The issue is that Win XP, possibly other OSes, are set to enable write caching by default. Try googling "disable write caching" and set it to not use it, and you'll never have to worry about doing it again.

This is for games, of course. :P
The computer in question is Win XP SP3 Home Edition Dell Dimension XPS Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz 1 GB RAM w/ Radeon 9800 Pro video card. And lol I don't know what half of what I just typed means, but suffice it to say it's an old (~6 years) computer that was fairly top-of-the-line when I got it.
The games I noticed the problem on were Tropico 3 (invisible people/buildings) and Street Fighter IV (invisible menu, maybe everything else).
On an interesting sidenote, I can play Modern Warfare I on lowest settings, but I can't get Worms World Party to run for some reason. :P

My laptop died, so I am back to my semi-ancient desktop, which has an older graphics card that only has pixel shaders 2.0, not 3.0. Is there any way I can somehow emulate this with software, or am I doomed to upgrade/buy new hardware?
Thanks in advance.

if you want to win you absolutely must not pick vega

Vega is my main, and I have over 2000 points in ranked battles. :)
It's all about learning how to poke, guard against crossups, and confuse the opponent. He has excellent reach, as well.
Plus he's wickedly insane. Always a plus.

I got Plants Vs Zombies the other day, and it is pretty fun so far, and my wife seems to enjoy it.

However, is it just me, or does it have a massive memory leak problem? It seems to slowdown after only a few levels, and I have to free up other memory via the task manager or quit the game, as it gets nearly unplayable.
Note I have the Steam version.

Is Spore any good? It looks pretty epic in scope, but I haven't really talked to anyone who's played it. Plus it seems like something my wife might enjoy.

everyone leave mkk alone, she's going to grow out of most of this shit.  and sure she's going to say she's not, but that's because nobody believes anyone when they say "you'll grow out of it".  that's just part of growing up.  stop arguing with a kiddo, leave that shit alone.

And it's totally cool if she doesn't grow out of a lot of it. Everyone's their own person. Variety is the spice of life, and all that.

I was reminded of your endeavors by that post (I am assuming you only learned the language to do your missionary work?!?) and given the nature of this topic I figure now was a good a time as any.

Yes, I learned the language during my mission. I don't get much practice lately (not a lot of Filipinos or people who know Tagalog in Idaho), but I still know enough to get around okay if I needed to. I'd like to go back someday in the future to visit, if time and resources allow.

Obviously, Hockey is not prevalent here in Philippines, so I have no interest on it.

Pare, sobrang makulay ang avatar mo. Kumain ka ng halo-halo, at mag-chillout nang konte :)

Metroid Prime Trilogy...just beat 1 and 2, starting on the 3rd. It seems pretty immersive so far with the whole motion controls thing, even though it's pretty much a gimmick. But the gimmick is working so far. :P
I liked MP1 more than MP2, though... The environment seemed cooler/more realistic and varied, and the difficulty is a lot more constant than MP2. And the backtracking didn't feel nearly as bad!

That's what I thought,   but I'm not certain what the jelly could be.
Anyone here like agar or konnyaku?

If by agar, you mean the jello kind, then yeah. They call it gulaman in the Philippines.

And fish balls FTW, if you have the right sauce to go with them. Kwek-kwek is good too http://www.pinoyrecipe.net/kwek-kwek-recipe-tukneneng/

Alec I am not talking about bubble tea okay. This is not the same thing. It is a drink that comes in a bottle and it's like the whole thing is all jelly-like rather than the chunks/pearls. I think it said on the side that the inside bits were made of like coconut or something. Bubble tea is also really expensive whereas this was not.

Might be something like nata de coco

I don't know of any grocery stores like this where I'm from but I work with a bunch of filippenos who tell me about all the wierd shit they eat and then laugh at me when I act like an american about it.

Like yesterday for instance they told me they eat goat brains, cow brains, cow skin, cow balls, balut and a bunch of other wierd shit. And today one of em sent me an email about chinese people who eat baby fetuses. Yesterday one of the galley dudes told me about how one time he was working with a chef that was making cow dick stew (I think it was stew or soup) and the cow dick was really hard and they boiled it to get it to soften up but it wouldn't soften up so they cut it up into little pieces and put it back in the stew and when he started stirring the soup up again he fished out a cow vagina and then said, "OH, THAT MUST BE WHY THE DICK WAS SO HARD".

I don't really believe that and I think they were fucking with me but the guy kept a straight face the whole time he was telling me the story.

If you have the stuff to make it, tell them to make you a proper halo-halo. It's the best dessert ever! :)
