I'm incorporating rapping into my repertoire of emotionally overbearing synthpop music.

Lemme know what you think of it. Here are the lyrics for reference:

i'm taking a break
from making mistakes
the look on my face
is always so fake
i'm know i'm a snake
i don't need to make
any concessions to the impression that the mess i'm in
isn't what i meant to get cos i wanted in
i know i've done a bad thing, i know i'm a prick
believe it was the last thing, i make myself sick
i flash a smile every once in a while hiding the bile
that i'm living in
i'm giving in this isn't worth the shit that i'm swimming in

i must be dense, i'm on the fence
i don't know what i'm up against
the precedent is set again for residence in my own mess
unless i sense that change is for the best
i'm taking bets on my success
so pick a lie and take a guess

and if i make a decision it's a point of derision in my head
i get visions every night when i'm lying in my bed
and my position changes every time i feel the dread
of knowing this'll never leave, it goes everywhere i tread

it's not a voice it's a choice, at least that's what i read
it's just a noise in my mind, so forget what it said
i need an incision, some kind of revison, there's something missing
cos i think i'm conditioned to just get quiet and listen

i feel delirious, i'm taking things too serious
i'm crying then i'm furious and
wish that i was through with this
there's nothing i can do it's just -
the shit i say is unbelieveable
it makes me fucking heave it's inconceivable

it makes the air unbreathable
and saving face just isn't feasible
i'll pick some time when it's acheivable

but even though i feel like in practice i'm not intractable
i just act as though my bullshit is factual
i'm just being practical

I tend to have a lot of use for listening to people talk while I'm doing things or traveling. I don't think I want anything too niche, as in a film review podcast where my interest level will fluctuate greatly depending on what movie they are talking about (also every movie podcast i've tried has been hosted by idiots). Instead anything with a wide range of topics that get discussed, or some kind of news and current affairs podcast. Even just something with people who are interesting to listen to even IF the topic they discuss is limited to a particular subject area which I might not be seeking out. Maybe the hosts are funny or entertaining regardless, y'know?

I don't have anything great to recommend, but I've been listening to uhh yeah dude for years, and this american life. uhh yeah dude is just two guys talking shit about american culture basically - they are mostly interesting to listen to and are occasionally pretty funny. it's a catch all so they go into all kinds of different topics and generally engage with them as skeptical laymen. If you know what uhh yeah dude is then you probably get some idea of what I'm looking for.

This American Life is famous so I probably don't need to explain, but the way I use it is I go through old episodes to look for ones with topics that sound interesting to me. Anything too frivolous like I dunno, their thanksgiving turkey related episodes or whatever, and I'm not interested in just hearing the host and his reporters and guests talk about that because there's no core personality there, it's just all about the subject and whether that's interesting. They're kind of journalists so it's like that. Anything else like this I'd be interested in, as long as it's of a decent quality and by people who are pros or at least smart.

Also just some hard news podcasts would be good that are well presented and focus on interesting stories which they tell in an informative way. I was also considering looking for a podcast which is hosted in news anchor kind of format. I was looking to see if rachel maddow had a podcast - in this kind of thing, it isn't necessary the host be great but even if they have a distinguishable approach I can filter that'd be good. Like rachel maddow says she's a 'national security liberal' etc, so I know that's where she's coming from. I don't necessarily have to like the person.

Anyway, anyone know some good general or news podcasts?

i mean the fact i'm here posting instead of driving towards a specific goal is indicative of the issue. everyone is like this to an extent i guess, but I heard or read at some point that one of the differences between successful and unsuccessful intelligent people is one group has the ability to disregard unimportant information and distractions in order to focus on a more narrow range of goals. self control i suppose, and maybe some people are lucky enough to grow up just right so you have it pre-installed but it's something i'm still trying to forge in my mind for myself.

