hopefully this is pretty self explanatory. if you've heard a lot about a tv show or movie or something, then post it here to garner the opinions of your fellow geedoublites (this is an awful word and i am very sorry for using it!)

i'm gonna rock this boat with it's always sunny in philadelphia. i've heard a LOT about this show, but is it worth watching? and is there a good place to start?

this dude is seriously the best. i cannot emphasize this enough.

basically some dude calling himself "k-strass" passing himself off to be an award winning yo-yo supremo has been appearing on morning TV shows across the US, just saying some hilarious shit and generally being very awful with the yo-yo (one time he could not perform any tricks because he "forgot his string") and making the hosts feel really uncomfortable and all sorts of crazy stuff. he is a living legend.

the full article: http://deadspin.com/5535220/fake-yo+yo-trickster-fools-every-tv-station-everywhere

seriously worth reading/watching the whole thing. i really love the background he gives too. it is really A+ stuff.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/may/02/food-fear-mystery-beehives-collapse

Quote
Disturbing evidence that honeybees are in terminal decline has emerged from the United States where, for the fourth year in a row, more than a third of colonies have failed to survive the winter.

Quote
The collapse in the global honeybee population is a major threat to crops. It is estimated that a third of everything we eat depends upon honeybee pollination, which means that bees contribute some £26bn to the global economy.

oh shittttt

who knew we relied on honeybees so much!

i have been chatting with a couple of guys on IRC, and basically we were reminiscing about GW radio and thinking it would be great to start it up again. however, the major problem with GW radio was (amongst other things) time zones, and getting people to tune in was always a pain. so this is where we came up with the idea of a GW podcast.

ideas and stuff have been thrown around, but the idea is a sort of magazine based show, filled with a variety of things, for example:
- chef's hour of shrek
- dada explains: the history of the walljump
- shepperd and gazzwa improvise
- the week in gw with newscaster rowain
- short stories by midgit
- the real dilbert audiobook by drule

you know, not those ideas literally but you get the gist of it, a lot of variety and everyone pulling together. i think it would be a great idea, simply because it's far easier to get people to record something and send it in, and maybe throw the occasional vodcast together! there could be different hosts or whatever that would host this weeks/months podcast, and pick the material to be used or whatnot. those are just a few ideas thrown together in the past hour, but let me know what you think, throw some ideas in or just ignore completely!!

so yeah basically this is a SHARE YOUR MEMORIES thread. i don't want any YEAH GW IS DYING shit in here or any IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER THEN shit either because drule and ase/others are working hard and it sounds like they've got some cool shit coming up. this is just a thread to share your fond memories of the community, any pictures and shit that you have and hell, even IRC logs/quotes.

thanks.. for your memories...

the grandma engine is a game maker engine for use with making platform games in game maker. it was made by the excellent matt thorson (an untitled story, fLaiL). although i do not encourage the use of engines normally, this is a great way for users to get started with making games in game maker, and the source code is fully commented, to allow you to start to form an understanding of how to make custom movement and whatnot in game maker.

this is from the original post matt made (almost a year ago!) on the TiGsource forums.

Info: http://mattmakesgames.com/blog/2009/04/elderly-platforming.html

Hopefully this will help some people out.  It's only v0.910 right now, bit definitely usable and a good foundation.  I'll slowly add stuff to it as I have time.

It's based on the Jumper Three engine, but with all J3-specifics striped out and the remainder heavily commented.  I also included an An Untitled Story-style room system because I've gotten a lot of requests to explain how I did that.

It's free to use for freeware/commercial, I just ask for a mention and link in your readme/credits.

so i am bringing this to your attention in an attempt to encourage some more game maker devs here!

i'll try hard not to turn this into a chris morris/armando iannucci fest. sorry about direct links, i have

the thick of it
i'll start with the big guns. you've probably heard of this, so this is for the uninformed. armando iannucci's part scripted, part improvised political satire focusing around the offices of DoSAC (department of social affairs and citizenship), with huge emphasis on how civil servants deal with the media, and includes the scariest scottish man alive: malcolm tucker, the primeminister's enforcer, who keeps the different offices all running in check whilst constantly battling the media, and just about everyone else really. although there's a lot about british government, what's great about this show is the inventive use of swearing, often involving bizarre metaphors, and the well developed characters and how they interact.

