the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G. i think all 3 are micro atx which kinda sucks i guess, but i've only got one PCI cardi want anyway.

will a microatx still fit in an atx case?

Hybrid crossfire. Yes 3300 is better. :D

Go for 790GX with SB750 South Bridge if you ever plan to overclock your CPU.

Foxconn: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186150 (I've had good experiences with Foxconn so far.)

If you don't want to overclock, your board is great.

I don't know shit about computers.

Are you not happy with how your computer is performing? A new CPU (depending on the game) will increase your FPS anywhere from 1 - 20 on average. If you're using this for editing and file converting, you'll absolutely notice the difference. Also, your PC might start up a bit faster.

Normally I'd suggest you try to find the name-brand equivalent to that motherboard and flash it, but after you said "How do I upgrade my computer GHz?" I'm afraid to tell you what flash means... And no, it does not involve clothing. :)

Edit: Nevermind. You have an OEM windows install. I'm not sure if flashing the board to a different BIOS to something that's really the same board but with a different name will screw with your windows install.

Forget what I say.
It is of no importance.
I merely speak words...

But, if you want to,
You may ask me how I feel.
Only if you want...

And, don't touch grandma.
She has cardiac arrests,
And is very fat.

Take your time eating.
Do not choke on your pudding.
You'll certainly die.

Do not take a dump.
Fun is prohibited and
chickens scare easy.

Ooooh, even numbers.
I do not know how to count.
Yes, oddly enough. (< SUCKS)

Welcome.

*main topic*

The only reason anyone would want to downgrade/upgrade to vista is for Dx10, or if you´re an ATi fanboy and you only want vista because your 3000 series sucks in XP. NOONE upgrades to vista for MS Office or... security (MS LOL). Also, I´ve heard that 64bit hardware has notoriously bad support, so I´d stick to 32 bit since you really don´t get anything so great from 64. (not that I know of, at least) In my opinion, it´s just another thing to slow your computer down and ruin your experience.

Not true. Windows XP install leaves your old user account data in the "documents and settings" directory, including your desktop files.

The only time anything is allowed to stay in XP is when you choose ¨Safe System Restore¨, I believe. ¨Destructive System Restore¨ has always completely wiped my harddrive and reinstalled MOST of the vital parts of XP, but... I had an OEM version.

Your pc can never die as a whole.

Unless you have a really cheap PSU that decides to go. XD
Wait... some things might not short. :X

I think people are just sick of others getting on their high horse when they shouldn't be and imposing linux on people. A lot of manufacturers don't have linux drivers for their hardware and most people expect you to use windows anyway. By using linux you would sacrifice the ability to play games meant for windows, so suggesting linux on a site called GAMING WORLD is a pretty bad idea imo.

Depends. If you use WINE, you can play a majority of the things that windows can. Keyword is ´majority´ here, lol.
I actually use WINE to do rm2k3 stuff, and once you´ve spent several hours figuring out how to get ubuntu studios to work, and spent a few hours feeling dumb after figuring out how easy it is, you´ll find that you´ve got a very capable computer for making music, editing videos/images, and even(BUDGET) gaming.(I have a separate computer for gaming, though. ATI fanboy :3...)

But yeah, I´ll have to agree with a bunch of things you guys said. If you´ve got windows and don´t intend to spend a few hours figuring out individual things, then keep it. Meh, late post >.>

Edit: Oh I love posting and later realizing how old the dates are...

Maybe a lot of people are online in your area with the same ISP. I've heard cable internet can be affected by the amount of users, and my internet has always been sluggish on friday/saturday nights.

Edit: Yesterday I was averaging 1500kb/s download speeds on my linux comp. That was with crappy old firefox.

Woot! I burned it correctly this time, and the install went smoothly. Thanks guys! We're up and running, but first boot was a bit slow. No biggy :D

Thanks again!

Edit(#1,000,000)

/sigh. I finished installing, but it boots soooooo sloooooooow... I turned on the comp literally 10 minutes ago, and it's still on a black screen. I don't want to turn it off and start the long boot all over again...

Edit again:

OK, it just won't boot. I watched a few videos on how this distro and version should boot. My comp will do the 'Ubuntu' screen with the load bar, but when the load bar fills the screen just goes black rather than showing a login. I DID set things correctly. Would non compatible hardware get in the way? I DO have a RADEON 9250 PCI card in this tower. I've heard ATi doesn't do well in linux.

Last edit:

Thanks guys. You´ve been a great help. This post was made on a comp with linux. :3
Only problem is it seems to hate apostrophes... And I absolutely hate firefox. In my experience, itś just junk.

(Power is working again)

I've tried that. I've set it to my main cd-drive, put the disk in (It's burned, set to be 'bootable'), and when i turn on the comp it immediately goes to freeDOS. I'd have already wiped the drive if I could get around that part. I feel stupid now for not telling you guys since it probably would've made things a bit easier.

Is there any command that you can use to reformat from freeDOS?

Edit: (No advanced bios features)

And... In case it helps...

Emachines t2890 Celeron

The installer doesn't even open. Windows doesn't open. I'm trying to install from 'emergency' command prompt. I just tried my sister's old harddrive but it's dead.

Edit: I have to give up. I switched back to my old hard drive and it still won't power up. I think my sister's hard drive shorted something in the tower... *fumes*

I've tried booting from CD's. I tried installing linux but for some reason it won't delete XP. XP is corrupted so I can't use things like FDISK and DBAN... I think I'll have to drop all my birthday plans and ask for a harddrive. The only extra one I got is an old 10gig IDE laptop drive, and I think it's dead.

Are there any 'more' specific instructions on how to install linux on the internet? I just keep finding websites that say 'follow the on-screen directions', but those directions are a series of jumbled letters with a Yes/No choice.

Recently, my computer's Windows XP OS setup became corrupt, and I just have a repair disk. Today I downloaded both the text-based and the GUI-based install files of Ubuntu Linux thinking that the new OS would just delete XP and get on with things. Didn't even read the disks. I'm having the good old "NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt" message on startup. I don't want XP on my old computer, I just want linux. Does anyone know how to remove Windows XP without using Safemode? Even that won't open, and I don't have the money for a new HDD(Or windows) so that's not an option. The HDD itself is fine other than being stuck with a corrupt OS. Help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh.

My mom's friend told her that there was a comp for sale for 200 bucks and it sounded great. I looked it up and here it is:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=999980900050000&type=product&id=pcmprd80800050000

I'd get it myself but I don't have any money at the moment. Just posted this to help out anyone who's looking for a comp.
Sorry if this is the wrong spot (and sorry for sounding like a bot)