anyone been having success directing your mental energy in one place until you have acheived a result you desired? i'm not talking about lack of ideas, lack of caring - that's a different problem - i'm just talking about focus and ignoring distractions. you all know me so you know i have self control issues with most things in my life, and it's taken me going through a complete lack of it in many areas to realise that it is a general issue with me rather than a single chemical addiction thing - it's emotional and imaginative as well, i go all over the place and when something seems like a good idea i drop everything else and focus on that.

which is fine, maybe, but the problem is that is leaves me in the position of finishing little of what i start. right now i just thought oh yeah, i want to write a horror film, so i wrote up a basic treatment of an idea and that took i guess half an hour so now what do i do? start breaking it out into scenes and acts and then start writing a draft and all of this. you don't do all that in one night of course, but i would like to be able to train my mind into focusing on something important to me like this for a good 5 or 6 hours so i can get something substanial done for myself.

i'm supposed to be heading up two societies at university this year and i am running into the same problems. it's part of why i took the responsibilities on, so i would be forced through other people relying on me to consistently exert mental energy towards something over a period of time. hopefully i can look back on it and be proud of myself rather than think well it WOULD be been brilliant if only i hadn't spent all that time watching clips of ravens and crows talking on youtube, or deciding no drop everything, i'm a musician today! no, i want to make an animated show tomorrow!

any tips from grown ups? commisteration is all good but let's put something towards licking this son of a hound.

Hiya. There aren't very many good comedies on tv at any given time. Nathan For You is about a guy, Nathan Fielder, who goes around to various businesses in the US and offers to do promotional campaigns for them. The idea is that the character he plays in the show, which as far as I can tell isn't entirely scripted and involves a lot of legitimate interactions, knows very little about business and has no sense of propriety or common sense when it comes to devising his marketing ideas. Sometimes there are segments which focus on making fun of a particular genre of reality tv rather than the business promotion stuff, like in an episode where he realises that he is lonely and he can't talk to women so he invents a fake reality show which is exactly the same as the bachelor.

It's really funny, and Nathan seems like a really sweet and nice guy. Some people said something about the show being mean spirited because it is playing with small businesses a lot of the time but uh...okay, I guess I don't mind people who are running businesses getting embarrassed a bit here and there. None of it is vicious personally, though. In any given scene, the joke is almost always equally on Nathan's character as it is on the business owner. There are a couple of exceptions where the owner seems like an asshole, though, so they probably deserve it.

Anyway - this show is really good and I'd say it is funny far more often than it isn't. It was a cool surprise. There are 8 episodes of it, the first season just finished last week I think. I don't know if there will be any more because nobody watched it, apparently it only got like 400,000 viewers a week. I hope they do make more episodes, or that Nathan Fielder makes more comedy in the future because this is a really funny show with a pretty solid central comedy idea. Here are a few clips I think get the show across, but just go download it or something!

This clip is too short, but it gets the idea across. This idea takes up most of this episode and it is hilarious. Apparently a lot of news agencies picked up the video he uploaded and it got like 6 million views and it was all just a dumb joke:

edit: hahaha nathan actually left a yelp review for this guy: http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/wolfes-investigations-los-angeles

There are plenty more which are easy to find on youtube, I don't want to overload the topic. I pretty much like all of this show. Even when it seems like it is gonna go wrong, it is actually tricking you into worrying about that because it knows you will be, and then flips the script.

Does anyone already watch it? I hope if you don't, you enjoy this cool comedy show.

post it here. this is a topic where you can say almost nothing. post in irc, yeah, the topic title was BS, but if you want to say a little thing post it here. the general thread isn't clear enough - so, there is literally nothing too small for this thread. here's my initial example:

i was at a good party last night but i think the girlfriend of the guy who i am pals with doesn't like me and i get why and i don't really like her. it is a weird thing to not like people.

let's do it!

Hey. I figure it'll be a while before I finish enough for a new album/rar file and get a little more serious about promoting my songs, so here is one I just finished that I think turned out pretty well.

Hiya. I traded Skyrim in for this game and Silent Hill: Downpour about 2 or 3 months ago and I just completed Catherine. I haven't completed Silent Hill Downpour yet. I got three games at that time and the best of the three was the other one, Max Payne 3. Catherine is a very stupid game with a pretty fun central gameplay element. I just felt like making a post about the game Catherine and some of my thoughts on it.

