Stumbled back into here last night for really no reason other than alcohol, and I figured I should make amends.

Wondering what's up but I see that it's dead as ever. Which is perfect. Sometimes, you just need to have a space where no one is so you can be a goddamn human being again. Or a transgendered hippy space saucer. Whatever it is you kids are into nowadays. Mostly, I'm here because I need to get back into writing again, and writing often.

I'm finally out of college with my degree in computer engineering and 35k in the toilet, which I guess isn't much. Doing freelance Android app development, frontend and backend, and leading a small guild of coders who meet in a Target starbucks twice a week. We refer jobs to each other and help each other out where we can. It's pretty fun, but the clients are drying up or not paying on time. I've got another 4 months until I need to start paying back student loans, which means I'll need a job-job. My resume's in one hand, and Cracking the Coding Interview by Gayle MacDowell is in the other. But I'm really hesitant to push that submit button whenever I'm applying.

See, because right now, I have this idea.

My big passion project right now is a makerspace cafe. I've got a business proposal written up, and an investor, and now we're negotiating for space somewhere near my hometown with someone with experience running cafes. Everything is going crazy great, and I'm excited as hell.

The basic concept of it is that it's going to be a coffee shop with a work/study commons which offers tools in an adjacent warehouse if you've got a membership. Typically those memberships go for 150 bucks a month, which is pretty expensive. But by attaching a coffee shop to it, I think I can reduce the membership price down to $30. Think "tools" like 3D printers, lathes, saws, CNC mills, that kind of thing. We'd teach classes and have workshops, host robotics competitions, and more.

Anyway, my life is mostly revolving around this right now. But some other projects I'm working on are:

1.) an MMO for Android Phones where people cast spells at each other via minigames and gestures at their screens kind of like a spellbook.
2.) a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book engine for Android (I'll toss it up on github when it's ready)
3.) a robot arm that attaches to my back and holds my phone in front of my face. Sounds dumb, yeah I know. But you can use it as a camera gimbal, which is schweet, and it's useful if you need both hands and your phone is clunky like mine. Eventually I want to write a companion app for it, a cute little pet AI which responds to commands and recommends articles and interesting things for me to read occasionally. When I get there I promise to put the build of materials up.

Still though. None of this is putting food on the table -yet.-

Anyway, what are you guys working on?

Surprised I haven't seen a thread on this yet, but mkuy.

This is Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Minus. It's a complete revamp of the original, with faster gameplay and melee-like qualities. It's fast. It's arcadey. It's very broken. Snake's forward smash is prolongated and the hit radius goes across the goddamn screen. Ike's lag has been decreased. Captain Falcon doesn't suck balls. In fact, the entire tier list disappears because the other characters now have the capacity to do several combos (nonexistent in brawl), and as a result the game looks more fun in a lolwut? kind of way.

Best of all, it's all homebrew, baby, and it's free. Check out some videos at...

Have any of you decided to change your majors? If so, how? What criteria do you use to judge whether a major is good for you or not?

Lately I've been thinking that Electrical Engineering isn't right for me. I'm not innately good at memorizing this stuff, the subject matter seems dry, and I can't really see myself being happy with it 10 years down the line. It's in my capacity to do the work of course, and the material isn't hard, but it's become stressful. I don't feel like putting the effort in because the work isn't lively; I have more fun writing essays than slugging through a technical book. Still, I don't know whether I might like the material sometime later, after I've gotten a sufficient knowledge base in it. I may just have this uneasy feeling about it just because I don't have a good foundation in it yet. Anyway, I feel as if I have a responsibility to the sacrifices my family's made to get me to school to pick a job with good job security.

