For a while now I have been meaning to buy a PS3. When it first came out, I heard discouraging rumors about backwards compatibility issues, which immediately steered me away from buying one. Now it has been quite a while since then, but I haven't really kept up with the progress Sony has (or maybe hasn't) made on this issue. A glance at the Wikipedia article told me that the 40GB models don't have backwards compatibility at all, so I clearly do not want one of those. When I looked at the columns for the 60GB and 80GB models, though, I was confused. I am aware of the difference in concept of hardware and software emulation, but I'd like to know if anyone can give me a rundown of what this means in simple terms of quality of gameplay. It appears from the other references that the hardware process provides for better play, but then another part of the article said that Sony has fixed the issues with software emulation in successive fixes. Can someone elaborate a bit on this? Also, since there is emulation of the PS2, I assume this means I can still play my PSX games as well, right? Since the 60GB appears to be no longer in production, if it turns out to be the better choice, I'll just have to buy one off ebay.

A second issue: a big reason I chose the PS3 is for its Blu-ray function, however I am having a serious issue with the fact that there seems to be no good RPGs coming out for the PS3, whereas I continuously see what could be appealing RPGs for the 360. I am aware that Eternal Sonata is coming sometime this year for the PS3, but as it is already out for the XBOX, I would not be missing much there. As Dynasty Warriors 6 is for the XBOX as well, I really am not seeing anything game-wise drawing me to the PS3, so if I may ask, can someone (or multiple people) give me a simple rundown of the comparative advantages of the XBOX or the PS3 over the other in terms of the console itself and not just the games available. Also, recommendations of good RPGs for the PS3 either slated for release or already available would be very helpful.

All of this will be very beneficial to either my buying of a PS3 or ultimately selecting something else. Please don't recommend the Wii as it is a great system, but is not appealing to me.

watch for my new rm2k game legend of dragons 3

Anyway, my period of time away from online activity brought me few deeply religious/intellectual revelations. Perhaps the only thing I did learn is that I don't get anything more done without GW/IM/IRC than I do with it, so it looks like I am back. About the only notable thing I did while I was gone was switch to Linux, which is a big thing for me since I am trying to figure out stuff on it while bugging everyone on GW I know who uses it with questions.

So what happened while I was gone?

Some of you may have already noticed that I have not been very active the past few days. That isn't likely to change for a while. I have a bunch of stuff to take care of in school and I am a bit burned out on the online world as it is, so I figure I need to take a break. I will be on IRC sporadically at best, so if you really want to talk to me, MSN is probably your best bet. I should come wandering back in a few weeks or sooner, so never fear.

Time to revamp the rules topic because I am bored!

This forum is for posting introductory topics and for informing members of your leaving or absences. The key thing to mention here is that this is a lax forum, For those of you unfamiliar with the history of GW, we used to ban people daily in this forum for not complying with simple rules. We won't ban you here any more. This may or may not be a good thing. Also bear in mind that posting in this forum does not increase your post count.

There are, however, still simple rules that you can be warned for breaking. These are in addition to the normal general forum rules.
  • Do not flame new members. You may suggest ways they can improve their behavior to fit in here, but do not insult them. I would like this to stay a friendly forum (as friendly as GW gets) to encourage people to stay here.
  • Only post a welcome topic if you are, indeed, a new member. If you have more than...say...50 posts or you have been here for like 6 months, don't post a welcome topic because odds are, we already know you. Exceptions are if you, for instance, joined a year ago and made 2 posts and now plan to be more active.
  • Only post a topic about leaving if you are leaving for more than two weeks or so.
  • Don't bump topics over around a week old.
Just because this forum is lax, doesn't mean your topics should be "hi guys im new" and that's it. The point of a topic is to introduce yourself. If you don't tell us anything about yourself, you will be asked politely by me to do so. If you don't, you'll probably be met with negative responses from other members. The other big issue is that while this is a gaming community, there are many people here, myself included, that care nothing about making games or playing them, so you probably don't want to include only game information in your topic.

Here are a few questions you might answer if you don't know what to talk about. I don't know what your mommy or the news media told you, but online stalkers aren't going to kidnap you if you give us some information about yourself.
  • What kind of music do you like?
  • Where do you live?
  • How old are you?
  • What do you think about politics?
  • What kind of games do you like?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • Do you like anime?
  • Why did you join Gaming World?

Answering even one or two of those questions is better than nothing and you will likely get a good response from people whose answers are similar.

I see plenty of IRC discussion going on about bands and genres, usually this is centered around the zoo, but frequently it is also just for kicks, so I decided to register #music and hopefully turn it into a place where everyone on GW can come to talk about music of all kinds.

Current OPs:
~Jeff
&DragonSlayer
&HybridZero
@Moriason
@DarkPriest
@ATARI
%Wash Cycle
%Teloch
%dom

Anyway, if you are looking for a place to talk about music of broaden your musical horizons or even just request music on the zoo or IRC transfer, I hope you'll come to #music. We typically have close to 30 people on during active times, and there is a massive variety of tastes, though the dominant ones are post-rock/indie and prog/power metal.

Many of the members in the room have last.fm, so it might be advantageous to sign up for an account there. Gaming World has a group there as well, but it requires a member approval to enter, so if you want to get in, leave me a message in my shoutbox. Recently we also had some fun with a personality group.
