What is Alcarys Complex?

Alcarys Complex is an action-RPG developed in Game Maker 8 Pro. Couch, Ocean's Dream, and I have been working on it since 2007; the game contains completely original graphics, sound, and code.

The game's story follows six characters with different perspectives and experiences as they work at making a name for themselves and interact with forces good and bad. Whether they're in it for themselves, the money (usually the money), glory, political fame, or each other, this group eventually comes together to ward off various threats. Though they often agree on the nature of the threats, they don't come to the same conclusion as to how to resolve those threats, so there's often a lot of conflict between these people.

On the writing: I'm actively working on my characterization and the realism of my dialogue.  Such advice, no matter how critical, is welcome with open arms. The complete story script was written over a six-month period last year, but still sees edits to this day.

Characters

During the game, you will encounter characters in the story. However, depending on how you play, you may not be able to befriend some of the characters. Some of them are lying, thieving bastards who use their position in power for financial gain, and others are incompetent and oblivious to any perspective but their own.

To reiterate: you may not be able to befriend some of the characters.

Corvallis Unruh (bookkeeper, age 23): Corvallis lives with his parents in the town of Prisma in the Principality of Xirdalan, and he works as a bookkeeper at Instrumental Technologies, an area medical company.

Angela Leyline (liaison to the Grand Duke of Lessis, age 29): As the only military liaison to the Grand Duke of the Duchy of Lessis, it’s Lieutenant Colonel Leyline’s job to follow the orders of the grand ruler of the mountain nation.

Attlas Douglass (nobleman, age 36): Attlas lives with his father, metal magnate and billionaire Rio Douglass, in the capital of the Republic of Vodun. The President of Vodun is his step-brother.

Leyt Duckworth (contract hunter, age 24): Leyt lives off contract work, traveling from town to town to make money doing things people need done. He doesn’t appear to have any family.

Alex Kirovabad (linguist, age 25): Like Leyt, Alex is a contractor, but, as a Linguist, she contracts her magical ability to the highest bidder. Right now, she’s making magical explosives for the Lessian insurgency.

Lomah Byron (traveler, age 22): Lomah travels the world helping his father test out prototype mountaineering equipment for his business. However, his skin condition prevents him from being fully invested in the job.

Major Features

The game's main feature is the Sociability system, where stat improvement has been decoupled from combat and tied to cutscenes and NPC conversation instead. It's still a work-in-progress, but the final game will use some variation of this system.

Conversationalists: with certain NPCs you talk to, you can choose which character in the party speaks. As a result, the conversation may twist and turn in various directions based on who you choose.

The Banter system: sometimes your characters will have a real-time conversation, shedding more light on their mannerisms and behavior. You can still do anything you would normally do in real-time, and if you go into the menu or go to another map, the conversation will halt until you come back to the field screen.

The Assault Pack: since your inventory is locked outside of town or a save point, your characters' Assault Packs provide expandable and upgradeable storage space to be used in battle and while exploring.

Exploration: early on, the game's extremely linear, and this demo is representative of that. In the full game, you'll have the opportunity to explore the vast western lands under the survey flag of a nation. I've planned a lot of good areas for this and I have a lot of ideas I want to execute to this end.

Other Information

Download (60.6 MB)

There's an in-game tutorial system, but if you have any questions, please consult the instruction manual included with the game. If you've found bugs, or you're having trouble getting the game to work, you can e-mail the help address at the end of the manual, post here, use the help form on our website, or PM me. If you can't get the game to work, I'll get on that immediately - I know how it is when you want to play something but you can't make it work. :/

Also, I'd put up a trailer/gameplay video, but my computer's terrible, so any kind of footage I capture has loads of dropped frames and I can't get the a/v to sync properly. I've done it before, but I can't remember what configuration I used to get a smooth picture. If you can help me with this, please PM me.

Please let us know what you think!

Sonic Team, the remedial class they are, has been in the laboratory for almost exactly a year "reinventing Sonic."  Here's what they came up with.

