Wow this place is still going! I remember joining gamingw.net back in like 2003 I think? Cannot believe that was nearly 15 years ago.

I tried accessing my old account, but no joy. If anyone remembers me, I used to have a Felix the cat avatar for so long. Pretty sure my username at one point was also just 'Dave'. I was developing websites from a young age, I was involved in open source software early on. Also contributed to gamingw.net's actual website too if I remember rightly.

Coming here sure brings back memories. :) I remember there being some real talented people in this community.
Were you the guy who ran replicantnet.co.uk or whatever it was called?

I've been looking for an old DOS-based Zelda-like game development toolkit called "Ace RPG Maker" or "Ace RPG" for the longest time. It was somewhat similar to the OHRRPGCE toolkit (which you may also want to check out) in style but was probably discontinued at some point. Let me know if you ever find it.

Hi,

I just wanted to tell you girls and guys that we've launched a Kickstarter for our cross-platform 2D platformer, Buck & Miles.

We've spent a lot of time studying the design constructs of classic games and used that information to make a new platformer.

Here's the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/taqutor/buck-and-miles-a-cross-platform-2d-platformer

A lot of old GWers were involved in the making of this, including Medieve, Nessiah, Konix, Chef, Dudesoft and mkkmypet.

We'd also love to see you on http://astrojone.com where we've got a forum and chat.

xoxo

<jamie_1> we formed this gaming clan to fight agaist gaming injustice
<jamie_1> against gaming hypocrisy
<jamie_1> we thought we could play games online at 3am eating doritos with respect
<jamie_1> but you know what?
<jamie_1> some gamers just won't have it
<jamie_1> it came to our attention that there was a competing clan
<jamie_1> they love everything we hate
<jamie_1> dishonour, disrespect
<jamie_1> lies
<jamie_1> cheating
<jamie_1> hentai
<jamie_1> they love all of it
<jamie_1> they're called the bullet boys
<jamie_1> the infamous Bullet Boy Clan...
* quackgyver spits
<quackgyver> May they be crushed under Gaben's corpulence.
<jamie_1> and we have decided, as a group, to wipe them out using honourable tactics
<jamie_1> unfortunately
<jamie_1> every single gamer we've ever played is a cheater
<jamie_1> and uses hacks
<jamie_1> big head hacks, ned flanders formations - you name it
<jamie_1> it's a dark world out there
<quackgyver> They used the forbidden Raging Ned Flanders formation for crying out loud
<jamie_1> but we're going to overcome them
<jamie_1> we're going to express our gun's honour on the battlefield
<jamie_1> and dias
<jamie_1> i'm just talking here
<jamie_1> but i'm sensing you might have a bit of gun's honour
<quackgyver> I see it as well.
<quackgyver> He could be our Keanu.

Hi,

Me, Jamie and Dicko have been getting together quite frequenty for some Left 4 Dead-gaming. We had a lot of fun goofing around, so we created a group on Steam in case anyone else wants to join in.

Basically we band together for coop sessions where we do our best to uphold glorious gaming honor:

What you can expect:
 - Lots of good goofs and spoofs.
 - Left 4 Dead, Age of Empires, Half-Life, Serious Sam, Heroes of Might and Magic, System Shock 2 and whatever else you can think of.
 - We stay clear of racist/sexist/*phobic sessions and douchey players.
 - Jamie being the most selfish and awful co-op partner you'll ever meet.
 - Jamie accusing the opposite team of hacking his ping.
 - Some classic GW nostalgia.

Screenshots:

Every sesh starts with a little gaming prayer.

Note that gun_haver is Jamie. He basically went afk without a word at the start of our round, and we had to protect his character for about 15 minutes. He then returned with a "good work team" and ran towards the goal while leaving the rest of us to deal with the zombie onslaught. He got the high score and the rest of us died. This happens a lot. Like, you can expect Jamie to leave mid-session because he feels like eating a sausage or grabbing some nuggets from the Mickey D's across the street.

How to join?
If anyone wants to join us, our group can be found on both Steam and Evolve (the latter is a great service that offers virtual LAN, voice communication and automatic overlay screens in any game) where you'll be able to join us in group chat.

And remember:

"Game hard, game safely and most importantly: game on."

Pretty much anything is possible with XP or VX, but I think you'd have an easier time implementing procedural generation as well as the benefits that RPG Maker offers from scratch in a toolkit like Game Maker or Construct 2, rather than having to learn Ruby and try to work within the constraints of RPG Maker.

Since the freely distributed homebrew niche is the only market that a quality-controlled commercial console won't be able to tap into, I think that Ouya's only success factor would come from being an open indie counterpart to what the Steam Box is going to be. However, I don't think that the Ouya has much of a chance becoming a top-of-mind option for developers as long as it's running on Android, since not all mobile- and tablet developers will bother to make Android ports and since Android is rarely among the primary systems to receive application platform compatibility next to Windows and OSX.

I don't know what the rationale behind picking Android is, but I think that running on a mainstream Linux flavor would give it a much bigger chance of being able to draw from an existing pool of applications as well as giving developers a lower threshold for porting applications, since Linux has better porting tools, native application wrappers and cross-platform development libraries.

Also, I think that the design aspect is an important one, because I find that the more low-level a platform tends to be in terms of development requirements, the bigger the likelihood that the user experience is going to suffer over time as programmers start releasing unpolished system tweaks and solutions to commonly requested features, kind of like how the Open Pandora, RaspberryPi or even Linux start out as polished and rigid design experiences, but start looking worse the more you try them to get to do what you want them to do, since the only way to do it is by installing stuff that was designed by people who's primary skills aren't design-related.

However, it's a cool project so I hope I'm wrong. I'll probably get one for emulation. :)

I have to confess that I know next to nothing about video formats and working with them. If you are willing to take a look, I can provide some video files from Realms of the Haunting. If you can come up with a way of converting them to a more common video format and back again, I can handle scaling the video in between. Which admittedly would probably be the least troublesome step in this process. Also, I would be most grateful.

I'm also a huge ROTH fan. :)

Did you manage to get anything done on this?