15 storeys high
sean lock, famous british panel show comedian, wrote and starred in this incredibly bleak comedy series about living in a flat. as trivial as that sounds, it works well, as the character sean plays is an angry, misanthropic middle aged recluse that spends a lot of his time watching his neighbours judgmentally. he is forced to take on a flatmate to his disgust, who happens to be a bizarre, slightly dim character with a number of odd traits and beliefs. there's the odd cutaway segment too, focusing on the lives of the other members of the block of flats. the show is shot very uniquely, and suits the show completely.

the armando iannucci shows
possibly my favourite comedy show. i'm not going to say anything about this, because it'll just come out in a jumble of synonyms of 'incredible'. all the episodes are available on youtube. i implore you to check it out.

big train
big train takes the format of a typical sketch show, and features three brilliant actors: simon pegg, kevin eldon and mark heap, and was co-written by graham linehan of father ted/black books/it crowd fame. i've posted this because it's a clear head and shoulders above most sketch shows around today, and has some really great sketches, especially in the clip below.

reggie perrin
a modern revival of a classic sitcom starring martin clunes of men behaving badly fame. he plays reggie perrin, a misanthropic, disillusioned character who is head of the 'disposable razor' department at groomtech, a male grooming product company. his world is filled with flamboyant and completely contrasting personalities. though slightly hit and miss, when it hits, it's hilariously funny.

i was going to include more but it's getting late. special mentions to: the day today, black books, jam, nathan barley, green wing, smack the pony etc.

so i don't know if you know of this (i've done a quick search of the forums and stuff and nothing has come up) but those guys over at that there TIGSource website are making a Super Smash Brothers Brawl clone, with an emphasis on indie games. they're including a load of excellent characters from some classic games (including Barkley from beloved shut up and jam gaiden!!!) and it's really shaping up to be something special. there's a load of ideas for stages and whatnot, and a lot of the characters are pretty much finished! there's characters from aquaria, noitu love 2, trilby: the art of theft, dwarf fortress and a whole lot more.

they have their own forum, which has all the details and a download link of the current build available: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?board=29.0

within most the stickies you can view current artwork.

this is the artwork for barkley: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8256.0

and here's the download link of the current version. it's pretty much in alpha at the minute, but pretty cool nonetheless!

hello. basically there is a lot of music that i absolutely adore and would love to share with you. if you don't like it or something that's fine, i would just like to try to share this with you. give it a shot and see what you think. some of these artists are pretty big, some of them not so. tell me what you think.

perfume genius
perfume genius is a very small artist who has yet to release a full length (but is doing so very soon). he is a guy called mike who is 26 and sells furniture by day. by night, armed with a fuckload of reverb and a piano, he creates the most beautiful, eerie yet poetic music ever. he is an absolutely amazing artist. and i love him so much. it's really sad music, but very nice to listen to. if out of any of the artists i'm recommending i had to pick an ABSOLUTE MUST HEAR it will be perfume genius. that's why he's first.

myspace: http://www.myspace.com/kewlmagik

listen to you won't b here, gay angels and no problem. perfume genius can do no wrong by me at all.

the xx
a bunch of nineteen year olds from somewhere in london, who bonded over a mutual love of 80's synthpop and dark, moody guitar stuff, they decided to get together and make some music, and have made one of the most important albums this year. no, fuck it, this decade. they are getting HUGE in the UK right now, and with good reason. they have influences the like of portishead, radiohead and burial, but create such melodramatic and lovely songs. they are brilliant, and if you like dark yet sweet music, i'm sure you'll love these. they are on spotify, if you want to listen to more.

myspace: www.myspace.com/thexx

surf city
surf city are a new zealand based surf-punk-indie band. they sound like animal collective, if they tried to make a surf rock record. with heavy influences from surf rock, they play energetic pop songs with lots of harmonising and song pretty great lyrics. very very catchy. they only have an ep out at the moment, but its one of the best releases of the year, and their full length is highly anticipated.

girls
girls are a band from san fransisco who make lovely garage pop songs and make really sweet songs about love and girls. you would never have guessed from the name of their band. they're not as bad as i make them sound, they're very jangly and quite diverse, but it is pretty much what pitchfork falls over themselves for. i dunno, i really like them. they make happy dancable songs, and some pretty sad songs. their new album, simply called "album" (intentionally to try and make them ungooglable apparently) will be released soon for which i am very excited.

myspace: http://www.myspace.com/girlssanfran

recommended tracks: lust for life, hellhole ratrace, lauren marie

gowns
this one is a doozy, as i simply cannot describe how good gowns are. or even show, really. they are an experimental band, and they play loud sometimes and they play soft sometimes. all in all they are quite breathtaking. their album red state is already in my top 10 albums of all time. which takes some doing. they get described as "noise folk", think of that what you will. basically all i can suggest is check out their myspace and get hold of red state, you will not be disappointed.