Video (QT)

Alright, look.  Yeah, he's a fucking werewolf for some reason.  Yeah, the story doesn't seem altogether great.  When I watched this video, though, it was the closest I've come to shitting my pants in a long time.  It looks good, not great.  They could polish a lot of the stuff up, especially Sonic's running animations.  I'm more interested in the execution of this concept.  I'd felt they should go "3D on a 2D plane" for a while now, and this could be the first REALLY GOOD Sonic game in a long time if they do this right.

Don't fuck this up, SEGA.

Edit:  Not fake.  Here.  Have more screenshots.

I also have it on middling authority (e.g. some guy who claims to be in touch with a SEGA rep on the Penny-Arcade forums, so take that with a grain or two or salt) that this is an all-or-nothing project for SEGA.  Whether this means they give up entirely if it is bad remains to be seen, and would probably be a no-lose situation regardless *snort* *chortle*

In other words, the entire fucking company, not just Sonic Team, is working on this game and giving it as much time and money as it needs.

Quote from: SEGA ON German SEGA magazine
First, we apologize for our fault to post those fake news about the Sonic plot and the confirmation that it would be 2D, gameplay-wise. However, we go on with our own new facts: SEGA is launching SONIC UNLEASHED with a HUGE production budget and it seems not only SONIC TEAM is involved but a very huge part of SEGA’s developer teams including those from Japan, the US and, apparently for the first time, even Europe. There seems to be one clear mission: Rebuild the Sonic brand and prove it could work in 3D environments.

[1223 ][/1223] Hey, SEGA filed a copyright claim in an attempt to make all the media about this game disappear.  To reiterate, it's an actual leak, not HOHO WE SAID THE INFO WAS COMPROMISED BUT ITS REALLY NOT.  This is NDA-breaking shit.  They apparently weren't allowed to let anyone know this game existed until May.  The dudes responsible for this are as good as fired, probably.

Update:  A few changes have been made!  Spreadshirt decided to drop $1.50 off the cost of the shirts for some reason so they now cost less.

  • Voting has been reset after the close of the last contest.  You can re-vote for what you think should be the next design.
  • Create a Barkley: Gaiden T-Shirt as part of this contest!
  • Orson Welles T-Shirt not too far away!  Read more on page 3!

For all your attention thanks.

---

In the time the Shop has existed (since August 2007), it has sold 13 t-shirts and has brought in US $28.90 for Gaming World.
If you are with SNK, $4.09 has been made from from the shirts bearing your copyrighted design.  Please PM me for an official sales statement.

Hello.  I am pleased to bring you, after what amounts to probably months of waiting, the Whahay T-Shirt Shop!  The shop was brought back initially after a failure to deliver the initial batch, to give prizes in the Catch Captain Goodluck contest.  The people who won the shirts acted as testers of the shirt quality as well as to guarantee that each shirt got out.

T-Shirts are $17.99 $16.99 each, and ringers are $20.99 $19.99 each plus shipping and handling.  All major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and DISCOVER), as well as check and money order are accepted.

Charity info:  All profit from shirt sales goes directly to Bart's Paypal account every quarter.  I touch none of this money.  The profits presumably go to making GW a better place for everyone.

Here's how it breaks down:

Retail Cost of One (1) Normal T-Shirt:        $16.99

Production Cost of One (1) Normal T-Shirt:  - $14.40

Here are some (positive and negative) testimonials.

On New Designs:  Certainly, the designs I suggested up in the poll are not the only ones possible, just ones that come to mind right now.  I certainly will take other designs (for instance, if someone from PerfectRun or other guys want to put up a shirt based on one of their games, etc) and will work with the design submitter on getting these proofed and ready to press.

