This is an annoying awards season. I hope the WGA gives a waiver to the Oscars like they did the BFCA.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Julie Christie, Javier Bardem and Amy Ryan are all going to win at the Oscars because those four have won all those other small awards. You never can tell, though.

DDL is good but he already has one and I'd like to see someone like Ryan Gosling win or something.
Julie Christie's performance was inferior to Cotillard's.
Bardem deserves his.
Amy Ryan should lose to Cate Blanchett in "I'm Not There" (but probably won't).

Coens will win Director. And No Country would probably win Best Picture. If not that, then Atonement.

This is nominated for a bunch of awards all over the place, especially Javier Bardem. I want to see it just for Javier Bardem...

We were actually just having this discussion in Lit last night, about game scripts and screenplays. I actually do have some ideas but I'll organize them first and edit this.

Also, Psyburn would love this thread.

SUBURBIA

Trevor lives with his dog in a quiet neighbourhood. Isolated and lonely, he often takes long walks and passes a school playground and notices a little girl there named Sabrina, who always has bruises on her face and arms. He follows her home one day and learns that she is being prostituted by her father and he rescues her, after a gunfight, and takes her into his home. He is afraid to turn her into the police because of the murder he committed and keeps her in his home but begins to get pedophilic tendencies towards her.

Daphne lives with her husband, Dale. Dale is a good father and husband but occasionally throws violent tantrums against them, which he subsequently feels immense remorse for. He undergoes several pressures at work, is not social with his co-workers and is constantly berated by his aggressive boss. He also admits he does not feel any love for his wife but is with her for the sake of their son, Jonathan.

Neil is a clerk who works at a grocery store and dreams of a more profound life. He spends most of his time talking about this with his friends but still ends up getting drunk and going home alone.

Stevie is a dogcatcher who finds happiness in his mundane life through his fiance, Angel.

In this story, as paths cross on a Saturday morning, when Dale is playing with his son, he tosses a ball out into the road by mistake. His son rushes to get it, unknowing that Neil, still drunk from the night before, is speeding ahead. He knocks the child over and instantly kills him, and then speeds off. Dale and Daphne see Neil's face but fail to get the license plate number.

Dale falls into a deep depression after this and just a month after, he jumps off the ledge of his work building and lands on the sidewalk on top of Angel, Stevie's fiance - leaving Daphne without a husband and a child, and Stevie without his fiance. Daphne and Stevie eventually cross paths and after a long while, they manage to get together in their sorrows. They eventually adopt a girl named Sabrina, left to authorities by an "unidentified person" (Trevor).

One day, Trevor's dog is caught by Stevie and when Trevor goes to reclaim it, he notices that Sabrina is with him. He then realises he wants her back. Later on, Daphne walks into a store to buy some things and recognizes Neil. She and Stevie talk about how Neil caused the beginning of the whole mess and they later confront Neil about the hit-and-run. He constantly denies it and they begin to get aggressive with him, so he hires a man to threaten them (not do anything to them) so they would be afraid and stop bothering him.

However, one day, Daphne and Stevie find Sabrina missing and they suspect Neil to be the culprit because of the threat, when it's really Trevor who has her. And trouble ensues as conflicts get blown out of hand.

Trevor, Neil, Stevie and Daphne all live at different ends of town, each of them unsatisfied in their lives and each has their own personal saviour to tide them over. However, in a peculiar crossing of events, which includes strange instances of a hit-and-run, a homicide, a suicide that resulted in the death of another, and child prositution, these saviours are demolished and they are left with guilt, isolation and anger. In their attempts to rebuild their lives, they cross paths once more and this time, with only guilt, isolation and anger in their souls, conflict and chaos ensues.

We all have those, right? You see it on DVD or on cable and you absolutely love it and regret that you did not see it on that big silver screen. This could go also for those older movies that would've been cool as heck if you were alive back then to see it in the cinema. Maybe for the cinematography, maybe for the lush score, maybe for the special effects or visuals, or maybe it was just TOO DAMN COOL for the small screen. So what's your top 5 movies (or any five or you can't think of a top 5) that you wished you saw on the big screen?

