I hope not. I hope he somehow flukes and turns it into something good. After reading it and how the story is segmented and told through different narratives maybe that and the whole thing BEING WRITTEN ALREADY IN GREAT DETAIL will make it harder for them to butcher it?

I just started reading this book and its incredible.

Edit: Ugh this guy is horrible. How in the fuck? Like the only stuff he's done that isn't shit might be star trek and I haven't seen the second one which he produced himself so it might end up being garbage?

He's a writer and his favorite work and only work I even see him talking about is steven king that might explain why his shit sucks so much.

World War Z

I just started it tonight and I'm at the palastinian narrative of the book. So far I love this damn book. The human element and the detail and specifics of the story as a kind of personal report, it makes it so much more involving and frightening. IE: the rate of the disease being spread increasing through black market organ transplants and smuggled refugees. The raid on its initial outbreak in a small town in tibet. The "patient zero" being a bitten twelve year old boy and the mystery around what exactly bit him and the doctor's frightening and gruesome introduction to the whole thing. His associate forwarning him by telling him their kind of code phrase for something horrible is about to happen, "everything is going to be alright".

man I love this book

Also the parts about the conflict between palastinians and israel and israel being pushed back towards the mediteranean sea, china being the number one supplier of black market organs via political prisoners, canadian anti terror units. I'm kind of wondering how much of this pre-war stuff actually has some relevancy to our current geopolitical status? This book is so damn good.

Edit: I just got to the part with the suburban mom talking about her kids acting up because of hearing about zombies so they got them on prozac and ritalin. "I can't believe she just sold all of her stuff and suddenly moved her family to some cabin in alaska. I thought she was smarter than that, one of those non-ignorant mexicans."

AAAAAAAAAAHHHH FUCK! THIS BOOK!!

There are hundreds if not thousands of mullet swimming all around this ship. They are literally surrounding this ship and I can't fish them. Fuck I hate these fish...

Also theres a ground loose on one of those bigass steel beamed light fixtures in the shipping yard and it keeps sparking off every ten to fifteen minutes like a small bomb going off right next to the gangway where I'm standing watch.

Its our mexican shipping yard so the dock workers took good care of it....They put a goddamn barrier to stop people from accidently driving over the huge ass puddle of water surrounding it but absoultely nothing to stop someone from walking right into it.

I guess thats part of my job now

I hate weddings. Unless they're more of a celebration and not two people just kind of publically masturbating about their union like the whole world has a personal stake in your relationship. Its really vain to me and imo devalues the whole thing.

The second to last wedding I went to was like that. They were 18 and one was my cousin and the groom's best man started bawling like a fucking baby while giving his speech and it was so awful. My other cousin is a year older than me and his was pretty cool. They had an open bar and that side of the family is way less dramatic and corny.

the pic where you're asking what asbestos looks like, looks like asbestos.

But old decaying sheetrock can look like asbestos too but I'm pretty sure thats asbestos. If the building is pre-1970s with no remodling its prolly got asbestos in it.

We still have it on some parts of my ship, it was built in the 70s I think. When I first started I was grinding some rusted steel down and I kept hitting it with the grinder which turns it into dust that you can inhale and then my bosun came by and told me that it was asbestos and to make sure I didn't hit it with the grinder so I stopped doing that.

asbestos is a greyish/white kind of condensed rocky/powdery substance with hairs coming off of it. If you've seen it before you can definitely tell when its been used in construction.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos

I've been through LAX a couple times and they've been doing construction since forever and I've seen it around there I guess they're in the process of removing it.

I remember we talked about that awhile ago and between that and 2001 space oddysey there was some site that a guy ran and he did essays like that and some video presentations with tidbits from the movies as examples. It was pretty awesome. I love stuff like that.

