I'm so pimped up for this game. It looks like it's going to be everything I hoped it to be, and even more! I'm not even bothered by the graphics, I think they look fine and people need to shut up about such trivial things.

Prog can be experimental and experimental can be prog, there is no definite rule for it. Symphonic prog rock WAS experimental when it first came out, not so much anymore. Why are we arguing about this again?

Generally musicians don't know politics any better than your standard Joe. It's a problem because their fans will obviously think they "know better" and maybe even adopt their views without understanding any of it themselves. It's dangerous to have people with way too much influence compared to their knowledge in any field.

No, I don't think it's a good thing to think that bands have a responsibility to be political. Personally, I don't mind politics in songs because I generally pay a little attention to the lyrics.

It means that most prog rock bands sound better than most non-prog rock bands. I don't think I need to emphasize it, but IMO anyway.

If we're comparing genres to books, I'd say prog is no specific type of book. The first chapter might be fantasy, but suddenly it turns into a gut-wrenching detective story. But what's this, just as the villain was about to get caught... we're in the middle of an encyclopedia! After a few words have been explained, it goes on and takes the form of an autobiography.

My point being - I love prog because you never know what's gonna happen in the songs. It's full of surprises, twists and (this is the keyword) NOT BORING AND REPETITIVE. Now, I totally agree that prog is pretentious, bloated and at times meandering. That's just a part of the genre just as primitive, raw and simple can be used to describe punk (I'm not saying all punk fits those 3 words just as not all prog is pretentious - but most is). I like pretentious, over-ambitious, cheesy and artistic music, but that's just me.

Now excuse me while I visit the punk topic and loudly declare my distaste for that specific genre. (im not really going to)

Saying whahay at everything and everyone. Oh wait I'm still living 5 years in the past...

I'd say many members of GW have the talent of being really obnoxious and likeable at the same time. I'm not sure how much of a GWism that is instead of just being the result of this environment, but it's definitely noticeable.

Haha, no need to feel bad. I don't know that much about classic prog you see. I do have some albums by the bands you wrote about in this thread, but other than that, my knowledge of them is very limited. I guess I'm more of a new-prog/progmetal kind of guy? Erave is back in business and taking over the management of CG4 for at least a few months. Yours truly has been really busy with real life stuff like an internship.

HOWEVER, Erave is doing some stuff in some far away place this week so hold your horses - he'll probably start within a few weeks. Consider this time as the CG4 summer vacation.

Very nice article! It feels like it's missing a few bands, but maybe you'll write about them later? (Jetrho Tull, King Crimson, Rush & Pink Floyd mostly)

I'm a big fan of symphonic prog and prog rock in general too. Are you going to write about any modern bands of the genre like The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard or Magenta? If not, I might give it shot. Anyway, well written.

Jethro Tull, Genesis and Yes are my most listened to artists from the 70's. Then there are Pink Floyd, ELP and other prog rock bands that I listen to occasionally.

Besides Metallica/Iron Maiden/Slayer/metal there are not that many bands from the 80's for me. A notable exception is KANSAS which I absolutely adore. Leftoverture is one of the best albums ever. Incidentally, Mariollion's Misplaced Childhood (also from the 80's) is another long-time favourite of mine.