Me?

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. The Crying Game
4. The Shining
5. A Clockwork Orange

Just saw Enchanted and well, though I wasn't psyched to see it, it was entertaining. Amy Adams was very good, I thought. Patrick Dempsey is just a wooden marionette. But the ending sucked.

One thing that bothered me though;

Yeah, Daniel-Day Lewis.

He's like the most consistently good actor I know, man.

So I just saw Shoot 'Em Up in the cinema. I don't think I would have been half as entertained if I watched it at home!

I've never understood shelling out $9 (seriously) to see a comedy in theaters. You're going for the jokes, not special effects or whatever. Like, I saw Wedding Crashers in theaters, and it was hilarious, but it's equally hilarious at home. No one needs an enormous plasma screen or surround sound to enjoy straight-up comedy movies like that (and as an added bonus, a lot of comedies include deleted scenes and the like in DVD releases, meaning you really get more bang for your buck if you just wait.)

I think for the "human experience" or whatever. Like I remember seeing "American Wedding" (which is basically a piece of shit comedy) in the cinema and found it 3 times as funny there because everyone else was enjoying it. I don't think I would've liked it at all if I saw it on cable first.

Also what about drama? Alot of those don't have special effects either and I like seeing them on the big screen. I loved Babel and Brokeback Mountain (lol =( ) on the big screen.

Ah, jeez. Fight Club and Requiem for a Dream, definitely.

I remember the first time I saw Fight Club, I was thinking how grand this would be if I were watching this in the theatre with 100 more people who would like it just as much.

Just for the hell of it, a couple of movies I am really glad I saw in the cinema recently:

- Lord of the Rings trilogy
- Crash
- United 93
- The Departed
- Apocalypto
- The Bourne Ultimatum
- Superbad

So I go to the cinema quite a bit - I'd say about once per week because every Thursday afternoon there's no classes at my university, even if it's to see something shitty (but not something embarrassing like Bratz or something). I really like going to the cinema because I like watching the movie with an audience and hearing the reactions and such. The downside is that sometimes there's a rowdy group that just annoy the crap out of you.

But that doesn't usually stop me from going to the cinema to see movies (recent examples) like The Departed, The Illusionist, 300, Zodiac and Hot Fuzz. I even went to see the 'smaller' films like Babel and Little Miss Sunshine in the theatre. I own alot of DVD's and I find that when I watch them home, I don't get the same effect. And there's lots of movies I wish I could have seen in the cinema - including old ones.

But I know people who prefer the comfort of their own homes to watch movies. Surround sound systems, lounging on their couch with a bowl of popcorn, etc. I'm all for that too but I often feel like it'll be much better in the theatre.

So where do you prefer watch your movies?

And what movies do you wish you saw at the cinema?

Some of mine are:

- Saving Private Ryan
- Pulp Fiction
- American Beauty
- The Green Mile
- Being John Malkovich
- Magnolia
- Traffic
- Silence of the Lambs
- A Clockwork Orange
- The Shining
- Fargo

Ugh I have so much more but I'll stop there.

Saw this for my birthday with some friends and I think just about everyone enjoyed it. Alot of the theatre was laughing, especially during the "dicks" part and the police officer scenes. I found Seth a bit annoying, though, and yeah, I agree he cursed a bit too much. I don't know anyone IRL who curses THAT much actually.

Anyhow, moving aside from that - my favourite characters would have to be Seth Rogen and Bill Hades as Officers Slater and Michaels. They were huge assholes but their chemistry was awesome, especially with the dude who played McLovin (couldn't remember his real name). Speaking of McLovin, I think he did a pretty good job also (also for some reason, he reminded me of Psyburn).

So, yeah, it's pretty much difficult to find a vulgar comedy that is hilarious nowadays. I'd say this is definitely a movie that knows its crowd.
