didn't do much last night besides look at writing a git hook to do javascript compression pre-commit.  Got it working and actually put Treat Fighter: Triple Treat up on a new heroku app.

You can view it here:  http://saltw-jam1.herokuapp.com/

I'm going to update this as I work on the project, so be sure to check it out!  There's only the title screen and movement so far.

Now I gotta make some enemies and some trick or treators.

Is there a way for you to preset like some padding? I wouldn't really know. Unity is way over my head.
that's what i tried to do with the code snippet i pasted a few pages back. still unsure why that didn't work, it should be dividing fine.

It's been awhile since I've messed with Unity.  I never liked UnityGUI and I actually at some point started using NGUI: http://www.tasharen.com/?page_id=140 (you can get the source somewhere and get around the watermark I'm pretty sure, as long as you don't use it commercially).

Have you tried GUI.BeginGroup(Rect(whatever location and size you want)).  This will make any following controls be positioned relative to the rectangle you specify in BeginGroup.  So if you gave it a box at (100, 90) and then place a button at (0, 0), it would set it to (100, 90).

There are also some nifty methods in the GUILayout helper that might be helpful.  Here is an overview on UnityGUI layout stuff: http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Components/gui-Layout.html

Here is where I am at now.  Initially I was a bit concerned about the graphical requirements of a beat'em up but now I am feeling a bit better.  I had fun tonight just laying out the basic pieces of a usable tileset.  I'll add more detail to it later.  I'm thinking the grass might be too bright of a green.  Kind of looks like Simpsons...

here is the title (image only).  It took awhile since I went through several revisions and basically realized I am not yet the drawing type, so I went the simple clean route instead.

I've decided I want to try and make a beat'em up style game.

i'm thinking I need to watch some spooky movies for research and inspiration.  I'm thinking of silent horror films or just plain dorky ones from the 40s-60s era.  Any good recommendations?

I am MaD/ren/@zach_no_beard, long time member/lurker of gamingw and saltw
I am going it alone
I will probably go straight HTML5 with either an engine from scratch or impactJS(http://impactjs.com/).  If not that then probably something with love2d/moonscript (one of my favorite programming stacks)

I am off to a good start with names: http://apps.baltimoresun.com/Preakness/index.html?q=5&a=Captalism&m=10
perhaps the spooky adventures of capitalism thug

you can just use a css rule.  Add something like this to the html in your blogger template:

a.class_for_your_link {
  cursor: none;
}

I don't think this is very good user experience though.  If you're applying this to menu tabs then users are going to have a hard time telling how far they need to move the mouse to get from one tab to the next.

as far as dealing with people spamming to keep a certain entry on your site upvoted and popular, you can deter that with a bayesian filter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_spam_filtering

spam shouldn't be on the top of your list really i just wanted to plug that in because we started using that at work and it's been really effective.

I've recently seen this jquery plugin called ascensor (http://kirkas.ch/ascensor/#/Implementation) that applies this neat elevator design to a webpage.  I think this would be a neat implementation for what your trying to do, where basically each developer gets their own "floor" that they can customize and use to market their game.  of course this opens up other issues as it may be tricky to scale this kind of solution when you start getting hundreds of developers that want to use your site.

you could also design your site to be kind of like tumblr where the main page is just a feed of whatever is getting reblogged the most with the ability to search things.  you could call it indr.  that name is tight.

Weightlifting and getting a good deal of protein in your diet is the way to go.  I used to be the same way although not nearly as severe.  I was 5'11" and 160lbs and built up to about 190lbs which isn't drastic but enough to get my friends to stop calling me skinny.

So with 3x5 meaning 3 sets 5 repetitions, the routine for me included switching off between squats 3x5, military press (overhead press) 3x5, chin-ups 3xF (meaning you keep going in each set until you fail a rep).

Then the next workout day (with one or two days rest in between) 3x5 squat, 3x5 bench press and 5x1 deadlift.  It's important to note for each of the lifts I would commonly do a lot of warm-up reps before hand which I believe was the key for me building volume.

Doing squats for example, I would do like 5 reps 135lbs to start, 5 reps 175lbs, 3 sets (a triple) for 205lbs, then 3x5 225lbs.  You have to be cautious with this route since it can generate a good amount of muscle fatigue and that can cause an injury.

so I bought my rock climbing gear yesterday from a local climbing gym that is between my house and my work.  I've climbed twice so far and I have to say I really like rock climbing.  I think over time it will balance out real well with me commuting to work on my bike.

I think after some time on the high walls I will try out bouldering.  btw rock climbing shoes hurrrrrt when you aren't used to them.

Many years ago I was very very skinny, so I started lifting in college a bit. It was alright. You just do research online, plan out a weekly routine and stick to it. The problem is it isn't that exciting. Eventually I found something called indoor bouldering. It's a form on rock climbing you can do by yourself and inside. (Just google for a local gym) I replaced all exercise with that. It's quite strenuous. And the best part is it's actually fun. Fast forward like 3 years and I'm still doing it. It's not going to make you super muscular but it definitely tones a lot of your body (core, forearms, back, biceps). Instead of just throwing more weight on a bar, your skills increase and you can work on harder "problems" or climbing routes. It's not just about pure strength, technique plays a significant role. Anyway if something like that is available to you then I definitely suggest checking it out. It can have a pretty high barrier to entry for some people, but once you get past that it's a blast. Downsides include it's generally more expensive than a regular gym, and you probably want to get your own shoes (you can rent though), which cost around 50 dollars.
this sounds real cool actually.  I've done on and off weightlifting over the past 3 years and I always drop it because it gets boring.  I wanted to pick up rock-climbing but I want to look this up and give it a shot.

a friend of mine got me a copy of dota 2.  Does anyone else play this?  Personally, I've never been a big fan of RTS games, but I figure it's free so why not give it a shot.