myspace: http://www.myspace.com/gowns

so there you go, this is some music, have a listen and tell me what you think.

so yeah. i'm leaving gaming world.

right now, there is a lot going on in my life, and i imagine there will be for some time, a lot of stuff that has really gotten to me over the past couple of months. and right now it's at the peak. although i barely make posts anymore, i thought i should say goodbye properly, as i've made some really good friends here over the four years and thoroughly enjoyed my time here, taking part in the events and goings on and feeling a part of the community. i'll still pop in on irc from time to time to say hello and see how people are and stuff, but for now this is it really. you guys are the best, and i've never held more respect for anyone than you guys.

it's been a while since i've looked at any goodbye topics, and i can't remember everyone i want to say goodbye properly to, and there's no doubt that i'll stay in touch with the brits. let me know when the next britmeat is on.

i'm aware this is probably the shittest goodbye topic, but i felt i had to say my piece.

definitely one of the best shows ever made. i've recently began watching through them, but i can't remember some of the best episodes. so this is the "discuss favourite mystery science theatre 3000 episodes" topic!

my favourite episode is "overdrawn at the memory bank", as everything about it is amazing. the film itself is grand as it makes no sense at all, and the way the guys commentate it trying to make sense of it is hilarious.

and everything they say about the fat man had me in stitches.

so yeah, not sure if this topic has been made before or whatever (i'm sure it has) but tell me the best mst2k episodes!

yeasayer are a 4-piece from the USA. i haven't seen anyone post about them here, but i have a feeling they will be well liked. there's no easy way to describe their music, there's so many influences. they call themselves "middle Eastern-psych-pop-snap-gospel", but it's more a quirky shoegaze indie pop rock gospel sort of feel. they have beautiful vocals (think pure reason revolution) and their music is sort of like anathallo mixed in with animal collective, but... not. i don't know, go listen yourself and make up your own mind. so far they have one album out, called "all hour cymbals".

this man is actually crazy.

http://www.celebitchy.com/8638/the_tom_cruise_scientology_video/

i actually couldn't make sense out of this. but i love how he thinks he has the answer for everything, but in fact is talking absolute nonsense.

Quote from: from the site
Hurry up and watch it before it’s removed. It’s hard to tell what the hell Cruise is talking about, apart from the fact that in his addled mind he thinks he has the answers to everything. At one point he talks about SPs, which is Scientology-speak for suppressive people, or people who try to detract from their craziness, and how they don’t confront him.

“It’s our responsibility to educate, to create the new reality…”

A commentor on RadarOnline, which had a YouTube version which was removed, is a former Scientologist and offers some definitions for all the cult-speak.

And US Weekly has a transcript.

what are your thoughts?

one day i was strolling around the pound shop (i live in redcar, it gets its entire funding from pound shops and hairdressers (which i don't get because everyone is bald here)), and i found a rather funny sounding movie: spontaneous combustion. it had a quote from the bible on the front of it, how could i put it down? reading the back of it, it sounded pretty interesting.

so i paid my £1 and took it home and watched it.

okay, SO. the story is about a couple who are subject to nuclear testing, and they test some new drug that stops them being radiated or something. so far so good. anyway, the couple have a child. the group behind the test don't like it, she shouldn't have been able to get pregnant. anyway, they have the child. with me so far?

the child has a birthmark on its hand: a perfect circle. in the hospital, the couple spontaneously combust. that's right. they burn alive. the special effects are second to none, i mean, they just set two dummies on fire and shook them, added over the top screaming and it was done.

the story then goes to the child as an adult, who is played by some incredibly over the top actor. anyway, he gets angry and fire shoots out of his arm. or something. then he gets taken for an injection of... nuclear glow? i don't know. but he makes everyone in his way spontaneously combust. he even makes people spontaneously combust OVER THE PHONE.

but yeah, some shit happens then at the end he dissolves into a blue... glow. or something.

you must watch this film, it is amazing. i was actually rolling with tears. seriously.

holy fuck. i'm not even going to put spoilers, you NEED to see this. it is just unbelievable.

"The extraordinary eight-limbed baby was born in a poverty-stricken region of Bihar, India - on the day devoted to the celebration of the four-armed Hindu deity Vishnu."

discuss.