The music is mostly pretty good so here is a song I like from the OST to set the tone.

http://youtu.be/FRZCwf_XI9k

Catherine is a game which obviously markets itself as lurid. There are some weird marketing choices that I think have to do with the fact it is Japanese and maybe they didn't clock on that the main character's t-shirt, which says RAVE on it, has a heart symbol for a V that kind of makes it look like a word with a very different meaning, and the use of the heart there being morbidly ironic. I don't think that is in any way what anyone intended, but you definitely wouldn't wear this shirt in public because anyone who didn't know it was from the game would assume you were wearing a t-shirt with some kind of wise-ass rape joke on it and you'd get looks at best. I'm bringing it up because in some way it explains how I feel about this game, but there is also a lot of awful bullshit in this game with the designers and writers definitely did intend.

I don't know how much of the team worked on this, but apparently it was the same team as Persona 4. That is what got me interested in this because Persona 4, while having a lot of issues that were partly due to the Japanese context, is a game I enjoyed quite a lot and spent 8 months slowly working my way through, getting attached to quite a few of the characters. People like Kanji, Chie - they were appealing characters and it was fun spending time just living alongside them in that safe, small-town environment. It was a nice place to visit.

Where-ever Catherine is set is not a nice place to visit. It is populated by idiots who think philosophizing means sitting around drinking in a pretentious bar, wearing appropriated clothing, and quoting things various old fucks said about the differences between men and women no more recently than 50 years ago. The cast of this game is repugnant, I did not feel anything for any of them and actively disliked most of them. More than that, I disliked who I imagine the writers of the game to be as people. This is a deeply sexist game in a kind of disturbing way. I mean you can see it from the outset - the virgin whore/nagging shrew dichotomy presented as some kind of meditation on the difficulties adults face in their romantic relationships. C/Katherine as well - something you see in movies by guys like David Lynch where women are all kind of interchangeable and merely represent different aspects of this idea of 'woman'. In no way is this game remotely capable of seeing women as people. It's unnerving that this was taken by anybody as a mature game, it has some of the stupidest writing I've ever seen in games and I just said at the beginning of this post that I like Max Payne 3, which is because I like Max.

If you want to, you can check out the level at which this game is operating in these two clips:

Katherine:
http://youtu.be/HpFeuzBK8Gk?t=5m46s

Catherine:
http://youtu.be/a3D4pn9t4vA?t=7m38s

Just stop whenever you feel like it, I guess.

I'm not trying to dig at this game for being a bad representation of women, exactly. I don't want to make a big long sanctimonious post about that, because I've got no authority and it's an obvious complaint I could make in a few lines. This game is just a disappointment for being so ugly and pretentious. I was hoping that the Persona 4 team's mistakes in Persona 4 were going to be progressed on from and improved - like, for example, in Persona 5 maybe we could have an openly gay character who isn't treated like they are mentally ill, or something like that.

It's because I like these kinds of oddball games with social elements to them that I give a crap. You spend a lot of this game in the pretentious bar I mentioned before, just hanging out and talking to your friends. You control Vincent as he walks around and interacts with the other people people at the bar, getting to know them. It could've been a really relaxing experience coming in and playing this for a couple of hours before bed, but I didn't want to get to know a single one of these characters when 8 times out of 10 their opening line is something about I don't know, "Did you notice how all women are serious? Men need to be more serious, I think...", or just some other manbaby gender relation nonsense.

The stereotype Katherine with a K fits into isn't just a Japanese trope, you see it in pretty much all mainstream US comedies. You know, the emotionally (and physically, usually) abusive and joyless partner, usually a little older (as youth drains from women, so does the capacity to experience joy), contrasting with the free-spirited 18 year old girl maybe in pigtails maybe a cheerleader who will of course fuck this older loser guy and not expect anything in return. I mean, it's just boring and is holding everybody back.