Here's the thing, though.  Spreadshirt has absurdly stringent vector design criteria.  I have not yet submitted a design that has passed their vector criteria, even though it seems like 9 times out of 10 I make a design that seems to fit the design criteria and they reject it anyway.  Here is the most frequent rejection I get:

Quote
Hello Johnathan W,

Thank you for submitting a new design to your Spreadshop. Unfortunately the image "" (design ID: ########) that you have uploaded cannot be used. The reason we could not approve your design is:

Some elements in your design do not meet our size requirements. Please make sure that:
•   All components of your design are at least 0.059 inches (1.5 mm).
•   The space between elements should be no less than 0.04 inches (1 mm).
•   The entire design cannot exceed 11.7 x 11.7 inches (297.18 mm). We actually recommend a size of 8.86 x 8.86 inches (225 mm) so that your design can be successfully printed on most of our products.
Please refer to the link below for more information:
http://www.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Service/FAQs-1328/categoryId/46/articleId/35

So, here's what I'll do.  We can propose designs in this topic, and get them proofed.  The first person to crack the "vector code" and give me a vector design they will accept will get a sample shirt of their design, AND another T-Shirt of their choosing, both shipping paid.  Please submit your design in either .ai (Adobe Illustrator Format) or .eps (encapsulated postscript format).  Anyone that submits a design that goes on a shirt, regardless of whether or not it is accepted as a vector, automatically gets a sample T-Shirt for testing purposes and as a reward for submitting the design.  I want you to know before you consider this that you will get no monetary return for your designs.  I don't see any profit from this operation at all!  This is something that you can do to help out GW and maybe get a little recognition for your art in the process.  This is the chance for Graphic Art people to step up to the plate and get a design out there!

Anyway, a little musing on my part.  The rationale behind not just buying a whole bunch of white shirts and writing ARE YOU RESISTINS ME on them is (a) these would have to be done in batches.  The first time I attempted this, I was given a link to a place that had some absurdly low prices for base T-Shirts.  It looked too good to be true, and it was, because I would have had to do a batch of some pretty high number (I don't remember if it was like 20 or 30, but it was a significant amount.)  I don't want to do that.  I want people to be able to go in and order a shirt whenever they want without the fear of not being able to find someone else to partner up with because everyone has the shirt they wanted.  The other reason is that (b) Spreadshirt actually uses pretty nice material and methods and I really appreciate their support (when I'm not grappling with them over design issues.)  They don't do a shop commission, and I'm able to set the commissions to go the the GW Paypal account and upload new designs and offer new products with ease.  In the end, I want shirts that people can actually wear proudly in public, and this is my reasoning!

That's all I got.  Questions and feedback always welcome!

This is a fucking shame.  Bhutto was really ace in helping clean up some of the corruption in Pakistan.  Ugh, dude.  I can't really say anything else right now.  Just...ugh.

So, let's narrow you fuckers down.  Who ISN'T going to get Super Mario Galaxy?  If you are one of these people, studies indicate that you might be, in fact, dead.

Release:

US - Nov. 12, 2007
EU - Nov. 15, 2007
AU - Nov. 29, 2007

The ultimate Nintendo hero is taking the ultimate step ... out into space. Join Mario as he ushers in a new era of video games' date=' defying gravity across all the planets in the galaxy. He'll also have a wealth of new moves that are all based around tilting, pointing and shaking the Wii Remote. Shake, tilt and point! So, uh, I figured I'd post this here.  My Gamecube wireless controller's analog stick came loose while I was playing Smash.  I can move it around and such, but moving doesn't do anything unless I press really hard.  Is there anyone who has dealt with a similar issue, or anyone who knows how to fix it without going into the controller itself (not because I'd void my warranty, but because I don't have one of those little triangle-tipped screwdrivers)?

Any help would be most appreciated.

I just thought I'd let you all know.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/index.html

Sadly, there's no release date that I saw.  Well, there's a pretty amazing list of composers contributing to this project though, including Yoko Shimomura (Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts, and Legend of Mana) and Tomoko Sasaki (NiGHTS, Ristar), composers that will hopefully give a clue to the nature of the character roster.  Supposedly there will be daily updates, though.

If anything, the interface looks a lot cleaner.

This was kind of a let down.  Hopefully they'll actually say something about when the damn thing is coming out.
