Realigning My Thoughts On Jasper Johns

"[ super ][/ super]
The video was created utilizing default software tools to manipulate an entire episode of the Simpsons (season 10, episode 19, "Mom and Pop Art", to be exact).
After ripping all the frames, I used software to turn the ripped images into vectors. Then I processed the files through Illustrator using the default Alignment & Distribution tools (23 different combinations). With the audio, I used a similar process, making a spectrogram image of the audio from each cut in the episode. Then I applied a variety of processes to the image to mimic the alignment/distribution used. Then took the resulting image and turned it back into audio. The result, as you will see is a frenetic mess of sight and sound."

COOL AS HECK GAMEBOY VID

its me at 0.19 also between this and the mario paint one i really like the sound of halfassed console sequenced music, strange spacious tone structures leading to nothing and looping indefinitely. 2.37 is excellent as well so far?? what 3d games could have been
this is prob my fav thing i've seen today!!!

when rummaging through drawers of stuff in one of the university labs, came across a gameboy camera not even been used!! I was super tempted to take it but i'd feel bad as i'm hoping some professor is keeping it a secret only to give it to their grandchild/great grandchild as a primitive artifact from ANCIENT PAST to confuse the hell out of them. this probably won't happen and it'll just be in that drawer forever tho

This is v cool. I'll concur the shake hands part is a stroke of genius, it's my fav scene.  The soundtrack really plays on creating an entirely different mood to the video than if the speaking was heard, it really distorts the feeling of it; it's an interesting concept!! Also was the movie posters in rooms intentional or just how the rooms are decorated normally?? I kind of like them as background props for some reason.  Keep it up, vids rule!!

"a gamer guy physically shaking, weeping with rage as he thinks about feminism. this is the 21st century. here is your tron bike"

someone pointed me towards this image for how stupid it is, some guy trying to show articles on how men just as equally suffer sexism in gaming. i don't know what his point is but it's pretty lol anyway

Nothing is as heartwarming as seeing the broken spirit of a scumbag wage or deposit thief reluctantly pay what they owe after making their life miserable for a month
you are a real trooper.

That's really cool esiann and Jamie, it's super nice!! I can imagine it's really helping folk, there's a really nice feeling when there's people there to actually show some support or do something just of their own free will and I'm sure everyone who benefits from it are really appreciative.

It'd be cool to set up something for or through the uni but I'm in final year with a dissertation and a heap load of stuff to get done which is kind of stalling me on doing that right now... Kind of bummed out we never tried to do anything before now.  But there's a few of us after university who are moving to Glasgow I think and that might be a cool place to carry on trying something like this maybe???

The kids were from different kind of families, it was a small town so there were some well off and some probably doing just ok. But we did go to the special needs class too and they seemed to really enjoy it. One kid was super awesome at drawing dinosaurs there!! But yeah I agree, doing something like this in an area where there's a good deal of poverty/underprivileged would probably be really a worthwhile cause. One thing we did to make sure the kids actually came to the workshop on the days was we gave to the classes PERSONALISED GOLD TICKETS that invited them to the thing. It looked pretty neat and we were thinking if I was a kid and got a gold ticket inviting myself to something that I helped make I'd be pumped.

bad experiences...

Aww heck I'm sorry to hear it's been a pretty bad experience for you bud!! It's a shame that there's so much laws and regulations that prohibit so many trivial things and just make it a burden to actually help people. We were lucky and had little problems with getting access to go to the kids classrooms to get them to draw for an hour. The teachers were really kind and helpful! Same goes for the workshops on the site, everyone involved were really supportive of the idea.

One thing that's kind of funny is that as we didn't have anywhere to stay for the week and a bit when we were there, we were sleeping upstairs in a tiny office room of the shop that was damp and freezing due to the building being vacant for over 2 years hahaha. Totally worth it though!

Hey gang does anybody here do any charity/volunteering stuff?? It's been something I've been interested in for yonks but feel bad as I've done not a great deal of it, and don't do enough now which I'm hoping to change after university if I can!!

Last Summer a small group of us did an art thing/exhibiton for a local arts festival which is pretty small which caters to the general public not just highbrow arty folk.

We basically decided early on we wanted kids to be greatly involved in it as they're much more creatively minded and exciting than adults.
It involved us going to a school to the youngest year groups and got them to draw loads of pics!! We had a bucket of questions that they had to select from likeIF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO WHAT WOULD YOUR POWERS BE?? and they had to draw what they thought. There were a ton of amazing drawings including one which wasa ship/car/house that could fly and was pretty much the size of a warehouse. Sadly I don't have the photos of these drawings as I'm an idiot who forgets to photo stuff. but maybe someone else in the group has some as the drawings in themselves probably warrant a topic of it's own.

After we got the drawings we were given permission to make use of an unused town center shop to do whatever the heck we wanted with it. We thought the best thing we could do was turn the kids drawings into real life things so we made a load of cardboard buildings/stuff and on the festival days let people come inside to look about. It took a day or two to clean out the place as it was in a big mess!! We also had workshops where kids could make drawings or sculptures and add it into the gallery so it continually expanded. It was loads of fun!! Great seeing kids being really shy and nervous when first given a bit of paper and pens but after like 10 minutes they were incredibly talkative and super excited. One kid stayed for 2 hours drawing pictures and making spacerockets!
Every picture the kids made at the school was hung in an area like a gallery space. They were really pumped to see their work up like that!!

here's the shop unit just after we cleaned it up.

and after with box houses and trees. not pictured is SPACE ROOM which was a massive rocket with loads planets and rockets made by the kids. one of the planets had googly eyes pasted on and was called george i think.

