This game ticks a lot of boxes I look for that no website will allow you to search games by (I plan to rectify this asap):
- Overtly Christian iconography upon death (literal angels emerging from corpses, crosses signifying death)
- Enormous, apocalyptically oppressive inhuman, dangerous setting (hell, prison planet)
- The protagonist is a weird-looking goofball and also their one motivation is explicitly to FUCK!

The setpiece where you sail over to a little subroom is startlingly effective in my opinion - the screen shakes, you take treasures and a demon is summoned. It's a fucked up looking thing and it's pretty scary, especially when it turns out that it actually chases you across the map, until the player destroys it with a single arrow! But then it appears again? Is it a different demon...?

ROBOT III [angry, ][/angry,]: Look at that! It's gorgeous! Nobody will do it for you now. I swear it's like at some point gaming stopped being about grids with little icons inside and that's when they started sucking permanently. At that point I can't understand the attraction. The grids are what I'm here for. Even early 3D games have very obvious grids everywhere. It's a different thing with 2d ones especially the grid gives you the feeling that each pixel is a unique piece of space. Nowadays everything is built like a Flash game to hide the grid. People are always going for a cartoon look but it never happens. When you have grids your game is honest. It gives you a genetic core linking you back to every other gridded game and it gives your world a nice cast of unreality, the sort you can only see in the rare mediums where visual representational space is of very low resolution - tapestry and knitting. Nobody bothers to tell stories with knitting and tapestry is long dead, subsumed into its animated digital interactive descendant.

This is a video I watched sometimes when I was little. It's a parody of Dragostea din Tei, you know, the Numa numa song, about PC repair, coopting characters from a dark, surreal Blender cgi film, Elephants Dream, that I was obsessed with and probably posted in here, with some interstitial fwd:fwd:fwd:re:-style benevolence. Lode Runner 2 has one of my favorite looks for any game, with the super dense detailed isometric abstract virtual new age rube goldberg playgrounds. It's too bad the gameplay behind Lode Runner is such complete shit or I might actually want to play it. It's actually a little unfair how fucking cool it looks in comparison to how lame and funless it really is. I guess that sentiment becomes more common as you learn of games.

The enemies are little hooded cultists who have nothing better to do than monkey bar back and forth across virtual playgrounds. I think a few of these guys ended up taking bit parts in some catamites games like [Murder ][/Murder].

Lode Runner is just Pac-Man for snails. You can instantly see where you need to go and the challenge of getting there is in not killing yourself out of boredom as your fragile probe trudges down the straight line to victory. If it doesn't include animations you will have a better experience just looking at the map than you will trying to interact with it, which can be true for a lot of games I guess. Suspecting more proportionally was interesting about stuff from this era due to technical limitations, and that nowadays tools are too powerful for our dumbass brains to lock ourselves down to anything good. Nowadays the iinteresting creative limitations are in the brains of the developers. Making the "success rate" of whether a game will contain an interesting bit of weirdness shoot down to the pathetic trickle it is now. Versus hell virtually every NES and early arcade game have the samely inhuman grimth to them.
 
I wrote that last night when I was actually upset at Lode Runner but now I can think more maturely and I think that it's just lovely that it exists at all.