So if you heard that Catherine was somehow a thematically mature game underneath its lurid marketing campaign - and I don't necessarily have an issue with the porn style marketing - then, it isn't. It's a really shitty experience on the narrative level. Fuck this game, fuck the people who made it.

The puzzles are great and I like the music. Here's the title theme, it's pretty good:

http://youtu.be/RxrzWP-oWwo

What I want to see is one of these social games which are actually pleasant to inhabit and is made by thoughtful people - by good writers. It was easy to go nuts over Deadly Premonition because of how lovable and open it was, but even that had some of the exact same problems that Catherine does, especially towards the end. Maybe we need to let David Lynch go as an influence because I think he is holding us back.

I wouldn't recommend Catherine.

Okay, I have a better idea of what this can be now, and its production is imminent. I got a mic, and I'll be recording some kind of intro segment tonight. After that is where you all come in.

Each episode will have a broad theme, which will be approached in a number of different ways. If you want to record a solo segment relating to it, send it to me and I'll edit it in. If you want to take part in the group discussion relating to the theme, we'll each agree on a good time and get on skype. I'll record the conversation, edit a bit for dead air and intercut whatever additional segments there are at appropriate moments. There will be other bits and pieces, but this will be the format for this episode at the very least.

So here is the theme of episode 1: Your childhood in a glass box. Childhood is over. For some of us that has been true for a while, and for others it is something we are only just realising. What do you miss about it? Do you feel like an adult? Were there any moments that the contrast became especially clear? What do you think about getting older, and what is important to you moving forward? Tell stories about your happiest childhood memories, or about the movies and things that take you back to it. Were you a brat? How often do you feel like you are still a child? Do you wish you were?

I think you probably see what I'm getting at.

I'm posting this here now to give the people who want to contribute a chance to mull it over a little before we set up a skype convo. I am going to do a few segments/skits that do something funny with the idea, along with my intro and outro bit. I hope this theme gets some of you interested, I think it is a good one to start off with. A lot of us grew up around here, and have changed plenty. It might be good to start off from the perspective of leaving certain things behind and moving onto the new.

I want to have this skype conversation by this coming weekend at the latest. It may be difficult to get everyone who wants to be in on it at the same time, so if say 3 of us are available at one time and a different 3 at another, we can do two different conversations and they will both be included. The wider the variety of voices in these parts, the better.

The idea is to do a podcast. I like podcasts, and they are easy to make. I'll be the 'host' guy, and there will be contributions from anyone who wants to contribute and has the slightest, even the slightest, amount of communicative ability. Flap those jaws. Go ahead. Sound coming out? You might be qualified.

It'll be a variety kind of thing with a few different segments. Right now I am not putting too many restrictions on it, I'll make a first episode, decide what worked and what didn't, and consider any response it gets.

So this topic is to see who will contribute and what you can contribute. If you have a specific idea for an audio segments - comedy, or something - then go ahead and submit that to me and it might go in if it isn't boring or terrible sound quality. There's no point in just putting everything in if some of the submissions aren't any fun or interesting to listen to, so if you do want to do something like that then it'll probably need at least a little effort put into it i.e. write down what you're gonna say roughly beforehand, or do some editing work before you send it over.

Otherwise, if you are comfortable with the idea of a live skype call which I'll be a part of and help direct the conversation a bit, then we can do that. You can also do this with different participants and send it to me and it might go in. I think a good proportion of live back and forth is important in terms of making this feel alive - not just a series of monologues, although like I said with the requisite amount of effort and creativity put into it they can be great.

This is a preliminary topic. I'm going to make this, and how fast it gets done depends on the amount of submissions. If I have to end up doing 90% of the first episode, so be it. If it is good and people see a result I'm sure submissions would become more plentiful. I'm doing this for fun right now, just because I like to make things. This is also a very good idea for core community content if this place was ever to start growing again.

So say whatever you want about the idea or ask questions. Also if you can help out, post here or pm me if you'd rather. I'll update when I'm actively working on the first episode.
