uh no i'd probably just be like "it's called salt world it's a site with cool people" and i probably wouldn't expect them to really ask about the name because websites have weird fuckin names.  like, i've never questions why giant bomb is called that, or something awful.  HISTORY is a dumb reason to encourage a name, because our history is as an rpgmaker site full of teens.  look i'm not the #1 fan of the name saltw but arguing in favor of gamingw on the grounds of not liking saltw is way dumber than the name saltw is.
yeah but giant bomb and something awful are decent names for sites. SA even moreso because it actually makes sense with what the site is about.

and i'm not really arguing in favor of the old gw name. i was just making a point that i think saltw is every bit as bad as the old name was.

there were some legitimately good alternative suggestions made during the initial name change. the only reason saltw won was because it was the only "joke option" out of the bunch, and so of course that's what people will vote for because everyone is a comedian. also the name change happened at arguably the community's lowest point and i think some people probably even picked it out of spite specifically because it was such a bad name.

no matter what you think of saltw gamingw is pretty much the worst thing we could go back to because it's a) implying that we're a gamer community and b) horribly unoriginal (google gaming world and look at how many sites come up).  like try to think about the name GAMING WORLD through the eyes of someone who has never heard of it and think about how 13-years-old it sounds.
i guess 'gamingw' specifically doesn't bother me as much as saltw because at least it has a history to it. saltw may sound less like a site created by a 13 year old, but it's still completely stupid. the original saltworld joke by gz was funny for about 5 seconds. to stretch that to this extent is nuts. also it was an inside joke and makes absolutely no sense out of context.

idk, i just think that saltw sounds really fucking dumb. like the main argument against 'gamingw' was that people said they were embarrassed to say they were a part of a site with the world 'gaming' in its name (which i totally understand), but then the solution was to pick a name just as awkward? like would anyone ever say "hey man check out this cool site it's called salt world"? because then you're forced to explain yourself "no you see saltw was an old in-joke, the name is ironic" "uh, okay".

saltworld is terrible and so is bald world. can't the site just have a normal name again? at this point i'd rather it go back to gamingw.

to those of you who are being hosted by me: my entire server is going to be replaced, but I'll try my best to keep downtime to a minimum. the old server is kinda a mess, but in case anything goes missing, don't worry, I've got backups of everything and the old server will be around for a while in case files need to be retrieved from it.

what's your schedule for making backups? is it like once a month or week or something? do you keep multiple versions of backups or just whatever is most recent? and one last question: what is your most up-to-date backup?

Is there nobody else in your age group at your AA meetings that you can hang with? I know someone who went through narcotics anonymous and they met a shitload of new friends through there. Be more proactive. I bet there's at least one other person (if not more) that're in the exact same boat as you and are looking for a new non-drinking friend to hang with. Try asking someone.

trigger warnings are fine for things that may actually trigger PTSD. it's kinda dumb when you see people use it for anything that may remotely cause a negative feeling. seeing shit like "[trigger ][/trigger] i like hamburgers lol" spits in the face of rape victims and PTSD sufferers a lot more than dietcoke's post does.

i think my main issue with it though was that the factory itself was just really grimy and dirty. you'd think food is prepared in some clean and sterile environment, but this factory looked like it was the kind of shit you'd see on tv about appalling work conditions in china. like i saw one of the plastic barrels the pickles were fermented in had black oil stains on it.

can you tell us the most fucked up thing about it
it wasn't necessarily anything fUcKeD uP or gross about it, but seeing the process of how they're made really turned me off on ever eating them again. seeing the cucumbers get dunked into these large, dirty plastic barrels. and then they're just left out in the sun and it has this awful sour smell and the brine looks like sewage. the entire factory also smelled like vomit. it was awful and really unappetizing.

The fact that there is potentially an awful person out there who will misinterpret something does not, to me, invalidate the reality of the work's aims and intention
yeah i understand this, but once the situation crosses a line from just 'someone misinterpreting something' into 'someone potentially coming into harm and/or someone using it to contribute to a culture of oppression', then that kind of changes things.

but yeah, on a purely philosophical level i totally get what you're saying. still though, i guess i'm just not a young idealist anymore. like i personally don't have any problems compromising a small bit of my artistic integrity if i feel that it is for a greater good. maybe this is a shitty thing to say, but we live in a shitty world and my stupid art having the freedom to say whatever it wants is a luxury that isn't all that important when there are far more real horrors out there.

i won't draw any lines in the sand for anyone else though. i'm only speaking for myself. i have no idea what all comedians or what society in general should do. maybe handle certain situations with the respect and sensitivity it requires and not be like carlin and apply some laissez-faire free market logic to fucking joke's of all things. idk.

the problem even with the borat joke and rape jokes in general is that they don't exist in a vacuum. they exist in the context where rape is still a very real thing and in a society where rape victims continue to fight a horrible uphill battle the entire rest of their lives simply for being victims.  maybe borat or some other comedian can make a clever observation about it, but for every 5 people in the audience that're smart enough to get it, there are 50 other buffoons who think their horrible views are being validated and they go on to perpetuate rape culture (or racism or homophobia or w/e the taboo joke is). it seems to me like comedians are quick to defend themselves and hold up their freedom to make jokes as a sacrilege, but all the while completely ignoring any kind of unintended blowback that's a direct consequence of their actions. like i understand why comedians should be free, but the issue isn't as simple as they make it out to be.

your post was still disingenuous since it was absolutely not at all a debate between a bunch of white guys about why slurs are ok, but rather one person's dumb opinion and the 10+ pages of people telling him why he's wrong.

his post was still disingenuous and dumb and described the topic as something worse than it actually was. i mean the topic IS stupid, but coming in here with your cool one-liner flippant observation isn't going to make it any better.

nope that's actually legitimately what this topic comes down to right now
as far as i could tell it was just one person arguing for slurs being funny and everyone jumped down his throat? geodude's post made it seem like there was an actual debate here when it was far more one-sided than that.

buncha straight white guys tryin to explain how slurs can be funny sometimes, N I C E
hey that's ok sometimes i don't read topics before i post in them either

pretty broad generalization, i think.
yeah um that's not what i meant. maybe i worded it wrong but i was talking specifically about the subject of making jokes about taboo/dark subjects like rape or the holocaust or whatever. anytime i've seen jokes about these specific subjects they've always been lazy and dumb and rely mostly on the shock value. but maybe i'm just not looking at the right comedians idk. dada said it better than i did though so i won't bother repeating his post.

i understand the logic in comedians having freedom and pushing boundaries - and for some dark humor can even be a coping mechanism through some kind of trauma - but more often than not these jokes are always lazy and unfunny and said mostly for dumb shock value. like take that carlin bit for example. completely ignoring the subject matter, there was nothing about it that made me think 'ok this could be kinda funny i guess'. he seemed to think that there was something inherently funny in being silly about a serious issue and that was basically the extent of the whole bit. like there was nothing clever about it at all. any dumb hack could've made the same joke and often those are exactly the kinds of shitty jokes you hear from people who've watched too much family guy or tosh.0.