On the other hand, I've become interested in sociology. I think it would be really cool to compile pages of study on the feasibility of stuff like the Arizona law, or researching how to attack huge social problems like gender and racial stratification, lessening the harms of poverty, etc. This kind of work seems to be more meaningful and lively, and at the same time less stressful. I know the working conditions are worse (it's more office-y and bureaucratic, which I detest) and you make less money. But it seems to me that I would be GOOD at this. On top of that, I could double major with econ and capitalize on my math background. It would really would kick some ass to be in research...only, from what I've read it's preferable that you have a doctoral degree. At any rate, I can't tell if this is a case of the grass being greener on the other side, or if I'm genuinely interested in this.

What are your thoughts? Have you guys changed majors? What made you do it? How did you decide?

I'm just curious, really. I've been here for awhile and I've never even come CLOSE to finishing a project, and I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat. I was thinking maybe us lamers can get together to make a project in the coming competition.

For those of you who don't know what a timeshare is, it's basically a collection of vacation hotels that the people who own the timeshare collectively own with everyone else in the program. With a timeshare, you are able to rent out any vacation spot around the world (that the provider owns) for free or, when the credits allotted to your timeshare runs out, for a reduced price of $50 a night. You pay for the timeshare in monthly increments, and once you own the timeshare, it's basically like an asset you control. You can resell it, or just continue using it.

My dad is preparing to declare bankruptcy, which means that he has to get rid his timeshare. He's already put around $18k into it, which is halfway to ownership. The payments are around $300 a month, so the other half will take 5 years to pay off. Should I take the chance and take the timeshare?

Quite a few of you guys are Europeans, which means you travel to other countries more extensively than I do. I don't really know whether getting this is a good deal, compared to being able to use the money now, investing it into stocks, and saving it up for the occasional trip or two. I've got a couple things to think about, i.e. paying for a car + insurance, working on schoolwork, and buying food for my brothers and I. Making payments on the timeshare may adversely affect these things, especially if I work nights at the hospital – the pay is $17 an hour and the job is per diem, which kinda fits with the college schedule, but working nights isn't really conducive to doing well in school.

Working on schoolwork is a biggie here because I think I'ma major in Electrical Engineering (I'm undecided though because I'm uncomfortable with the major) and then head into law school. The thing is, I really, really want to get into Harvard, and if I'm making these payments (ie not studying), my grades could be affected (Electrical Engineering's tough) and I probably won't be able to get in. Basically, this decision could affect my future at large.

I always wanted to travel; I've never been out of the country and it's great to get a new perspective from time to time. I'd really want to stay someplace weeks at a time, just to soak in the people there (I hate tourism and just 'seeing stuff'). And working $17 dollars an hour will definitely allow me to pay for this. The question is, is it feasible? Is it worth it?

Right, with the housing market gone to hell and the state of the economy as it is, my friend and I were joking about where the fuck I'll live for college.

My mom lives in state-subsidized housing. She gets 3 bedrooms for around $750 bucks, which is unheard of in southern california. Problem is, because she's picking up a second job and making more money, she may not be eligible for tenancy. 3-bedroom apartments around here cost as much as 2k a month, meaning she'll downsize to a 2 (or worse) a 1 bedroom apt (still around 1 fricking grand in this hell hole). We've explored all the solutions...looked for suitable roommates, none of which were safe/ not crackatics/ not alcoholics, ...looked for more subsidized housing (and being put on a 5 year waitlist), ...even thought about moving away (which is impossible. Parents are divorced and by court order we have to go between houses certain days, meaning we're stuck where ever our dad is). Yeah, we've even thought about *not* making any more money. Except for the fact that I'll need to work for college and they'd include me in the total revenue. My mom and 2 brothers might be screwed. But I'll be 18! Freedom from the machine, baby!

Solution?

Fuck, yeah!