The video also brings up that the robots are faster and more efficient than human workers.

in some instances they are ie: assembly line work but generally its much much cheaper to hire a starving poor person. It really depends on the type of work they're being used for. Like the example he used of "picking tomaters" its a mindless job of repetition in an area where right now it would be pretty hard to put a robot. You gotta think about the pursuit of the technology, manufacturing it, and maintaining it all of those go into the cost analysis.

Quote
Its pretty much what I would want from this world. Everyone gets a set amount of money that they can survive healthily on, and any extra work in more intellectual pursuits would get them extra money if they so desire. Since the robots are doing all the mundane shit.

imo this wouldn't work well. It curbs personal ambition. Definitely state funded things like health care, transportation, and education but just giving people money to do with as they see fit causes problems.

the show I was talking about was east bound and down btw

you might not like it because its pretty much everything you hate about ignorant ass people put into one incredibly hilarious character. Thats if you find that kind of shit funny. I imagine it would leave alot of people on here grinding their teeth.

you should checkout the three burials of melquiades estrada if you haven't seen it yet. Its really really good. I posted about that movie and it got completely ignored. Thats a great movie. The dude who wrote the screenplay also did 21 grams and babel. I haven't seen 21 grams yet but it looks good but imo babel wasn't all that memoriable.

what the fuck do you do with that monolith thing anyways?

I dunno bout the tripping part I don't think I've ever gotten there. for me ME2 just took that stuff to another level. If I remember correctly I actually liked it more and the planet exploration actually made more sense because you're not just roving around world after world in like 20 minutes you only hit parts with a certain level of importance.

Warped655, watch Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Charlie Chaplin's classic film, Modern Times. They were made in the 20's and 30's respectively but still manage to spell out a great deal of what's wrong with an automated work force.

With machines running everything, there's no employment, the poorer will get poorer, while the rich will get richer now they don't have to pay wages, and will simply widen the gap between the two. The gap needs to be removed before we can begin to think about making those kinda drastic changes imo.

yeah and I'm just gonna have to AHEM COUGH *VONNEGUT* again

Playing through mass effects(s) and I'm on the first one.

I love the depth they put into the whole background of the game. Historical advances in science, specifics on newly observed planets, alien cultures, theology, and history. I've not been able to find a game that extensive and creative with that sort of stuff except for the elder scroll series. Game takes me twice as long because I read through everything. Its really interesting.

Like I was reading about asarism and the turian form of governance. Its so cool. Very thorough and thought out. I want more stuff like this.

also I think its been said but we have to discern what kind of labor is "menial" and what isn't. Bathroom attendants, janatorial service, welders, crane operators, assembly line workers. Because this shit isn't black and white and I understand the marxist point of view that humans are naturally above that shit. But every forest needs some fuckin fungi, every lake a bottom feeder. Some people are above that, some people are content with it.

I think we need to be more aware of peoples own personal contemptment or enjoyment for their positions in life, on a personal level. Because as a capitalist society, automating what you personally see as unfit puts alot of those people at an even worse disadvantage then they already are.

wait

about mental stimulation

how the fuck are we more accustomed to mental stimulation nowadays? Cus from what I understand the most accessible media out there drives us towards mental degradation more than stimulation. For one to actually achieve what you're talking about they'd have to be actively seeking it. And the average person just doesn't do that.

the constant torrant of inane subliminal commercialism and philosophical control. that shit wasn't nearly as prominent back in the day. It was def not as easy to obtain mental stimulation but at the same time you weren't being goaded into becoming a fucking vegetable from birth and as a product of which, brainwashed into not giving a shit or thinking that stuff as some kind of mental heresy.

I started buying different intellectually creative films and shows and shit. I had the first season of deadwood and breaking bad and a few other things at the house. They couldn't afford to pay for the cable when I was gone so my brothers got into it being the only stuff left in the house and have been sharing it with all their friends since. I'm going to keep progressively buying more films and stuff like that at a progressive rate of intellectualism and see if I can't trick them into a higher education. Eventually..........there will be documentaries...