The tower was based on a drawing in which the superhero (who was the kid) is shooting laser eyes at a bad guy and killing him. he saved the day.

this one was pretty special. It was the first house you saw when you walked in to the shop. On the Sunday the girl who's drawing was the basis for this one came in and was really super excited!! Her mother was nearly in tears she was so proud and happy that it was made. That was really touching. They stayed for ages, and after the festival finished they took the house home with them they liked it so much!

It was all pretty crudely done but I think that really helped in the playful aspect of the whole thing. I know that the kids wouldn't have been as excited if we made HYPER REALIST houses and stuff based on their work, they really liked the vibrant colours.

I'd love to do more stuff like this, pop-up galleries/workshops would be a cool thing to carry on, it lets unused buildings get a new lease of life for a while and gets a clean up so it looks nicer for possible buyers, it's pretty environmentally and economically friendly as it's mostly just cardboard/papers and whatever that can get recycled and the kids and the adults seemed to really really enjoy it.

So anyways, anyone else done any cool volunteering stuff or even experience working with kids???

Also discuss how cool kids drawings are thread.

I forgot to mention that when he first got his collar on he literally just fell to the floor and didn't move an inch and just looked super depressed about the whole ordeal. it was ridiculously adorable and kind of sad. He's perfectly happy now about it!!

Here's the cat when it was a delightful kitten and not a terrible creature that burdens my life.

She's called Loki for some reason???

this is Jock he's my parent's new puppy.

cool pig toy.

Pretty bummed out I'll rarely see him living so far away as he's a delightful wee beast!! His fav things are hugs and belly rubs.

There's a cat in the flat I'm in at the moment but it's a dick and doesn't deserve to grace this thread of cool animals.

Heyyy it's neato to see people doing paintings here!! swordofkings there's a lot to like about the work keep it up!! You've got a nice gestural mark making which is cool and a solid understanding of using colour. Is that pre-made canvas's you're using??? If so I really recommend learning to make your own, the canvas on the shop bought ones are often pretty lifeless while using a canvas material you choose brings a lot of variety in 'tooth' (surface texture) which maybe something that'd work well with the style you use. maybe!!

Oils are a very good medium, they're really forgiving in comparison to acrylics; areas can be removed, transparencies and washes are easier to apply because of the drying times... Which can be a curse as it can get muddy if you get impatient.  There's ways around this to speed up/extend drying times and create nice effects with different materials such as adding extra linseed oil to get a nice sheen. Acrylics are great for building textural stuff but their application can either be liked or frowned upon due to the plasticity of the material itself. Also super cheap and easy which is nice!

Also you might be interested in checking out some outsider artists (maybe this is more fitting for the cool dump topic in general???) as there's a great deal who work in the bizarre and out of the ordinary subject matter and really out there compositions!!  Adolf Wolfli is a fav of mine. Also check out Ferdinand Cheval (Not a painter) too because he's super awesome. Outsider artists are usually p. great!!

But yeah super cool seeing this stuff keep it up!! If there's anything you wanna chat about in regards to painting or artists give a holler!!

@Evangel  Not entirely sure what brush cleaner you're using but I imagine you shouldn't mix it with water, as the oil paints aren't water soluble. Just fill that jar up with turps and give it a good rub on the mesh/hole thing, strain the excess turps off the brush into the jar and wipe the bristles with a rag. Rags are a definite if working with oils! They're good for cleaning brushes and also great for dabbing with a bit of turps and wiping an area of a painting to remove the pigment or create some transparency.

Ahh heck I'm pretty into excercise!! It's pretty rare to go out for a run/gym whatever and finish up feeling glum  or regretting doing it.

I decided to start getting fitter a year and a bit back, joined the gym and did weights/cardio stuff which was fun. The great thing about cardio is the improvements you make become clear pretty quickly which is awfully encouraging. The past months have made it hard to really have a structured routine for excercise (working in the studio from 8am-10pm is a bummer!!) but I walk 40 minutes each way to get there and back to the flat. I guess I'm making excuses at the moment as there's time at lunch and before 8am, so I'll probably just motivate myself to get up earlier...

What really was helpful in pushing myself in excercise though was joining the university boxing club. Apart from it being a pretty intense work out in itself twice a week, it gives something to aim for, getting stronger and seeing the improvements what you can put into practise. Sparring's not a particularly painful experience but it without a doubt tests your endurance and mental stamina in short bursts!!

Also the folk there are pretty neat which isn't what I was expecting for that kind of club! I reccomend folk should give something like that a shot if they want to try and have the opportunity, it's a pretty rewarding experience!!

barrelroll over rocks while avoiding hundreds of pyramids to eventually turn into a rocket to blast the pyramid on the horizon to save the world. Very good end screen. if you fail, prepare yourself for spooky skull laughing at your incompetence....