I'd buy a van offa ebay, a fixer-upper, reupholster the sucker and pimp it out. Cruise around lookin' for local wifi hotspots. Stop by the library to do my studying and then crash at the local beaches till morning before the lifeguards kick me out! How badass is that? I'd do my part to fuck up the SYSTEM by leeching huge-ass checks from the gub'mint (I'd use up my 2 years of TANF) and get a FREE JR. COLLEGE EDUCATION thanks to the BOG waiver. To make money, I could put advertisements on my van (there are trucks that do this already), or maybe I could become the latest web-craze and be sponsored by our DYING AMERICAN auto companies. That's right, I could make money JUST BY DRIVING THE FUCK AROUND. This'll subsidize my gas, and generate me some electricity (solar panels!) so I can save up and buy me a 42'' plasma screen TV and play wii all day. Or, better yet, I could take my story to Pimp My Ride and have 50'' subfuckingwoofers put in every knick and cranny of my car and I'll end up having to sleep on my roof but hot-damn, I'd have a fully loaded ENTERTAINMENT VEHICLE and I'd be damn proud of it. Plus, because I was a FUCKING RETARD and decided to major in ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING *shoots self* I could be my own project, outfitting my van with a biquad dish antenna and a whole host of awesome accessories. For food and hygiene, I could buy a solar shower or shower at the local beaches. Then I could buy 2 fifty pound rice bags and munch on rice all day (I do that anyway), crash parties and clean out the soup kitchens. Possibilities are endless. Eventually, I would amass an army of street-roving VANMEN..MEN..men and coerce others to join our lifestyle. Goddammit, this'll be the new wave of the future! WHO IS WITH ME?!

Or I could just...not go to community college...maybe fork over the money for UCSD and get a triple room with BULLSHIT FUCK THAT, THAT'S LAME

Questions!

Resolved: That, by 2040, the federal government should mandate that all new passenger vehicles and light trucks be powered by alternative fuels.

Resolution Analysis

This debate is an uphill battle for the negative, and knowing my luck, I'll get the negative each and every round. This res = suck.

Aff arguments

The affirmative basically aims to say that by 2040, the federal gov't ought to make sure that all new passenger cars are run by alternatives. For you government geeks out there, yes, the gov in America is able to do that thanks to the Commerce Clause, which gives Congress the power to make law over just about everything that moves.

I'ma think of more arguments later because it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm dipshit tired. Then I'll post my neg args. A big thing for the neg is the oil in the Colorado Rockies, which alone is projected to be able to run the US's transportation needs for the next 150 years or something according to my partner (translation: I'll have to look into it). It'd be pretty awesome for us if we become the next Saudi Arabia. Big exporter of oil. I've also heard that Canada has oil that you can simply mill from the sand. If you guys export that to us, then we don't need to rely on Saudi Arabia...so that aff argument is moot. I'll return to this later.

Anyway, what's your guys' take on these arguments, or on alternative fuels in general?

Resolved: That on-balance social networking websites have a positive impact on the United States

:fogetbackflip:

Okay, so I guess I'm not debating health care. Frickin' school where the next tourny was supposed to be called me up and said that they were CHANGING THE RESOLUTION. Yeah, so after I spent at LEAST 15 hours researching Canadian, US, and French health care, they arbitrarily decide to shove their SNOBBY, ELITIST FOOT UP MY ASS and change the topic to "BLULZ internet?" My partner and I are so pissed.

Rant aside, this resolution's a fricking cakewalk compared to health care. Obviously, social networking sites like Myspace, Facebook, and lo! GW, allow we the people to fully exercise our right to free speech, organize politically, etc etc. At the same time however, these networks have allowed child molesters to cyberstalk kids, enabled terrorists to communicate, and generally promote an unhealthy sedentary life style.

So what do you think? Do you think that GW contributes to the downfall of mankind? Is your fatass post count really worth the loss of life and/or sex? Have you seen your "TOTAL TIME LOGGED IN" lately? Do you believe that the current security measures against predators today are fine, or do they need work?

Allez posting!

Okay, classic end-of-high-school thing to do. Europe trip.

My girlfriend and I are saving money to go to Europe next summer (june-ish), and being the dumbass, uncultured Americans we are, we need some ideas. Where should we go? What should we do? That sort of thing.

I kind of hate going around and sight-seeing because those trips are expensive and pretty boring. Yeah, I'm sure the Eiffel tower is great, but I don't want to go "OH YEAH, JUST SAW EIFFEL TOWER, CROSS FRANCE OFF THE LIST." Focusing on shit like that really takes away from the overall experience. So we're really just looking to travel around and see what's life like on the other side of that great Atlantic puddle. Seeing as how traveling around is pretty much a regular thing to do for you WEIRD FOREIGN PEOPLE, keep in mind that this is pretty new to us. I've NEVER been outside of my country. So general basics would be awesome.

For now, how did your trips go? What do you recommend bringing? Have any cool stories to tell?

Resolved: That the United States government should implement universal health care modeled after the French system.

If you don't know already, I'm in speech and debate, and this is the Nov. resolution for public forum. Generally, after taking a look at a topic like this, I shoot myself. A.) Because I am a (MODERATE) conservative. B.) Because this debate will probably be one-sided towards the aff, and C.) Because I know JACK SHIT about this topic. This topic requires me to study not only the U.S.'s current health care situation, but France's, and a whole sleu of OTHER COUNTRIES because for the neg I might want to argue something better, like maybe the CANADIAN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. Studying for this would take forever, and this debate is in about THREE WEEKS.

And then I realized that GW is host to a whole drove of flea-bitten, smelly LIBERALS who could help me out here. Not only that, but alot of them are strategically placed in different countries so they could give background on how their country's health care system work. And on top of this, our members are prone to being hospitalized (I think Atari has lung problems, Pulits was shot awhile back, and Steel raped cancer). Someone here's gotta have an opinion about their form of health care.

Seeing that this is probably my best place to start, this idea has culminated into the thread that you are reading right now. This thread will address the following things:
1.) How does your form of health care work?
2.) Do you like your form of health care?
3.) What are the government's civic duties involving health care?
4.) Does your form of health care adequately meet the needs of the people in general?

I urge you to respect the posts of others and keep the flamage to a minimum because you guys will seriously save my life and the progress of AMERICA because everyone knows that these high school debates influence executive and legislative decisions. That said, feel free to bite off each others' ears.

ALLEZ POSTING!

Fixing a neighbor's computer, brimming with viruses and a broken registry. When it tries to boot windows xp, it doesn't even display the splash screen. It says that C:\windows\system32\system is missing or corrupt.

So I follow this:
http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/advanced/registry-corruption.html

Basically, it tells me to do a chkdsk with the windows xp setup disk; I do that, and nothing happens. Then it says that I have to change directories to C:\windows\system32\, back up the corrupt files "system" "sam" and "security," and then copy new ones from a directory at C:\Windows\repair (this directory is supposedly created when windows is installed; it has the uncorrupted "system" "sam" and "security" files. The thing is that this directory (C:\Windows\repair) has NOTHING in it; it doesn't have the files I need to replace the corrupted backups. I look all over the intarwebz for other options but they all say to do the same thing, (even the microsoft tutorial here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545).

What should I do?

I have an inkling to tell my neighbor to buy a new windows xp CD. She doesn't want to. So this is what I'ma do...tell me if I'm doing anything stupid here.

I'm going to use GParted to cut the windows partition in half (she has unused parts of it), then I'm going to backup her pictures etc to that partition. Then I plan to reinstall XP using one of my own CDs, and then call in if there are any problems concerning the genuity of it. Microsoft'll be a bitch about using the same CD twice I'll bet, so I was wondering if you guys have had successful calls with this.

Anyways, once I reinstall windows, I'll take stuff from that backed-up partition (pictures, etc) and then put them back into the windows install.

Is this a good idea, and what software would you recommend to help me to this end? (GParted looks like it's not going to work...it's not shrinking the windows part) I'm doing this partition thing because I don't have external memory to backup those files.

EDIT: Would it be possible for me to copy the setup, sam, and other files from another computer, and paste them into this one? Will these setup files work with the programs of the one I'm trying to fix?

Every so often, one of these topics pops up. Granted, it's probably a yearly trend, but whatever I'm going to post this anyways.

Basically, I woke up this morning and realized I have NO FRICKING CLUE what I should look for in a college. I'm going to be a high school senior next year, and we start turning in applications around November -- December. Because this is an older forum and most of you guys have already been through this, what factors should I take into account when looking at colleges?

Obviously, the finances are always a factor. But because I'm higher lower class/ low upper class I could probably get some government grants/ scholarships (you could see those goddamn essays in lit). That, and I'm obviously going to need to get myself a student loan. So along this line, what sort of complications arise from student loans in general? Is there anything that I should be aware of? Would you recommend any bank programs or anything of the sort along these lines?

I'll definitely ask more questions along the scope of this thread, but here's another one. California offers a program that allows you to go to a community college, get the general education finished, and transfer to a university after 2 years (I think for your majors etc.). However, some of my friends are trying to go straight to a 4 year college. What the hell is up with that? Why spend the extra money -- does it have any bearing on your vocation? I'm thinking about becoming a lawyer -- and if that's too much for me, perhaps a computer engineer. Unfortunately, these are two totally different roads for me to take, and two different college routes. What should I do about it?

Basically this topic is a discussion about your college application experience, general things to do in college, colleges you recommend, anything along these lines. I need help!

I wanted to post this in Political Forum but for some ungodly reason it's disappeared, and I almost made the mistake of posting it in Post 9/11.

In foreword, I know nothing of politics, of how Congress works, how Congress is elected, and how it altogether decides the budget. For all I know, maybe the POTUS gets to decide what to do with the budget (because there is always the OMG BUSH PROPOSES THIS THIS AND THIS LET'S SHOOT THIS SHIT DOWN type thing). I dunno. I'ma go ahead and fail AP Gov, thank you.

Basically, throughout various resolutions in speech and debate, it was discussed and frequently alluded to that the US fiscal budget generally sucks and the people who bring this about are to blame. Basically, it is my understanding that both parties pursue the same things in terms of how much money they allot to their differing programs, whether or not they operate at a deficit, and so on. Because their policies are so similar, our economy at large is slowly drifting into the dreaded Downward Spiral of stupid borrowing because of fiscal irresponsibility. There's Keynesian economics, the Fed, a J-Curve thrown into the mix, trickle-down theory, and all that other bullshit that I'm just confused to hell about. Like, does a continued deficit propounding upon our national debt really take a toll upon our economy? Can we hold this debt for much longer (the debt ceiling is supposed to be raised to 10 trillion soon, I believe)? I'll have many more questions, definitely.

I actually need to know this for a speech that I plan to give next monday, and I don't want to go off on a ranting spree on stuff that I'm just not too sure about. Basically, this is that American Identity speech that I alluded to in a few other threads. The word I am writing for is "Degradation," and I want to prove that the economy, due to a stagnant socioeconomic policy, is slowly screwing itself over. I just want to make sure beforehand that I'm actually right to argue this and this isn't just some bullshit pre-pubescent OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING line of reasoning. So basically, I ask you all to discuss (and with good CITATION) the status of the budget as it is, and the potential problems thereof.

If you could describe the United States with ONE WORD, what would that word be?

I have this stupid American Identity speech that I have to give Friday, so I chose the word "Stagnant." I'll probably talk about the rotting away of our political, social, and moral values (from Vietnam on), our economy as yet (As far as I understand it, both political parties have come to embrace the same fiscal budgeting system, maybe with the exception of Republicans now because they are now synonymous with "war" (which is very stupid)), and maybe a few other things (IE I've run out of ideas but I'm not asking for them -- of course not -- any ideas that I will have gotten will be due to your most generous altruism).

Anyways, my class is being especially negative on the subject ("Bigoted," "Stupid," "Imperialistic,") so I'm interested particularly in what people from other countries have to say, too. This'll be fun. Maybe.
